middle of the night by a police officer knocking on his door, demanding changes in a story posted online. that's the latest incident in a highly charged story that began with a beating death of a berkeley man. don knapp explains what happened. >> reporter: on february 18th, berkeley resident peter cukor made a call to police about a suspicious man near his garage. a berkeley officer was going to respond, but was told not to. an occupy demonstration was preparing in oakland. 14 minutes later, cukor's wife called 911, saying the man was beating her husband, as it turned out, fatally. thursday, community members vented frustration at a meeting organized by two berkeley city council members. the police chief said internet bloggers ran with a story that was not entirely accurate. >> we put out information, didn't put it out quickly enough, and so we got behind

that. that's unfortunate, because it leaves people with the belief that somehow this crime wouldn't have happened but for this. this discussion about occupy, it's a red herring. >> reporter: bay area news group reporter doug oakley covered the story and wrote a story saying the chief apologized for the beating death of cukor. the chief's response was extreme. the police sent an officer to the reporter's door, demanding a correction. >> might have happened in the '50s in the south or some other country where reporters aren't protected as here. >> reporter: the bay area news group's story says it isn't about the story changes, it's about sending an armed police officer to a reporter's home. ordering a police officer to a journalist's home in the middle of the night to demand changes to a story is an attempt at censorship by intel dation, he said. it definitely crossed the line. the chief told cbs 5 he was tired and frustrated, trying to

get out what he says are the facts, but he went about it all wrong. >> and putting myself out there just to say this is completely my fault, i apologize to mr. oakley, falling on my sword because i was wrong and i put him in an awkward position and i shouldn't have done it. >> reporter: reporter oakley told cbs 5 he's a professional and he would have made any needed correction, but he said he did not need to be awakened in the middle of the night to do it. now, the city of berkeley's interim city manager has also apologized, saying there was no justification for police contacting a reporter the way they did. >> you don't hear about that very much, do you? >> reporter: i don't think it's happened any time i can recall around here. >> don, thank you much. well, hayward investigators are looking into two early morning fires that broke out within two hours of each other. the first was reported around 3:45 this morning at a home on a street near highway 880. the second broke out at a quarter to 6:00 at a plastics warehouse about a mile away. the fast-moving warehouse fire gutted the building, but crews were able to contain the flames before they reached any of the

other businesses in the strip mall. they did have to close for the day. >> our main objective is to make sure we don't lose any more businesses than we have to, so we did have to break into the businesses and make sure there was no fire extension. >> crews spent the rest of the morning putting out hot spots on the roof. businesses at the strip mall are expected to reopen tomorrow. in the earlier fire, a 60-year-old man came home from work to find flames coming out of his house. he ran inside to rescue his 92-year-old mother. both were rushed to the hospital with burns. the woman is listed in critical condition. her son in serious condition. the fire caused about $100,000 in damage. well, his words are loved by some and hated by others. today, louis farrakhan spoke at uc berkeley, bringing out supporters and protesters. anne makovec on the polarizing political figure's visit.

>> some on this campus would say you shouldn't hear what i have to say, when the world listens to what farrakhan has to say? >> reporter: this is video from inside wheeler hall where louis farrakhan addressed a full house. he's a long-time african american leader, both praised and criticized for his political views and outspoken style. while he's clearly beloved-- >> always has a positive message. >> the things he has to say really a lot of it makes sense and it's the truth. >> reporter: his presence is causing controversy. >> the negative impact on the community comes from his constant and consistent and strong, hateful remarks, discriminatory remarks, antisemitic, homophobic and material remarks. >> reporter: this student says he supports farrakhan's first amendment rights, but has concerns about comments made about gay people, white people and jews. >> him saying these remarks

about jews controlling the government, controlling the media, it makes me feel like history could repeat itself. >> reporter: several student groups circulated a petition, calling farrakhan's presence an insult to diversity on campus. >> they are so fearful that you're going to hear a word that will break the chain off of your minds. >> people have different interpretations. i think what you have to do is take what's good out of what everyone says and what you can't relate to, leave that alone, but respect their right to say it. >> reporter: the african black coalition conference runs through sunday here at uc berkeley. anne makovec, cbs 5. other bay area headlines, san francisco police are investigating a deadly shooting. officers found a victim in a car in the mission district at 23rd and shockwell last night. police say the car at some point hit another vehicle. it's unclear if that provoked the shooting or if the suspect

was shot. the victim was shot while driving and then hit the other car. a san mateo man is under arrest after undercover police busted this illegal pot-growing operation. investigators found more than 500 marijuana plants inside a home on 31st avenue by west hills dale boulevard on thursday. total street value of the marijuana, about $400,000. the price tag for the san francisco 49ers new home in santa clara is going up, but there's actually good news for taxpayers. the san jose mercury news reports it will cost $1.2 billion for the new stadium. meanwhile, the public cost is expected to go down because sales for expensive seat packages are stronger than anticipated. the stadium is set to open in two years. it's a long journey to get a single message across. why people in the bay area started a 3000-mile walk today. io . speaking of long journeys, the arduous road to get a 340-ton rock to its final destination.

the walk kicked off at the , with a rally . four students began their cross-country walk today in support of the dream act. the walk kicked off at the golden gate bridge with a rally in support of the students and their mission. the dream act would give undocumented students who have spent most of their lives in the u.s. permanent residency, while they complete their education or military service. many have never been to the countries of their birth. >> we are for all intents and purposes americans, just not on paper. and we just want the opportunity to, to show this great nation that we deserve and definitely belong here. >> the students will walk across 13 states in hundreds of communities to raise awareness and support for the dream act. the walk will end in washington, dc in november. supporters of the dream act have tried unsuccessfully to pass legislation for more than a

decade. well, it took a week and a half, but a massive rock is finally home tonight. the 340-ton boulder garnered rockstar treatment on its way to the l.a. county museum of art. the extensive and arduous effort to get it done. >> reporter: greeted with cheers and the song "we will rock you" -- n]♪ >> reporter: this 340-ton rockstar finished its 105-mile journey from a rock quarry in riverside county to the los angeles countiy museum of art in the early morning hours, but that didn't stop the groupies, some of which had followed the rock for days. >> how long have you been following the rock? >> three days. >> three days? >> yeah. >> have you slept? >> yes. >> okay. >> reporter: equipped with cameras and rocco oh. >> it's really rock, hence the rock, rock candy, and i will say

tonight. we're setting up for a wet stretch across the bay area. temperatures in the upper 30s, low to mid-40s, depending on where you are. then for tomorrow we are putting in our first chance of rain. it's going to be our first wet, rainy day, next week in fact. temperatures tomorrow, mostly in the 50s. we could squeeze out a couple 60s, but temperatures will feel cooler tomorrow than we saw today. temperatures today were already 10 degrees cooler than what we saw yesterday. so all those dry, mild weather we saw with the high pressure system that was here, that high pressure is now moving farther east and we've got a low setting up over the bay area. we'll time it out for you using future cast. tomorrow morning, 10:00 in the morning, we'll start to see showers in the north bay, then moving farther south. then tomorrow throughout the day, unsettled, so we could see sprinkles throughout the day.

monday evening commute, unsettled. then another storm system setting up for tuesday, a bigger one. then another system setting up for thursday, friday. you get the idea. we are in for a long stretch of wet weather. pinpoint forecast, overnight lows for tonight, mostly in the 40s across the bay area. 43 in concord, 44 in san rafael, 40 in places like santa rosa. temperatures tomorrow, mostly in the 50s, warming things up a bit. we could squeeze out a couple of 60s. 60 in concord. 59 in oakland and fremont. let's check the forecast over the next several days. we've got rain showers just about every day you can see. monday, a good chance of rain. then tuesday, looks like it could be one of our biggest storm systems moving through, also pretty heavy southerly winds we could see with that system. wednesday, thursday, friday, the wet weather could continue into next weekend and even the early portion of next week. of course it's a little too hard to forecast that far into the

>> not a bad debut, homer and two runs batted. a's beat the reds 6-3. is it too soon to say the a's may have signed an all-star? after the game, brandon mccarthy tweeted -- giants, 6th inning, aubrey huff's second homer of the spring. angels win 9-5, but the other half of the giants beat the brewers 13-3. the cal women beat stanford back in january of 2009. since then, the cardinal have not lost a conference game, but the bears were hoping to end that streak today in the pac-12 championship. what a nice big sister, telling her everything's fine, shake it off, and she did just that. hits the hook shot, finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

stanford jumped out to an early double-digit lead, but cal fought back. the bears would cut it to 6 at the half. with the shot clock winding down, this one from nba range, hit twog more from downtown later in the half s there anything she can't do? in the open court, she splits the two cal defenders for the layup. 29 points, 12 rebounds for the two-time pac-12 player of the year. stanford beats cal 77-62. they will be a number 1 seed in the ncaa tournament, while the bears are expected to get an at-large bid. >> we're going streaking! the cardinal have now won six straight conference tournaments, 78 straight conference games, and are riding a 28-game winning streak this season. on the men's side, montgomery feels his men have done enough to win a spot in the tournament, but after losing in the pac-12 semifinals, they will

have to sweat it out on selection sunday. brown put the exclamation point on colorado's win last night with a huge wind mill jam. he was at it again today in the championship game. brown hammers home colorado's only field goal in the final 9 minutes. buffaloes hang on to beat arizona 53-51. they win four games in four days to get a spot in the big dance. pat night might not be crazy about his team's seniors, but they want to spend more time with him. lamar has won six straight games since knight's infamous post game rant. >> we've got the worst group of seniors right now that i've ever been associated with. >> i feel sorry for this school. i mean, these kids are stealing money by being on scholarship. >> senior guard mike james poured in 26 points, earning every penny today. they earned a spot in the tournament. it's the first time knight has ever taken his team to the tourney as a head coach.

third round at the cadillac championship, golf's best continue to tame the blue monster. mcilroy chips in on the second for a birdie. new number one player in the world shot a 65, but is 8 strokes back. tiger woods' tee shot went into the water on the 9th, but chips in from the bottom of the hill to save par. tiger shot a 68, but also 8 strokes off the lead, as everyone continues to chase bubba watson. his approach on 14 nearly rolls in. he tapped in for birdie. watson sits atop the leadership at 17 under. he'll take a 3-shot lead into the final round. of course don't ever count tiger out. he shot a 62 last week, 9 strokes back. the neat thing about bubba watson, he's never had a swing coach, only his dad. >> that's amazing. >> amazing. his dad passed away, but he learned from his dad at the young age of 10 and that's all he needed. >> my gosh. cool name. >> he does.
