it is 4:30. we still have a freeway on-ramp in daly city, breaking down, after a full weekend of rain. >> it is a ramp that connects john daily boulevard with interstate 280. gill diaz is on the scene in daly city to tell us about the damage. what happened out there? >> reporter: good morning. as we're standing on the on- ramp to 280 northbound off the john daily boulevard, you might not be able to see. but there are blinking lights on the corner. that is caltrans fixing up a section of that on-ramp because of broken asphalt. chp officer told me a few minutes ago that caltrans is fixing and filling a section of that on-ramp that had patch work done on it previously. and obviously that first time around of patch work didn't work. so this time, they're laying down cold patch, because of the cold weather. a temporary solution until the weather clears up and then something more permanent. but they have this, closed off. they have had it closed off publicly for the past couple of

hours. chp says caltrans might be able to be finished with that patch work within the next hour or 45 minutes. keep it right here on cbs 5 as we will give you more details as when this on-ramp of 280 north opens up again. to tell us more about the weather even though it is starting to drizzle right now is elizabeth wenger. we will send it back to you with the weather outlook. >> hi, gil. a good visual for what is going on out there. a little rain. a little wind to start off with. light to moderate showers across the bay area right now. it looks like it will stick with us, at least through the start and even much of the morning commute. here is a look at the high def doppler, very busy this morning and has been very active since yesterday. so we also have a wind alert in effect for the coast, the east bay hills and the santa cruz mountains, it should expire around 6:00 this morning. in the meantime we're seeing winds 20 to 30 miles per hour. in some gusts gusting to 50 miles per hour. between the winds and the rain, it is kind of a more dangerous start to our morning commute. so be extra careful of course on the roadways. temperatures outside right now,

not too bad. right now, 53 in vallejo. looks like 55 in san rafael. and 55 in san francisco. and so wet and windy start, that's the name of the game at least for the beginning of this morning. you can see the low, it is sit there and slowly move to the southeast bringing high pressure and dry weather for the rest of the week. we will talk more about that coming up. in the meantime, look at your highs for today. mid to upper 50s. 56 in san rafael. 56 in vallejo. 58 in concord. a quick look at the next couple of days. again, rain and wind to start you off with. we could see a few lingering sprinkles this afternoon. and then check out tuesday and wednesday, through the rest of the week, staying dry and mild. and some of those temperatures, and some of the inland valleys, above average for this time of the year. we just have to get through the wet stuff now. with more on your roadways let's go to giano with a look at traffic. >> the wet and windy start will cause problems on the freeways. a wind advisory for the san mateo bridge this morning. extra caution as you work your way across the span. of course we are dealing with

slick surfaces as well. we have an accident westbound 580. through livermore. it is over to the right shoulder. a bit of a backup as you work your way through there. once you get past, reports of flooding as you make the 580/680 connect ner the dublin interchange. look out for some slick surfaces there. an early morning traffic alert, westbound 80 near gillman involving an accident with a big rig. that has canceled and everything is off to the right shoulder. and you can see in the sensors we're still seeing a bit of a backup through there. and all lanes are open and once you approach the bay bridge toll plaza, a few cars on the roadway, a little slow and go and overall no metering lights are on. and you're clear across the upper deck into san francisco. that's a look at your time saver traffic. 4:34. the san francisco 49ers fell just short of making it to the super bowl. but it was a thrilling game at candlestick park. couldn't keep your eyes off the screen. >> a sometime consumer until the last few seconds. >> new york giants beat the 49ers in overtime. 20-17. a 49er fumble on a punt return.

i cannot watch it. it led to the game-winning field goal by the giants in overtime. giants fans outnumbered at the stick but they were generally feeling very welcome here in san francisco. >> we flew all the way out from the east coast and here for the game. >> gotham city all the way. >> we still love you niners. >> we got them next year. >> good job, harbaugh. >> well, police will have details today on arrests at the game but say it was mostly peaceful. there was one incident involving pepper spray. but nobody seriously injured. last night's game, as we mentioned it goes into overtime. one more time, kyle williams, stripped fumbled, second time that happened. the giants recovered deep in 49ers territory. here is what happened. set up a 31-yard field goal for lawrence tynn. and that's it. they will face the patriots in the super bowl a week from next sunday in indianapolis. >> a lot of people are talking

about this, it of course made the front of the san francisco chronicle this morning. >> i know. this could have been a keepsake forever. had things gone a little bit differently but you see here dreams slip away. and we've got the other one. >> the front of the sports page, kyle williams, of course, we just showed you the fumble, that they were talking about, and then the punt return. >> it is just so tough. because you invested so much time watching the game and it was such an emotional rollercoaster and u-knew it was going -- and you knew it was going to come down to one little detail and this is a team that never turned the ball over. the 49ers had one of the best give-away-take away ratios in the league and the two of fumbles both sadly by kyle williams turned into points for the giants and that's how they lost the game. >> the big winner, the giants celebrating. they are the front of news day. there it is. they are headed to the super bowl. souper. >> new yorkers are so obnoxious, aren't they? >> they are now. who can blame them? they are super. a rematch of the super bowl back in '07-'08.

when the patriots were trying to have that perfect season. and the giants came down the last couple of minutes. and kind of grabbed that victory away. so imagine the patriots are pretty happy because they get another shot. >> and you know after spending so much time in bostonly. >> got kicked in the teeth there and again here. but next year. next year. meanwhile san francisco mayor ed lee issued a statement congratulating the 49ers on a great year. the hometown team, amazing season. it will continue to inspire us on and off the field. we cannot wait until kickoff next season. go niners. the only people who feel worst than us is mr. and mrs. harbaugh that were 0-2 over the weekend. 4:37. a female san francisco prosecutor was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of domestic violence. 34-year-old sinoz nickian was booked into jail and released after posting bail.

the state attorney handling the case to avoid a potential conflict of interest. she and her husband are not commenting. the san francisco comment mirkarimi has two more court dates this week. a a hearing today, a date could be set for the hearing for the trial for the charges. and pleading not guilty in an emotional arraignment last week. on thursday, there is another hearing this week, and there is a consideration of an order of staying away from his wife and son until the trial is over. a very busy week for him. two serial killers, naso, acting as his own attorney in marin county court and he is scheduled to finish closing arguments at a preliminary hearing and then the judge will decide if there is enough evidence to put him on trial for the murders of four women back in the 1970s and the 1990s. later this morning, san jose police will give us more details about last week's amber

alert that ended with the suspect being killed by officers. they say 42-year-old tree lake kidnapped a girl from her home. and that afternoon, police traced the suspect to an apartment complex on pistachio drive. still holding the victim. he was killed in a shootout with police. the girl was returned to her father uninjured. this morning the police chief will hold a news conference with more details about the crime. and six people are hurt after gunfire broke out at a sweet 16 birthday in antioch. this happened saturday night on will month court. police think three to four young men did the shooting. in a garage. the 21-year-old woman was shot in the abdomen. the other people injured are all teenagers. a neighbor came home around 10:30 to find dozens of kids near her yard. >> we actually heard five minutes, it is going down. five minutes it is going down. we went into our house, and no sooner did we go into our house than there were shots fired. >> neighbors received a flyer earlier saturday warning them

the school's former football coach. he passed away yesterday of lung cancer. former students said he will be remembered for his accomplishments off the field. >> people will remember what a great man he was and how much he did for this university. not just the football program. but the entire university. >> penn state's board of trustees fired paterno days after sex abuse allegations surfaced publicly. paterno's former assistant coach jerry sandusky is charged with 52 counts of child molestation. congress woman gabrielle giffords will be in tucson to finish a meet and meet, and she reveals plans to resign from congress. >> i have more work to do on my recovery. so to do what is best for arizona, i will step down this week. >> giffords is expected to attend the president's state of the union address tomorrow.

arizona's governor will set a special election to fill out the rest of giffords term. and president obama will be hanging out in a chat room answering questions about his state of the union address. the 45-minute chat will happen monday, capping off a week of social media engagements planned around the president's state of the union speech. questions for the president can be submitted through youtube. republican candidates for president campaigning this morning, off to florida, and the attacks, as you might imagine, are already flying. mitt romney lost to newt gingrich by 14 percentage points in south carolina primary saturday. and florida's primary shaping up as a pivotal contest for the g.o.p. romney is trying to remind voters they're about the ethics charges gingrich faced as speaker of the house. >> he resigned in disgrace. i don't know if you knew that. he resigned after four years in disgrace. >> gingrich says his experience in washington makes him a

19 people are still missing from the cruise ship that wrecked in italy on january 13. divers found the 13th known victim yesterday. a woman who was wearing a life jacket. today, italian officials are expected to decide whether the search for those still missing can continue while they pump 2400 tons of fuel oil from that ship. several flight tenants are recovering after a rough flight on the atlantic ocean. six crew members from brazil to miami were injured during what described as severe turbulence. the plane apparently hit an air pocket causing a steep drop in altitude. >> the two flight attendants there are back there and one flew up and landed in the hallway. >> some crew members had to be taken to the hospital. others were treated scene. 4:48. a risky mountain rescue in

southern california. an l.a. sheriff's helicopter team pulled a hiker from a steep mountain side, with a health- mounted -- helmet-mounted camera showing rescuers what they saw when they plucked the woman from an 100-foot cliff. and it was a success. nobody was hurt. but you can see how dangerous it is for what those guys do right there. strong winds and tornadoes have been blowing through the southeast. some video here taken by a storm chaser in eastern arkansas. there was possibly some tornadoes in five different counties. there and this morning tornado warnings are in effect in tennessee, mississippi and alabama. and the storms are dropping hail in several states and no reports of any injuries but quite the light show there. a rock slide in monterey county has forced a closure of highway 1 in both directions. and the slide happened last night, about 25 miles south of big sur. and caltrans engineers plan to inspect the area later this morning. and the slide zone is reported to be unstable and hazardous. there is no estimate for when

the wind advisory for the coast and east bay mountains. and treacherous for the morning commute. be careful on the roadways. you will see some ponding out there. by this afternoon, we're clearing out. fog could be an issue. clouds are going to roll in. and temperatures are relatively on the mild side. pretty typical for this time of the year. mostly mid to upper 50s. so what we got going on right now, we are closely watching this low. it has been there since last night, as grace mentioned wet and windy start. so if it affects the morning commute, we will track it out with future cast right now and the skas across the bay area now -- the scattered showers across the bay area now and by noon, clearing out and a few pockets of rain, but nothing much and then by the evening commute home, by about 6:00 this evening, everything should pretty much be out of here and then we're left with the dry rest of the week. so your pinpoint forecast for later on today, mostly in the mid to upper 50s. 57 in fairfield. and 56 in vallejo. and san francisco. coming in at 56 degrees. so once again, we just got one more morning of this moisture, and the wind and rain, to start you off with. and then by this afternoon, we

about a wind advisory for the richmond san rafael bridge and use caution there also. coming out of marin county, so far, so good, dealing with slick surfaces this morning. approaching the golden gate bridge, no problems as far as accidents go but a little sluggish if you work your way into san francisco. again, slower speeds. due to the slick surfaces. because of the rain. now we do have some flooding to report. westbound 24. and through orinda. reports of puddling there in the left lane. and use caution as you work your way through there. and word of puddling as well. flooding as you head toward the 580/680 dublin interchange. an earlier wreck along 580 westbound. near livermore. but that is now clear. and also chp just wrapped up this accident, south 17 at bear creek road. that is now out of lanes over to the right shoulder and you can see in the sensors we are still seeing some sluggish conditions and speeds less than 40 miles an hour as you work northbound and southbound along highway 17. and the rest of the south bay, accident free. that's the good thing. and a little slow and go as you work your way on the southbound side of 101. 280, no problems for downtown san jose. and guadalupe parkway clear and

people in oakland's chinatown started the celebration yesterday. it is the year of the dragon. according to the chinese zodiac calendar, a reason to be optimistic. why not? san francisco's china town will hold the new years festival and parade, on february 11. we've got a happy ending to tell you about. it happened in washington, after a pregnant woman got stuck in an elevator. >> yes, they are two expecting parents driving through the snow and ice trying to make it to st. joseph hospital. but on the way to the delivery room, they make it to the hospital, and nurses had trouble with the elevator and they decided to use a different one, they got the father out in time but the mother got stuck. >> what is up with that? >> we got on the other elevator and went to the 14th floor and expecting to see them shortly and the doors didn't open. and they didn't open for about two hours. >> wow. baby blake was born in the elevator. 20 minutes later. so now he earned the nickname
