"speed freak" killer. the revelation about more victims. foggy in the bay area this morning. these temperatures are going to be somebody else by the afternoon, though. details coming up. and that fog could be an issue in the morning commute. a check of bay area bridges. all coming up in minutes. >> thank you. good morning, it is tuesday, february 21. i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm grace lee. people probably going back to work this morning might cost a little more. the next tankful of gas will probably cost more than the last. >> indeed. prices are going up in a big way. i filled up yesterday. 4.02 a gallon. lisa washington in south san francisco with what's behind this $4 gas and it's not stopping there, apparently, either, right, lisa? >> reporter: you are exactly right, frank. no, it's not. not just four bucks but 4.35 a gallon at this shell station on south airport boulevard here in san francisco. that 4.35 is just for regular. the price we pay is directly related to the price of crude oil which jumped to a nine-

month high of $105 a barrel on monday. take a look. the result, higher gas prices, of course. look at the numbers. it shows san francisco an average of .07 a gallon for -- 4.07 a gallon for regular. san jose 4.03. same in oakland. santa rosa 4.01 for a gavel regular. it's not just the increase in gas prices that is hurting our wallets. it's also the trickle-down effect. one gas station owner says higher gas prices actually hurt his business. >> it has a big impact. we make money inside the store not on the gas so when customers don't come to fill up, they don't come inside. >> reporter: so if you have to fill up this morning or in the come days, of course, do be prepared to pay a little more. the price of gas has gone up so

quickly up 5% in the past week. 12% for the year. some analysts say we could see $5 a gallon this summer. >> the reason newt gingrich is saying i'm going to lower gas prices, probably a popular thing. >> i bet all the candidates start to bring that up a little bit. it's sneaky, 3.69, 3.79 -- $4 out of nowhere! lisa washington, thank you. 4:343. all eyes on the start today as it flirts with a milestone. the dow begins the trading day 55 points shy of 13,000. it's a mark that hasn't been reached since before the financial crisis crippled the economy. last week better-than-expected news on the job market and housing industry. it was closed yesterday for the holiday. 4:32. this morning, greece is getting another bailout.

european finance ministers agreed to another $170 billion for greece to avoid a default next month. it would bring the debt down to the maximum sustainable level but first, greece must agree to reforms and cuts. the money will be placed in a special account with enough money to service the debt for three months. if lawrence karnow was stock, i'd buy him because he is delivering this week, wednesday, thursday, friday. why? >> i have some questions you. >> better buy now because by the end of the week it's going to be too late. we have some great weather coming our way. sunshine, but now we are starting out with some patchy, dense fog. over the city of san francisco right now towards the transamerica building, visibility down to a quarter mile in napa and santa rosa. skyline boulevard thick along the coast. 50s and 40s right now.

this afternoon great weather. ridge building in. high clouds over the top of the ridge so the ridge will continuebuild over the next couple of days and the temperatures 10 degrees warmer in most spots alone. 70 in concord. about 71 in santa rosa. 71 in the napa valley and 70 in san jose. 67 degrees in san francisco. these temperatures are going to get even warmer. we will talk more about that in a moment. right now let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> outside a live look at what conditions are like right now across the golden gate bridge so not too bad. as lawrence mentioned, very foggy out there. no official advisories from chp. this accident on the approach to the san mateo bridge westbound 92 car hit the guardrail. off to the right shoulder, no major delays. towards the bay bridge, it is open and ahead of schedule as we have been talking about for the last couple of days now. and everything is good to go now all the way up the incline no delay into san francisco and all the approaches to the

macarthur maze look great, as well. so a quick check of the south bay into downtown san jose there are a few headlights heading out of downtown san jose and guadalupe parkway fine at the limit. so much more traffic including where roadwork might slow you down in a couple of minutes. back to you. >> thank you. some developing news out of antioch. authorities are trying to find suspects who drove the wrong way on highway 4. the chp says they drove westbound in the eastbound lanes at somersville road. witnesses saw the car bouncing off the center railing and hitting a disabled vehicle on the right-hand shoulder. the suspects abandoned the car and ran on the street. today search crews plan to resume searching near linden for more victims of the "speed freak" killers. convict killer wesley shermantine has described the location of a third well where he claims a body can be found. that's according to bounty

hunter leonard padilla. it's supposed to be within a mile of a well in san joaquin county where searchers have found hundreds of human bones. >> the map he drew is based on what he knew 13, 15, 16 years ago. it doesn't have anything to do with the layout of the land today. >> he and his partner could have dumped up to 30 bodies. the dig for victims has caused taxpayers $90,000. in the meantime, padilla sent a $2,000 check to wesley shermantine and his information has helped crews find the remains of at least two victims in san joaquin county so much. holiday weekend capped off by another oakland shooting. police were called to 82nd and international last night. they found a young man with gunshot wounds to his lower body. witnesses say a silver bmw with three men inside were seen speeding away from the area. it's the latest in a string of shootings in east oakland. three men have been killed since thursday and several more have been injured. suspect in a weekend murder

in berkeley scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow. 23-year-old daniel jordan dewitt from alameda was arrested near the murder scene. dewitt was a star football player at alameda high school. his parents say though he suffers from mental illness and has since he was age 18. they say the mental health system failed him. >> they get shoved in a hospital for a couple of days and get shoved back out, thrown medications on massive dose of medication and then just put back out on the street. >> it's a battle just to keep him in the hospital. he has been in and out of the hospital nine times. >> berkeley police say they did not respond quickly to a call about a suspicious person outside the victim's home because officers were busy monitoring a protest march in the city. in hayward police are trying to find a man they say should be in custody and not on the streets. police say 32-year-old jose hernandez slashed his own throat and stabbed himself before they detained him outside his ex-girlfriend's house on saturday night.

he was treated for the wounds and sent for a psychiatric evaluation. then he was let go. instead of being returned to custody. police say hernandez has extensive bandages and sutures around his neck. in a few hours a former los angeles schoolteacher will be heading to court. mark berndt will be arraigned on charges of lewd acts against 23 children dating back to 2005. prosecutors say that the 61- year-old took bizarre bondage style photos of his students. he has been in jail since his arrest last month and bail set at $23 million. a county official in sacramento under heavy scrutiny now for the thousands in taxpayer money that he used to furnish his office. sacramento county ceo brad hudson is being questioned by a county supervisor over his expenditures including a white noise machine that cost $15,000. he says it keeps his eavesdroppers from hearing confidential meetings. also, $21,000 in new office

race for president. rick santorum is expanding his national lead in the republican race for president. the latest poll shows that he leads mitt romney by 10 points, 36-26%. santorum has risen five points in the past week, romney dropped 7. newt gingrich and ron paul are in the low teens. here's susan mcginnis on how the poll numbers are affecting santorum's campaign style. reporter: rick santorum was joined by his family at a campaign stop in grand rapids, michigan. >> we actually get a chance to spend some time together this week. >> reporter: santorum is leading in the polls and talking like a front-runner. he ignored his republican rivals focusing his attacks on president obama. >> whose side is he on, is the question. we need someone that's on your side. >> reporter: michigan is mitt romney's home state. with the primary a week away he is trying to convince voters

that santorum isn't the right person for the economy. >> i don't think it's appropriate to raise the debt ceiling. he voted five times to raise the debt ceiling. >> reporter: romney has plenty of cash to help him catch up. his campaign raised $6.5 million last month. and a super pac supporting romney raised 6.6 million. newt gingrich's campaign is also very healthy financially. he raised more than $5.5 million in january but the former house speaker is far behind in the polls. gingrich is now promising voters that he will get gas prices down to between $2 and $2.50 a gallon if elected. >> why are gasoline prices so high? well, it turns out that barack obama is for expensive gasoline. >> reporter: ron paul is campaigning in north dakota. he continues to concentrate on caucus states believing that will help him pick up delegates. susan mcginnis, cbs news, washington. 4:43 now. a state lawmaker is seeking to restrict disclosure details

from 911 calls. she is concerned about the publicity generated from details of the 911 call involving actress demi moore. a bill under consideration in the assembly would prohibit law enforcement agencies from releasing medical or personal identifying information in emergency calls. if you own an iphone 4 you might get $15 from apple. the company has settled a class action lawsuit over that antenna problems. owners complained their phones dropped calls soon after they bought it in june 2010. some 21 million people were eligible for the payout. they have the option of getting a $15 check or you can get a free case, as well. this is the big party day in louisiana as mardi gras season comes to an end. >> today is fat tuesday. it's traditionally the biggest day of celebrating and then it ends when lent begins tomorrow. for now, it's all about parades, drinking and craziness

, of riverban a councilman from northern california has been arrested for dui and child endangerment. police say he struck a car while drunk yesterday and then ran from the scene lying his injured son behind. the child had a bloody nose after being hit by an airbag. police say white smelled strongly of alcohol and had slurred speech and had trouble standing. he has since bailed out of jail. a dramatic rescue from a burning ship in the middle east happened off iran in the straits of hormuz. a team of documentary filmmakers came across a ship on fire as it carried fuel from dubai that was destined for iran. crewmembers jumped into the water to get the passing boat. the fire was reportedly caused

by a problem in the engine room but some pretty dramatic video there. a skier with bay area ties survived a deadly avalanche in washington state. a new safety backpack kept her on top of the avalanche that killed three of her friends. this is video of the same backpack saved a snowboarder during a colorado avalanche this month. this past weekend elise and eight other expert skiers got caught in an avalanche. >> it feels like maybe you're in a washing machine and you're being tossed and turned and it's all white. you're not really sure which way is up and down. i believe my backpack saved my life. >> she lives part time in santa cruz. the avalanche killed three other skiers including one who was found only three feet away from elise. there are two golden retrievers who are safe after being rescued from the side of a cliff in southern california. dog owner sherry wilson says she let him out and for some reason, they bolted for the

cliff immediately. she says the dogs lily and marcy never stopped and went right over the edge. she was in a state of panic. witnesses called 911. wilson says that the contours of the terrain were crucial for the rescue. >> they must have had landed in a bush or something. it was an area where it wasn't straight down. it was straight down for like 30 feet or so. >> rescuers from l.a. county fire were able to hoist the dogs up one by one. they weren't hurt. sherri wilson says the dogs had never been by a cliff before so probably didn't recognize the danger. fog out there this morning thick in spots dense fog in the valleys. temperatures not bad mainly into the 40s right now. by the afternoon, most of that fog is gone. just a couple of high clouds and lots of sunshine outside. check out these temperatures by the afternoon. 60s at the coast, even some low 70s beginning to show up in

some of the valleys so some much nicer weather is on the way as this ridge continues to build in. still a couple of high clouds dropping of the top of the ridge but other than that lots of sunshine come our way and these temperatures are going to be something else over the next couple of days, well above the average for this i am too far year and that will continue through the middle of the week. as we look toward the south bay this afternoon, looking at 71 degrees in morgan hill, 70 and sunny in santa clara. 67 degrees in redwood city. even 65 degrees today in half moon bay. east bay temperatures up in the 60s and low 70s by the afternoon and as you make wear inside the bay beautiful weather today, 68 degrees alameda. 68 in oakland. 66 degrees in mill valley and 71 in santa rosa. overlook the next couple of days even better weather as the offshore winds crank up on wednesday and thursday maybe some mid-70s possible. then we start to cool down a bit come friday. partly cloudy skies, showers on monday. that's a look at weather. here's elizabeth with traffic. >> thanks, lawrence.

we are going to go right out towards the san mateo bridge. slight location change eastbound 92 right there near the toll plaza coming off the bridge. that is where there is an accident. car hit the guardrail so everything is off to the right shoulder. and it's not causing any delays but again if you are heading toward hayward just a heads up. otherwise in the commute direction, westbound 92, traffic still looks great. no major issues here. should be about a 13, 14-minute drive time or so in these westbound lanes heading out towards the peninsula heading towards 101. otherwise, the bay bridge, this looks great. no issues this morning all across the upper deck heading into san francisco and all the approaches are nice and quiet. no major incidents out there right now, bottom line. so here's a live look at silicon valley commute westbound 237. really not much yellow on any of our sensors. you can see it up and down the peninsula there 101 and 280 everything looks great through san mateo county or if you are heading up towards downtown s and you're east bay drive times in the green for your more

actually to promote good nutrition. more facts and figures if you are keeping score at home. it weighs more than 12,000 pounds, includes 1200 pounds of almonds and 5500 pounds of sugar. >> what do they do with it afterwards? >> nibble on it. a family suv became a makeshift delivery room when a minnesota mom gave birth on the way to the hospital. her contractions were 5 minutes apart when she, her husband and 2-year-old left home for the half hour trip to the hospital. they thought they had enough time. it soon became clear that the baby was not going to wait. >> started pulling her pants down and started delivering the baby and i looked -- i'm -- it's all kind of blank from there i guess. >> i think he is still in shock. >> i think so. >> a team of doctors was waiting at the hospital. that's baby mckenna, she weighs 6 pounds, 12 ounces. mother and daughter are doing just fine.
