looks like it gutted the duplex pretty bad. a lot of activity going on. we are still gathering information. we'll go back to this story as soon as we get more on it. >> the weather will help because we have our "eye on the storm" this morning. it's been raining for the past few hours. where is the storm headed? let's check with lawrence. it's raining and cold. >> like it's supposed to? it's supposed to this time of year. [ laughter ] >> rainfall moving in now. the core of the front spreading across the bay area right now. let's check our high-def doppler radar. you can see that rainfall making its way through but see that band of yellow and orange stretching across the peninsula? that's the main cold front sliding through. heavy rain at san francisco, daly city. along the coast expect moderate to heavy rainfall as the front moves through and along with that strong gusty winds. sfo seeing winds to 30 miles per hour. 24 in fairfield. 20 in oakland and 18 miles per

hour in livermore. this cold front moving through today. but we're not done with the rainfall. after it moves by, behind that we have cold air giving us plenty of showers on and off throughout the day today. temperatures again running well below average for this time of the year mainly into the 50s outside. it will be cool, brisk, breezy and occasional showers continuing today and into tomorrow, as well. after that, things settle down on friday. this next weekend some of those temperatures up into the 70s, frank. >> up and down and all around. all that rain means a whole lot of snow is coming down up in northern california in the sierra. this is kingvale. highway 80 we found some people from the bay area having a good time in the cold weather. >> you got to be ready for anything, roll with the punches. i'm having fun, though. my actually first realtime with snow. so it feels good. it's fluffy. i'm freezing. >> first storm's great. second storm, not so great.

well, check it out. the water supply, this is all good news for that. yesterday's snow survey found the snowpack had 30% of normal but our main reservoirs with full thanks to last year's rainfall. elizabeth, we are going to check with you to see how the rain is affecting traffic. we have chain requirements in effect towards the sierra. rain affecting us and wind, as well. we have wind advisories including the san mateo bridge, bay bridge, as well. pretty windy across that upper deck so be extra careful heading into san francisco. we are getting flooding reports this morning. southbound 101 near rohnert park some lanes flooded and marin county around lucky drive where we usually see it. this is the golden gate bridge where you can see it is especially slick heading into san francisco. a couple of accidents out there. this one right now is blocking the left lane. castro valley westbound 580 by

castro valley boulevard. so mass transit might be a good option. coming up a check on that. in the meantime, back to the desk. >> thank you. 4:33. new this morning, a collection of antiques may have been lost in a north bay during a fire. fire alarm woke up the owner of a home on the outskirts of napa about 9:00 last night. the napa register says the owner runs an antique store in the town. she said she was not able to carry any valuables out of the burning home. damage estimated at $100,000. the cause of the fire is under investigation. 4:34. we have more motions today in the domestic violence case involving san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi. anne makovec is in san francisco where the lawyer for his wife is trying to get key evidence kept out of trial. >> reporter: this morning, at 9:15, the judge is going to consider a motion by the lawyer of mirkarimi's wife asking for the entire case to be dismissed. that lawyer says that these photos should not have been released last week showing

marks on eliana lopez's arm allegedly caused by her husband ross mirkarimi on new year's eve. they were taken by her neighbor ivory madison and lopez's lawyers says the photos should have been protected under attorney/client privilege because madison graduated from law school. also, that lawyer says that lopez's right to privacy was violated by this. now, on monday, the judge ruled that the photos and the video that they came from could be used as evidence in this trial. mirkarimi of course has pleaded not guilty to three misdemeanor charges, domestic violence battery, child endangerment and dissuading a witness. now, also, this afternoon some potential jurors are going to be filling out questionnaires but the actual jury selection is not going to begin until march 5. back to you. >> thank you. the man accused of shooting a federal agent in newark will also be in court today. dennis bagwell will enter a plea for his attempted murder

charge. court documents suggest that he was obsessed with the victim's wife. on february 7, police say bagwell had a confrontation with robert suplik outside his home before the shooting. suplik was shot several times and at last check he was in serious condition. the man romantically linked to alameda county supervisor nadia lockyer hints at more details to come in their story. the man spoke out during a court date in san jose saying, quote, there's a way bigger story than the sex tapes. he referred to a tape reportedly sent to nadia lockyer's husband state treasurer bill lock yes. the "chronicle" office chikhani says he meant there is more to relationship more than they know. they were in rehab more than a year ago and the relationship became public after a fight between them in newark earlier in february. chack. the walnut creek police department is changing the way it patrols the city. the police chief announced a reorganization yesterday to make better use of limited

resources in the city. among the changes, more officers assigned to downtown where there's been an uptick in crime. but there will no longer be officers dedicated to traffic enforcement and some school programs will be scaled back, as well. brighton hopes some changes will be only short term. the san francisco unified school district has approved 485 preliminary layoff notices. by law, the district has a march 15 deadline to notify any workers who might lose their jobs before the next school year. district officials predict an $83 million deficit in the next two years and that is based on governor brown's budget proposal. in politics, mitt romney now has the momentum in the republican race for the white house. he went two for two in yesterday's primaries narrowly beating rick santorum in michigan and by 20 points in arizona. as susan mcginnis reports, all four candidates are actually trying to stay positive. reporter: mitt romney moves on to next week's super tuesday

taken its first crucial step to avoid bankruptcy. council members voted six to one... allowing the stockton city council has taken its first crucial step to avoid bankruptcy. councilmembers voted 6-1 allowing mediators to negotiate with creditors now. mediation process lasts 60 to 90 days. if it fails, stockton could become the nation's largest city to go bankrupt. the city manager says the city is in this mess partly because of mismanagement by former city leaders in the 1990s. pg&e expects customers to pay for the bulk of the pipeline upgrades. the utility announced ratepayers would cover 84% of

the upgrade and modernization costs down from the original proposal of 90%. $2.2billion project would bring pg&e's pipes into compliance with new energy regulations. >> these new types of projects and work that are needed to meet new state standards for pipeline safety, we're asking to be covered in rates. >> factoring in some financing, some analysts put the total cost of the project closer to $5 billion. state public utilities commission will make the final decision on funding this year. two firefighters are recovering after battling a house fire in east san jose. the flames broke out on commodore drive by cape verdes yesterday. it took about an hour to put out the fire. but not before the roof collapsed. one firefighter had to be treated on scene. the other was taken to a hospital with unknown injuries. crews also found about 2,000 rounds of live ammo in the

garage. no word on what sparked the flames. san francisco police have released this surveillance video in connection with a library fire. officers are looking for a man who set sunday's fire inside the library branch on grove street. the video shows a person of interest entering and exiting a restricted area just before the fire. if you have any information about this, call the san francisco police. well, the president of the california fish & game commission says he will not be stepping down. dan richards is under fire at sacramento for hunting down a mountain lion in idaho. 41 state assembly members are asking him to resign. richards says there is zero chance of that happening because it is illegal to kill a mountain lion in california, but it is "legal" in idaho. his letter says, my 100% legal activity outside the state of california or anywhere else, for that matter, is none of your bills. but california lieutenant governor newsom says it is the voters' business with two major

yesterday and several trailers flipped. harveyville a small town, two people were seriously injured. the rough weather affected 60% of the 150 people who live in harveyville. divers are trying to get inside a coast guard helicopter that is under water in mobile bay in alabama. three crew are missing after the chopper 5 crashed into the bay last night. a fourth crew member was killed. fog has been hampering the search for the crew. the helicopter is in 13 feet of water. prosecutors in ohio are expected to ask a junk that a high school shooting suspect be tried as an adult. 17-year-old tj lane made a brief appearance at the chardon courtroom yesterday as authorities finally released some of the reportings from 911. >> 911, where is your emergency? >> we just had a shooting at our school. we need to get out of here. >> this is chardon high school calling. we are in lockdown. we need assistance right now. >> okay. we're -- >> there's a student with a gun. >> the death toll from monday's

shooting rose to 3 yesterday. but one of the two wounded was released from the hospital. meanwhile a prosecutor dismissed media reports that the shootings may have been connected to drugs or bullying. san jose city council has voted to expand a pilot program of a 15-mile-an-hour speed limit around schools in the city. since november the slowdown has only been enforced at trace elementary school. the feedback is actually positive. so the program will now expand to more schools in san jose, door sa elementary school, montgomery elementary school and silver creek high also all on the east side and bookson elementary school in willow glen. >> i clearly have been a supporter and strong proponent of lowering the speed limit but sometimes it takes times to get other colleagues and city staff on board. >> state legislature passed a law in 2008 to give cities the option of dropping the speed limit around schools. how about some weather? it is wet and

wild. rain and gusty winds, with lines of yellow and orange as it pulls through is the main cold front sliding through the bay area right now making its way toward the san francisco area. cold front through san francisco into daly city moderate to heavy rainfall continuing pushing to the south and east throughout the morning hours. so yeah, it is going to be a pretty wild ride if you are heading out this morning commuting anywhere. we have some rain and some wind to again your day. temperatures fairly mild but the cloud cover and the raindrops 40s and 50s. this afternoon, it will all turn to showers. so we are going to see some sunny breaks then occasional showers. then a little more sunshine. you get the idea we're going it play that out over the next couple of days. highs will be below average in the 50s and breezy, too. here's the system sliding in through the bay area right now. behind that, you have cold speckled clouds that will crank

out the showers. so the cold front moving through this morning, behind that breezy conditions and unstable atmosphere. the front moving on early on and through the afternoon more scattered showers popping up into the afternoon. should be really an interesting day to see the cloud and rainbows toward the afternoon and we'll continue with the unsettled weather right into thursday. temperatures are going to stay cool again. only 52 degrees into pacifica, 55 in san francisco. and 57 degrees in san jose. things unsettled and wet. more scattered showers through thursday. then things begin to taper off. some of the temperatures headed up into the 70s. let's check the slick roads with elizabeth. >> thanks, lawrence. and we'll take you outside show you what these conditions are like on the roads. you can see it here across our golden gate bridge camera. we have raindrops on the lens. you have that kind of haloy effect happening from street lights so yeah, it is slick all over the bay area from the north bay to the south bay.

we are getting a couple of flooding reports in. earlier there were flooding reports in rohnert park where we usually see it, marin county, along 101. so yes, as lawrence said, it's going to be a rough morning commute so give yourself extra time, be extra careful. you know the drill. we are following a couple of accidents including castro valley. westbound 580 by castro valley boulevard. speeds are slow already this morning across that stretch. also, westbound 80 by mare island we are getting an accident reported there so again, seeing more slowing coming into vallejo so westbound 80 is sluggish. we have a couple of wind advisories in effect as well for some bay area bridges. pretty gusty this morning across the upper and the lower decks of the bay bridge. now, we're not seeing any major slowing this morning across the decks, no roadwork should be out there because it is raining, they tend to not -- usually not as much roadwork out there so bay bridge looks okay. but san mateo bridge you will notice that high wind advisory

in effect here, as well. caltrans has warning signs up so overall things are light not quite 5:00 in the morning but, of course, that can change later on in the morning commute and grab your chains if you are heading up towards the sierra. we have chain requirements in effect for interstate 80, highway 50 and highway 88. your drive time still though all in the clear across the east bay. that's traffic. back to you guys. >> a lot of skiers heading to the sierra this weekend. it's 4:54 now. a new bill will bring food trucks closer to schools in san francisco but not without a fight. right now, food trucks are banned within 1500 feet of schools. the new legislation introduced yesterday would allow trucks to operate within 500 feet or one city block away. supervisor scott weiner says the law that bans food trucks hurts small businesses. parents groups say students will choose cheaper and unhealthier food trucks. the 49ers move from san francisco is getting more serious. a ground lease for the football team's new stadium was approved by the santa clara stadium authority last night.
