thanks for joining us today. the upper deck of the bay bridge is off limits to drivers. the westbound lanes into san francisco are empty except for some construction crews setting up. it's part of a $6 billion improvement project. more than 200,000 drivers use that bridge every day. the shut down will last until early tuesday morning. lisa washington is live with an update. >> reporter: good morning. this is the 11th hour that the westbound, the upper deck of the bay bridge has been closed. take a look behind me. you can see the bright lights and the mini -- many construction vehicles. the work is underway as the crews reconfigure the westbound lanes. here is how it began at 8:00 california highway patrol shut down i-80 westbound. you can see the cones being put

into place as officers escorted the last cars over the bridge and into san francisco. as for what happens this weekend, the workers have a detour that will allow them to continue work on the new bay bridge. caltrans explains what is happening. we will take traffic westbound out of the toll plaza up the bridge used to run in this area will now run in the orange area. that is the detour we are putting in place to put a construction team in this area, in between the new bridge and existing bridge, demolish a portion of the section that is in the way and build out the rest of the bridge to open the entire thing in late 2013. >> reporter: this is the last time that the bridge is expected to be closed before the bridge opens in 2012. just what are your options if you want to get into this and you can't use the westbound lanes of i-80, use any of the

other bridges. those are the dumbarton bridge, san mateo, richmond san rafael or golden gate and there is bart that is offering all night service at 14 of their stations. a few options. bart may be the option. i am hearing the bridges are getting slow traffic-wise. thank you. and weather-wise, boy, no con -- looks like the weather will be successful. >> i don't think the drizzle with slow them down. lots of fog on the local bay area bridges. a bit of drizzle out there. the patchy fog and drizzle will continue with goal and breezy conditions expected through the weekend. i think they will get the construction down on time. it makes you wonder what we did

stevie wonder are scheduled to perform. today the largest supplier of ipads and iphones from apple says it's increasing wages by up to 25%. the raises cover workers at factories in china operated by fox con, a company based in taiwan. the pay hikes happen as an independent labor organization is set. pope benedict added 22 members to the elite club of cardinals including new york archbishop timothy dolan. this comes amid signs that the 84-year-old pontiff could be slowing down. a san francisco police officer has been charged with assaulting a woman he was dating last month. prosecutors say on january 7th, richard sway rest pushed -- saurez pushed the woman. the officer was off duty at the

a 48 hours mystery, dr. phil to people magazine were fooled. you can see the whole story tonight at 10:00 on cbs 5. a newborn baby taken from eden medical center yesterday is safe home with her mother this morning. police say it was the baby's father who slipped a security band off the newborn and took her from the hospital yesterday. a family spokesperson says the father took the baby after initially being refused access to his daughter by another family member. it was the father's mother who brought the baby back to the hospital. >> she went looking for the baby. she found the baby, brought him back safely, fed him and returned the baby back to the hospital. >> no charges are being filed. coming up, a boy that witnessed a murder and experienced abuse. what he looks like after graduating college. a student rising a above grows up.

from a whole familiy of rising from a whole familiy of rising stars.. he is the youngest of 3 siblings, who practically raised each other.. and definitely wendy student rising above comes from a family of rising stars. he is the youngest of three siblings that practically raised each other. they have been followed for 10 years. now we are introduced to the youngest college graduate. >> reporter: alfonso taylor is the tiny baby in his mother's arms in this picture. not long after it was taken, she was shot and killed by his father. >> i try and just think of it with my relationship now through prayer but it's not the

same. that was alfonso when he was a senior at saint mary's college high school in east berkeley five years ago. foster kids like him have about a 1% chance of finishing college. he graduate from ohio wesleyan last year. he has just started his first big job at a video resource company. >> i'm learning a lot of information. this is a face paced company. >> reporter: we have watched him grow up from the time his older sister kimberly was chosen as a student rising above. she was the first to tell their story of living with their grandmother who was alcoholic and abusive. >> she beat up on my little brothers a lot, actually. they were always scared of her. >> reporter: one particularly bad night, kimberly realized they had to run away. >> it was progressively getting worse. that's when i told them, pack

whatever you need, let's go. >> reporter: it was a rainy night when kimberly, a 12-year- old girl rescued her two frightened little brothers. they took a bus to their aunts. >> who knows if we would have ended up in a hospital or living on the streets homeless. >> reporter: we learned later that alfonso and his brother jose suffered more abuse at their aunts home until they ran away again. by the time jose was chosen as a rising star, they finally found a safe place at another relatives' home. one mentor told us something i will never forget. >> they cared so deeply for each other. i think anybody can survive abuse if you have that in your life. if you have somebody that cares but, you can get beaten but if your sister, brother, family member holds you and says it will be okay, you will survive.

that's why they survived. they had each other. >> reporter: the first to graduate from college was kimberly, u.c. berkeley. jose finished at manhattanville college. now alfonso is a college grad. a professional working in sales and his time at ohio wesleyan helped him develop a special skill. >> i feel like i can relate to a lot of people because i lived in different environments and i want to be able to show people that we are not that much different. >> reporter: when he was a teenager, alfonso told us he was a change maker. now we watch a man making that change. weather-wise it looks like it will be an all right weekend. no rainout, good news for construction on the bay bridge.

>> all right weather. >> we have been so spoiled, i can't say it will be fabulous. >> sun showers? no sun showers today. more clouds for a change. it has been beautiful of late. we have a bit of weather today but nothing major. as we check one of the other bridges here, that would be the golden gate. looks like dry traffic at this hour. lots of clouds around the bay. warm temperatures this morning. looking at upper 40s to low 50s around the bay. good visibility underneath the cloud cover. patchy dense fog here and there, mainly at the coast with the drizzle right there this morning at the coastline. we are expecting a slight chance of showers into the north bay here today with partly cloudy and continued cool conditions through the weekend. a good weekend for few lydman i can't at pier 39. a lot of color out there. patchy sunshine showing through the clouds out there as west

see once again this afternoon the drizzle will lighten up and shine out there with temperatures in the low 60s for the warmer locations. upper 50s brack to the -- back to the bay. rain up on the north coast. just scattered showers into the north bay. cool conditions prevailing. another round of drizzle and showers likely come monday for the holiday but it does not look like a wash out. at this point, a few hundreds of an inch of precip. we continue cloudy and cool through the weekend through next weekend. the dry pattern will continue. we see a bit of moisture late tomorrow into monday. other than that, the fog and low clouds at the coast that will be with us through midday. then we will look for a bid of sunshine by the afternoon with temperatures remaining on the cool side. upper 50s to low 60s to prevail around the bay area today.

as we take a look at the week ahead, more of the same as we continue the cool and dry pattern into if not through all of next week. once again, that includes monday for the holiday. we will see a few light drizzle showers once again as temperatures remain on the comb side here for the foreseeable future. there you go. not exactly a spring forecast but hardly a wash out. >> we will wait on those sun showers. thanks. a new law may expose all the tricks and beautiful magazine lands. a lancome ad with julia roberts touched up raised eyebrows in england. the new bill would make ads explain that the beauty products may not produce the same results because of post production work. they will target the princess culture. the argument is that pretty in pink may be hazardous to girl's self image. jennifer berger the executive director of about face is

joining us live. good morning. >> good morning. >> tell me what your group does. >> about face educates women and girls about how media affects their self he is seem and -- esteem and body images. we teach girls how to take action around these images and how to make them feel better as well as the communities and we have a web site with lots of great information on it including the gallery of offenders and winners. >> you are support of this bill in arizona. >> definitely support it. i don't think it goes the entire way. i don't think a little disclaimer will do the trick for every girl and we are all fine we don't need to do anything else in terms of media literacy but it's a fantastic step and truth in advertising is a good thing. >> speaking of, there was a super bowl ad we were talking about. i think we have video of that. tell us your thoughts on what we are seeing here.

>> the ad is for tele flora. the issue is that a victoria secret model is getting ready for her big valentine's day date. what happens, at the end, she says if you give her flowers, she will get into bed with you. that is what essentially we are seeing here. the issue is this mainstream media takes advantage of the princess culture. if we simply please the opposite sex typically then we get what we want and they get what they want. so, it's a little bit of an issue because of the way that that is -- that is perpetuated throughout the culture. >> the princess culture you are speaking of, i know what you mean. i grew up with cinderella and my sister is battling that. she has a 3-year-old child trying to keep the princess

away. suddenly she is asking santa for cinderella gear. >> princesses are fun to play. don't get me wrong. the issue is the types of value taught. be pretty, be a couple of other lovely things, be strong but be pretty first. pretty is an unrealistic ideal the way our culture created it, thin, usually blond, usually perfect skin, the different things that go into prettiness hold us back from doing other wonderful things in our lives. the princess culture can damage us in a way as well. >> now, the book here that you are promoting, cinderella ate my daughter. it's funny. i should get that for my sister. your group is holding a free reading and discussion with the authority of the book -- author thursday night. you can join the author at

bay area for the weekend with slight chance of drizzle showers out there. we will take a look at the bridges and how dry they may be in a few minutes. >> welcome back to weekend early edition. it's just about 7:30, february 18th. if you are trying to drive from oakland to san francisco today and for the next couple of days, be ready to make a major detour because the westbound lanes of the bay bridge are closed until tuesday. if you haven't heard yet, taking a live look at the bridge, the westbound lanes into san francisco, you can't really see them on the picture, they are empty except for construction crews. it's part of a $6 million improvement project. more than 200,000 drivers use the bridge every day. not today. today construction workers are busy on the new eastern span. lisa washington is live with more. >> reporter: i can tell you no cars, not even one car is on

the westbound upper deck of i- 90 into the city of san francisco. not something that you see very often. as of 8:00 last night, chp closed the highway so construction crews could begin reconfiguring the westbound lanes. this is a temporary detour as they create the new bay bridge. good morning. give us an update? how is it going? >> the kind of work we are seeing makes you want to grab a shovel and help. the crews are working hard. we are on schedule. there is a lot of different types of working on. we are spread out this time because we have so much pavement to do. the paving operation is about to start in earnest. >> there was concern about the weather. no problems now. tell me how you are preparing for the -- i guess progress hinges on the weather. >> one of the things that is fortunate, we haven't seen sustained rain early on.

little while ago. the funeral is scheduled for less than an hour and a half. more than 1,000 people have been invited and many of them are already coming here now. even though it was the middle of the night, whitney houston's fans descended on the new hope baptist church. they knew it would be the last chance to say good-bye. >> look at this. >> reporter: denise dickerson was here at 3:00 a.m. >> she was an angel. her voice was a gift. she was an inspiration. >> reporter: preparations are underway for the very private funeral. friday night her daughter and mother attend add two-hour private viewing at a local funeral home where houston's body was reportedly laid out dressed in white. the funeral home director carolyn whigham says the family is holding up as best they can. last night she passed out memorial programs to fans. >> until you lost your mother, you lost your daughter, you

can't say i know how you feel. >> reporter: police set up a perimeter blocks around the church. this is as close as fans and the media can get to the funeral. houston's godmother, aretha franklin and stevie wonder are slated to perform at the ceremony. her body guard costar kevin kostner is expected to speak. fans will be able to watch it via live camera in the church. >> she is magnificent. >> reporter: houston is scheduled to be buried beside her father near a cemetery where she grew up. as we come back live now, we can tell you also some of the fans have said since they can't get inside the private ceremony, they will have a service of their own outside the police barricades. it will be a candlelight vigil for whitney houston. >> any update on the

the mural they created. painting their vision of the world was a life-changing experience. >> you could just see the confidence growing in their ability to effect change and to make a difference in their community. >> gayle is the president of a nonprofit that teachers under privileged literacy, speaking and technology skills. the project brought students like brenda perez face to face with her public speaking fears. >> it was scary. >> reporter: not only did the students have to do the writing and research for the mural. they had to argue before the city designers and planners to get the permit. >> it's lengthy and complicated. by the third or fourth time we went back, the students were proudly standing up happily answering all the questions to the different commissioners. >> reporter: suddenly public speaking wasn't so scary for brenda. >> i feel more confident now. more comfortable.

>> reporter: people walk by -- katie wanted disadvantaged young people to have a good education. >> if you can think about. >> reporter: they are teaching 450 children to read, white and speak english well. for many english is their second language. gayle is equipping students to break the family's cycle of poverty. it's the first step to having something tangible for them to really have them believe in themselves and have experience that leg college is something that they can obtain. >> reporter: the nonprofit hires teachers from bay area writing project to mentor students at the canal alliance, san rafael high and helms middle school and provide support for teachers. students take pride in writing and publishing their own books. they write and perform history lessons on stage and journal

through the weekend. monday another front approaches the area with a slight chance of showers returning to the forecast for your holiday on monday with temperatures around the bay today and the north california, mid- to upper-50s. at the coast light showers. low 60s across the valley as we look at a bit of moisture pulling up on the coastline. temperatures will be slightly cooler than they have been of late. that is not a big dramatic change but near normal. the trend will continue through the week with the slight chance of showers through monday. a few hundreds of present tip expectation mainly at the coast as we see conditions drying fourth rest of the week and into the weekend which means the bay bridge work should go

looking to repave and paint 80 westbound. i will move out of the way so you can see what i'm talking b. you can hardly see any of the lanes or markings on i-80 westbound. there is no traffic here as the crews are working on the westbound lanes of i-80. the current westbound lanes are in the path of the eastbound lanes of the new bridge so they will shift the westbound traffic so crews can continue working on the eastbound lanes of the new bridge. the bridge is expected to open in 2013 but the construction is supposed to be open and westbound lanes open 5:00 on tuesday morning. >> all right. lisa washington live at the bay bridge. i wish everybody luck trying to get to san francisco today because those alternate routes will be jammed up. last look at weather. >> not too bad. across the golden gate, light traffic with cloudy skies and still a chance of drizzle and showers in the picture all day long but it won't be a wash out. enjoy the weekend. >> we are calling it a morning.
