>> this the "cbs morning news" for monday, january 23rd, 2012. good morning everyone. i'm terrell brown. the suddenly up for grabs race pnomination is centered in tial florida this morning on the heels of newt gingrich's upset, the candidates hold the first of two florida debates tonight. cbs news estimates mitt romney holds a slight lead in delegate count. more than 1100 are needed to claim the gop nomination. florida will be a prize. there are 50 delegates up for grab in the sunshine state. it's a winner take all contest. tara mergener is in washington with more. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, terrell. gingrich's comeback has raised the stake. the race is wide open and the battle in florida will likely be grueling. mitt romney is in florida and wasting no time attacking newt gingrich. >> it was proven that he was a failed leader. >> romney lost big to gingrich

in saturday's south carolina primary. now he's reminding voters about the ethics charges gingrich faced while speaker of the house. >> and he had to resign in disgrace. i don't know whether you knew that. he actually resigned after four years in disgrace. >> gingrich says his experience in washington makes him the better candidate. >> governor romney may be running for see owe. i'm running for president. president has to understand the government of united states. barack obama clearly didn't and candidly, i doubt if governor romney would. >> the attacks are expected to get worse as we get closer to the primary on the 31st. the four remaining candidates will face off in another debate tonight. ron paul will be at the debate but will not campaign in florida. he plans to spend time in smaller states where he expects to be more competitive. rick santorum is vowing to stay in the race. even though he's finished third in south carolina. >> we're going to go out and campaign all up and down the state of florida. >> but when it comes to money, santorum and the other

candidates fall short of romney, who still has the largest and best-funded campaign. gingrich is hoping his latest win will convince supporters to open up their wallets. before the south carolina primary, mitt romney was criticized for not releasing his tax returns. he has now agreed to do so by tuesday. terrell? >> wide open race now. tara mergener in washington. severe weather moving through parts of the south. possible tornadoes in arkansas. no reports of injuries. the system brought hail, lightning and strong winds to arkansas, tennessee, illinois and mississippi last night. the system is expected to move through the ohio valley later today. in the upper midwest, the problem is freezing rain. expected to turn into snow later today. roads are iced over in wisconsin, minnesota and north dakota. national weather service has issued a winter weather advisory for all three states. an earthquake rattled hawaii's big island. no reports of injuries or damage.

the 5.0 quake hit last night centered beneath the kilauea volcano. there to be 20 aftershocks but no tsunami threat. friends and colleagues are mourning joe paterno this morning. paterno, the winningest coach in major college football died yesterday of lung cancer at the age of 85. paterno was head coach at penn state for 46 years. his career came to a shocking end when a former assistant coach was accused of molesting young boys. here's the report. >> hundreds of fans held a vigil on the penn state campus to remember the man they called joe pa. >> the celebration then moved to joe paterno's statute outside the football stadium where a memorial is growing. he died sunday from complications of lung cancer. >> i think he represented the best parts of this place. the soul of what it's about. >> his family issued a statement saying he was a man devoted to his family, his university, his

players and his community. paterno's career came to a sudden end in his 46th season. he was fired over how he handled the child molestation allegations surrounding jerry sandusky, his former assistant coach. he was criticized for not going to the police. in his final interview, paterno talked to the washington post about getting fired and being diagnosed with cancer within weeks of each other. >> the good lord has a reason. i'm not as concerned about me. what's happened to me has been great. five great kids, 17 great grandchildren. >> people have been gathering here for days and joe paterno himself was aware of it. his son tweeted that his father was inspired bit outpouring of love and support. >> people will remember what a great man he was and how much he did for this university. >> more than 250 of the players paterno coached went on to the nfl. but even students who were not athletes looked up to him. >> like a father figure. a role model. >> his family says his loss

leaves a void that will never be filled. manuel gall e.g., os. jerry sandusky maintains his innocence and issued this statement. this is a sad day. joe preached toughness, hard work and clean competition. he had the kushcourage to pract what he preached. nobody can take away the memories we shared of a great man, his family and the great people who were part of his leave. flight 980 was en route from brazil to miami. it landed safely in miami last night. passengers say there was a huge sudden drop. >> the food cart went all the way up and hit the ceiling. made a huge hole in the area. the flight attendants were back there and one flew and landed in the hallway. the other woman, she hit the ceiling. when she came down the cart hit her. >> there were 136 passengers and

nine crew members on board. the injured crew were taken to hospitals for treatment. not clear how severe the injuries are. gabrielle giffords is resigning this week to focus on her recovery from a gunshot wound. today is part of her last official act as a member of congress. she'll finish the meet and greet that ended more than a year ago when a gunman opened fire. eye necessary fer a has the report. >> the announcement was posted online video. she survived a bullet to the head a year ago, is stepping down. >> i have more work to do on my recovery. so to do what is best for arizona, i will step down this week. >> giffords' recovery is seen by many as a miracle. she was wounded along with 16 others in a tucson shooting spree that left six people dead. since then, she has been going through intense rehabilitation. just two weeks ago shall the

congresswoman, along with family members and friends, held a memorial service to mark the first anniversary of that tragic day. >> one nation, under god. >> her friends and supporters are encouraged by her strength. >> i'm very admiring of what she's gone through and her tenacity and her intelligence. >> her personality, of course, and her dedication to her constituents, i think, was exemplary. >> giffords says arizona will always be her home. she ends the video with words of assurance that she's getting better. >> my spirit is high. i will return. and we will work together for arizona and this great country. thank you very much. >> giffords is expected to attend the president's state of the union address on tuesday before she steps down. she will also finish the congress on your corner event that was interrupted last year by the shooting.

the hong canning hang seng is closed for the new year. both the dow and the nasdaq gained more than 2% last week. it's the best start of the year for the u.s. stock market in 15 years. the federal reserve kicks off a two-day meeting this week and for the first time the fed will publish quarterly forecasts of where the members see interest rates heading. part of the central bank's plan to be more transparent. gas prices are still on the rise according to the lundberg survey. the average price of a gallon of regular is now $3.39. that's an increase of $3.50 over the last two week. the founders of the company that make blackberry devices are stepping down as co-ceo's. jim balsillie and mike lazaridis resigned from research in motion on sunday. the canadian company has struggled to compete with the iphone and the android devices. research in motion's value has

fallen more than $60 billion in the last few years. vampires ruled at the box office this weekend. underworld awakening starring kate beckinsale debuted at number one making $25.4 million. 15% of the box office haul, nearly $4 million was made on imax screens. and an online bidder is now the owner of two guns thought to have been used by bonnie and clyde. the tommy gun and a .12 gauge shotgun sold for $210,000 on saturday. the weapons are believed to have been seized from bonnie and clyde's hideout in joplin, missouri. let's hope they're right about that. >> people will buy anything, ashley. they don't know if it is bonnie and clyde's. >> i was about to say, we're going to toys-r-us after the show, we'll buy something and do the same thing. >> make a little money. >> ashley morrison in new york. thank you. we'll have your monday morning weather forecast coming up.

degrees. dallas, 67 degrees. rain in los angeles, 60 degrees. let's get a check of the national forecast. satellite picture shows a massive system moving across the west coast. another patch of storms, cloud a long the northern plains, clear in the central part the country. in sports this morning, boy oh, boy, new york giants take down the 49ers in o.t. big blue headed to the super bowl. hard fought game. manning under pressure. managed two td passes to get the giants into overtime and this is the play that caused san fran the game. fumbles the punt. the giants pounce on the bowl. puts it through the uprights from 31 yards out. giants over the 49ers, 20-17. >> i'm proud of the way our players played, proud of the way they prepared, they worked, they competed. and wasn't there for us today.

before next week's primary. romney will release his tax returns tomorrow. hundreds gathered last night on the campus of penn state university to remember long time football coach, joe paterno. he died yesterday at the age of 85 from complications of lung cancer. to the latest on the cruise ship disaster off the coast of italy. divers are back in the water searching for more victims. they're using explosives to open blocked passageway. yesterday they found another body. bringing the total to 13. 19 more missing. also yesterday the son and daughter of a missing minnesota couple taken out on a boat to lay a wreath in the water. in syria, embattled president al assad -- they demanded he hand overpower and set up a new government. syrian officials call it a violation of their sovereignty. yesterday a mass protest at a funeral was posted on a social media site. during the ten-month uprising. u.n. estimates more than 5,000 people have been killed.

the u.s. may shut down the embassy in damascus. two senators offered a bill for sanctions. >> including hardware, software, telecommunications equipment and other technology that the president determines to be used specifically to restrict the free flow of information or to disrupt monitor or otherwise restrict the free speech of the syrian people. >> the legislation also offers protection to pro democracy demonstrators. the u.s. has ignored a threat by a roon and sent an aircraft carrier into the persian gulf. the uss abraham lincoln sailed through the strait of hormuz yesterday without incident. it was a routine maneuver. in december they threat yented to close the strait for economic sanctions against them. they backed off that threat this weekend. coming up later on "cbs this morning," a look back at the legacy of penn state football coach joe paterno. i'm terrell brown.

laura decker, that would be her. back on land after a record breaking trip at 16 years old. she became the youngest person to sail around the world solo. decker arrived on st. marten on saturday after a year long trip at sea that covered 27,000 nautical miles. authorities tried to block her voyage saying it was too dangerous. did all that at 16. what do you do now? in chicago, a pastor started a movement of sorts. he's camping out on the roof of a motel to take a stand against

violence in his community. cynthia bowers reports. >> they took you away from me. >> at a funeral on chicago's south side, natalia malone said goodbye to her son for the last time. the 15-year-old who was looking forward to his first date was gunned down outside his home. >> it's got to stop. i don't want to lose another one, no, not like this. i don't. >> for the pastor, it was his 12th funeral for a young murder victim in the past year. >> we've become experts at funerals and burying people. this is not the way society ought to be. >> last november, brooks took a drastic step to stop the violence. he pitched a tent on the sop of a motel vowing to stay there until this bidding is torn down. he sees it as a magnet for drugs and crime. >> i don't wrant do another funeral. i want to help these young men grow to their potential.

that's the primary reason i'm on this roof. >> he made it 44 days before being asked by grieving relatives to come down to bury their young sons. malone and a 16-year-old, ross, killed in a shootout at a fast food restaurant. >> my grandson plonbelonged to not whoever took it upon themselves to kill them. >> pastor brooks was then back on the roof more determined than ever. >> i believe when people understand the magnitude of this problem and when they understand the violence that's going on, the people that are dying and that something can be done about it, then i believe they'll give. >> since brooks began his rooftop crusade, 61 days ago, a growing number of people have been stopping by to donate, including illinois governor, pat quinn. brooks has more than half the $450,000 he needs to demolish the motel. one day he hopes to build a community center in its place.
