cain. gingrich is behind rick santorum and mitt romney? national polls, but as anne makovec reports, it's still anyone's race. >> reporter: newt gingrich is polling low, aiming high. >> i am running for president, to be president of all the people, to reach out, to run a campaign while i seek the republican nomination. i want to run an american campaign. [ applause ] >> reporter: according to a new field poll, gingrich is at the bottom of the pack. rick santorum has seen a surge among registered republicans, still behind mitt romney. ron paul has 16%. but only 10% of respondents said they are very satisfied with their choices. many can't make up their minds. >> i've been kind of holding off, to tell you the truth. >> reporter: gingrich's speech was mainly about energy independence, repeating the mantra, drill, drill, drill.

>> mr. speaker, what's your strategy for california? >> reporter: he didn't want to use the media to help voters make their choice. he didn't answer any questions. >> will you make yourself available at any point for questions, sir? >> reporter: ron paul supporters got a worse reception. >> we're being asked to leave the building. >> why? >> because everybody was being very peaceful, but there were a lot of ron paul supporters here and newt was in there. so they wanted us to go outside. >> reporter: but surprise guest former candidate herman cain came to stump for gingrich and stayed on task. >> the key to winning california is the youth vote, as well as independents and moderates, and that requires a strong message. and speaker gingrich had a strong message today on energy and i love them. that's how we're going to win in california. >> reporter: california's primary is on june 5th, and california's delegates make up 15% of what's needed to become the republican nominee. in burlingame, anne makovec, cbs 5. meanwhile, gingrich's rivals

are campaigning in michigan, which holds its primary on tuesday. mitt romney faces a tough battle against rick santorum. the most recent poll results have them just about tied. each candidate is now attacking the other's conservative values. >> i think santorum wishes he could take back what he said. he talked about how he voted for some things because he took one for the team. the team has got to be the people of america. >> it is absolutely laughable to have a liberal governor of massachusetts suggest that i am not the conservative in this race. [ applause ] >> neither newt gingrich nor ron paul have been actively campaigning in michigan. we want to update you on a developing story in south san francisco. the barricade of an apartment complex on baden avenue has just come to an end. authorized say the incident began with reports of a fight and multiple shots fired around 12:30 this afternoon. no one was seriously injured by gunfire. investigators later found a suspect vehicle at a nearby

apartment. >> we determined that one of the possibly involved subjects was at that location on the 800 black of baden there, and as a result, they did a search there of the residence. >> police could not confirm whether they have the alleged shooter in custody. officers are continuing to search homes in the area for additional suspects. fire crews responded within minutes to a fire today in crockett, while attending a funeral just around the corner. services for a retired fireman were interrupted by reports of flames at a nearby laundromat. attending firefighters quickly toss order their gear to battle the two-alarm blaze. fire authorities believe repairs to the building were to blame for the fire. >> the owner of the building was working on the roof, making some repairs, and there's a lot of lint in the attic and what happened was, it got a fire started in there and it moved pretty rapidly. >> a senior living home next to

the structure was temporarily evacuated. fire crews contained the fire within half an hour. new information tonight on a case of vandalism we brought you earlier this week. officers arrested five teenage boys accused of hurling river rocks at homes, cars and mailboxes in livermore. police say the boys admitted to throwing the rocks from a car driving at a high speed last saturday. in one instance, a large rock hit a wall next to a child's crib. no one was hurt in any of the incidents. your wallet and what you're shelling out for gas has become fuel for presidential candidates. republicans blame the president. the president says there's no immediate solution, and still, we're using less and paying more. don knapp explains why. >> reporter: gas prices are climbing daily, and nobody likes it. >> i buy gas all over the bay area, so we try to shop all we can. >> reporter: what's behind it? after all, u.s. demand is down. every week for the last 48

weeks, according to the associated press, demand has dropped. it's now 5.7% below last year at this time, yet prices are up. >> i've been price shopping gas for days and i forgot to get it this morning, so now i'm stuck getting it here. >> reporter: republicans, sensing an advantage, blame the obama administration. >> president obama's policy has resulted in an unprecedented slowdown in new exploration and production of oil and gas. >> reporter: and republican presidential hopeful newt gingrich is promising cheaper gas. >> there's no reason we can't get back to a reasonably priced gasoline and diesel price at around $2.50 a gallon. >> reporter: but the president is firing back, saying republicans don't have a plan, just a bumper sticker that says drill, drill, drill. >> you know there are no quick fixes to this problem and you know we can't just drill our way to lower gas prices. >> reporter: so what is behind the gas price increases? china gets some of the blame. its demand is rising and taking more world oil. so do tensions over iran's

nuclear program, which threatened to cut off iran's oil sales. >> my feeling is it's speculators. i think chevron makes a lot of money and their price still goes up higher. >> reporter: according to one energy analyst, speculators are the problem, adding as much as $20 a barrel to the cost of oil. that equates to about 50 cents of a gallon of gas. he tells cbs news that two-thirds of all oil traded is bought by investors, banks and hedge funds. >> right now, that's the cheapest thing on the board for speculators and investors. they are saying it's going to get more expensive, i'm going to get in now. >> reporter: by one calculation, if the price of gasoline goes up $1 over the course of a year, for the average family, it will wipe out the benefits of the payroll tax cut. don knapp, cbs 5. well, dozens of people said good-bye today to a space that has changed millions of lives in the bay area. st. anthony's foundation's dining room opened its doors for the final time on jones street today. the nonprofit organization has

provided meals to those in need since 1950. guests were invited to paint the walls, contribute to a time capsule, and as you see, even do a little demolition work. >> it's a place where you get to come and have conversation and bring, you know, get your life back in order and you find dignity. >> st. anthony's will continue offering thousands of meals a day in an interim dining room across the street. a new dining room is expected to be open in the summer of 2014. an apology is apparently not enough. american service members killed in afghanistan in what the taliban calls retaliation. the protests popping up all over that country. and those home made ball park signs will be harder to read at one bay area park. what critics suspect to be behind the a's sign restrictions. and so much for a spring-like temperature in the 70s. felt quite a bit cooler today all across the bay. what does your seven-day forecast hold? we'll tell you, coming up.

recalled all international ministers from afghan ministries for the first time in a decade-long war. the move comes after the shooting deaths of two american military advisors in a heavily guarded ministry building. violence is increasing in the wake of protests in afghanistan over the burning of copies of the quran at a u.s. army base. >> of course we have a tense week behind us, and it is very regretful to see the loss of life again on this day. this is a very, very tragic incident. >> the taliban is claiming responsibility for the attack. president obama has apologized, but that has done very little to stop the protests. things are back to normal tonight, at sacramento international airport, after a security scare. the check point at terminal b was closed this morning, as five people suspected of going through an unstaffed metal detector were rescreened. the detector was unattended for less than a minute.

federal transportation officials have removed two officers from screening duties. hundreds came out to the ball park today, hoping to take a very active part in the 2012 san jose giants season. the minor league team held a job fair, looking to hire ushers, ticket takers and concession attendants, among other positions. one applicant says he is looking for his fourth job just to stay afloat. >> i got three temporary jobs, actually four temporary jobs right now. so i'm looking to fill in the evenings. >> i'm a baseball fan and i love baseball. any opportunity i can get to the game or close to the game, i'm all for it it. >> team representatives said applicants would be notified in the next two weeks. new ball park restrictions at the coliseum aren't going over well with a's fans. starting this season, home made signs or banners larger than 3 feet by 6 feet won't be allowed

feed your lawn. feed it! and do something fun or sily together . juve heard of flash mobs, large groups of people who show up in a public place and do something fun or silly together. here's a twist for economic hard times. a cash mob. it's when a large group gathers to help out a struggling business, by spending money at that business. in this case, it's at the fresh mex fresh restaurant in fulsom. the message spread through twitter and facebook. cash mobs have been popping up all over the country and in canada. and hundreds of people took the plunge this morning. [ crowd screaming ] >> they braved the chilly waters of the san francisco bay as part of the special olympics polar

plunge. costumed participants took a dip in the bay, to help raise money for special olympics athletes in northern california. on wednesday and thursday of this week, i think people all over the bay area would have thought that looked pretty good, because it was warm. but things are about to change? >> it was cooler today, kind of felt more like we usually see at this time of the year. so yeah, 70s are gone for a while. temperatures out the door right now mostly in the 50s. temperatures are 10 to 15 degrees below what they were yesterday. so, yeah, if you thought it felt cooler, you were right. 57 in oakland, 52 in san francisco, 53 out in napa right now. for tonight, we're going to drop temperatures down even farther, mostly in the 30s to low 40s across the bay area. a clearing sky, so clear and cool is the name of the game for overnight tonight. tomorrow, kind of a similar story to what we saw today. partly cloudy skies, kind of a mix of sun and clouds and temperatures will be mostly in the low to upper 50s. now, checking the future cast,

over the next 72 hours, dry tonight, overnight and on sunday, late sunday night, check out monday around midnight. looks like we are going to get light rain. this is not going to be much. by early monday morning, it should pretty much be out of here. checking future models, you can see it's pretty much dry by tuesday at 12:00 a.m. just some light rain with our first storm system moving through. overnight lows, mostly in the 30s and 40s across the bay area. 43 in oakland. 36 in vallejo, 31, one of our cooler spots in santa rosa. forecasted highs for tomorrow, again, mostly in the 50s across the bay. 61. we may squeeze out a couple low 60s like in vallejo. 58 in oakland and fairfield. 54 tomorrow's high in san francisco. so the forecast over the next couple of days, we are keeping partly cloudy skies for sunday. then very late sunday night, looks like we could see some very light sprinkles moving through. then pretty much should be out of here by early monday morning. but then looks like tuesday

night into wednesday, we could see a more significant storm system. it could bring up to an inch of rain in some parts of the bay area. then we're drying out once again for thursday, friday and temperatures get a little more seasonable, reaching about the mid to upper 60s, especially in inland spots. one of the a's starting infielders goes down with a knee injury, and so much for team work. danica wrecks again, but this time, a teammate is to blame. sports is next. ♪

the cup. he would win the hole, to advance to the semifinals. he'll take on lee westwood and whoever moves on will have a shot to claim the world's number one ranking in the finals. hunter mahan will take on mark wilson in the other semi final. st. mary's' needs to win tonight to win the conference title out right for the first time in 23 years. top ranked kentucky clinched the sec title with a win over vanderbilt. anthony davis is looking more and more like the player of the year. he had a career high 28 points to go with 11 rebounds, and the nation's leading shot blocker added 6 more to his total today, beating vandy 83-74 for their 51st straight win at their arena. stanford women have a home winning streak of their own, beating utah 69-42 for their 78th straight win at may else. and cal beat colorado 64-43.

the bears and cardinal will meet next sunday in berkeley. bob knight's temper was legendary and it appears the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. his son pat knight, now head coach at lamar, sounded a lot like his father after a recent loss. >> we got the worst group of seniors right now that i've ever been associated with. we've had problems with these guys off the court, on the court, classroom, drugs, you -- i mean, being late for stuff. >> when i played, if you acted like the way some of these guys did, you got shoved in a locker with a forearm up against your neck and told you don't do that. that's not how we do things here at indiana. i feel sorry for this school. i mean, these kids are stealing money by being on scholarship. >> well, those kids probably won't be in a hurry to attend any reunions. tom brady was back at his old high school this week for a fund-raiser. the former padre still remembers his freshman year when as the
