s.liance, but tonight that relationship is on shaky ground following egypt's decision to try 19 americans on unspecified charges. the americans, including the son of cabinet secretary ray lahood, are barred from leaving egypt. senior white house correspondent norah o'donnell is tracking developments tonight in isshington. norah, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, jeff. and the obama administration says tonight that they are seply concerned about these eeplrts and urging the egyptian government to change course or risk more than a billion dollars in american aid. as protests in cairo continued for the fourth straight day, an egyptian judge announced his intent to prosecute 43 workers from nongovernmental organizations, including 19 americans. the charges are still unclear, but it's part of a government investigation into international tio-democracy and human-rights groups blaming them for the unrest plaguing egypt nearly a

year after president hosni mubarak was ousted. over the past few months, the egyptian government has been cracking down on n.g.o.s. in december egyptian security forces carried out 17 raids, brandishing guns, taking files and confiscating cash. among those hit was the international republican institute, where sam lahood, son of transportation secretary ray lahood, is an employee. >> are you concerned about your urture safety? >> reporter: reached today by phone, sam lahood declined to comment, but he and at least four of his colleagues have been eanned from leaving the country. charles dunne is the middle east director at freedom house, a pro-democracy group whose employees have also been targeted. >> i mean this is a thin veneer of a legal investigation over what is really a political smear campaign. can'torter: he says if civil organizations like his can't operate freely, it calls into question the future of

democracy in egypt. >> i'm very worried about the future of the country when they are shutting down egyptian and american n.g.o.s that are involved, after all, in trying to dot very things that the military says it wants to do. >> this is a totally judicial issue. >> reporter: today egypt's foreign minister tried to distance his government from the investigation, saying it was the judicial authority and not military leaders who pursued the case. steven cook with the council on foreign relations says despite claims to the contrary, the charges have a political motivation. >> clearly, the military authorities and civilian leaders in egypt are not telling the truth when they say they want to lay the groundwork for democracy. >> reporter: now this crackdown on americans really have some far reaching consequences. secretary of state hillary clinton has personally warned egyptian officials that this investigation could jeopardize $1.5 dollars in american aid just this year. >> glor: norah, thank you. turning now to another middle

east flashpoint. president obama was asked today about the mounting speculation that israel is planning to attack iran's nuclear facilities within the next few months. >> i don't think that israel has made a decision on what they need to do. i think they like us believe that iran has to stand down on its nuclear weapons program. >> jeff: for its part, iran warned its neighbors today it would retaliate against any country that aided an attack on iran's nuclear program. there were more deaths in syria today after the u.n. security council yesterday rejected a resolution condemning pesident bashar assad. assad was at a damascus mosque as human rights observers reported that at least 19 civilians were killed in continued fighting. opposition forces now say only force will oust assad. in bulgaria secretary of state hillary clinton called the failed u.n. resolution a travesty. in campaign 2012 mitt romney finished well ahead of newt gingrich in the nevada caucuses

vath ron paul and rick santorum behind them. the gop race now moves this week to colorado, minnesota, missouri and maine. jan crawford and chip reid are following the two top candidates and we begin with jan in denver. jan, good evening. >> well, good evening, jeff, after that landslide victory last night, romney has won three out of the first five states for voting. and with his momentum and that campaign organization, it's going to be hard for anyone to hard fim now. surrounded by thousands of supporters, romney sounded like su he already was in a head-to-head matchup with president obama. >> this president's misguided policies made these tough times last longer. if i'm elected president, my priority will be worrying about savingb, not saving my own. >> reporter: he won big in nearly every category of voters, atd edged rival newt gingrich with groups the former speaker groed to win, the very conservative, evangelicals and tea party supporters.

thd look at this statistic, among voters who said beating president obama was the most important factor in their decision, romney won 70% of the voted. .hat widespread support even had romney's wife ann looking ahead. ed now that we have all of you excited and energized and volunteering, we're going need you again next november. >> reporter: but despite that decisive win, this race is far from over. ron paul and rick santorum have been out campaigning hard here in colorado. and and the other states that are coming up next. and then there is gingrich. he's vowing to stay in this shing until the bitter end. d.w with the gingrich campaign here's my colleague chip reid in mvada. nevada. >> reporter: jan, last night here in las vegas newt gingrich did not concede his loss to mitt romney. instead he came out swinging, rejecting calls from a growing chorus of republicans who want him to stop the attacks on romney forth good of the party. >> if you can't tell the truth as a candidate for

president, how can the country possibly expect you to lead as president. >> reporter: a defiant newt gingrich said he will campaign all the way to the republican convention in august. and despite his insistence that he's ashamed of the negativity of the campaign, he told reporters his negative attacks on romney will continue. >> i stayed relentlessly positive in iowa and i lost 22 points. >> reporter: on face the nation today gingrich said he's mapped out a plan to stay even with romney at least through april. >> my goal is with governor perry's help and others, to have basically be about tied in delegates around the time we come out of texas. >> reporter: gingrich was asked about reports that his close friend sheldon adelson whose family has given $11 million to a superpac that supports him, is now having back channel talks with romney supporters about giving millions to his superpac. gingrich tried to put that bad news in a good light. >> he and i-- i said myself, the choice is obama and romney, then there is no choice. i think that's how sheldon

adelson feels. >> reporter: but for now, jeff, gingrich plans to continue his assault on romney arguing that he say moderate who is barely distinguishable from the president. >> jeff: all right, chip reid, chip, thank you. joining us now from washington sour political director john dickerson. john, good evening to you. let me ask, if things keep going the way they are for newt gingrich how long does he stay in this race. >> he has a lot of challenges. there is a money and a message challenge. he needs enough money to compete on supertuesday in early march when there are some southern states where he thinks he has a better chance. he also has to find a way to get news coverage. there is not a debate for almost three weeks. during that dark period he has to withstand pressure from those that say he should just drop his campaign for the good of the party. his former colleague dick armey who is an influential tea party voice said gingrich has turned a second rate campaign into a first rate vendetta. >> jeff: that said, john, even with gingrich's struggles how does the romney campaign calibrate how much attention they leave on newt gingrich

versus focusing on the president? >> in mitt romney's remarks after his victory in nevada he focused almost entirely on president obama but he learned in the primary that he cannot ignore his opponent. so the campaign is still attack gingrich. the remaining task within his party for romney is convincing conservatives they should fallee raleigh behind him that issue will be center stage at the conservative action conference this coming friday. ronald reagan made a historic speech to this group as a presidential candidate arguing conservatives should back one of their own and not a pail imitation. newt gingrich and rick santorum will be making its same argument about mitt romney. >> jeff: john dickerson, thank you very much. this campaign is being fueled in part by a new source of fund-raising. superpacs, committees that can spend whatever their donors want, even though they are technically not supposed to coordinate strategy with the candidates. this past week the sec gave us our first look at superpac donors. billionaires included.

>> reporter: 16 billionaires on the forbes 400, the magazine's list of the richest americans have given to superpacs. 12 gave to the pro romney group restore our future. that includes hotel moguls, bill and richard marriott and wal-mart heirs jim and alice wallton. total, 10 million from donors who gave a million dollars each. one of them is florida energy company president william koch, another is frank vanderslo the united states. mr. obama get a different job. >> reporter: vanderabsolute is also a romney campaign finance co-chairman that illustrates the very close relationship between campaigns and superpacs. according to bill allison of the sunlight foundation. >> really does seem to be blurring the distintions that don't forget llionaire hars

and his company donated $8.5 million tothrough superpac, half a million to the pro gingrich superpac winning our future. simmons donations are second only to those from billionaire casino owner sheldon adelson. add e8son and his family gave $11 million to the pro gingrich group. >> there is about, you know, 22 donors who have given the vast majority of the money. man's game. >> reporter: movie director steven spielberg is the only forbes 400 billionaire to give to the superpac so support shall did -- supporting president obama. he gave $100 thouchlt but his fellow hollywood mogul jeffrey katzenberg gave 2 million. >> important to note that sun life foundation bill allison said he expects the pace to president obama's superpac to pick up as the november general election draws nearer. unlike the republicans, mr. obama has not had to face a primary opponent. later queen elizabeth ii marking 60 years on the

she said she wouldn't walk any more. >> today she is not only walking, she's helping run the country's first organized rehabilitation program. >> everyone is encouraging him that he can walk just like shelove without crutches and be a person again. >> reporter: and showing other disabled haitians how to get back on their feet. >> there a common perception that disability is something that's permanent, you become disabled and once are you disability, you become less of a person. >> reporter: dr. koji nakashima is with partners in health, one of the largest nongovernment health-care providers in haiti. he says after the earthquake, there was no program to help victims cope with long term injury. >> he hand out prosthetics, what happens in a year, two years. >> reporter: so now he and a team of therapists and technicians go door-to-door providing patients with followup care.

1300 scheduled flights today because of snow. nine days now of bitter temperatures across europe are blamed for more than 200 deaths. the snow is also piling up in colorado and that increases the risk of avalanches. john blackstone tonight reports one snowboarder stuck in a dramatic snow slide is thank a safety device for saving her life. >> reporter: what began as an exhilarating ride down a colorado back country slope suddenly turned to horror for professional snowboarder meesh hytner. of me ripple. it was really unsettling to see the ground ripple. it was just like, like the earth was breathing. there is nothing you can do in that situation. once an avalanche has you, you're not going anywhere. >> reporter: what saved her was an avalanche escape device, an air bag worn in a backpack. when she pulled the chord it kept her on top of the snow as it cascade down the mountain. at $800 the air bags are something few snowboarders
