violence since 1996. on wednesday, at least 74 people were killed and hundreds more hurt when fans rioted on the field and in the stands of a soccer stadium along egypt's mediterranean coast. this morning, many in egypt are pointing fingers at the country's military leadership. the violence started in the moments after an upset victory by the home team. fans stormed the field after they defeated egypt's top team. supporters at a home team threw rocks, bottles and fireworks. some chased rival fans and players from the field. police officers stationed at the stadium are being criticized for failing to control the crowd. this man's brother was a victim. he says the central security forces were watching everything but nobody moved a muscle. the riot was one of the worst outbreaks of violence in egypt since last year's anti-government protest that swept president hosni mubarak

from power. the head of egypt's military council told reporters the incident would not affect egypt and it security. but hundreds of people gathered at cairo's train station to greet some of those injured in the riot and to chant anti-government slogans. members of egypt's newly elected parliament are denouncing the military council. leaders from the muslim brotherhood claim the military allowed the riot to get out of hand in order to justify its police power. nato defense ministers meet in brussels this morning and the withdrawal of combat troops from afghanistan is expected to top the agenda. yesterday the defense secretary leon panetta said the u.s. role may end a year earlier than expected. speaking on his plane headed to europe, panetta said hopefully by mid to the latter part of 2013, we'll be tiebl make a transition from a combat role to a train, advice and assist roll. all nato members were supposed to keep their forces in

afghanistan until 2014. the war in afghanistan has dragged on for more than a decade. efforts to suppress the taliban have cost over 1700 u.s. lives. and according to a u.s. military repor, the taliban is far from done. david martin has that part of the story. >> reporter: the report classified secret entitled state of the taliban, 2012, makes for discouraging reading to anyone who thinks the taliban is a spent force. based on interviews with taliban and al qaeda prisoners, it states that though the taliban suffered severely in 2011, its strength, motivation funding and tactical proficiency remain intact. prisoners are not the most reliable sources. but the sheer weight of numbers, 27,000 interrogations of more than 4,000 prisoners held at parwan prison in afghanistan gives the report of ring of truth. the prisoners acknowledge they have lost ground in the south of

afghanistan and are no match for american troops. but u.s. force levels are going down from a high of 100,000 to the current 89,000 to 68,000 by september. the prisoners say they are encouraged to fight on by america's supposed ally, pakistan and its intelligence service known as isi. as the report puts it, isi officers tout the need for continued jihad and expulsion of foreign invaders from afghanistan. isi is aware of the activity and the whereabouts of senior taliban personnel. senior taliban leaders meet regularly with isi personnel who advise on strategy. a captured al qaeda commander put it more bluntly. pakistan knows everything, they control everything. i can't go to the bathroom without them watching. if there's any encouraging news in this document, it's that the taliban believes al qaeda is

indeed a spent force and doesn't work with them much anymore. david martin, cbs news, the pentagon. rescue efforts are under way in the south pacific where a ferry sank off the coast of new guinea. the ferry was traveling from new britain to the mainland in rough weather when it capsized. there were 350 people on board. more than 230 have been rescued. now to politic. mitt romney is in hot water over comments he made about poor people in this kun kri. and newt gingrich is expected to get a big name endorsement today. tara mergener has details on that. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning, betty. donald trump is expected to give gingrich the nod today which will bring a blitz of a media attention just in time for saturday's contest. >> it was an honor to have donald up here. >> they could be teaming up on the campaign trail. sources tell cbs news the billionaire businessman is expected to endorse the former

one step closer to legalizing same sex marriage. last night, the state senate narrowly approved a bill making washington the seventh state to allow same sex couples to we had. the house is expected to pass the bill and the governor is expected to sign it into law. once the bill becomes law, opponents say they will challenge it by calling for a referendum. planned parenthood says it received more than $400,000 in donations stins found out that it's losing funding from the susan g. komen foundation. its decision was not political, it says. komen donated $700,000 to planned parenthood last year, money used for breast screenings. planned parenthood said komen cut it off because of pressure from anti-abortion rights groups. shedding light on the dark side of the moon. plus, a california woman drives off with a big legal victory in her lawsuit against honda. this is the "cbs morning news." automaker honda. this is the "cbs morning news."

from china. the nikkei finished higher and hong kong's hang seng rose nearby 2%. wall street started out on a strong note in february. the dow added 83 points and the nasdaq gained 34. american airlines is looking to eliminate 13,000 jobs. it would impact flight attendants, maintenance workers and pilots. they're trying to emerge from bankruptcy by slashing labor costs by 20 percent. they're going to stop paying for retiree health benefit. indiana is now the 23rd state with the right to work law. governor mitch daniels signed the legislation yesterday to the did is may of union employees. the law prohibits unions from collecting mandatory fees from workers. supporters say it will help create more jobs. and a california woman took on honda in court and won. and now she's trying to get others do the same and ditch a

class action suit against the car maker. the woman sued honda in small claims court saying she was misled about the fuel economy of her hybrid car. a judge awarded her nearly $10,000. that's much more than she would have gotten in a proposed class action settlement. in the 200,000 other people covered by the proposed settlement choose to do the same, honda could be on the hook for as much as $2 billion. there's a big difference there. >> eye whole lot of gas mone. thank you, ashley. david letterman celebrates 30 years of late night laughs. and in sports, the biggest win of the season so far for the hard charging 76ers.

singer aretha franklin called him an american treasure. don cornelius. the creator of tv's soul train died yesterday at his los angeles home from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. bill whitaker has more on the man behind the groundbreaking music show. >> i'm don cornelius. as always in parting, we wish you love, peace and soul. >> call it soul. rhythm and blues or urban. don cornelius was the man who exposed black music, fashion and dance not only to an african-american audience but to all of america's teenagers on tv.
