good morning, everybody, and thanks for joining us. i'm betty nguyen. the battle for presidential nomination has changed now just one week before the florida primary. a new mitt romney has emerged, ready to attack the surging newt gingrich in heated and personal terms. that was made clear during last night's debate, but today romney's tax returns are likely to take center stage. susan mcginnis is in washington with that. good morning, susan. >> good morning. there were very heated moments last night in this debate. romney, more aggressive than you have ever seen him before. you could really feel the stakes are getting higher ahead of the florida primary. after the debate, romney releases some about his income and taxes. >> he made more than $40 million in the past two years.

in 2010, 40% went to pay taxes, a rate lower than what most pay because most of his money comes from investments. his returns show he also gave $3 million to charity, including $1.5 million to the mormon church. romney decided to release his tax returns after coming under fire from his republican rivals, but he tried to make last night's debate more about the finances of his opponent newt gingrich and his work with housing lender freddie mac. >> freddie mac was paying speaker gingrich $1.6 million at the same time freddie mac was costing the people of florida millions and millions of dollars. >> he accused him of peddling influence. a charge the speaker denies. >> it's not correct, mitt. you've been walking around the state saying things that are untrue. >> the florida primary is just seven days away and much of the focus is on mitt romney and newt gingrich. rick santorum is trying to paint

himself as the true conservative in this race. >> my question to governor romney and to speaker gingrich, if you believe in capitalism that much, then why did you support the bailout of wall street. >> ron paul brushed off accusations that he's not electable. >> what about if you compare my name to obama? >> i do quite well if not better than the rest. >> the four candidates meet again for another debate on thursday night. and romney will reveal more of his tax information today, and all of this ahead of the president's state of the union speech tonight, which is considered a major, major campaign event, betty. this speech can get 40 to 50 million viewers, far more than any of these debates. >> i tell you what, we'll both be watching. all right. thank you, susan. >> thanks. well, no matter who the republicans nominate, the key issue of the campaign will be the economy, and that's the heart of president obama's state of the union address tonight. the president outlined his themes during a speech in kansas last month. >> the president will build off the themes of that kansas speech in the state of the union by

laying out a blueprint for an america built to last. the blueprint will be supported by four pillars, american manufacturing, american energy, skills for american workers, and american values. >> speaker boehner says it sounds like it will be a rehash of unhelpful policies and went on to call it, quote, pathetic. cbs news will bring you live coverage of the president's address and the republican response. that happens tonight, 9:00 eastern. a former cia officer has been arrested on charges that he leaked classified information, including the name of an undercover operative. john kiriakou was released on $250,000 bail yesterday. his lawyer says he'll plead not guilty. prosecutors say he told three journalists the role of a cia officer in the capture of a top al qaeda leader. he also allegedly revealed the name of a covert operative. former penn state football coach joe paterno will be buried tomorrow. fans have been paying their

respects for paterno on the penn state campus. paterno died sunday from complications of lung cancer. >> like everybody's been saying, he was so much more than just a coach. he was a good guy, and i think, you know, he tried to get that goodness to rub off on all of his players. >> paterno was the head coach at penn state for 46 years. he was fired in november amid a child sex abuse scandal. public viewings are scheduled for today and tomorrow. a memorial service on campus is planned for thursday. on the "cbs moneywatch," mortgage lenders agree to one of the biggest settlements in history, and economic leader s will get the cold shoulder from protesters in davos. ashley morrison is here with that and so much more. good morning, ashley. and good morning to you, betty. in overseas trading, another flat day in asia. tokyo's nikkei rose to a quarter percent while hong kong's hang seng remains closed for the lunar new year.

on wall street investors find out apple's first quarter earnings today. it will be their first report since selling the iphone 4s. on monday the dow's four-day winning streak came to an end. it lost 11 points while the nasdaq lost just 2 points. iran is once again threatening to shut down the strait of hormuz, a move that is sending oil prices higher. iran renewed its vow to block oil shipments after european union leaders approved a new round of sanctions. the eu is punishing iran for its newly deming nuclear program. it's closing at nearly $100 a barrel. the five largest mortgage holders in the u.s. are changing the way they're handling foreclosure filings. they will agree to pay $25 billion. that money would be used to lower the principle for about a million troubled homeowners. the banks agreed to the deal after many employees admitted to signing foreclosure documents without reading them. this week some of the world's most influential

financial leaders will meet at the world economic forum in davos, switzerland, but this year the occupy movement will try to have its voice heard at the exclusive summit. protesters have set up an igloo camp in the ski resort town. it begins with a keynote address by germany's angela merkel. a lawsuit with garth brooks against a hospital goes to court today. the country music star claims the hospital agreed to name a cancer center after his mother in exchange for a $500,000 donation. brooks donated the money but the center was never built. the hospital claims he never specified what he wanted in exchange for the money. and starbucks will begin selling beer and wine at more of its locations. they plan to add alcohol sales to as many as 25 select shops by the end of the year. now you can get it all there, a little coffee, beer, wine. >> do they come in three different sizes like the coffee does? >> you know, it's probably as big a beer as you want, betty.

gps systems, cause blackouts, and destroy sensitive satellite equipment. nasa says the six astronauts on the international space station do not have to do anything to protect themselves from the radiation. that's a little bit of good news. there's been a new round of apparent sectarian violence in iraq this morning. the wave of attacks has left at least 14 dead and more than 70 wounded. the first attack targeted a group of day laborers in baghdad and minutes later a car bomb exploded nearby. some 170 people have been killed since the beginning of the year, and escalating violence since u.s. troops left the country on december 18th. a stunning end to the trial of the marine who took his men on a shooting rampage in hadithah, iraq, in 2005, killing 24 people. sergeant frank wuterich will be sentenced today. he cut a deal yesterday that could send him to jail for only three months. he'll also be demoted to private. the government had charged him and seven other marines for manslaughter but failed to get

one conviction. two more bodies have been pulled from the grounded cruise ship off italy. so far 15 bodies have been found. 17 are still missing. yesterday the italian coast guard released new video of the rock that ripped a hole in the ship's hull. you can see what appears to be a massive piece of scrunched up metal. meanwhile officials can begin pumping fuel from the ship as early as today. an oil slick was spotted by helicopters yesterday. clean-up is under way in parts of the south this morning as well after deadly tornadoes roared through the area killing at least two people and injuring more than 100. at least 200 homes were destroyed. alabama's governor has declared a state of emergency. cbs's mark strassmann has the latest. >> reporter: this is your bedroom. wow. she was startled awake at 4:00 a.m. by the sound of 150-mile-per-hour winds. when you look at your son's room now, it's amazing, isn't it?

>> i can't believe he was sleeping in that bed just minutes before this happened. he was in that bed. >> reporter: and this is the bathtub where she and her husband darted for cover with their 2-year-old son mitchell. >> we got in the tub, he got on top of us, and we just prayed our way three it. we just prayed our way through it. it's like the only thing in the house still standing is that bathroom. >> what were you doing? >> just praying. we just laid down in the bathtub and started praying. >> the only thing i could think of is i couldn't hold on to them strong enough. my grip wasn't tight enough as it kept feeling like i was losing them. the grip loosened every time i squeezed. that's the only thing i could think about was holding tight. >> reporter: the storm went through the subdivision in clay and left a swath of ruin half a mile wide. the national weather service teams called it an ef-3 tornado, severe storm. >> once we thought it was over, when my husband got up and tried to walk through the house and i heard him yell out, thank you, jesus. i asked him was everything okay.

arizona representative gabrielle giffords returns to washington today. she announced she will resign from her congress seat to focus on her recovery from a gunshot wound last year. yesterday she met for one last time with constituents and took care of some unfinished business. john blackstone reports. >> reporter: gabrielle giffords& arrived at her tucson office to finish her meeting with her constituents that was so violently killed more than a

year ago. a year ago suzie heilmann waited to shake hands. that finally happened. >> i got my handshake. i got to tell her how the government could work better for me, by having more people like her. >> reporter: heilmann was wounded in the leg, and her 9-year-old neighbor christina taylor-green was killed in the shooting. >> what i saw this morning was the bravest thing that i've ever seen anybody to do, to put herself aside for the good of her constituents. it makes you cy. >> reporter: phil badger who wrestled the gunman down in spite of a head wound, came with a blue bracen't bearing giffords ads name. he wore it every day. >> why do you think she's decided not to continue? >> i think it's just like myself. when you come that close to death, your priorities change. >> i don't remember much from that horrible day. >> reporter: giffords announced her decision to step down in a brief video. monday she visited a family
