champi - and all good evening, i'm ann notarangelo. the 49ers host the nfc championship game tomorrow. and all eyes will be on candle stick. so it makes sense for the stadium to put its best foot forward. right now that foot would land in a flooded mess. don knapp is at candlestick where crews are trying to drain a lake that showed up overnight. >> the parking lot is ready for the fans and tailgaters to arrive now. but when crews arrived earlier today, they did find a lake and they had to drain it. call it lake candlestick. the heavily flooded parking lots on the bay side of the stadium. it looks more like a place for boating than tailgate picnicking. earlier in the day, city crews were running the pump under the man they call the incident commander. they take the flooding here that seriously. >> there is more than anticipating this type of storm with the tides coming this

happens just about every year and when there is a game, everybody notices it. >> especially with a big game like the nfc championship game between the 49ers an new york giants. all week long, the crews have been watching the weather forecasts. >> the earlier in the week, we cleared the catch basins so the waste water could enter the sewer and there wasn't debris and we set up and planned to come here today and pump if necessary. as you can see, from behind me, we are in full pumping mode. pumps ran until late afternoon. moving out the flood water. and drying out the lots. >> we're hoping for a little break from mother nature. and we're actually expecting heavy rains only to maybe start tomorrow toward the end of the game. and so we should have this parking lot clear, for the morning, when the cars come in and when the game is going on. >> whatever the weather has in store, the city says it is ready. crews are standing by. >> we expect this parking lot to be clear. and three or four hours. and we will stay here all night. >> now, if rain does dump on the stadium tomorrow, the fans will no doubt tough it out. they will not leave that game

early. but when they make their way back to the parking lot, they will know the city has worked for them because the parking lot will be dry. at least we hope so. >> we have our fingers crossed. thank you very much, don. a bay area husband and wife just found out that they will be going to the game. they won the san francisco rec and park department's biggest fan competition. >> congratulations. >> thank you. >> and ben and jolie crauson and about a thousand other people sent tweets to the department during a 24-hour contest. they got married. in shakespeare garden in san francisco a year and a half ago and their wedding photo with bubbles is the winning entry. his thought during their kiss, the gold rush girls and her thought, the 49ers linebacker patrick lewis. they win two lower reserve tickets to tomorrow's game and sit on the 20-yard line near the 49ers bench. let's not forget the afc championship game tomorrow between the ravens and the patriots.

it starts at noon. right here on cbs 5. occupy san francisco takeover tactic ended with nearly two dozen arrests. demonstrators marched trashing a bentley dealership before taking over what used to be the cathedral hotel. the fy -- the fire alarm was pulled at one point. 23 people were arrested. and thousands took over the streets of san francisco and oakland today. to stand up for life. anti-abortion protesters held rallies all over the west coast today. and an estimated 50,000 abortion opponents marched down san francisco's market street. to justin herman plaza. this event started in 2005. and has grown steadily ever since. the main message from the marchers, abortion, and women.

and tomorrow is the 39th anniversary of roe v. wade, the ruling that gave women the right to have an abortion. pro-choice advocates held their own smaller rally. this rally was also in san francisco. we talked to women who remember when abortion was illegal. they say the right to have one must be kept. >> they claim to be pro life. which says that maybe we are not. that is not true. i have children. i am very pro life. i am just a woman's right to choose, whatever that choice may be. >> unlike in past years, the two rallies did not confront each other. three states, three winners. newt gingrich is the latest republican candidate to win a pre-election contest. what this means for the race going forward. and it became a rallying cry for activists. and a nightmare for uc davis. the final decision on charges

carolina today, winning that state's republican presidential primar newt gingrich took south carolina today. winning that state's republican presidential primary. and if you're keeping track, that is three contests and in three states with three different winners. danielle knotsham is in south carolina where -- nottingham is in south carolina where the gingrich camp is celebrating tonight. >> reporter: cbs news predicts newt gingrich is the winner of the south carolina primary. the former house speaker mounted a double digit comeback in recent days to beat mitt romney. he won with last-minute voters and more than half polled said they made up their minds over the past few days and of authorize who did, 45% voted for gingrich and 24% finally decided on mitt romney. >> the polls are good, the votes are better. >> reporter: gingrich scored for his performances at recent debates. more than six in 10 voters say the debates were an important

factor in the decision. and among them, twice more voted for gingrich than romney. >> i like the debates and i like the attitude of go after them. >> reporter: a gingrich victory in south carolina means none of the candidates has won more than one state. iowa was awarded to rick santorum this week. and new hampshire went to mitt romney. romney is looking to regain the momentum he had leading up to south carolina. delegate rich florida holds the primary in 10 days. rick santorum says despite a likely third or fourth place finish, he will compete in florida and beyond. >> this is a process that needs to go on. we need, you know, choices for the votes when the states are coming in ahead and we will give them that choice. >> ron paul says he too is also going to florida where there is a debate monday night. danielle nottingham, cbs news, columbia, south carolina. cbs 5 political analyst joe tooman is here to help make sense of what is happening in the republican primary. thanks joe for being here.

newt gingrich is up and down and back up and back down and now back up. what does it say about the campaign? >> what it says is he will be able to raise money going into florida and the other states and he will probably be outside of rick santorum, the person who has the best chance of derailing mitt romney's march toward the nomination. >> how much of a blow is this to mitt romney? it was assumed we be the leader according to the polls. >> i think he had hoped something different but the game changer happened in the last 48 hours. and it wasn't about newt gingrich's wife and it wasn't about santorum being given the iowa caucus vote in the end and it was about rick perry's departure. and when rick perry departed this campaign in south carolina and evangelical christians had a smaller pool of candidates to choose from if they didn't like mitt romney and it narrowed down to rick santorum and newt gingrich. and i think given gingrich's performances in the debates the

other night, trying to put the other issue, for for give the expression to bed, and the evangelicals rationalized their choice for him because they didn't want to vote for mitt romney. gingrich is a player now. >> they all move down to florida now. does that change the game again? is florida obviously -- florida obviously stands alone. a different dynamic than south carolina, and new hampshire and iowa. >> florida is an important state to win. it doesn't have the delegate strength before because it has moved up early but an important state for the candidates. and probably more for mitt romney because of the evangelical base and the problem that he had with the religious faith won't be as powerful of an argument against him in florida as it was in other places. and it is also a place where you got to have a lot of money and big organization. romney starts with a head start there. and no question with the news narrative and the people that are talking about this, it is obvious that mitt romney is not

invincible. and the more the people sense that that is true, the more they will give money to other candidates and it will be a long season. >> joe tooman, as always. thanks for your insight. appreciate it. politicians giving anyone an opportunity to walk in their shoes, and who thought they could do it better? voters balance the budget. and elizabeth wenger is up next with the forecast. we know it will rain tomorrow but what does the week ahead look like?

those uc davis protestors will not be charged. sprayed at close range with pepper spray. today we know those uc davis protesters will not be charged. the district attorney says there was not enough evidence to charge the demonstrators. the videos of demonstrators being hit with the pepper spray became a rallying cry for the uc davis occupy movement as well as fodder for internet parody. a happy 4th. and san jose is doing it again. the city is asking its citizens how it should spend the cash it has. and san jose is $40 million short for the next fiscal year. anne makovec shows us the games with a serious impact. >> the biggest challenge facing our government is a lack of civic engagement. and part of the lack of civic engagement is a lack of true discourse among people with different points of view.

>> this fake money represents the millions of real dwhrars san jose has to play -- dollars san jose has to play with but as in real life there isn't enough to go around and these people representing neighborhood groups are in the politician's shoes, deciding what should stay and what can go. >> and only through choices do people really understand the decisions that elected officials have to make. you can't be everything to everyone. >> the budget challenges here in san jose and in most cities across california are being made worse by a court decision late last year that allows the state to take away local re- development funds. this year, san jose is dealing with the possible $40 million short fall. and has to balance the budget by june. everybody comes from a slightly different perspective but public safety and roads and community services like libraries and parks are up will. >> reporter: had is the second year san jose is working with innovation games which writes an extensive report probono. and last year it helped the city to decide on cuts to the

fire department and put more money into paving roads. >> when we get down with the entire process, i want to make sure that the budget that we adopt reflecting the values and priorities of our community. >> it comes down to the crunches, when it is voting time, and then it is really a hard decision. but i applaud them for being here today. because that hasn't always been the case. >> reporter: am san jose, anne makovec, cbs 5. we've waited for the rain. we need the rain but now that it is here, we wish it could be pushed to another day. here is elizabeth wenger with the details. >> a big football game coming up tomorrow. it could be on and off rain throughout the entire length of the game. for right now, though, it is dry outside. and a live look over the skyline of san francisco. see how we're getting a dry break and relatively clear skies and temperatures not bad. the high def doppler kind of kicking back overnight. it looks like for the next few hours, we should be remaining dry, and high def doppler is gearing up. it is getting ready for tomorrow. because it is going to be in overdrive by tomorrow afternoon. and the temperatures outside right now, mostly in the upper 40s to low 50s.

across the bay area. and for tomorrow, again showers. and we could also see some relatively strong wind gusts as well. and rain and clouds kind of the name of the game for tomorrow. especially by mid afternoon. temperatures should be in the low to upper 50s. and coast bay and inland. and right now, the high pressure still remains in effect. we are closely watching a low though. it is just sitting waiting off to the west of us. and so your future cast kind of timing this out for you. we look like we could see scattered showers mostly in the north bay even before sun rise and check out by sunday evening, scattered showers all across the bay area. and could get heavy at times. and could get pretty windy as well. and yes it is going to affect the nfc championship game. and of course we have a big 49ers game and kickoff at 3:30. so your rain future cast, we could see .3 of an inch or more in san francisco. by sunday evening. at 6:00. and so it could get wet. and it looks like the rain showers are going to continue. sunday overnight. through the monday morning commute. and pinpoint forecast, your overnight lows, mostly in the 40s. and 43 in oakland.

43 in san rafael. we are expecting some clouds to roll in and kind of keeping temperatures on the more mild side overnight. and once again, temperatures tomorrow in the mid-50s across the bay area. so we are dry. for now. that is the key. for tomorrow, it is our third storm system moving in since thursday. and it could get heavy at times. there is even a chance of some thunderstorms. and moving in sunday evening. into monday morning. so once again, the morning, the monday morning commute, it is likely going to be a wet one. we should be clearing up and drying out by monday afternoon. and sticking around for the dry weather conditions tuesday through the end of the week and temperatures on the more mild side with pretty chilly nights and once again, everyone is watching football. and we got the big nfc 49ers championship game. we have a chance of rain. it looks like it could move in with the bulk of the showers just in time for kickoff. by about mid afternoon. and could be on and off showers throughout the length of the game. with the temperatures in the mid-50s. winds could be at issue as well. that's a look at weather. for a look at sports, of course we're talking football and here is kim with more on that.

ny team in th did you know that the new york giants have won more road games than any team in the nfl since 2007? so it is no surprise that they were excited to travel out to the bay area. >> san francisco, here we come!

[ laughter ] >> i guess i got to do something now. >> and the stanford women beat washington 65-47. for their 65th straight conference win. neka agrumkay led the cardinals with 17 points and seven rebounds. the weekend did not go as smoothly for johnny dawkins team as they lose to both washington schools. the huskies took control in the second half thanks to an 18-2 run. they go on to win 76-63. the cardinals lose back-to-back games for the first time this

season. washington state beat cal 77-75. and with the loss, the bears drop back into a tie for first in the pac12. in the northwest, usf beat portland, 72-71. top-ranked syracuse is off to their best start in school history. but that didn't impress notre dame. they led the entire game. jack cooley dunks it over two orange defenders. let the party begin in south bend as the irish hand sear cuss the first loss of the season leaving murray state the only team still undefeated. florida state and duke tied with four seconds left. >> wow. there. , oh, he made it. >> florida state wins 76-73. to end duke's 45-home game winning streak. the sharks and canucks duking it out in vancouver. the two teams still not crazy about each other after the

western conference finals. second period. logan couture scores on the back hand to give the sharks a 2-1 lead. he scored twice with 20 goals on the season. third period tied at three. corey hodson chases down the puck in the corner and his shot is redirected by michael hansus for the game winner and the canucks beat the sharks 4-3. last year monty ellis had the game winning shot in the final seconds to beat the pacers but history would not repeat itself last nice in oakland. >> he's got to go now. he's got to go. you do not want the clock to run down. >> there is the steal. hill is going to be fouled. and lays it in. >> george hill wins it for the pacers. but take another look. hill appears to kick the ball. today the nba issued a statement saying the ref made a mistake last night and a kickball should have been called. speaking of bad break, the
