mallicoat. your realtime captioner is linda marie macdonald. and good morning, everybody. it's friday, it's february the 3rd. it's super bowl weekend, it's friday. need i say more? >> that says it all. >> i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm grace lee. we begin with a serious accident on the bay bridge. elizabeth has details. >> they have issued a traffic alert. here's the reason why. you can see the big backups already up the incline. they have three of the left lanes blocked off. chp did that around 3:50 and lanes are still closed. it was a multi-vehicle crash and overturn accident. there was a stall on the incline and another car came up

to the stall and crashed into it. they have called for tow crews in the last 10 minutes. they hope to clear it in the next 20 minutes so before 5:00. you can tell this is on the incline just past that area where they have been doing construction near the metering lights so there was some confusion for drivers there. there's been a lot of lane merging past the pay gates and metering lights across the area. once again the traffic alert traffic alert on the upper deck of the bay bridge. san mateo bridge is fine, if you are looking for an alternate. muni metro trains are on schedule this morning. service though was stopped for much of the day yesterday on the k, l and m met though lines between van ness and west portal but was fixed a few

hours ago. a train somehow pulled down the overhead electric line near the church street stakes and then a semi truck took down other lines in the area. it was a messy commute even with a bus bridge. another court appearance this morning for san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi. this time, he will be in family court to get permission to see his 2-year-old son. the judge in mirkarimi's domestic violence case has issued a stay-away order until the trial is over but did say family court was the place to challenge the order. tonight police in walnut creek plan to beef up patrols in downtown bars after a number of late night fights there. nine people were arrested last weekend in fights outside bars on locust street. there's been an increase in bar brawls and the degree of violence has been escalating. the police chief says one convenient that bars have been serving people who are already

drunk. surveillance video capturing images of a shootout at a taco truck in east oakland at a parking lot early yesterday morning at foothill boulevard. you see it here on fruitvale avenue. omar casillas was sweeping the parking lot when he was confronted by three robbers. he was shot in the back while trying to get away but he did manage to make it back to the truck, get his own gun and fire back. >> an exchange of gunfire, man, sounded like, you know, like somebody had just their tv on playing videogames. >> that witness says he saw another robbery attempt on casillas a few weeks ago and casillas managed to pounce on the suspect's back and hold him until the police arrived. yesterday morning's shooting, casillas and one of the suspects are being treated for wounds not considered life- threatening. two other suspects are also in police custody. this morning, more "occupy" demonstrators will head to

court after last weekend's melee. the first group faced a judge yesterday. one protestor pleaded not guilty to swinging his bicycle at two police officers hitting one in the face the other in the hand. another pleaded not guilty to throwing rocks, bottles and a two-by-four at some of the cops. the judge ordered them both to stay 100 yards away from the kaiser convention center and frank ogawa plaza. >> it's designed to keep him from participating in "occupy oakland," obviously. and that's something he has a right to do, something all citizens have a right to do. "occupy" demonstrators plan to hold another rally monday. a former drug agent in the east bay is now heading to l.a. to appear on the dr. phil show. norman wielsch was granted permission to travel to southern california this weekend. he was the former commander of a contra costa county drug squad. but he is now facing a list of

drug and corruption charges. his attorney says wielsch will reach out to other law enforcement officers who may be under stress and encourage them to seek help. donations are pouring into planned parenthood and the susan g. komen foundation is getting threats. this backlash comes after the komen foundation stopped giving grants to planned parenthood to pay for breast cancer screening. planned parenthood says that the komen grants have paid for 170,000 breast exams in the past five years. komen says that it is stopping the grants partly because congress is investigating planned parenthood. >> this decision a unfortunate as it is was a bullying campaign against the komen foundation. >> this will affect any number of long-standing partners but we have always done what is right for our organization. >> some businesses are calling for a boycott of the komen race forth cure.

and alameda firefighters plan to donate firefighters to the breast cancer fund instead of to the komen foundation. one of those also donating to planned parenthood this week, new york mayor michael bloomberg pledging $250,000 to match future donations. a family foundation from texas also putting in $250,000. and since the komen announcement about 6,000 other donors have contributed $400,000 to planned parenthood. a big-time snowstorm is threatening to pelt parts of colorado threatening to cancel classes for the day. there could be up to two feet of snow. grocery stores say customers have been stocking up on food and they are starting to run out of items like milk and bread. so many snow plows will be in use in denver some public works employees with desk jobs are being recruited to start driving them. >> so we have 126 pieces of equipment that will be hitting all the side streets in denver. >> one of the biggest storms ever if they get two feet. about 150 flights in and out of

denver's international airport have already been cancelled and by the way those cancellations do include flights out of san jose, san francisco and oakland so check with your carrier if you plan to fly towards the rockies today. >> if you plan to ski, great time to go. >> if you can get there. >> they can bring some of that to the sierra, lawrence, we would be in business. >> i got a friend who drives a delivery truck back there. every time that happens he can't wait to come to california, wondering yes moved out there. out the door we are seeing patchy fog and temperatures a little chilly in spots. 34 in fairfield, 34 in santa rosa, 39 in fremont, 52 and warmer in oakland. we are seeing offshore winds around the bay area so it looks like high pressure will hold on for another day bringing with it plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures by the afternoon. just that patchy fog is going to break up early on but we're going to likely see a hugh phi clouds move across our skies.

release jobs numbers for january. llen this morning the labor department will release job numbers for january. the unemployment rate has fallen for four straight months but economists are predict the rate for january will be unchanged at 8.5%. the government said yesterday that new claims for jobless benefits dropped by 12,000 in january to about 360,000. today president obama will

propose a program to create more jobs for veterans. it's geared specifically toward veterans who have served in the past decade. unemployment for that group is 5% higher than the national average. the veterans job corps would spend $1 billion to put 20,000 veterans to work rebuilding roads, levees and trails. it does require approval from congress. 4:41 now. politics. the race for the white house is now focused on the west as nevada holds its republican caucuses tomorrow. and as tara mergener reports, front-runner mitt romney is now touting a new endorsement that came as a big surprise to many. reporter: at a packed rally in reno, mitt romney called on voters to help keep his momentum going. >> it would be helpful if nevada would do the same thing florida did. get out there and caucus! >> reporter: the former massachusetts governor heads into tomorrow's caucuses with a solid double-digit lead and the backing of donald trump. >> he as smart. he's sharp.

he's not going to allow bad things to continue to happen. >> reporter: romney seemed almost surprised as he accepted the real estate mogul's endorsement thursday. >> there are some things that you just can't imagine happening in your life. this is one of them. >> reporter: earlier, newt gingrich's campaign has suggested the former house speaker would be the one getting trump's support. a majority of republicans polled last month said trump's endorsement would have no impact on their decision. instead, most voters are concerned about the struggling economy. gingrich tried to tap into those worries at a manufacturing plant thursday. >> i really believe that we should care about the very poor unlike governor romney. >> reporter: he again brought up comments the front-runner made earlier this week. romney said wasn't concerned about the very poor because they have a safety net. >> what the poor need is a trampoline so they can spring up and quit being poor so i'm for replacing the safety net with a trampoline.

>> reporter: gingrich is hoping to bounce back himself tomorrow with a win in nevada. tara mergener for cbs news, washington. and here's somebody else that wants to be president. roseann barr best known for her embarrassing rendition of the national anthem with a sitcom, too, she has submitted paperwork to run for the green party's nomination. she says it's not a joke claiming long-time support for the green party. she says democrats and republicans have not been working for the best interests of the american people. >> never a dull moment in this race. america's cup may be hitting patchy waters. only three challengers have signed up for next year's event. five other teams have expressed interest but haven't signed up yet. america's cup spokesman says she is not worried because entry fees aren't due until june. the regatta director told new zealand media that the race format might have to be scaled back to accommodate fewer teams. you may have seen something different on the golden gate bridge. digital sensors center been

added to let cyclists know how fast they're going. the west sidewalk is temporarily closed. the bridge district said the new equipment is not part of a plan to introduce a speed limit of any kind on the sidewalk. $200 million for the national football league. the san francisco 49ers are getting that money in a loan for the league to help it build -- from the league to help it build a new santa clara stadium. crews have already started working at the team's headquarters getting ready for construction to begin. >> we'll start site work very soon. we are doing everything right now. we're aiming for 15 but we're hopping if things go well you can have a 2014 opening. >> there have been talks that the league would require the 9ers to share the stadium with the raiders but that was not part of this loan arrangement. giants fanfest tomorrow at at&t park when you can get autographs from the players. >> you can rub elbows as team officials promise better crowd control. they were the world series

the house is expected to take up a measure next week that would and their new this morning the house is expected to take up a measure next week that would formally ban lawmakers and their staff from insider trading. senate members passed the so- called stock act on thursday with a 96-3 vote. the bill gained momentum following a report on cbs'60 minutes this past weekend. the obama administration is considering the controversial release of senior taliban officials from guantanamo bay to explore peace talks with the taliban. names of those being considered for release are undisclosed. the feds say the idea is very preliminary and depends on the taliban renouncing terrorism and agreeing to peace talks. in the meantime defense secretary leon panetta believes it is likely that israel will attack iran sometime this spring. the "washington post" and cnn quote sources saying that panetta believes the attack will happen in april, may or

june. israel wants to destroy iran's suspected nuclear weapons program, although iran has made it clear any attack will set off a firestorm of retaliation and any new middle east chaos would almost certainly drive up gas prices here quite a bit. 4:49 now. a firefighter responding to an emergency in vacaville came across his own stolen belongings. louie jones arrived to help a man who was having a medical emergency and that's when jones spotted his own stuff that had been stolen a week earlier. jones and his colleagues took the man to the hospital and then called the police. >> later on after the police went back and did some further investigation, they found my washer and dryer in the residence and they found my lawnmower. >> wow. police arrested the suspect at the hospital. he is the brother of the man who needed the firefighter's help. other family members say they had no idea there was thousands of dollars of stolen property inside that home. some nuggets of california

history have been stolen from a courthouse all at the same place. the gold nuggets were mined by some of the first settlers in california and oregon. the artifacts from the gold rush era have been on display at the siskiyou county courthouse in yreka. two thieves smashed a glass case to get them. the silent alarm failed. the collection is valued at $3 million. >> wow. all right. >> that's a lot. we had some problems on the bay bridge but elizabeth has an update. >> things are moving better but we were following this developing story on the upper deck of the bay bridge. for a while we were getting a good sized backup but if you look at this camera it looks better than a half hour ago because they have reopened all lanes. this was a multi-vehicle rollover crash on the incline just past the construction area where they have been working near the metering lights. a car stalled around4 a.m. and another driver hit it.

for a while for almost an hour three lanes of the upper deck closed down, the far three left lanes but as you can see from this live time safer traffic camera showing you the incline that everything is pretty much back up to speed now. i don't think we should have any real lingering effects with this because it is so early. and again they never turned on the metering lights so looks like things are pretty much back to normal now crossing the bay bridge into san francisco from the east bay. all right. elsewhere the san mateo bridge no longer any need for an alternate. this is the commute direction westbound 92. so far looks good coming off the high-rise eastbound 92 traffic looking okay all the way towards the east bay. there is a little bit of roadwork going on. it may still be on the golden gate bridge. they have not done the lane change yet but you can see traffic is light. you're moving fine in either direction this morning. and to the south bay we go getting a south bay check out of downtown san jose it is all green this morning on two two the guadalupe parkway. i promise you there should be -- there is a headlight so obviously things are up to

speed towards cupertino. and mass transit continues to run on time for bart, ace, muni and caltrain and your ferries. remember kcbs once you do hit the roads. they're our radio partners. and you can find them at 740-am and 106.9-fm. that's traffic. for an update on your weather forecast, we're hoping for a beautiful weekend. >> what a gorgeous afternoon yesterday. a lot of temperatures in the 60s and low 70s. today maybe a little cooler, still nice. couple of patches of fog at the coast right now and some of that in the valleys but not a lot inside the bay of temperatures in the 30s and 40s this afternoon. sunshine and mild temperatures this afternoon. those temperatures soaring inland well into the 60s. high pressure in control. couple of systems off the coastline eventually breaking down this ridge and opening the door for some rain to come back to the bay area the beginning of next week but for the weekend we're looking good. sunshine into the central valley. 61 degrees in sacramento. 62 in fresno. high country 40s and 50s. 63 in monterey bay and

temperatures running up into the 60s in the south bay. 66 in san jose. 65 in mountain view. and about 62, some sunshine, into half moon bay. as you make your way to the east bay those temperatures also popping up into the 60s by the afternoon. and the north bay again those down slope winds could crank those numbers up to santa rosa about 67 degrees. beautiful sunshine. very mild and above normal for this time of the year. next couple of days including the weekend looking good just a few more clouds floating across our skies, temperatures staying very mild throughout the weekend but those clouds thicken up on monday and by monday night into tuesday a better chance of rain returning to the bay area and then looks like we'll dry out on wednesday and thursday but right now the weekend looks fantastic. get out and enjoy. >> look good. thanks, lawrence. i don't know if i'm ready to switch yet but decaf coffee may prevent memory loss in type 2 diabetes patients. medical researchers found it improved the brain's ability to metabolize sugar in diabetic mice. type 2 diabetes patients have an increased risk for

degenerative brain disorders. researchers hope to study the effect of it on humans. if you receive more than you give on facebook apparently you're not alone. a new study finds the average facebook users gets more messages and more likes and more comments, yes, than they send. the study from the pugh net and american life project checked facebook activity for the month of november back in 2010 finding a relatively small number of users do more than their share of messaging and the rest of us are voyeurs, i guess. you heard about facebook's big ipo coming up and it's going to make a lot of people here in the bay area very rich including one graffiti artist. so 7 years ago david choe painted murals at facebook's first office in palo alto. there he is. he turned down thousands of dollars in cash. instead, he was paid in stock. actually saw this movie. when facebook goes public the "new york times" reports that choe will be worth about $200 million. it's not the first time we heard of a deal like this.
