charging into a woman's home. >> high technology of course is always vulnerable. >> it is the largest solar storm in five years. how the flares could disrupt everything from gps services to airline flights. and we are starting out in the deep freeze in some parts of the bay area but we are going to see a major warmup. more on that in a moment. >> and we have a full freeway closure in menlo park. details of the morning commute coming up. thanks. good morning, everybody. it is thursday, the weekend is getting close. march 8. i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm grace lee. it is 4:30. and new this mornings we have another fatal pit bull shooting involving pacifica police. now, police are responding to a call of a loose dog in a home in the linda mar area. the pit bull was attack the woman's smaller corgi. then police say that the pit bull went at an officer while he shot the pit bull once killing it. the corgi is recovering. last august pacifica police shot and killed another pit bull that had killed its

pregnant owner, then got out of its yard heading toward police and paramedics treating the victim. the dog was then shot. oakland police are investigating their 24th homicide of the year. a man was shot and killed last night on tenth avenue. one person being questioned right now. but no one has been arrested. no word on a possible motive. there is a police manhunt in solano county for the gunman who killed a bay area teenager. the teen was one of two men killed in fairfield yesterday. one victim 18 years old is from east palo alto. the other is 24. and is from fairfield. police say both were shot near the parkway garden condominium complex. witnesses saw the suspect running away from the area carrying a black handgun. the motive for that shooting is unclear. the reward is now more than $22,000 to help catch whoever vandalized a richmond school. last night, the west contra costa school board agreed to

match a $10,000 reward offered by the police. vandals caused nearly a million dollars worth of damage to the elementary school last month. part of the building was flooded by a broken water valve. >> young people know there are consequences and we are doing what we can to make a safe environment. >> that school was scheduled to open in just a few weeks. that will now be delayed for about two months as they clean up and repair everything. investigatorses believe adults may have been responsible because some of the damage from one of the broken damaged windows -- -- one of the windows that was broken was higher so they think it might have been an adult. an "occupy oakland" protestor is being arrested. cesar aguirre was arrested following an "occupy" protest last november but so far hasn't

been charge. the lawsuit seeks more than $6,600.00 from aguirre to cover repair costs. a slim majority of california voters says that they would support the tax plan governor brown is pushing on the november ballot to raise the sales and income taxes on rich californians. a public policy institute survey finds 52% of likely voters would support that. 40% would vote no. 8% are undecided. the state of california will conduct an audit of the city of san jose's finances. the move approved yesterday by the joint legislative audit committee. several silicon valley lawmakers requested the audit amid controversy every controversy over the city's worker pension system. unions accuse the mayor of using inflated cost projections to gain support for a pension reform measure that the city voters will face in june.

mayor reed says the audit is fine as long as it's not politically slanted. 4:33. chilly overnight. >> it was. warm weather is about to come our way. chilly temperatures developing outside as an offshore wind cleared out the skies and dried out the atmosphere so temperatures dropping like a rock. many numbers down into the 30s. 39 in concord, 39 in oakland, 41 san jose, 33 santa rosa. these temperatures are expected to fall more so over the next hour and a half. freeze warnings in the valleys, temperatures in the wind sheltered locations in the mid- 20s and lower 30s so protect your plants and people. it's going to be cold this morning but by the afternoon,

what a contrast, indeed. 73 the expected high in santa rosa, 70 san jose, 68 oakland, 65 san francisco. these next couple of days looking great. offshore wind continues through tomorrow. by saturday we catch more of a sea breeze, more clouds on the way. late in the day on sunday a chance of showers returns. that opens up the door for a lot more storms coming our way. that's a look at weather. here's elizabeth with traffic. >> thanks, lawrence. we're following some breaking news in berkeley. sounds like there's an apartment fire in the 2200 block of dwight way. we are sending news crews out to the scene. apparently flames were seen shooting from the roof, smoke was seen in the area and we're told that some residents of the apartment building are self- evacuating. 2275 dwight way. we have news crews on the way to the scene now. elsewhere, towards the full freeway closure in menlo park, southbound 101 all lanes are blocked between willow and marsh and at the bay bridge toll plaza, traffic so far nice and light into san francisco. that's a check of traffic. back to you.

>> thank you. we have more tire slashings in palo alto. police say that they received four new reports of damage on monday. and three of the cars affected were on east meadow drive in the same area where the more than 50 cars had tires slashed early sunday morning. so far police don't have any suspects. they are asking for the public's help with any leads. prosecutors are going to recommend a one-year sentence for a man who pleaded guilty to a hit-and-run in san francisco. it is part of a plea deal for andrew vargas who admitted he was drunk when he drove into a 9-year-old boy. surveillance video shows vargas' second collision that same night with a taxicab. and there could be a third speed freak killer still out there. speaking out from death row, wesley shermantine sent a letter to our cbs affiliate in sacramento and he claims that

his former friend loren herzog murdered 72 people with the help of another man who is still walking the streets. shermantine also said herzog is responsible for a notorious cold case murder. the shooting death of a utah hunter in 1994. 4:37 now. a tribute is planned today for a central valley murder victim on what would have been her 11th birthday. sandra cantu of tracy was kidnapped, drugged and killed and then stuffed into a suitcase almost two years ago. a neighbor, 30-year-old melissa huckaby pleaded guilty to the crime. she was sentenced to live in prison without parole. today the tribute features free activities for children throughout the city. social media experiment aimed to catch a warlord. joseph kony is the man wanted by the international criminal court kidnapping children in africa for 26 years forcing them into his army and then turning them into sex slaves. now a half hour documentary

called kony2012 is drawing worldwide attention in an effort to catch him. >> we are living in a new world, facebook world in which 750 million people share ideas, it's a global community bigger than us. joseph kony was committing crimes for 20 years. and no one cared. we care. >> one goal of the film is to keep u.s. military advisors in africa trying to track down kony. senator john mccain says that the u.s. should launch air strikes in order to stop the violence in syria. the arizona republican says president obama needs to do something to remove syrian president bashar assad from power. defense secretary leon panetta says now is the know the time for such a move although the president has asked the pentagon for a preliminary review of military options. the united nations says 7500 people have been killed since assad's government began

back now at 4:41. if a recall effort against oakland mayor jean quan makes the ballot, she already has a high-profile opponent her other city council president. >> i don't think that we have the luxury of continuing this way. so -- >> reporter: so you would run for mayor if there is a recall? >> yes, if there is a recall i am running. >> ignacio de la fuente has long been at odds with the mayor over public safety issues and he called for a no- confidence vote in reaction to her handling of the "occupy" protest. recall petitioners have until july to gather signatures they need. 4:42 now. all the republican presidential hopefuls are vowing to stay in the race even the ones who didn't have a strong showing on super tuesday. but as tyler suiters reports, one candidate believes an upcoming primary will nar rote field. reporter: rick santorum told supporters in jackson, mississippi, next week's primary could be a game changer. >> if we win mississippi, this will be a two-person race.

>> reporter: santorum is battling with newt gingrich to win over conservative voters and emerge as mitt romney's lone rival. the former pennsylvania senator has consistently split that base with gingrich allowing romney to win in key states like michigan and ohio. but santorum is stopping short of calling for gingrich to drop out of the race. >> i'm not saying i don't want him to get out. if he wants to get out i'm all for it. >> reporter: newt gingrich says that won't happen. >> we are staying in this race because i believe that it's going to be impossible for a moderate to win the general election. >> reporter: but mitt romney is pulling away from his competition. cbs news now estimates he has 391 delegates more than all of his challengers combined. >> i'm going to get this nomination. >> reporter: the former massachusetts governor will campaign in mississippi today and he is about to start airing tv commercials in alabama. newt gingrich and rick santorum have a strong following in the south and will look for voters there to give them some

momentum. >> thank you. >> reporter: but romney has the organization and the money to stay competitive if the primary battle drags on. his campaign just announced it raised $11.5 million in february, its second best month so far. tyler suiters, cbs news, washington. this is for you toyota owners. your vehicle may be among nearly 700,000 being recalled for various reasons. the recalls include tacoma trucks made during the 2005 through 2009 model years, camry sedans made during the 2009 model year also being recalled, so are crossovers made during the 2009 through 2011 years. she won the lottery but is still collecting welfare. and people in michigan aren't happy about it. amanda clayton won a million dollars in michigan's lottery last october. she bought a new house, went and bought a new car with her winnings. she is also collecting more than $200 a month in food statutes. the single mother of two says she is still struggling.

n in a california school district suspects that one of its teachers may be moonlighting as a porn star. it is suspected that the woman in the film is an 8th grade science teacher from an oxnard intermediate school. the school superintendent says no students were involved and it is not a courtroomal case but he says the education code says teachers must live up to certain standards. >> if we can determine that, number one, this teacher did participate in this, and we can conclude that there is some type of moral terpitude violation that we could go up to discipline up to including termination. the teach core not be reached for comment. she is on add -- the teacher could not be re-opened for

comment. she is on administrative leave. a woman wants her son's teacher to be disciplined. she hung a sign around his neck about the child missing a test last week. thomas had a note from his doctor confirming he was sick so he missed the test. now he has a note from his former teacher an apology for making him wear the sign. a lot of new features but has the same name. apple unveiled what just might be the most popular toy in the world. >> everybody has been wondering who will come out with a product that's more amazing than the ipad 2. well, stop wondering. we are. >> there you go. apple calls it simply the new ipad. the 4-g-enabled tablet is much faster than the ipad 2 and has a better camera, hd video recording and voice dictation. but the biggest difference is

to the coastline this morning but because of that clear air here and the offshore winds it's very dry so the temperatures are falling off. some freeze warnings showing up in some of the valleys right now. in the meantime though that ridge continuing to build in overhead. we are in for a couple of fantastic days weather-wise. the next few just spectacular as high pressure holds on. we have big changes coming. sunny, warm today. then major changes over the weekend. looks like we could see a return to some rain maybe more importantly that is going to open the door for what looks like some spectacular weather. how about a rainbow? yeah. looking good out there. but we are going to see lots of sunshine around the bay area today. and freeze warnings they are up in the north and the south bay valleys. we could barely see those temperatures drop down tonight mid-20s in some spots in some of the wind sheltered areas, also in the lower 30s. but toward the afternoon what a day it's going to be. lots of 60s into the central valley. 60 yosemite today.

high pressure continuing to build in. great weather, clear, cold, lots of sunshine by the afternoon and very warm temperatures. how about 60s and 70s in the south bay today? about 69 degrees in milpitas. 67 in palo alto, 62 in pacifica. 60s and 70s into the east bay and also inside the bay offshore winds will crank those numbers up to 69 in oakland. about 65 in san francisco. and 73 degrees one of the warm spots in santa rosa. next couple of days spectacular. high pressure holding on but this weekend, more of a sea breeze kicking in on saturday. then those clouds gather maybe a chance of rain returning late in the day on sunday. i think more importantly, that opens the door a series of storms. after that we could see 10 days of off and on rainfall. too early to call it the march miracle but definitely some march madness. i'm excited because we're running about 20 to 30% of norma. >> two weeks of that. >> could be on and off. >> not the storm door. >> i hope so. >> swing it open! >> lawrence is all about the storm door. >> all right.

thanks, guys. let's go out to berkeley, because this sounds like this fire could be a pretty big one. apparently a lot of flames are shooting from the roof of this apartment building. it is on dwight. berkeley fire crews told us they are swamped so it's a little difficult to get information. dwight way and fulton street, possible closures. a three-story apparently building, flames shooting from the roof and the top floor. not sure about injuries but we have a news crew on the way to the scene now. so we are hoping to bring you some live pictures very, very shortly. in the meantime, we also have another fire burning. this is a smaller brush fire. this should be cleared here shortly. northbound highway 85 by blossom hill road. apparently the right lane of highway 58 is shut down so fire crews can completely clear the scene. that's a more minor issue in san jose. overall the bridges look good all across the bay area. here's live look at one of our "timesaver traffic" cameras. this is the san mateo bridge. and the right side of your

screen is the commute direction, westbound 92. drive time 13 minutes out of hayward to foster city so that's quiet as well as the nimitz 880 through oakland. this looks great all the way past the coliseum up towards the downtown oakland exit. you should have no delay to your drive time. 15 minutes between 238 and the maze. and the golden gate bridge is moving fine. everything actually looks good all the way through marin county into san francisco. that's a check of traffic. back to you guys. >> thank you. today bay area women will celebrate international women's day with a walk across the golden gate bridge. it is aimed to highlight the roles that women play in building peace in war-torn countries and it's models after a walk two years ago on a bridge connecting rwanda and the congo. today there will be similar walks across bridges all over the world. participation is free although donations are accepted. the auto racetrack near sonoma will have a new name. it's been infineon raceway for 10 years. but the current infineon executives i guess aren't too

excited about racing as their predecessors so they are letting nair naming rights deal expire after that 10 years and some $34 million. racetrack officials are now looking for a new sponsor. tonight men's college hoops stanford against cal. pac-12 tournament at ucla. the winner advances to the conference semifinals and also tonight san jose state facing nevada at the western athletic conference tournament in las vegas. st. mary's is already in the big dance. and a rare sight in the san francisco bay. >> yeah. a mother gray whale and calf were spotted in the water yesterday. the noaa is telling boaters to steer clear of them. witnesses report seeing a small boat speeding to get up close to see them. that is considered harassment. >> that could result in the
