talk with before that case moves forward. clouds moving in now. we are waiting for some rain. when will it hit? we'll talk about that coming up. and we have only one northbound lane open on 101 heading towards the golden gate bridge. plus, we have chain requirements for the sierra. we'll tell you all about your morning commute coming up. good morning, it's tuesday february 28. it's leap year so we have another day to go here in february. i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm grace lee. it is 4:30. we start with google. the company is donating food to people who have been displaced by an apartment complex fire in mountain view. that fire drove dozens of residents out of the dana garden apartments near highway 237. lisa washington reports. >> reporter: good morning. yes. we're actually at that school right now. this is an elementary school where the red cross set up the emergency shelter after that fire. this was a huge fire for the

mountain view firefighters. it was four alarms and a number of firefighters from different agencies assisted the. five of the units were destroyed. five more had smoke and water damage. in all, 26 units were affected. but some of the residents may be able to go back to their apartments today after they are evaluated. no resident was injured. one firefighter had a minor injury. it took an hour to get the fire under control. >> because it's a multi-unit facility and we wanted to prevent it from extending to other units as quickly as possible. >> reporter: the firefighters will continue their investigation today for the cause of the fire and the amount of damages. the good news is none of those residents were injured in the

massive fire. >> thank you. just into the newsroom, we are learning that a second student has died after a school shooting in chardon, ohio, where classes are cancelled today after a teenager opened fire on a group of students yesterday. hundreds of people gathered last night in chardon for a candlelight vigil for the victims. police say tj lane opened fire in the cafeteria at the chardon high school. five students were shot. a witness say a bullet grazed her ear. >> he stayed silent the entire time. didn't say anything before or during. >> a teacher chased lane from the cafeteria. police arrested him about a half mile away from the school. sources say lane told authorities he was being bullied by some of those that were shot. lane tenants school for at risk students about 16 miles from -- lane attends school for at-risk

students about 16 miles from chardon. a video of ross mirkarimi's wife will be allowed in the misdemeanor trial. the jury trial starts tomorrow. the judge will also hear motions by eliana lopez's lawyers. she wants the case dismissed. she is not sure whether she is going to testify. >> she has to make a decision whether to testify what she said on the tape. >> the video won't be released until the jury sees it. the judge also wants to interview a woman who says mirkarimi abused her when they dated a few years ago. then the judge will decide whether to let her testify. i think a lot of people want it. >> what's that? >> rain. it's come. >> we already got cold. >> we'll have to wait a little while. clouds are gathering at the coast as another system is making its way onshore.

we'll see a lot of clouds, sprinkles but not a big deal. overlooking the bay right now we have some partly cloudy skies. concord 41. 39 in livermore. cold and freezing in santa rosa. 32 degrees right now. here's the system i'm talking about. you can just see clouds making their way into the bay area. not much energy but it's sliding through and already bringing a couple of light sprinkles in toward the santa cruz mountains. looks like that's going to pass through keeping a lot of clouds in our skies. the main cold front is going to move in tonight and it will bring in rainfall tonight into tomorrow morning. this is going to sag south throughout the day today so it's going to get things going. temperatures very cool again. well below average for this time of year. 55 degrees for the high in san rafael. 57 in mountain view and only 51 degrees an breezy in pacifica. next couple of days the rain returns to the bay area. expect rain off and on turning to showers before tomorrow afternoon. maybe a few leftover showers on thursday. friday a return to some warm weather and this next weekend we get it right. 70s, how about that, elizabeth?

>> mid-70s making a comeback. >> thanks. we're going to enjoy this dry commute while we have it because it's quiet. here's a live look at the bay bridge. they picked up overnight roadwork and there are no accidents or stalls anywhere across the bay. what we have are chain requirements for the sierra. all your major routes to get up there on interstate 80, highway 50 and 88. outside here's a live look at the san mateo bridge. one of our "timesaver traffic" cameras. so far, so good. you can see that drive time 14 minutes out of hayward in westbound lanes. the westbound lanes are the right side of the screen commute direction towards foster city and the peninsula. a lot of roadwork on the dumbarton bridge picked up. live look at the golden gate bridge, far left lane open to northbound 101 traffic. otherwise southbound 101 looks fine through the waldo grade. and mass transit so far everything is on time including bart. that's traffic. back to you. >> thank you. it appeared to be a traffic

accident but it was really a robbery. morgan hill police now have a composite sketch. a suspect ran into the back of a 19-year-old woman's car last week. she is pulled over talking to him about the crash when suddenly he punched her until she fell down then stole her purse and other items and took off in the stolen car that he was driving. this morning, a "speed freak" killer is reaching out again from death row. in a letter sent to bounty hunter leonard padilla, wesley shermantine mentions one of the possible victims, joanne hopson's name is the only one referenced in the letter. shermantine says if the remains are identified as hobson's he had nothing to do with it. he is blaming his partner in crime loren herzog. padilla is pushing on the sheriff again to call on the fbi to help recover more remains. >> as long as wesley is cooperating, we have to get out there and look for the bodies.

at some point he is going to get upset, frustrated and say it doesn't matter that i sit here and put myself in this kind of position you guys aren't doing anything about it. >> the sheriff's department has been in contact with the fbi but so far has not officially asked for their help. sheriff's deputies in santa cruz are looking for a man they say grabbed a teenaged girl as she was on the way to school. the girl got away. she said that at about 8:15 yesterday morning, an unshaven man in rusty red ford pickup truck drove slowly alongside her and then stopped. he was wearing a red and brown sweatshirt, tan work pants and boots. even after she broke free he continued to follow her to harbor high school. san jose state university will continue its long-time policy this fall by giving admissions priority to freshmen from santa clara county. university briefly considered ending the policy to reduce enrollment because of millions of dollars in budget cuts there. sjsu has higher admissions standards than the california

state university system in general but gives priority to santa clara county freshmen who only need to meet the minimum csu requirements. we have a couple of big republican primaries today in the race for the white house. it comes as a new poll shows mitt romney is regaining momentum nationally. he leads rick santorum 32 to 28%. and just a week ago, santorum had a 10-point lead. newt gingrich and ron paul are a distant 3rd and 4th. today's biggest primary is in michigan where romney grew up. polls there suggest a tight race between him and santorum. of the five polls conducted in michigan over the weekend, romney leads in three, santorum in two. in arizona, a new public policy poll shows romney leading santorum 43-26%. and two officers are recovering after a scuffle with "occupiers" at the state capital in sacramento. demonstrators were there to protest a separate rally by a

neo-nazi group. officers were escorting the group away when the "occupiers" started throwing rocks and paint balls at them. at least three protestors were taken into custody. it's 4:39 now. birth control pills voluntarily recalled. >> and the packaging mistake that could lead to an incorrect dosage for the pill. >> people who need extra help getting to sleep, a nightmare. the link between sleeping aids and cancer. the gas is cheaper than the competitors. the special deal that has bay area drivers saving more than a buck a gallon. where's that? ,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,

up freely. state lawmakers decided to place the issue on colorado voters will decide if marijuana smokers can light up freely. state lawmakers decided to place the issue on the november ballot so this leaves the legality of recreational marijuana smoking up to voters. supporters submitted a petition with more than 170,000 signatures to colorado's secretary of state to get the issue on the ballot. voters hit the polls on november 6. a voluntary recall is in effect for birth control pills. apparently there was a packaging error that could lead to unintended pregnancies. the birth control pact are sold as [ indiscernible ] anyone

using them should check to see if the exact count or sequencing of the pills is out of order. the expiration dates on them range from july 31, 2013 and march 312014. a uc-san diego study says people who use sleeping pills may increase their chance of death. 34,000 people were followed. half of them took sleeping pills. study found subject who took drugs like ambien and lunesta were dying in greater numbers than those who didn't. >> after i thoroughly convinced myself that this was really there, was i willing to put my name on this paper. >> this is just one study. and, you know, i would wait to see for the recommend a repeat

of the findings. san mateo county transit officials are softening a proposal to raise ticket prices on caltrain. they proposed an extra 25 cents per zone for a one-way ticket, 50 cents per zone for a full day pass and now they are recommending the same increases for a whole trip or a whole day without the zones. the goal is to encourage riders to use the clipper cards and qualify for discounts. the peninsula joint corridor powers board votes on the proposal on thursday. another day another jump in bay area gas prices. it's so painful out there now. aaa reports a gallon of regular is up more than 2 cents just since yesterday. but it's cheaper at nine bay area stores. the safeway in pleasant hill is selling gas for 35 cents less than its local competition. >> how much will you save? >> on this? five bucks and 12 bucks. it's worth it. with everything going on in the economy. >> when you see these gas prices, what is anyone to make

calls for 4-point-6 million dollars in cuts to tsunami warning and prep the obama administration's proposed budget for next year calls for $4.6 million in cuts to tsunami warnings and preparedness programs. those programs were used less than a year ago when tsunami

waves caused millions of dollars of damage to the santa cruz harbor. those problems were caused by a 9.0 earthquake in japan and now scientists say debris from the destruction in japan is making its way right here to north america. up to two tons of debris from destroyed homes and harbors in japan are believed to still be churning around in the ocean. the university of hawaii. researchers say up to 5% of that debris could reach hawaii, alaska, british columbia, washington, and oregon sometime soon. today a french fishing vessel is [ indiscernible ] italian cruise ship. the ship with more than 1,000 people on board is expected to arrive at the main port in the seychelles on thursday. the costa allegra lost power yesterday after a fire in its generator room. two tugboats are now steaming toward the ship and are expected to reach it by this afternoon. newark lint airport is back

open this morning -- newark- liberty airport is back open this morning. it was shut for an hour last night after a united airlines plane made a belly flop landing. there was a problem with the landing gear. none of the people on board were hurt. emergency crews used flame retardant foam as a precaution but there were no reports of fire or injuries. there is a big if with this story. lawrence can fill us in in a moment. but if the sky is clear, you will be able to see the international space station flying over the bay area in the next three nights at 7:32 tonight, 6:35 tomorrow night and 7:17 thursday night. the space station will move across our skies starting in the west or northwest. it will look like a bright trekking along the sky. >> we won't see it tomorrow. tomorrow touch and go. more clouds are on the way. but a cold front is sliding in

and cloudy skies tonight. the rain likely to make a return. now we have partly cloudy skies around the bay area. breezy at the coast. temperatures by the afternoon still going to be on the cool side. below normal only into the 50s. a lot of clouds floating across our skies, thickening up into the evening hours. and then it looks like later on tonight some rain. cold front is on approach now. some clouds out ahead of it could bring sprinkles. we have seen some of that into the santa cruz mountains but not much. the system really going to thicken up tonight into tomorrow morning where we'll see the brunt of the storm pushing through. 6:00 this evening, chance of some showers developing in parts of the north bay. the clouds already rolling in across the rest of the bay area then slowly overnight it sags to the south. so by 4:00 in the morning pretty good rainfall around the bay area. some places maybe an inch of rain in parts of north bay so a good soaker headed our way which is great for us. enjoy the day today. it will be cool but mostly dry. 56 degrees in morgan hill. 55 in san mateo.

only 51 and breezy in pacifica. cool temperatures in much of the east bay highs there only in the mid to maybe upper 50s on the warm end. inside the bay 55 degrees in oakland. 54 in alameda. about 51 degrees in daly city. and 56 in santa rosa. next couple of days a return to wintry weather around the bay area. looks like very cool temperatures continuing today and looks like that shower activity will continue into thursday, as well. but by friday and this next weekend, tell you what, we've cranked these temperatures up even more so. 70s? yup. up in the high country going to be slushy up there on the slopes. but down below here it's going to be looking fantastic. >> i that the you liked the rain. your voice went right up when you started talking about the rain. >> i love the rain. nothing like a beautiful weekend. >> the weather guy likes changes. >> variety. >> he's a wacky dude. let's throw it over to elizabeth in traffic. we'll head towards the san mateo bridge. our camera was moving a lot in our traffic report likely due to wind.

they issued a wind advisory. now, that's interesting. i wonder if it was cancelled? for a while caltrans had their warning signs up letting you know about high winds on the bridge. we'll check in with chp to see what's going on but there may be a wind advisory for the san mateo bridge on west and eastbound 92. again, our cameras still moving around a bit so even if there is a wind advisory or not, still breezy that way. "timesaver traffic" camera. towards the sierra there are chain requirements on all the major routes to get up there on 80, 50 and 88. you can see it's a winter wonderland out there. they are in effect on 80 between kingvale and tahoe. so again watch out for that but all the major routes pack the chains or at least have your snow tires ready. elsewhere golden gate bridge traveling northbound 101 only one lane open for maybe another 20 minutes or so or maybe even less than that. but otherwise southbound 101 traffic looks okay.

they haven't done the lane change yet. a few headlights heading out of downtown san jose. so quiet in the south bay so far this morning. we are heating up later on tonight. there is a sharks game. they take on philadelphia at 7:30 over by hp pavilion. so we could see extra delays along the guadalupe parkway but all in the green so no major incidents. down the eastshore freeway westbound 580, nimitz and 24, all the way through walnut creek no problems. coming up a check of mass transit. also remember kcbs once you do hit the roads. they're our radio partners. and you can find them at 740-am and 106.9-fm. >> the signs always change when you least expect it. >> we have to figure out what's going on. possible wind advisory for the san mateo bridge. a major change for the america's cup race in san francisco. the racing team basis once slated to be built at piers along the embarcadero will now be at 80 in the dogpatch neighborhood. mayor lee said negotiations to refurbish piers 30 to 32 lasted

through the weekend but in the end it was in the best interests of the event to call that off. oracle racing already has operations and storage at pier 80. finally, we got a daytona 500 winner. >> it took a wheel but first they had to get through the rain delays and a future fireball. lap 159 under caution. juan pablo montoya collided with a truck and that was not good set off a massive fire causing a delay of more than two hours to repair the burned- out track. final lap matt kenseth won his second daytona 500. in baseball, opening day weeks away down in spring training. >> dennis o'donnell is in scottsdale with the san francisco giants with a concern about the team's star closer. >> reporter: good morning. if the giants are going to get back to the world series they have to have a healthy brian
