cost cutting move shall the indianapolis colts will send the cost cutting move shall the indianapolis colts will send the star quarterback packing. captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for wednesday, march 7, 2012. good morning everybody. good to be with you. i'm terrell brown. it is the morning after super tuesday and the one thing we know for sure, the slug-fest for the republican presidential nomination won't be over any time soon. they were toe to toe battles. no knockout punch. but mitt romney was the winner in six states. romney pulled out a come from behind victory in the hotly contested state of ohio. romney also won in massachusetts where he was elected governor in 2002 and he won in the neighboring state of vermont. romney took the vote in virginia where his only competition on the ballot was ron paul. he scored victories in caucuses in idaho and in alaska, adding to his lead in delegates.
4:02 am
rick santorum won for the first time in a month in republican strongholds of oklahoma and tennessee. santorum was also the winner of north dakota's caucuses. and newt gingrich won in his home state of georgia. tyler suiters is in washington with more. tyler, good morning to you. >> good morning to you. yes mitt romney won the most states and the most delegates on super tuesday. but for these candidates, victory is clearly in the eye of the beholder. mitt romney squeaked out a victory in ohio. he fought a tough battle with rick santorum to take the critical swing state. we're counting up the delegates for the convention and it looks good. we're counting down the days until november and that looks even better. >> with victories in five other states, he's already talking like the gop nominee. >> as president i will get our economy back on track and get our citizens back to work. unlike president obama, i actually have the experience to deliver on that promise.
4:03 am
>> evangelical voters helped rick santorum finish on top in tennessee and oklahoma. he also put north dakota in his win column. >> we have won in the west, the midwest and the south and we're ready to win across this country. >> the candidates will divide up the super tuesday delegates. they were chasing the magic number to clinch the nomination, 1144. mitt romney leads. santorum's camp wants to frame this as a two-man contest with romney. saying he would rally behind him if newt gingrich calls it quits. last night gingrich easily won georgia. the state he represented in congress. the former speaker says he's not dropping out. >> i'm the tortoise. i take one step at a time. >> and ron paul is slowly collecting delegates in caucus states. >> we're on the right track. so make sure they hear our message all the way to d.c. >> paul still hasn't pulled off a victory but says he's going all the way to the convention.
4:04 am
next up is the kansas caucus on saturday. that's a state where rick santorum could do especially well given the number of conservative and evangelical voters. terrell. >> tyler suiters in washington for us. thank you. so much attention is paid to ohio because no republican presidential candidate has ever won the general election without winning ohio. exit polls show there is not a lot enthusiasm for romney or santorum. more than half of those who voted for romney said they had reservations about him as a candidate or simply disliked the other candidates. it was the same for santorum supporters. 44% were concerned with him as a candidate. cbs news chief washington correspondent, bob schieffer has more. >> whatever else you can say about super tuesday, what it seems to underline is that this is a republican party that has not yet settled on who it wants to be its nominee. in fact, you could also argue that it is a party that really
4:05 am
is just not very excited about any of the people who are in the race right now. for example, in virginia where mitt romney won, the only other person on the ballot was ron paul and ron paul got 40-something percent of the vote in virginia. that means, there are some 40 some odd percent of the people in virginia that are not happy about the idea of mitt romney being their candidate. in georgia and in tennessee where newt gingrich and where rick santorum won, 40% in both of those states said that mitt romney was simply not conservative enough for them. romney did win his home state, which is kind of a gimme. he won vermont, which is the neighboring state. this was a night when everybody got some wins. newt gingrich will go on now. he says he'll try to use his win in georgia to give him momentum into alabama and mississippi,
4:06 am
which will be the next places where there will be contests. santorum, obviously, is going nowhere. ron paul is going nowhere. so we've got all four candidates still in the race, nobody showing any sign of leaving, and as of right now, there does not seem to be a great deal for want of a better word, excitement right now about any of them. i'm bob schieffer, cbs news in new york. also in politics, joe the plumber is now known as the republican candidate for congress. you may remember him. samuel wurzelbacher gained notoriety in 2008 for expressing his tax concerns to then candidate barack obama. he won the gop nomination in ohio's ninth congressional district. he'll face marge kaptur. she scored a victory against dennis kucinich. to iran's nuclear program. republican presidential

4:08 am
and prevent that country from building a nuclear weapon. >> we have a window of opportunity where it can be resolved diplomatically. that's not just my view, it's the view of the top intelligence officials and top israeli intelligence officials. >> and he took aim at the republican candidates whom he called too casual about war with iran. >> when i see some of these folks who have a lot of bluster and big talk and you ask them specifically what they would do, it turns out they repeat the things that we've been doing over the last three years. >> he also said u.s. military action against a regime of syrian president bashar assad would be a mistake. the president's aides say it's a coincidence that he held his news conference on super tuesday as voters in ten states select a gop candidate. rising gas prices were also mentioned at the conference. the president looking at quick solutions such as opening bottlenecks in the supply chain.
4:09 am
>> i want gas prices lower because they hurt families. >> he took a question from cbs' norah o'donnell that mitt romney leveled against him on the campaign trail. >> what would you like to say to mr. romney? >> good luck tonight. >> the president will be back on the road wednesday in north carolina talking about his economic plans. randall pinkston, cbs news, washington. take a quick break. coming up on the morning news on this wednesday, tablet talk. the new ipad gets a big unveiling this morning. we'll check out some of the bells and whistles. this is the "cbs morning news." ms. this is the "cbs morning news." makeup out there. l but one is so clever that your skin looks better even after you take it off. neutrogena® healthy skin liquid makeup. 98% saw improved skin. does your makeup do that? neutrogena® cosmetics. that's why we make ocean spray 100% juice. it has plenty of natural goodness but there's no added sugar.
