of the north bay. we'll have a live report with the latest coming up. an obsession and ambush, and a creepy hiding place. how court records tied them to the shooting of a bay area federal agent. cold front headed toward the bay area. clouds on the way maybe a few showers, too. how might that affect your weekend? we'll have details coming up. and so far, it is "friday light" this morning at the bay bridge toll plaza. but we do have roadwork where it could slow you down, in traffic in minutes. thank you. good morning, everybody. it is friday. it's the end of the workweek. it's february 10. good to have you with us. i'm frank mallicoat. >> good that it's friday. >> friday is always a good thing. >> i'm grace lee. it is 4:30. we have a busy morning because we begin with breaking news out of the north bay. >> a fire at a lumberyard this morning. anne makovec is at the scene in san rafael with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. the fire is out. firefighters were able to knock

to down very quickly. it happened outside of the building here behind me on rafael lumber on anderson. you can see firefighters still on scene after the fire broke out around 2:45 starting near an out building damaging the out building as well as outside storage racks. i'm here with san rafael fire chief chris gray with a little more information. now, you guys got the call after people reported seeing smoke and fire from the highway. >> that's correct. it was about 2:45 a.m. >> reporter: what were your challenges in fighting this fire? we understand you were able to keep it from the main building. >> that's correct. firefighters made an aggressive attack here. it was a second alarm fire. we had 35 firefighters on scene. anytime you receive a call at a lumberyard, you're concerned for a potentially big fire. firefighters again arrived here, they had 40 to 50-foot flame lengths above the building. and obviously some concerns to get a large amount of water on

it quickly. they made an aggressive attack. >> reporter: what are you doing now? i know investigators are out back but you still have a lot of your team in the building. >> that's correct. they are assessing to just make sure that there is no extension of the fire under the interior of the building. fortunately, the building contained an automatic fire sprinkler system that aid the fires and prevented that fire from moving into the main quarters of the building where the majority of the materials are stored. so they're working to make sure that they can salvage any materials that may have been damaged by any smoke or water that's adjacent to the building where the fire occurred. >> reporter: chief chris gray with the san rafael fire department, thanks for that. again, the good news is that the fire is out. but chief thinks that the investigators will be here until mid to late morning. back to you guys. >> thank you. san jose police are looking into the death of a stabbing victim who was dropped off at a hospital on the city's south

side. the call came from the kaiser san jose medical center. the man died by the time officers arrived. investigators don't know who brought the man to the hospital or what the motive may have been. this is just the city's fourth homicide of the year. 4:33. oakland goes to court today in an effort to stop prostitution and other crimes linked to two hotels. the city attorney is trying to shut down the national lodge on international boulevard as well as the economy inn on east 12th street. it has tried less stringent measures without success. the national lodge case goes to trial today. the economy inn trial starts next friday. "occupy" tents are back up on the uc-berkeley campus. they are in the same spot in sproul plaza where police removed tents three months ago. you can see some activity even at this early hour. this time campus police have asked "occupiers" to take down the tents but protestors are saying no. they say that they are not violating any rules since no one is inside those tents. "occupy" cal members say that

the university has not addressed their demands about stopping increases in tuition. it is 4:33 now. oakland police are not joking around. they say stay away or you will go to jail. officers arrested joseph briones yesterday. they said he defied an order to stay away from frank ogawa plaza. he was among four people charged with violent felony offenses from an oakland "occupy" protest on january 28. the total of 12 people, a dozen, have been orthod to stay away from that plaza -- have been ordered to stay away in that plaza. the man accused of shooting an off-duty federal agent in newark will be arraigned today. police say 61-year-old dennis bagwell from piedmont had an obsession with the victim's wife. bagwell was her teacher at the bay area optical school in union city last year. and court documents say that the suspect had been seen lurking in the bushes outside the victim's home. the director of the school says he has not seen a problem. >> he has been the salt of the

earth, one. people that would help all our students. >> 61-year-old victim robert supplick is in serious condition of the he was leaving home to go to work tuesday morning when he was shot. joseph naso returns to marin county court this morning scheduled to enter a plea once again. after a two-week preliminary hearing, he was ordered to stand trial for the murders of four women in northern california. the judge is expected to consider whether to let 78-year- old naso continue to act as his own attorney. a billboard inspired by a comment from the san francisco sheriff will go up for two weeks next week. the sign will say "domestic violence is never a private matter." when he was sworn in as sheriff last month ross mirkarimi commented that the domestic violence case against him was a private matter. a bay area hospital says

it's now committed to providing a kidney transplant to an illegal immigrant from oakland. jesus navarro had private insurance to pay for it but when uc medical center officials learned of his immigration status they said they couldn't provide the transplant. the reason, it was unclear whether he could pay for follow- up care and there's a lot with this operation. the hospital released its first public statement on the situation yesterday saying it was a case of miscommunication. 4:36. it is early, but it's friday. >> it is. >> so whatever we have on tap weather-wise i thinkle' be happy with it. >> yesterday it was beautiful. 60s and 70s around the bay area. that's gone. we have clouds rolling in maybe some showers already beginning in parts of the north bay. hi-def doppler showing you some of that now nothing real heavy but you can see some scattered showers as a weak cold front begins to slide in toward the bay area. we'll see more clouds throughout the morning hours today and a chance we could see some light showers. here it is, you can see it moving through most of that energy staying to the north but just holding together enough to

bring clouds later on this morning and throughout the morning hours. and a chance of a few light showers. still, looks like we'll have some decent weather heading into the weekend not a washout at least. we have some 40s and 50s right now. by the afternoon noticeably cooler, 50s at the coast, 60s inside the ba and the valleys. we'll have more on the weekend forecast. that's a look at weather. here's elizabeth with traffic. >> thanks, lawrence. and we just have some roadwork to tell you about this morning. if you are commuting along the peninsula once again that oregon expressway off-ramp is closed to 101 to southbound 101 until about 6:00 this morning. that's according to caltrans. you can see from our live traffic sensors that a lot of stuff is in the green this morning including 101 and 280 both drive times along the peninsula looking great. 880 through oakland light past the coliseum. you will notice that high street on and off-ramp closed until about 5:00 so just another 20 minutes or so. again, that's according to caltrans officials and a quick look at the altamont pass commute.

13 minutes, not too bad, towards the dublin interchange. more traffic coming up. back to you. >> thank you. 4:37. this morning a report that a school district in los angeles gave money to a teacher at the center of a child abuse scandal. the "los angeles times" reports that mark berndt received $40,000 last year it drop a challenge to his dismissal. he was fired and then dropped an appeal. berndt was arrested last week and charged with 23 counts of lewd conduct against children. this week a second teacher was charged with three counts. the two cases run related. the school's entire staff is reassigned to other schools. two explosions today killed 25 people and injured another 175 in syria. it is the first significant violence in the country's largest city during the 11th month uprising. today's explosions targeted

security compounds in the city which so far has mainly supported assad. there are conflicting reports about who may be responsible for today's attacks. in the presidential race, tomorrow it's all about the state of maine as it holds its republican caucuses. ron paul is pinning a lot of hopes on the pine tree state. as susan mcginnis reports the other candidates are spending today in washington at the conservative political action conference. reporter: it's one of the biggest events on the conservative calendar. >> we must outsmart the liberals. we must outsmart the stupid people that are trying to ruin america! >> yeah! >> reporter: this morning, thousands are expected to pack this ballroom in washington, d.c. for day two of the annual cpac conference. conservatives from around the country will hear from three of the four gop contenders including front-runner mitt romney. his ability to rally conservatives came into even more question after rival rick

santorum swept three gop races. in oklahoma thursday santorum kept up his attacks. >> governor romney's campaign has been about serially tearing down opponents without offering any kind of vision for what he wants to do for this country. >> reporter: santorum and newt gingrich will also speak at today's conference. all three candidates are expected to go after president obama and his new birth control policy. >> it has been a lot of talk about the obama administration's attack on the catholic church. >> reporter: the healthcare law requires faith-based organizations to pay for contraception coverage in their insurance plan. the controversy is already a hot topic at the conference. >> the federal government does not have the power to force religious organizations to pay for things that that organization thinks are wrong. >> reporter: the cpac conference wraps up tomorrow when the thousands here will reveal their presidential pick in a straw poll. susan mcginnis, cbs news, washington. 4:40 now. a top lawmaker in hot water. >> the suspicious way he made

fire in san rafael. it started a few hours ago... but rious damage. this is video just into the newsroom of a lumberyard fire in san rafael. you can see just how active that scene was. it started a few hours ago but didn't cause serious damage. anne makovec is on scene. we'll have a live report from her in less than 20 minutes. 4:43. a top lawmaker in our nation's capital under investigation. spencer bacchus the chairman of the house financial services committee. investigators believe he may have violated insider trading laws. the probe opened last year after several suspicious trades on his annual financial

disclosure form showed up. it's the first of its kind involving a congress member. yesterday the house passed a measure to tighten rules against insider trading by lawmakers. a catholic broadcasting network is the latest organization to file a lawsuit against the obama administration over birth control coverage. the ewtn global catholic network opposes the government mandate that religious organizations provide free access to couldn't sentives in their health plans. the broadcaster says the policy would force it to violate church doctrine. we'll get a better snapshot today of the bay area economy. san jose mayor chuck reed will take part in the 2012 state of the valley conference. protestors showed up at civic auditorium last night to give mayor reed a heated reception during his state of the city address. the city's firefighters and police officer unions filed a formal complains accusing the mayor of criminal ethics violations. they claim the mayor inflated the city's projected pension costs to justify laying off

public employees. >> i am saying this mayor reed lied, misled and deceived the public and the members of the san jose city council concerning the true fiscal condition of the pension plans of san jose. >> the mayor says he did nothing wrong and he says he simply present the public with both a high and low end projection which differed by more than $300 million. he calls the complaint a political ploy in an election year. he thanked the unions for agreeing to paycuts. >> i appreciate your hard work and i still hope that we'll be able to reach an agreement on fiscal reforms. >> $650 million in is still a reasonable ballpark estimate of the pessimistic scenario. >> reed says he will stick with a higher projection comparing it to preparing for a big earthquake. troubled homeowners in california can expect help with payments soon. the state is receiving an $18 billion aid package. california signed off on a deal involving 48 states and five

major banks. the lenders will reduce loans by an average of $20,000 for about a million homeowners at risk of foreclosure. homeowners who were improperly foreclosed on will get a $2,000 cash payment. the deal sets new national standards making it easier to refinance and get principal reductions. >> this isn't just about punishing the banks for their irresponsible behavior. it's also about requiring them to help the people they harmed. >> state and federal officials are working to add nine other banks to the deal. despite the settlement, states and the federal government can still go after the banks for wrongdoing. the program officially begins may 1. -- march 1. several mars missions have been put on hold. nasa's proposed budget for fiscal 2013 is to be released on monday. and it will scale back planetary exploration including deep cuts to mars missions including two joint efforts with the european space agency.

court today. a former penn state assistant coach accused of molesting 10 boys is expected in court today. the judge will hear motions from suspect jerry sandusky and the prosecution. sandusky wants his bail conditions eased so he can see his grandchildren as well as having friends over. prosecutors want to further restrict his movements. they say neighbors complained sandusky has been watching nearby schoolchildren from the back porch. a reporter working on the story had an encounter with the suspect's wife while she was working in front of the sandusky home. >> police have gotten several complaints -- [ car drives in ] >> the reporter had to step away as the wife drove up the driveway. mrs. sandusky had called the police to complain about the reporters in front of their house. >> quick action by a school bus driver in north carolina may have saved a group of young

students after she noticed smoke seeping inside wednesday. the drive rushed six elementary school children off her vehicle moments before it burst into flames. >> and the flames were big enough that they were come towards all the trees in our front yard. >> look at that. the driver said the kids were calm as she helped them off one by one. quite a fire. >> no kidding. >> lawrence, what's happening? >> you know what? we have things going on. yesterday lots of sunshine around the bay area temperatures into the 70s. today clouds are rolling back in. we're seeing some showers developing in the north bay. let's take a look at our high- def doppler radar. you can see some of that moisture moving onshore, not really well defined cold front but enough to bring at least some scattered showers heading out so be prepared for that this morning. things unsettled today. more clouds on the way, cooler temperatures and a chance of showers today. but over the weekend it really should be mostly dry. we'll see some occasional clouds outside and then i think a better chance of rain overnight on sunday night and into monday. we have yet another weak cold

front sliding into the bay area most of the energy winding up north of us but we're going to eventually see some clouds later on this morning. as they spread through maybe a couple of light showers outside. computer models picking up on that. not a lot of green just light stuff moving through keeping things a little unsettled overnight but not much so i think throughout the weekend not a bad weekend. it's not going to be a rainout. temperatures will be noticeably cooler. let's plan on mid-60s into san jose, about 60 in san mateo, about 59 in pacifica. as you head to the east bay those temperatures up into the 60s by the afternoon with lots of clouds floating by. and inside the bay we'll see temperatures in the 50s and also the 60s. so much cool the other side, those 70s long gone don't look to return soon. over the weekend cool and breezy. late sunday night and into monday a chance of rain in the bay area and things dry out tuesday and wednesday. what's going on next tuesday, something? >> no. >> nothing? >> nothing going on next tuesday, elizabeth.

[ indiscernible ] >> when does baseball start again? what did frank say? that's right. awww let's go out towards the san mateo bridge where everything looks pretty good this morning across the span. all of our bridges pretty much moving at top speeds. it is definitely "friday light." of course it is 4:53 on a friday morning. that might have something to do with it. but just a few brakes lights coming out of the altamont pass. so your drive time is still only 14 minutes. no major slowing through livermore. the golden gate commute southbound 101 obviously traffic is very light. can't even see a car yet in our camera so they are about to do the lane change here any minute. in the meantime the rest of the south bay looks good up and down 280. guadalupe parkway is fine. and so is 101. there's that live look at 280 traffic out of downtown san jose. pretty much free and clear this morning.
