[ laughter ] >> yeah. no doubt. it is early. >> i'm grace lee. it is 4:30. we're talking about the president today because he spent the night here in san francisco. >> that's right. and this morning, president obama flies out of sfo with lots of campaign cash in his pocket. anne makovec is at the airport where the president departs about 9:00. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. certainly a lucrative trip to san francisco. that's where he is waking up this morning. and when he leaves this morning here from sfo, he is headed to

seattle to hopefully checked more money for his campaign. here's the president arriving yesterday here at sfo early in the afternoon hopefully to raise a few more million dollars after doing the same thing in southern california. he went straight to chinatown and made an unscripted visit there with take-out posing with shocked diners and then went a private home for a fundraiser for $36,000 a plate and then a concert at the masonic center with music and a speech from the 49ers' vernon davis and, of course, comments from the president himself. >> i want to stop rewarding

businesses shipping jobs overseas. i wanna reward companies investing here in the united states and creating jobs all throughout this country. god bless you! >> reporter: the president dealt with several heck amers during his speech there at the auditorium. a couple of people were forcibly removed but generally it was a pretty peaceful atmosphere. new figures this morning say obama raised $29 million just in january. so he is ahead of his fundraising efforts from last year. he was hoping to make $8 million on this west coast three-day swing alone. >> my guess is he'll be back. >> reporter: yeah. this is where he goes for cash. >> all right. anne makovec live for us at sfo where the president is getting ready to take off again, thank you. meanwhile, police are questioning a pilot who flew into restricted airspace as president obama departed for san francisco yesterday out of l.a. fighter jets were scrambled forcing the pilot to land in

long beach. they found more than 20,000 pounds of marijuana on the plane. a spokesman said the pilot had no apparent intention of harming the president. no word on charges he may face. bay bridge users should take note. the westbound upper deck is going to be closed for more than three days and it all starts tonight. drivers are being directed to other bay area bridges and to bart as well which will run limited overnight service. gil diaz reports from oakland. >> reporter: good morning. we're at the entrance to cal tracks. the bridge's westbound -- we're at the entrance to caltrans. bridge's westbound lanes will be closed starting at 8:00 tonight. they are working on the new entrance to the bridgeport. crews are building a detour to finish the span. it will shift the westbound traffic south of where it is right now. it will allow crews to keep on

working. crews will also be installing new barriers and railings. now, as you mentioned, grace, bart is extending its service overnight starting tonight so that you can get to san francisco. trains will stop at 14 stations but it will only stop once an hour. now, this 24/7 service ends on tuesday morning at 1:00 and the bridge is scheduled to reopen on tuesday at 5:00 in the morning. but caltrans says it's quite possible that the westbound lanes could reopen sooner than expected. it just all depends on how quickly crews work and also if weather is cooperating this weekend. back to you, grace. >> all right. we all hope it goes well. thank you, gil. elizabeth wenger not in studio today. she is staying on top of the westbound closure and the ways to get around it. >> a rare appearance outside the studio. there's elizabeth right now at the bay bridge with more on a check of traffic. good morning.

>> good morning, guys. we're thanking lawrence very much today that it's not raining this morning right now conditions are good at the bay bridge. the upper deck will be closed this weekend so we know people will be using the san mateo bridge, the golden gate bridge, the richmond/san rafael bridge and the dumbarton bridge, they will be packed. so we are going to talk more about that coming up later on this morning. in the meantime a check of current traffic conditions outside right now. just getting word of a new problem in hayward. it is in the southbound lanes of 880 right there by highway 92. they have the left lane blocked and we are going to take you out live towards 880 in oakland where everything is still flowing smoothly up and down the nimitz. the golden gate bridge traffic is moving fine across the span. and so far, mass transit including all bart trains appear to be on time. for a check of this friday and this weekend's forecast, let's go to lawrence. >> elizabeth, you stay out

there long enough, i'll find you some rain. a lot of high clouds and patchy fog down below. should be a nice friday outside. but not like yesterday. that was something else around the bay area with temperatures well above average. today we cool down, sea breeze kicking in. 39 now in concord, 4 in oakland, 36 in livermore and 49 degrees in san francisco. by the afternoon temperatures pleasant above average but cooler than yesterday. 65 degrees, sunshine, clouds in san jose. 62 san francisco. about 64 in fairfield. next few days we are going to watch some cooler temperatures coming our way even a slight chance of sprinkles, maybe some light showers into early tomorrow morning. then we dry out. i think now the better part of sunday looks okay but sunday night into monday there's another chance of rain heading our way and by the middle of next week the busted out the 70- degree temperatures. lots of sunshine on wednesday and thursday. that's the latest forecast, guys.

back to you. >> thank you. 4:36 now. an immigration agent is dead, another injured after workplace shooting in southern california last night. investigators say an i.c.e. agent opened fire inside a federal building in long beach yesterday. another agent was shot and wounded. then a third agent intervened and killed the shooter. the fbi is not saying what that argument was about. investigators will bring in cadaver dogs to help find more victims of the speed freak killers. the search is still focused on a property near linden in san joaquin county but they haven't ruled out returning to land in calaveras county where some remains were found just last week. now, the search at the site near linden didn't produce any new discoveries yesterday but dogs will be brought in to check the piles of dirt from the well that was dug up. they also plan to use the dogs it try to locate at least one more well where remains are expected to be found. that search might begin today. the dogs will be brought in from santa clara county. >> we're going to bring the

dogs in so that they may help us pinpoint an area where we need and we'll evaluate there. >> a woman who fears her ex- husband may have been a victim of the speed freak killers went to the site to get information. a lot of others have called the sheriff's phone line about their missing loved ones. in the meantime wesley shermantine now claims his own life is in danger. he says fellow inmates at san quentin turned on him after he recently sent a letter to the stockton record linking his fellow killer loren herzog to the killing of a young girl. the d.a. has no intention of prosecuting the sheriff's wife. eliana lopez married to ross mirkarimi, who faces a misdemeanor domestic violence charge. he also charged -- he is also charged with child endangerment because the incident happened in front of their young 2-year-

old son. a lawyer for lopez had said they wanted immunity for the client in exchange for testimony, concerned that lopez could also be hit with a child endangerment charge. pg&e says it expects to pay at least $200 million in fines from the deadly san bruno explosion. it is the first time the utility has estimated how much the public utilities commission could fine it. executives say the number represents the bare minimum though. eight people were killed, dozens of homes destroyed in that pipeline explosion. it's now 4:39. no badge, no problem. >> how one south bay man proved once a cop always a cop. >> a sense of loss? >> definitely, yeah. shocked. shocked that the house was on fire. >> from historic to history, the bay area landmark destroyed in a fire. and you walk fast or slow? how it could affect your memory coming up.

and final preps are under way in new jersey for the funeral of singer whitney houston. aretha franklin, stevie wonder and kevin costner will be among those paying tribute at the invitation-only service in newark. "people" magazine is reporting that houston's ex-husband bobby brown has been invited despite rumors that family members didn't want him there at all. tomorrow's service is set to begin at 9 a.m. pacific time. it can be seen live on cbssf.com. the house and senate are expected to vote today on a deal to extend the payroll tax cuts through the end of the year. if approved, the tax break will continue to save 160 americans about $20 a week. president obama praised congress for striking a deal and promised to sign the extension immediately when passed. gop hopeful rick santorum will campaign for a second day in michigan today. he is leading in the polls there. he is working to kept his advantage in the state where mitt romney grew up. his father was the governor in

the 1960s. santorum is hammering away at romney's opposition to the auto bailout. romney will campaign in idaho. ron paul will be in washington state. today is the last day u.c.- davis faculty members can vote on their feelings about the school's chancellor. the "sacramento bee" reports that linda katehi is the subject of four motions concerning confidence in her leadership. the main issue that prompted the vote was the pepper spraying of student protestors last fall. the online voting has been going on for two weeks. a police officer between jobs is being credited with helping catch three bank robbery suspects. michael nasser left the san jose police department last year amid fears of being laid off. but on tuesday, nasser stopped to make a quick phone call when he noticed that three men were running out of a bank and says that his police training kicked in. >> just followed them parallel to them as they were running

watching where they were going. got to the place and then the driver's window was down which gave me a good look at his face. >> about an hour later those suspects were arrested in salinas. nasser was fully reinstated back into the san jose police department yesterday for those actions. in bay area headlines the city of oakland's lawsuit against a local motel is headed for court this morning. the economy inn on east 12th is one of three oakland motels initially targeted under california's red light abatement act. the city wants to shut the motel saying it's a hub of prostitution and other illegal activities. police dogs will be used at another east bay high school to deter drug use. the newark school board vote unanimously to allow the use of dogs at newark memorial high school. the dogs will search parking lots and physical education lockers. fremont is considering a similar idea and they are already used in castro valley,

at kelley park. a park employee reported the san jose investigators are looking in a what may have caused a fire that damaged the kelley house. the fire department says more than half of the two-story victorian suffered major damage and part of the roof is collapsed, as well. it's believed to have started on a porch but arson is not suspected. >> whether it's a 100-year-old billion out beautiful new technology company, it's part of this area, silicon valley. the old and the new is what makes san jose and the silicon valley what it is.

>> that house was built exactly 100 years ago in 1912 by former san jose mayor lawrence archer. his daughter louise kelley lived there with her four sons and the orchard became became a famous park. a person has signed a lucrative book deal. a source says amanda knox will get almost $4 million in a deal with publishing house harper- collins. she went to italy as a foreign exchange student. she and her boyfriend were convicted of stabbing her roommate to death but a court overturned those convictions just last year. two bay area men who survived the sinking of a fishing boat off baja, california, are telling their stories on it this weekend. a 105-foot ship capsized during a storm in the sea of cortez in july. two men survived enduring

stinging jellyfish and boat fuel. they will share their stories on a show called "i survived." it will air on the biography channel. 4:49. two other survivors are home from a cold three-days in the sierra nevada. they are raising glasses to toast mark schroeder and janette degrace. they got stranded in snow on sunday. it wasn't until wednesday that schroeder decided to hike out trying to find a cell phone signal. >> i knew he made it. >> you never saw a guy cry to see a cell phone work. as soon as i saw it i cried. when i saw the helicopter i really started crying because i knew we were going to be saved. [ crying ] >> remarkable story. schroeder today plastic bags to his feet with bra straps to protect him as he walked through thigh-deep snow. >> wow. >> like a macgyver move there.

amazing. >> it worked. >> guess he had a little frostbite but will be okay. >> let's check with elizabeth wenger at the bay bridge. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we are live here near the bay bridge near the metering lights because of the big bay bridge closure. the upper deck closure just hours way. if you are just waking up with us, you probably already heard but the bay bridge westbound 80 shutting down at 8:00 through president's day weekend. of course expect heavier than normal traffic on the san mateo bridge, the richmond/san rafael bridge. we are not expecting carmageddon. by this point drivers know what to do in closures like this and there's such a big pr campaign to get word out about the closure for this president's day weekend. let's talk about the morning commute and what's going on right now if you are about to head off to work this morning. looks like there is an accident we're following in hayward. it's in the southbound lanes of 880. we are not seeing a lot of

slowing on our sensors. sound like the number 4 lane is block. at one point they had all lanes closed but they were able to reopen some lanes. live towards oakland 880 not too bad this morning. we can call this "friday light." so far, so good towards downtown oakland. great on 280 in downtown san jose. 101 and guadalupe parkway problem-free. for silicon valley drivers, westbound 237 no issues all the way out of milpitas. looks great towards san jose. travel times on this friday morning, east bay, 18 minutes from th carquinez bridge to the maze. bart is a good option into the

city today. the bay bridge closure starts tonight. lower deck eastbound 80 will be open all weekend. so a lot of this work actually this weekend is construction work on the bay bridge is dependent on weather. they need it to stay dry. they need not to have any heavy rains this weekend. that's traffic. for your forecast, here's lawrence. >> we're have you out in the traffic every day, elizabeth.
