the polls have been open for about a half hour in florida, which is holding its presidential primary today. susan mcginnis reports from tampa, this is the biggest contest for the republicans so far. reporter: ♪ america, america ♪ >> reporter: mitt romney broke into song's made one final pitch to florida voters. >> and crown thy good with brotherhood. >> reporter: the former massachusetts governor is hoping to crush his competition in today's high stakes primary. withles who showing him holding -- polls showing him holding a solid double-digit lead over newt gingrich he believes victory is his. >> i know speaker gingrich isn't very happy. i know, it's sad. >> reporter: it was only a week ago that gingrich was ahead after an upset win in south carolina. he'll continue crisscrossing florida today determined to make a comeback. >> we have a challenge to go out and make sure that every

conservative knows that the only effective vote to stop romney is a vote for me. >> reporter: gingrich insists he is in this race for the long haul. he claims he is closing in on romney and is already looking ahead to the next contest. >> we're going to go all the way to the convention and we are going to win in tampa and we are going to be the nominee with your help of the republican party. >> reporter: on his campaign plane earlier romney did not appear threatened. >> that's usually the case when you think you're going to lose. you decide to go on no matter what happens. that's not a good sign. >> reporter: a florida win could help put romney on track to clinch the gop nomination. polls show next month's contest tilting in his favor. susan mcginnis, cbs 5. >> comes down to handing out chips on a plane, right? rick santorum and ron paul are lagging in florida so neither is expected to be in florida today. they won't have events in colorado, which holds its caucus one week from today.

♪ [ music ] newt gingrich is being sued for using that song. eye of the tiger written in the 1980s for the band "survivor." the suit seeks an injunction to block the campaign from using the song again and also seeks damage and attorneys fees, as well. secretary of state hillary clinton will push the u.n. security council today to pass a resolution condemning the dictator of syria. bashir assad's forces have violently cracked down on anti- government protestors for almost a year now. united nations says more than 5,000 people have been killed in the middle eastern nation and right now activists say syrian troops are crushing pockets of resistance just outside the capital city of damascus. new this morning, allegations that san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi kept his wife confined to their home on new year's eve. the "chronicle" reports that eliana lopez finally left their

home when mirkarimi took a shower. 18 hours after he allegedly caused a bruise on her arm. prosecutors want to use video taken by the neighbor in their domestic violence case against sheriff mirkarimi. today thousands of workers at kaiser permanente plan to stage a one-day strike in northern california. mental health and optical employees are involved in a dispute over wages and health coverage. their union has been trying to get a new contract since 2010. two other unions representing nurses and engineers have agreed to walk out. this would be a sympathy strike. so today, about 22,000 workers will be on strike. oakland's mayor is talking about a new idea to prevent violence and vandalism by protestors. gil diaz is in oakland this morning where repeat offenders might be ordered to stay away. he joins us with more. gil, good morning. >> reporter: frank, good morning. mayor jean quan is requesting

court orders for 100 protestors, stay-away orders. critics say they're injunctions that the mayor was opposed to when former police chief anthony batts tried to get gang injunctions in the city. here's how the stay-away orders work. the 100 protestors would be forbidden from entering a certain area such as the frank ogawa plaza or all of downtown oakland. if the protestors return, police can make arrests immediately for violating those orders. "occupy oakland" sees this new tactic as hypocracy. >> she can call them stay-away orders. they look like injunctions, they work the same way and for us the same failed policy. >> the mayor at this time is trying to figure out what to do with this movement. >> reporter: a cal berkeley law professor says the stay-away orders could cause backlash to oakland. he says many of these protestors have no money so the city with have a difficult time collecting fines against them and also filling up the oakland

jails with oakland supporters might cause public opinions to sway against the city. as for the movement itself, the protestors have decided on another protest monday at the courthouse. back to you, frank. >> thank you, gil diaz live for us in oakland this morning. "occupy oakland" has lost a lot of support since it started last fall. here's what we found in a poll of oakland voters. 32% of those who supported "occupy oakland" at itsception continue to do so but 20% have changed their minds. as for taking over vacant buildings, 71% oppose that tactic. small businesses could soon be getting a boost. today president obama will call on congress to pass legislation to offer new tax breaks for small companies and to make it easier for startups to raise money. one proposals would include a new 10% tax credit for small businesses that add jobs or increase wages in 2012. 4:37. i commuted this morning. i counted 7 cars. >> i know. yeah.

i just checked the incident reports that we check, the chp incident reports and there is a big fat zero in terms of what's going on right now which is great heading out for the morning commute. what could slow you down is a little bit of overnight roadwork. not across the golden gate bridge, but in novato the delong off or on-ramp, rather, closed until 6:00 this morning. [ clearing throat ] >> the main lines of the freeway look okay from novato down into san rafael. and the there is some more roadwork on the bay bridge. it looks like the left lane on the upper deck and the lower deck, so both directions of eastbound 80 is closed until 6:00 this morning. otherwise won't slow you down much. crossing it you can be at speed so be aware that caltrans has lanes blocked off. and in the meantime in the south bay, everything looks great out of downtown san jose on 280, the guadalupe parkway. 101. there is a warriors game later on tonight over at oracle playing sacramento at 7:30. but for right now, very quiet all the way up towards downtown oakland. we'll have more traffic coming

[ laughter ] we have a lot of cloud cover in the bay area even drizzle at the coast. the cloud deck is low enough that we may see delays at sfo arrivals this morning. temperatures this morning mild, clouds keeping the numbers up 40s and 50s at this hour. looks like we have a weak system sliding to the south of us kind of in the dry slot right now. we have more clouds off the coastline as another cold front makes its way towards the bay area but today clouds pull back to the coast, a little sunshine toward the afternoon. temperatures going to be cooler. plan on highs in the 50s and 60s. we'll talk about the possibility of some raindrops coming our way in just a few minutes. back to you. >> thank you. it is 4:39 now.

a richmond police officer facing some criticism for a comment he made about computer hackers. lasts thursday a sergeant wrote a letter to the president of the ultimate fighting championship about an attack on the organization's website. he said get those hacking [bleeps], i'm a cop in the bay area. i will go at them with both guns. the hacker group "anonymous"

and its supporters describe it as a criminal threat. police say since the posting they have received a flood of complaints. a police captain says the department has opened an investigation. california senior senator is now tweeting. democrat dianne feinstein sent her first tweet on sunday. this was an update on a new courthouse in los angeles. the first tweet from feinstein came less than a week after a republican challenger criticized her for being disconnected with the public. a feinstein consultant says the senator had actually wanted to tweet for some time now. the menlo park city council will hold a special meeting this evening because of concerns about facebook's plans to expand its new headquarters in the. many. concerns come from neighboring east palo alto where people fear more traffic congestion as well as higher rents. among the issues to be discussed a limit to the number of employees at facebook's east campus on willow road and potential of building out the campus on bay front expressway.

over in mountain view google is about a month away from launching a new system to profile users. the internet giant says more detailed profiles will help it give users more relevant search results and, of course, advertising that better pertains to their lives. >> everything you do now in all these different services is collected in one big database. they know now a lot more about what you're doing. the more money they can charge for advertising. >> changes to google's set having set to begin march 1 and users will not be able to opt out. new smartphone app will have you breathing easier. the epa is helping people determine their city's air quality. the free air now app for apple or androids lets users further in the zip code and get pollutants and ozone levels back. they from good to hazardous. people are heart or lung conditions, children and older adults are most at risk when a

a senior administrator at claremont mckenna college has resigned after admitting to falsifying s-a-t scores. welcome back. a senior administrator at claremont community college resigned after admitting to falsifying s.a.t. scores. the college president told students and staff about the falsified scores in an email yesterday. the administrator who quit has admitted inflating the scores

of incoming students since 2005. reading and math scores were inflated by 10 to 20 points each. education advocates hope to raise the standards at california community colleges. a task force from the chancellor's office has outlined 22 recommendations to improve schools. the main goal is to increase the number of students who finish their programs. as of right now, thousands of students cannot get the classes that they need because of overcrowding. >> if i i don't get into that class i'm not going to get my pell grant which means i'll have to pay for everything myself. i'm a single mom working a part- time job. i can't afford it. >> state lawmakers will discuss it this week and it could be implemented this fall. pg&e has unveiled new technology that could prevent future pipeline disasters. the car-mound device will try to identify pipeline leaks by detecting natural gas in the ads. santa clara basedpy carrow has already installed the

technology on two cars. they claim the new technology is more accurate and 1,000 times more sensitive than current devices on the market. pg&e is the first company in the world to use the specialized gear. and we're now hearing 911 calls reporting that massive freeway pile-up in florida. you can actually hear a crash happen during the call. here it is. >> oh, my god! [ crash ] oh, [ bleep ]! oh, my god, what is going on! >> okay, we are getting help out there, okay? >> oh, my goodness. >> how many vehicles have been involved that you have seen so far? >> we cannot see, ma'am. we cannot see. this is the third one now already. >> almost a mile of just carnage and cars here. survivors say visibility was so poor early sunday morning all was of heavy fog and smoke from a nearby brush fire. that stretch interstate 75 earlier had been closed for the same reason. 10 people were killed in the crash involving at least a

dozen cars. six tractor-trailers and a motorhome. in southern california, a wild high-speed chase is caught on tape. last night police began pursuing the car because it appeared to have only one person in a carpool lane. believe it or not. give me a break. speeds hit up to 90 miles per hour. there were several near collisions. the driver within the through red lights, alleys, nearly colliding with other vehicles and going the wrong way a number of times. two suspects took off on foot but were arrested a short time later. turned out the car had tinted windows. a car that used to belong to president obama is for sale on ebay for a million dollars. it's a chrysler 300c with a v-8 engine. mr. obama leased the gas guzzler when he was a senator from illinois. but when he ran for president he dumped it for a ford escape hybrid. a little smarter, right? a restaurant manager bought it then for under $20,000. he says that million-dollar price tag no joke. >> who would buy that car for a million dollars? >> somebody. >> for history? >> somebody out there, yeah.

hold on to it. i think we're ready for traffic. >> we are, elizabeth. >> shall we? >> all right. south bay quiet on the roads now. of course, not quite 5:00. that may be some of the reason why. so here's a live look at traffic coming out of downtown san jose. not too bad towards cupertino. 880 the nimitz a little busier. you can see easily see those headlines going southbound. southbound looks okay towards oakland airport. northbound quiet towards downtown oakland. a lot of overnight roadwork has been picked up including on the did you remember dumbarton. that's all wrapped up. san mateo bridge never had any roadwork to talk about. 13 minutes in either direction between hayward and foster city. so san mateo bridge most of your bridges look good right now. there may still be some lingering roadwork on the bay

bridge. you will notice left lanes blocked as you make your way past the pay gates where all the lanes merge right there before the incline so various lanes blocked scheduled until 6:00 this morning. and you may find the same thing on the lower deck. that's traffic. lawrence is searching for raindrops. >> i have been searching all winter. i haven't been able to find many. drizzle at the coast. clouds everywhere. really low enough this morning that we're seeing it at 800 feet. that may cause problems for flights coming into sfo. still by the afternoon partial clearing and temperatures 50s and low 60s outside so numbers down just a bit. so we'll keep it cool. we have a flat ridge sitting in across the bay area that will keep the temperatures down. here's your next weathermaker off the coastline. looks impressive here. by the time it gets here, not much energy with it but there's a chance we could see a few showers mainly north of the

golden gate bridge that moves by. the rest of it just some passing clouds. computer models picking up on the low clouds this morning and watch as we take you through the day as it begins to break up. then next cold front begins to approach the bay area. and as it does, light showers north of the golden gate bridge. .03" of rain in the santa rosa area. so not much. and then that sweeps on by. so with that in mind, not a whole lot coming our way. 50s and 60s for highs today. as you get to the east bay, the low clouds begin to break up and looking at 50s and low 60s. inside the bay those temperatures running mainly into the 50s. some 60s in parts of the north bay. and looking out over the next couple of days, we have had to put a couple of raindrops in there on wednesday. come thursday, heading in the other direction, the low moves out and offshore winds blow in the bay area and temperatures will be near 70 and warmer spots on thursday temperatures probably above normal in through the super weekend ahead. >> super weekend. >> that's right.
