>> this the "cbs morning news" for monday, january 23rd, 2012. good morning everyone. i'm terrell brown. the suddenly up for grabs race pnomination is centered in tial florida this morning on the heels of newt gingrich's upset, the candidates hold the first of two florida debates tonight. cbs news estimates mitt romney holds a slight lead in delegate count. more than 1100 are needed to claim the gop nomination. florida will be a prize. there are 50 delegates up for grab in the sunshine state. it's a winner take all contest. tara mergener is in washington with more. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, terrell. gingrich's comeback has raised the stake. the race is wide open and the battle in florida will likely be grueling. mitt romney is in florida and wasting no time attacking newt gingrich. >> it was proven that he was a failed leader. >> romney lost big to gingrich

in saturday's south carolina primary. now he's reminding voters about the ethics charges gingrich faced while speaker of the house. >> and he had to resign in disgrace. i don't know whether you knew that. he actually resigned after four years in disgrace. >> gingrich says his experience in washington makes him the better candidate. >> governor romney may be running for see owe. i'm running for president. president has to understand the government of united states. barack obama clearly didn't and candidly, i doubt if governor romney would. >> the attacks are expected to get worse as we get closer to the primary on the 31st. the four remaining candidates will face off in another debate tonight. ron paul will be at the debate but will not campaign in florida. he plans to spend time in smaller states where he expects to be more competitive. rick santorum is vowing to stay in the race. even though he's finished third in south carolina. >> we're going to go out and campaign all up and down the state of florida. >> but when it comes to money, santorum and the other

candidates fall short of romney, who still has the largest and best-funded campaign. gingrich is hoping his latest win will convince supporters to open up their wallets. before the south carolina primary, mitt romney was criticized for not releasing his tax returns. he has now agreed to do so by tuesday. terrell? >> wide open race now. tara mergener in washington. severe weather moving through parts of the south. possible tornadoes in arkansas. no reports of injuries. the system brought hail, lightning and strong winds to arkansas, tennessee, illinois and mississippi last night. the system is expected to move through the ohio valley later today. in the upper midwest, the problem is freezing rain. expected to turn into snow later today. roads are iced over in wisconsin, minnesota and north dakota. national weather service has issued a winter weather advisory for all three states. an earthquake rattled hawaii's big island. no reports of injuries or damage.

the 5.0 quake hit last night centered beneath the kilauea volcano. there to be 20 aftershocks but no tsunami threat. friends and colleagues are mourning joe paterno this morning. paterno, the winningest coach in major college football died yesterday of lung cancer at the age of 85. paterno was head coach at penn state for 46 years. his career came to a shocking end when a former assistant coach was accused of molesting young boys. here's the report. >> hundreds of fans held a vigil on the penn state campus to remember the man they called joe pa. >> the celebration then moved to joe paterno's statute outside the football stadium where a memorial is growing. he died sunday from complications of lung cancer. >> i think he represented the best parts of this place. the soul of what it's about. >> his family issued a statement saying he was a man devoted to his family, his university, his

players and his community. paterno's career came to a sudden end in his 46th season. he was fired over how he handled the child molestation allegations surrounding jerry sandusky, his former assistant coach. he was criticized for not going to the police. in his final interview, paterno talked to the washington post about getting fired and being diagnosed with cancer within weeks of each other. >> the good lord has a reason. i'm not as concerned about me. what's happened to me has been great. five great kids, 17 great grandchildren. >> people have been gathering here for days and joe paterno himself was aware of it. his son tweeted that his father was inspired bit outpouring of love and support. >> people will remember what a great man he was and how much he did for this university. >> more than 250 of the players paterno coached went on to the nfl. but even students who were not athletes looked up to him. >> like a father figure. a role model. >> his family says his loss

leaves a void that will never be filled. manuel gall e.g., os. jerry sandusky maintains his innocence and issued this statement. this is a sad day. joe preached toughness, hard work and clean competition. he had the kushcourage to pract what he preached. nobody can take away the memories we shared of a great man, his family and the great people who were part of his leave. flight 980 was en route from brazil to miami. it landed safely in miami last night. passengers say there was a huge sudden drop. >> the food cart went all the way up and hit the ceiling. made a huge hole in the area. the flight attendants were back there and one flew and landed in the hallway. the other woman, she hit the ceiling. when she came down the cart hit her. >> there were 136 passengers and

the u.s. may shut down the embassy in damascus. two senators offered a bill for sanctions. >> including hardware, software, telecommunications equipment and other technology that the president determines to be used specifically to restrict the free flow of information or to disrupt monitor or otherwise restrict the free speech of the syrian people. >> the legislation also offers protection to pro democracy demonstrators. the u.s. has ignored a threat by a roon and sent an aircraft carrier into the persian gulf. the uss abraham lincoln sailed through the strait of hormuz yesterday without incident. it was a routine maneuver. in december they threat yented to close the strait for economic sanctions against them. they backed off that threat this weekend. coming up later on "cbs this morning," a look back at the legacy of penn state football coach joe paterno. i'm terrell brown.

violence in his community. cynthia bowers reports. >> they took you away from me. >> at a funeral on chicago's south side, natalia malone said goodbye to her son for the last time. the 15-year-old who was looking forward to his first date was gunned down outside his home. >> it's got to stop. i don't want to lose another one, no, not like this. i don't. >> for the pastor, it was his 12th funeral for a young murder victim in the past year. >> we've become experts at funerals and burying people. this is not the way society ought to be. >> last november, brooks took a drastic step to stop the violence. he pitched a tent on the sop of a motel vowing to stay there until this bidding is torn down. he sees it as a magnet for drugs and crime. >> i don't wrant do another funeral. i want to help these young men grow to their potential.

that's the primary reason i'm on this roof. >> he made it 44 days before being asked by grieving relatives to come down to bury their young sons. malone and a 16-year-old, ross, killed in a shootout at a fast food restaurant. >> my grandson plonbelonged to not whoever took it upon themselves to kill them. >> pastor brooks was then back on the roof more determined than ever. >> i believe when people understand the magnitude of this problem and when they understand the violence that's going on, the people that are dying and that something can be done about it, then i believe they'll give. >> since brooks began his rooftop crusade, 61 days ago, a growing number of people have been stopping by to donate, including illinois governor, pat quinn. brooks has more than half the $450,000 he needs to demolish the motel. one day he hopes to build a community center in its place.
