are expected to survive. we'll have a live report from the hospital at 5 a.m. lisa washington is in washington park where shimon perez will visit facebook. >> reporter: the 88-year-old israeli president says the focus is innovation and that continues in menlo park where he will meet with the ceo of facebook mark zuckerberg and the coo sheryl sandberg to launch his official presidential facebook page. in addition, he will also participate in an interview that will be broadcast live through facebook's streaming service. already the israeli president visited ibm research and development in san jose and he was the guest of honor at a dinner hosted by the ceo of cisco. as for facebook, perez says he wants to create new social

states vote today. rick santorum and mitt romney are in a dead heat in ohio and tennessee. romney stumped yesterday in zanesville, ohio. >> we have to cut federal spending, cap it and finally balance our budget. >> 12-1 in ohio. it's amazing we're still in this race. >> santorum also spent primary eve in ohio. ron paul campaigned yesterday at the university of idaho. that state has a caucus system in which paul tends to perform very well. newt gingrich campaigned in tennesee. he is pinning most of his hopes on his home state of georgia where the polls show he has a huge lead. cnn's delegate estimate shows romney has 207 so far, more than the other three combined. president obama will hold his first news conference of the year. he will make a statement and

take some questions from the press at the white house at 10 a.m. pacific time. he is expected to tackle the economic recovery, presidential election and rising gas prices among other issues. right now he leads all of his potential challenges. san fernando sheriff ross mirkarimi's lawyers are saying he will not get a fair trial in san francisco. so they have filed a request to move his domestic violence trial to another venue. that decision is pending. so is an appellate decision on allowing a videotape of mirkarimi's wife eliana lopez showing a bruise on her arm to a neighbor. in the meantime a former girlfriend of mirkarimi's testified in open court that she was bruised by mirkarimi four years ago. when a verbal argument turned physical. christina flores said that the argument was over a pair of women's panties that she had found at his house. flores also told the court that she was still seeing mirkarimi when he met lopez during a trip to south america and got her

pregnant. the state capital in sacramento is cleared of protestors this morning after a day of demonstrations ended in more than 70 arrests. yesterday's protest was to express anger about state budget cuts to higher education. this cut led to higher tuitions and fewer courses at california's public colleges and universities. >> our tuition right now is $36 a unit. we're tired of it. >> the california highway patrol says protestors were arrested after they refused to leave the capital despite repeated warnings. a university task force is holding off on putting out a report on the pepper spraying of students at uc-davis. the group made that decision yesterday. it learned the police officers union plans to seek a court order to block public disclosure. the uc-davis task force had planned to publish the report online today before discussing findings and recommendations at

a public meeting. let's check in with lawrence. a little cooler and wetter. >> scattered showers around the bay area and that's the case at least in the morning hours. but i think it will be the winds the big story by the afternoon. hi-def doppler picking up on some of those scattered showers as a weak cold front slides on by here. but boy, what a difference as we medical toward the latter part of the day. gusts at sfo of 44 miles per hour. expecting some gusts this afternoon as high as 55 miles per hour especially out toward the coastline and over the coastal mountains. northwesterly winds a good 25 to 35 miles per hour. so it is going to blow. it is going to be much colder than normal as these temperatures for highs only about 54 degrees in pacifica if we're lucky 55 in san francisco and 56 in livermore. a very cool brisk day around the bay area. the showers ending early this morning. and then we start to dry things out. looking toward tomorrow, the weather improves and by thursday and friday we have offshore winds going again. those temperatures looking very nice all around the bay area. all right. let's check on the roads now

with elizabeth. >> thank you, lawrence. let's take you outside. this is some video taken a little while ago from one of our coworkers. she was coming into work. this is an accident we have been following in san mateo. northbound 101 right there by 3rd, they were able to reopen a second lane, now two lanes are open to traffic but obviously you can see a lot of emergency vehicles were on scene just a short time ago. so there were up to five different vehicles involved in the crash. we're told just minor injuries. there is some minor slowing there at the scene. of course it is still early but again they are working to clear this accident now. and they actually just gave us an estimated time within the next five minutes. they hope to completely clear the area. in the meantime that traffic alert is in effect northbound 101 at 3rd. back to you. >> thank you. iran has released a statement today saying it will give united nations inspectors access to a secret military complex. but the inspectors will be allowed only if there is an agreement on guidelines for that

inspection. it's suspected there is secret atomic research at the facility. tornadoes in the midwest and south, fema has begun assessing the damage. hundreds of national guardsmen have deployed to help survivors. 42 tornadoes swept across 10 states on friday. the death toll is now 40. food truck operators in oakland are stepping up security measures after a number of recent robberies including one that turned deadly. the mobile merchants association is hiring armed services to help protect the food trucks in the fruitvale area. they are also planning to install cameras there and some of the merchants are arming themselves. they say there aren't enough cops to protect them. >> we cannot depend on opd, you know, protecting us alone. we can't. i mean, they're swamped. >> the city does not have

control over all this crime so time the people stand up. >> nearly two months ago a 5- year-old boy was shot and killed in front of the family's taco truck. one of the groups campaigning to recall oakland mayor jean quan has suspended operations. recall and restore says it would not have got the required signatures by may 14. they also say they couldn't afford to pay its staff. but a second recall petition from a different group is still being circulated until the july 2 deadline. pg&e is warning you to be on the lookout for imposters. they say someone posed as a pg&e worker on sunday and tried to gain access to someone's home in alameda. the person wanted to shut the electricity but the homeowner didn't let that person inside because they weren't wearing a pg&e uniform. always ask for identification. hundreds of bay area drivers with a dui on their

records may get a do-over. the audit showed san francisco police were not regularly calibrating their breathalyzers for accuracy . what that means is that hundreds of dui cases dating back as far as 10 years may be dismissed. the district attorney and public defenders office say they are working together to correct this. >> this is a big deal for both. >> i think it's a big deal but i think it really illustrates the fact a public defender and district attorney that are willing to work together. >> the review process could cost thousands. the police department has shelved all 20 breathalyzers for now. thousands of jobs in jeopardy at yahoo, coming up. >> also ahead, i can't use my hands, i can't walk. >> well, she can't get around without it. the precious item thieves stole from a bay area woman. and slipping and sliding.

employees. that's according to the technology web site "all things d." it says the sunnyv to yahoo may lay off thousands of employees according to the technology website "all things 3-d." it says they are expected to make an announcement by the end of the month. divisions targeted for layoff including pr, research and marketing. in a statement, yahoo said, our leadership is engaged in a process that will generate significant change at yahoo but final decisions have not yet been made. there will be no public vote on the $850 million loan for the 49ers new digs. a judge ruled yesterday in favor of the team's plan to start building its santa clara stadium this summer. opponents wanted a separate vote on the construction loan and say voters were not fully aware of the financial risk

when they okayed the project in 2010. but the judge said the city's approval of the loan is not subject to a referendum. injured giants fan bryan stow was moved to a rehab facility because he no longer needs constant medical care. the family says the 43-year-old will now undergo aggressive therapy to increase his independence. they say he still has trouble with mobility and memory. it's been nearly a year since he was attacked outside dodger stadium. car thieves in the bay area hitting a new low. someone told a man's wheelchair van sunday from vallejo. he was paralyzed in a car crash. he depends on the van to get around now. >> once anyone looked at the van will see that it's wheelchair accessible. the passenger seat is no longer there. that's where i sat. there is a ramp to get in.

>> the family filed a report with vallejo police and the van is on the stolen car hot sheet but the department says they don't have manpower for a search. if not recovered, a new van would be as much as $40,000. california's ban on drivers using hand-held cell phones is apparently saving some lives. that's according to a uc- berkeley study. researchers say traffic deaths dropped 22% since the law took effect nearly 4 years ago. deaths blamed on drivers using hand-held cell phones are down 47%. there was a drop in injuries attributed to drivers using cell phones. a candy importer in southern california is recalling an item that has elevated levels of lead. the company comes from pakistan in jars. it could cause health problems for children. an analysis found lead levels above the legal limit in california so the company is

a number of detainees released from guantanamo bay resumed illegal activities less than reported. the new report says less than 16% of former detainees have reoffended. this is in massachusetts where the family of a murder victim tried to attack the suspect in court. court officers managed to get the suspect out of the court

quickly. they arrested two members of the victim's family and removed the rest from the courtroom. the suspect was the murder victim's boyfriend. a trip to las vegas for international tourists took a scary turn. the vehicle burst into flames yesterday near the hoover dam. the driver smelled smoke and then saw the flames. he tried to put it out. they evacuated immediately. bus fire snarled traffic for hours. no one was hurt. the tour company is based out of southern california. drivers in ohio got a surprise. black ice. one by one they became victims of cars slipping and crashing into the guardrail. even into the side of the hill there. drivers nearly missed a news van and even a tractor-trailer. no serious injuries were

reported. salt prevented more accidents. a snowmobiler in utah survived an avalanche. a friend of him captured it on video. he almost always wears an avalanche beacon, didn't have one on this particular run. look at the snow coming down. friends say if he had, he would have kept his head above the snow. >> he didn't have one on, so he's always got one on, but just supposed to be a quick and easy ride and that's when it always happens. >> the girlfriend shot the video as people searched for him. 23 minutes later a rescuer hit his helmet with a shovel. there he is. within two minutes his head was out of the snow. 10 minutes to dig him completely out. his only injury was a banged up knee. >> unbelievable. crazy stuff. >> makes you want to go skiing,

doesn't it? >> i'm going this weekend. >> wear one of those safety devices. >> i just came back. scattered light showers around the bay area this morning. a weak cold front sliding through. and that's touching off some showers. maybe more importantly, the winds kicking up outside today. we are seeing gusts at sfo of 44 miles per hour. temperatures right now not too bad. we have some 40s and 50s but i'll tell you what, it is not going to get much warmer nan this throughout the day today as we have a very cold air mass settling down overhead. not only here but around the state. chance of showers into the sacramento valley. heading to the high country winter weather advisories 7" of snow above 7,000 feet so more snow there and then drying out, temperatures warming up. this morning, a few showers on tap for the bay area. the winds will be kicking up. wind advisories at noon through
