to say, other than this is [ bleep ]. how's that? >> emotions flare up in the sheriff's domestic violence trial. why one attorney is calling out the judge. storm clouds rolling in again. it is starting to rain in parts of bay area. we'll have more on that coming up. and we have seen several different accidents across the bay area including one in oakland. we'll tell you all about it coming up. good morning. it is thursday, the 1st day of march. good to have you with us. i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm grace lee. it's going to be a day of protest instead of teaching on college campuses. this is happeningsacross the country. organizers are calling it a national day of action for education. anne makovec in berkeley where protestors are planning an early start. >> reporter: it's a little early for college students or late. they are starting at 7:30. we're talking about students, workers and faculty all joining forces on this day of action

and then later they are going to be marching over to oakland to join forces with other east bay schools. now, here's a look at some of the video from a recent "occupy cal" protest. day of action for education has been going on for years. this time "occupy" is joining forces with the movement. this morning's protest starts at 7:30 outside california hall. that is where much of the upper administration works here at cal. protestors say they are targeting the add minute's role in privatizing the system and repression of "occupy" cal. the larger message calling for governor brown to reject any budget deal that including education cuts or tuition hikes. they are supporting tax hikes on the rich. so gathering at sproul plaza at noon, then marching to oakland city hall, a big rally at 5 p.m. and as you mentioned, this is a prelude to a larger event next

monday. thousands of students from all over the state will be marching in sacramento talking about occupying education and occupying the capital. back to you. >> berkeley leading the charge. all right. anne makovec live in berkeley, thank you. in the meantime, students in livermore will be back in class after their school was locked down for several hours. a woman reported seeing a gunman inside east avenue middle school yesterday so for two hours police searched every room in the building but found nothing. police haven't confirmed the gunman was ever there. the kids went home around 7:00. on to ohio now. today is the deadline for prosecutors to file charges against high school shooting suspect tj lane. the charges are expected to include three counts of aggravated murder. prosecutors will likely ask that the 17-year-old be tried as an adult. three students died and two wounded by monday's shooting at chardon high school. classes are set to resume tomorrow. but students plan to march to

the school today. it is 4:32 now. at least a dozen deaths are now blamed on stormy weather that unleashed tornadoes in the nation's midsection. people in parts of illinois, kansas, kentucky, missouri, tennessee all dealing with extensive damage. the storm prediction center says at least 16 tornadoes have been reported since tuesday night. hardest hit was harrisburg in illinois about 9,000 people in the town. 6 people were killed when blocks of homes were just flattened. >> it was terrifying. i have never been through anything like this. it did sound like the train coming through the living room. >> another potentially dangerous storm system is forecast for tomorrow in the midwest and the south. an avalanche warning has been issued in the sierra as a powerful winter storm continues to batter the region. authorities are saying that intense snowfall a weak snowpack and wind gusts up to 90 miles per hour could make conditions dangerous.

chain controls are in effect on 80 and 50, which means big business for some locals there. >> this is fantastic for my business. i work right here at the truck stop and i'll tell you what we sell chains and you make commission off chains and you do really well for yourself here. >> poor visibility on highways has reduced speeds to 30 miles an hour from colfax to the border. forecasters predict up to five feet of snow in some areas by today. frank heading up there. >> i know. i was just going to say, i hope it clears up say around 5:00 today. let's find out from lawrence, what's the deal? >> as we head toward the afternoon it will break up around the sierra nevada. >> good. >> just for frank. >> just for you, frank. we are going to clear things out. still another band of rainfall making its way back into the bay area right now. let's check out our high-def doppler radar. yesterday afternoon we had a few showers moving on by but now the focus again a little further to the north. the rainfall beginning to move back in right now. parts of the north bay we have

some mixed precipitation up there. seeing some sleet even across some of the higher peaks there but you have some yellows and oranges trying to show up so we are going to see this sliding down across the rest of the bay area this morning. so expect showers to be picking up into the morning hours. then toward the afternoon, we begin to dry things out. temperatures mainly in the 40s outside. you have 41 degrees in san jose. 48 in san francisco. and 45 degrees in livermore. you can see the system sliding through. the main cold front has gone by but now you have all this cold air behind it. this next wave of moisture sliding through lots of snow again up in the sierra nevada. and a few raindrops around the bay area. temperatures for highs again below average for this time of the year mainly into the 50s. there is much warmer weather on the w -- that's a look at weather. here's elizabeth with traffic. >> thanks, lawrence. we are following a fatal accident with a motorcyclist so it's on the connector ramp from northbound 880 to eastbound 80. sounds like it was just a solo

motorcyclist. he was driving along and not sure if conditions were slick but anyway that motorcyclist is apparently dead confirmed with chp coroner on scene now. one lane of the connector ramp apparently is blocked. so again northbound 880 at the eastbound 80 connector ramp. 880 through oakland main lines of the freeway look great as you pass the coliseum. no issues here according to the our "timesaver traffic" camera. bay bridge quiet, as well. you notice that drive time down the eastshore freeway still holding steady, 18 minutes from the carquinez bridge to the maze. we'll have much more traffic including a check of mass transit coming up. in the meantime, back to you. >> thank you. 4:36. the jury that will be seated for the ross mirkarimi trial will see that disputed videotape. the judge rejected a motion from sheriff mirkarimi's wife eliana lopez to disallow the video that shows a bruise on her arm. lopez's lawyer says if lopez is put on the witness stand, she will have nothing to say unless she is granted immunity.

>> she is going to say, i refuse to answer this question on the grounds that my fifth amendment rights are implicated and i exercise my fifth amendment rights not to incriminate myself. >> does eliana have anything to say? >> she doesn't have anything to say, other than this is bull [ bleep ]. how's that? >> that sums it up. mirkarimi's trial is scheduled to begin monday with jury selection. it's now 4:37. there are graverobbers on the peninsula. colma police warn recyclers to be on the lookout for hundreds of bronze and copper vase that is stand about one-foot-tall. thieves stole them from cypress lawn cemetery last month. they struck twice about two weeks apart. it will cost $87,000 to replace those vases but melted down, they are only worth about $4,000. and police are searching for a man who robbed a southern california bank and shot a police officer. it happened outside the california bank and trust in chino. the suspect who was wearing body armor fired at the officer

and hit him once in the leg. the officer drove himself to the hospital. he is expected to be okay. and no one else was hurt in this incident. two nato servicemen were killed in southern afghanistan. both gunmen were also killed. nato says one of the gunmen is believed to have been an afghan soldier. meantime, britain's foreign secretary says the uk is closing its embassy in syria and withdrawing all its diplomatic staff. the move comes amid concerns about the worsening security situation in syria. syria's crackdown on anti- government rebels is entering a new phase. government forces are preparing to cleanse rebel strongholds in homs. the opposition says troops loyal to the president bashar assad are gathering outside the city for a ground invasion. a suspected serial killer is acting as his own attorney and will be fighting for his own life. prosecutors say they will seek

the death penalty for 78-year- old joseph naso. he is on trial in marin county for the murders of four women from 1977 through 1994. he is eligible for the death penalty because there are multip victims. clay rojas a former police officer was sentenced for his role in illegally supplying confidential information to a hells angels member. rojas was trying to pay off a debt. he was fired back in 2010 after the department learned about his scheme. 4:39. privacy has a whole new meaning today. >> that's right. of the controversial policy google starts today. also ahead.. >> he is 41, she's 18, legal but gross. >> forbidden "love." what a northern california teacher is giving up to be in a relationship with an 18-year- old student. man versus nature imagine this coming after you? the grizzly encounter between tourists and a bear.

companies. a federal judge judge struck down the government's label requirements for tobacco companies. the food and drug administration would like cigarette packages to show smoking dangers. agency wanted graphic images such as rotting teeth, diseased lungs, among other things on the packages. the virginia judge blocked the requirement calling it unconstitutional. obama's birth control coverage faces its first challenge in the senate today. the president's policy requires health insurers and employers to cover the cost of contraception and that includes choice. republicans are pushing legislation to want the option to be able to get out of any provision that they object to on moral or religious grounds. and a bill introduced in the state senate would allow people other than doctors to perform certain abortions here in california. under this bill nurse practitioners, physician

assistants and nurse-midwives would be able to perform routine abortions in the first trimester. advocates say half the counties in california don't have access to abortions. >> it's very necessary to have physician assistants in the areas who women already trust and go to for their care, it will be, you know, really wonderful that also women have this access to abortion. >> pro-life advocates are very angry. right to life told the l.a. times, this is the first step down the road to making it appear like abortion is a simple drive-by 15-minute diversion. today maryland will be the 8th state in the nation to legalize gay marriage. the governor expected to sign the law recently approved by the house and the senate there. the measure will take effect in the summer but opponents will most likely challenge it in court. new jersey lawmakers approved same-sex marriage last month

but the governor vetoed it. northern california teacher is giving up his job so he can be with his girlfriend. >> she is a former student and she is just 18 years old. that's 41-year-old james hooker who is moving in with a girl who is sitting next to him. hooker left his wife and children. in a phone interview, the former teacher says the relationship did not begin until after her 18th birthday. >> definitely wrong for him to have pursued her in any way while he was still a teacher. >> he is like 41, she's like 18? so that's legal but it's gross. >> the girl's mother says she believes hooker became romantically involved with her daughter while she was still under age. modesto police are investigating the relationship but no charges have been filed yet. this morning, google has a new privacy policy. the company will start to know and share a lot more about what you're doing. it will start saving user information, collected from all its services in one place.

good news for high-speed rail in california. the obama administration is giving them a break on the timeline to start construction. it had been to start in september this year but now rail officials say they can still get federal funding as long as the funds are obligated by september and the first leg of the system is finished by 2017. cruise ship that lost power stranded in the indian ocean for three days has arrived at port. all the passengers were finally able to get off the italian ship this morning. they had no bathrooms for the last four days. it lost power after a fire on monday. a fishing boat towed them into port into the seychelles. today the island nation, their red cross was on hand to give those folks a little bit of help. at a time when companies are laying people off, there is a refreshing change from alaska airlines. the alaska air group announced it is paying out almost $54 million in annual bonuses. remember those?

that works out to roughly three weeks' pay for 13,000 workers. a ticket agent who has worked for alaska for 25 years says it's great. [ laughter ] >> we're happy it was doing well. at one point they weren't sure if oakland was going to close and now i feel secure that we have a job. nearly $5 million headed to employees in california. a close encounter of the scary kind. >> so scary that a lot of people admit they wet their pants. a grizzly bear frightened 14 people in alaska. they were on a tour to see them close and personal. a little too close so some group members who had video rolling when the bear charged

at them took these pictures. >> i felt an electric feeling in my skin. you could hear him breathe. you could see the space between his teeth. he smelled like rotten carpet. [ laughter ] >> i don't know if you know that smell. >> i can't believe they didn't flinch. look they're shooting this like look there's about a 2,000- pound bear coming our way. >> they're told not to move. larry griffith thinks the bear was upset that the group was in his fishing spot. understandable. >> if i want to see bears i'm going to the zoo. [ laughter ] >> i think that's safer. >> yeah? >> you see bears all the time when you go fishing >> i have seen a lot of bears. can be scary. if you head out today we have changes coming up with showers in the forecast for today but we also have some more raindrops outside. golden gate bridge a nice shot. we should get more of these live shots at this time of the morning. looking good now but rainfall is pushing in at least in parts of the north bay right now. those showers will continue to sag to the south throughout the

morning hours. then it looks like the rain is going to be picking up so the rain showing up to the north right now up in through the napa valley. you're seeing showers in the north there and more of that on the way. the air is cold enough we could see a light snow dusting across the mountain peaks. high surf continuing at the coast. high surf advisory continues through 9:00 this morning. watch now for some 14 to 18- foot waves there. the showers will taper off heading toward the afternoon probably going to see plenty of sunshine in between the clouds and temperatures though will stay cool mainly into the 50s. here we go. the system sliding through yesterday behind it all that cold air another wave of moisture developing on the back side and now sliding into the bay area keeping things unsettled and, of course, lots of snow up in the sierra nevada. they are going to get hit by another possible two feet of snow above 5500 feet in the sierra nevada as well across some of the higher peaks. watch out, winds gusting to 60 miles per hour up there. so if you are traveling that way today, it's best to leave in the afternoon if you can. behind the system, we have high pressure that's going to build

into the bay area. what a change it is going to be in the next few days as we are going to see some temperatures soaring back up into the 70s. scattered showers around the bay area though into the afternoon but tapering off and then i think we're done with the rain for at least a while. temperatures going to stay cool mainly into the 50s outside. and pretty brisk out toward the coast. the next couple of days high pressure builds back in. those temperatures warming up. 60s as early as tomorrow. this weekend looking fantastic! temperatures soaring into the 70s with an offshore wind going to be blowing around the bay area. >> it is? >> looking good for the weekend ahead. maybe as we get back toward the middle of this next week -- [ laughter ] >> -- a couple of clouds float our way. >> take a breath. >> thank you so much. >> got so excited, choked. >> it happens. >> sun balls across the board. >> nice. >> super. >> sun balls. coliseum. things are fine. we don't have any wind advisories. so obviously travel conditions are not as bad as we saw yesterday for the morning commute. but this is the scene of a bad accident happening around 3:00 this morning. it was a motorcyclist that ran off of the overpass and was killed so chp is still on scene northbound 880 on the ramp to eastbound 80. the right lane of the connector ramp is shut down. chp we just got off the phone with them. they say they will be out there for at least another half hour. all right. here's a live look through the golden gate bridge all across the span. everything is nice and quiet no major roadwork across the stretch. lawrence says it's rainy in the north bay so you may find slick conditions in marin but other than that quiet. no major incidents across the north bay. bridges fine. a live look at the san mateo bridge. this is the commute direction of westbound 92 and yeah, either direction is moving fine. yesterday we had a wind advisory. so travel conditions were harder. today not the case. at the bay bridge, looks good,

as well. westbound 80, in the green from the carquinez bridge and looks great across the upper deck into san francisco. east bay drive times so far in the clear. so that's what we like to see. off to a great start on westbound 580 and the nimitz and westbound 24 so far fine out of walnut creek. mass transit always a good option so far everything on time including the bart trains heading into san francisco. >> thank you. i know you like yoga so listen to this. apparently it can be painful and even cause major injuries. that's what a new book is saying about yoga. about 15 million americans practice this ancient exercise. bill bratt has done it for 30 years. his new book on the science of yoga has ignited a firestorm. he says, it is not as safe as you think. >> there are these arteries that go through the vertebrae and you start scrunching around with them, and you start getting, you know, clots and those clots go into your brain?

presto change-o, you have a stroke. >> i am seeing things like wrist sprains, shoulder strains involving the rotator cuff, aggravation, disk bulges that could be happening in the neck as well as the low back. >> the author says certain postures like head stands, shoulder stands and the plow are downright dangerous so how to avoid getting ha hurt? >> experienced teachers and smaller classes. if tiger woods wasn't playing golf he might be a navy seal. that's what his former swing coach is saying in a tell-all book about the golfer. he says woods was obsessed with the military. he thought about joining the navy even when he was dominating the pga tour 10 years back. his agent called the author's claim ridiculous saying the author only cared about self promotion. tiger did not authorize the book, not happy about it. a big day in is. the winner of the daytona 500 matt kenseth will be taking a victory lap through the city of san francisco this morning.

>> it's a tradition. kenseth will be in a motorized cable car here in the city. the tour will start at 10:45 at the north vista point of the golden gate bridge. it's followed by a rally at ghirardelli square. it marks the official countdown to the 350 sprint cup series weekend planned for june in sonoma valley. >> he is zipping around in the car. >> a neat deal. i didn't know they did that to bring the daytona guy here. cool. a super athletic granny thinks she has what it takes to join the country's most famous cheerleading squad. >> the 55-year-old has 10 weeks to get ready for the dallas cowboys auditions. sharon simmons is already a national fitness competitor. she is taking dance lessons from a former dallas cowboy cheerleader and if she makes it on the squad, she will be the oldes cheerleader in the nfl. she says she doesn't see a difference between herself and her 19-year-old rivals. >> my grandmother did not look like that. a school scandal in the bay area takes another turn. >> why some employees are now in trouble this morning. it was like a growling. it was loudest growling that i have ever heard. >> just as they were picking up, more bad weather on the way. how the heartland was stunned by a number of tornadoes. other than the rain, another thing we have to watch out for today, high surf. coming up, we'll tell you more about a high surf advisory that's in effect for a good chunk of the morning. and a day of action on college campuses up and down california. how these protests could lead to an even bigger one. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
