why his job still remains in jeopardy. good morning, everybody. it is tuesday, it is march 13. it is wet outside. i'm frank mallicoat. >> it certainly is. i'm grace lee. it is 4:30. we get a round of storms we have been talking about for details now kind of like a car wash for me because my car was so muddy from the mountains. >> heavy drizzle and light showers. the heaviest rainfall still to come. that cold front is going to be a slow mover. high-def doppler radar is picking up on some of the moisture. it's working its way down the bay area. scattered showers in along the peninsula spreading into the east bay but the heaviest amount of rain north of santa rosa. this is going to be a really slow mover. it will take the better part of the day to get main cold front into the bay area. so heaviest rain is yet to

come. we'll see strong gusty winds ahead of the system. a wet wild rest of the week as the series of storms will continue to bring us rain off and off through the weekend. temperatures in the 50s and 60s, heavy rain today and tomorrow as that cold front moves through. thursday showers, more showers continuing on friday. very cold system dives in over the weekend, snow levels down to 1500 feet. and the possibility of some lightning on saturday and sunday too. that's a look at weather. let's check the roads with elizabeth. a traffic alert in san bruno at 3 a.m. a big rig jackknifed and they closed the connector ramp from southbound 280 to eastbound 380. if you have flight plans to get over to sfo, 280 not the best route. that connector ramp southbound 280 to eastbound 380 is

completely closed this morning since 3 a.m., due to the jackknifed big rig. more on that in just a minute. first the bay bridge toll plaza, they have a high wind advisory in effect on several bridges this morning. so those gusts are strong ahead of this morning's storm. you can really feel it on the upper deck. all right. elsewhere, san mateo bridge, there's also a wind advisory there and a quick check of the south bay where 280 traffic so far is very light out of downtown san jose. i mentioned that jackknifed big rig. gil diaz is live at the scene. what's going on. >> reporter: behind me, you can see chp blocked 280 south connector to 380 east. we don't know when it will reopen but it is because there is a big rig blocking somewhere on the 380 east near the tanforan shopping mall. the big rig isn't weather- related it happened to just jackknife there. the truck is empty. but part of it is on the

is suspected of killing 16 civilians mostly women and children. at this point we don't know if anyone was wounded or killed. the delegation includes two of afghan president's hamid karzai's brothers and senior security officials. [ chanting ] >> reporter: now, as you can see, this incident is us causing an uproar among students in eastern afghanistan. today students shouted angry anti-american slogans and against the soldier who killed civilians, saying death to the soldier and death to americans. this is the first significant response to the tragedy. president obama extended his condolences to the families of the victims but did say that this incident would not speed up plans to pull out u.s. troops in afghanistan. >> obviously, what happened this weekend is absolutely heartbreaking and tragic. i expressed directly to president karzai how the

american people feel anytime innocent civilians, especially children are killed and for it to happen in this kind of terrible way. i think we all are concerned about it. >> reporter: president obama says there's still a lot at stake and wants to ensure the removal of u.s. troops is done in a responsible way. as for the soldier in question, we're learning new information this morning. we have learned the suspect is an infantry sniper in his mid- 30s with a wife and children. he is trained to shoot and kill from more than 800 yards away and he suffered a traumatic brain injury from iraq in his vehicle during his last deployment in iraq. he was found fit for duty after treatment. military leaders say he was based out of fort lewis in washington state and helped train the local villagers to fend for themselves. now the u.s. military says the u.s. soldier could face the death penalty. back to you. >> thank you. fairfield police are investigating their third homicide in less than a week. the victim was a 47-year-old man who was shot in the front

of a home on the 1100 block of hayes street last night. he died after being flown to a trauma center. police don't have any suspects at this time. they don't think the killings are gang-related. it's now 4:36. and there is no more trial for mirkarimi. the san francisco sheriff made a surprise plea dealend those proceedings. -- to end those proceedings. he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charge of false imprisonment. prosecutors then dropped three other misdemeanor charges related to alleged domestic violence involving his wife. mayor ed lee says he is reviewing his options, which could include suspending the sheriff. >> the plea that i shall take on the charge doesn't inhibit me legally, constitutionally, from being sheriff. >> you know, amongst the earlier charges you can kind of separate in the past the issues of domestic violence as well as the function of the office there was kind of a little separation. in this case, i'm not sure about that separation. >> mirkarimi is still barred

from contacting his wife until the family court changes that. mirkarimi will be sentenced on monday. he has agreed to three years' probation, one year of counseling, and he has to take parenting classes and pay a $590 fine and will also be performing community service work. and we have a "speed freak" killer who says there is another burial site with the remains of murder victims, wesley shermantine sent another letter to our sister station in sacramento. he says there is at least one person buried in a linden orchard blocking to fellow killer loren herzog. he also says he has doubts that he will ever get money promised to hin by bounty hunter leonard padilla. shermantine says he is holding the best for last suggesting that he has not revealed all of his secrets just yet. state investigators are blasting pg&e for poor recordkeeping on its natural gas pipeline. staff with the public utilities commission issuing a report

yesterday saying the records are disorganized and hard to access. they are now looking into whether the lapses violate a state and federal law. they are also examining whether the problem contributed to the catastrophic rupture in san bruno in september of 2010. meanwhile the city of san bruno must now decide how to use $70 million from pg&e. it's a settlement for pain and suffering caused by the pipeline disaster that killed eight people, wiped out dozens of homes. the mayor says the deal emerged after long intense negotiations with the utility. the payment will come out of shareholder pockets not the ratepayers. >> this should help the people who lost their homes. >> i'd like to see some sort of memorial put up, small, not anything too ostentacious, maybe expand the park. >> the settlement is in addition to the $50 million pg&e already pledged to help rebuild that neighborhood. the mother of a 5-year-old

autistic boy was hospitalized last night possibly because of a teacher who is accused of abusing schoolchildren. alexia bogdis pled not guilty to charges that she abused two autistic students at roosevelt elementary school. the mother tells the bay area news group that she learned of possible abuse from a teacher's aide and then from redwood city police. the mother beliefs her son was hospitalized for dehydration and vomiting because bogdis withheld food and water from him as punishments. four uc-berkeley students and professor are set to be arraigned later this month in connection with an "occupy" protest on campus. and they are among 39 people arrested during a demonstration november 9. the five were charged last week with resisting arrest. some face charges of blocking right of way and failing to disperse. all eyes on the south today with a new round of presidential primaries. today's biggest republican contests are in alabama and

mississippi. the latest american research group poll showing that mitt romney has a narrow edge over newt gingrich down in mississippi and in alabama gingrich leads romney, rick santorum third in both states. ron paul hasn't campaigned in either state a distant fourth in each. caucuses will be held in hawaii and american samoa. cbs news/new york times poll suggests rising gas prices are lowering president obama's popularity. his approval rating has dropped to 41%. it's the lowest it's ever been and his edge over republican challengers has narrowed, as well. he leads romney by just 2%. santorum only by 3. he still leads paul and gingrich by double digits. coming up, a new yorker taking a bite out of the apple. >> i guess so. his lawsuit over the problems with siri coming up. >> the bizarre sight on the runway how a plane nearly tipped over. >> warning for pet owners in the east bay the new threat

international airport aftera ered off a taxiway right now, emergency crews are in atlanta's hartsfield international airport after a plane veered off a taxiway there. the faa says a maintenance person was moving the empty plane when there was a problem with the brakes and it rolled off the runway. the incident is not blocking other plane traffic at the airport. no one was hurt. there were no passengers on the plane at the time. family of a tourist killed by a bicyclist in san francisco wants mercy for him. they suggested that randolph eng become a bicycle safety advocate instead of a prisoner. back in you will, the 23-year- old ran a red light on the embarcadero and hit a victim. he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter. eng has been sentenced to three years' probation and 500 hours of community service. the latest business plan for high-speed rail here in california will be unveiled in the south bay tonight. the chairman of the high-speed

rail authority board is expected to have details of the plan that's coming out later this month. a state senate informational hearing starts at 7:00 at the mountain view center for the performing arts. bart is now a big step closer to becoming a true regionwide transit system. there was a ceremony at san jose city hall and it made it official yesterday. the vta is getting a $900 million grant to help build a bart extension from fremont to san jose's berryessa area. the bulk of the money for the project more than $1 billion is coming from santa clara county sales tax revenues. >> the real people we will always thank are the visionary voters of silicon valley who not once but twice in the boom times of 2000 and the bust times of 2008 said yes to their future with two-thirds votes to bring bart to silicon valley. you are the heroes. >> the heroes, wow! the bart extension to berryessa is expected to be done by 2016.

mark your calendars. the vta still plans to further extend the line to downtown san jose and santa clara and is already working on a funding plan. a new york man is suing apple because he is disappointed in his iphone 4s. his new phone. the issue is the voice- activated assistant called searry. the "wall street journal" claims apple's advertising is quote misleading and deceptive quote because it overstates siri's capabilities. apple has sold more than 37 million of the phones with siri since this past october. yahoo is suing facebook now. the lawsuit between the bay area tech giants is over patents. yahoo says facebook infringed on 10 patents including privacy controls and online advertising. it comes weeks before facebook's anticipate initial public offering. facebook calls the lawsuit puzzling and promises to fight it vigorously. and the new ipad all sold out, folks. in just five days they are

man was found unconscious santa cruz is recording its first surfing death in 17 years. deputies say a man was found unconscious yesterday at pleasure point. the victim was celebrating his 60th birthday according to a friend there. the last known surfing death in santa cruz back in november of 1995. a sunnyvale woman vacationing in hawaii died after being swept out to sea. police say 58-year-old sansan sheng was trying to cross a rain-swollen stream and slipped and fell in on saturday. her body was found four miles off the coast. she was traveling alone scheduled to attend a conference this week. it is now 449. livermore police are searching for two burglars who broke into

a pair of businesses. these surveillance pictures were released yesterday. they say the suspects stole computers, printers and electronics and got in by using a prying tool to open the doors on saturday night. so anyone with information is asked to call police. park visitors in the east bay are now being warned, watch out because there is a dive bombing owl. ken bastida took our mobile 5 camera and found it yesterday afternoon. so hikers are telling him that the bird has been dive bombing dogs walking by the canyon trail in the berkeley hills. >> one of the owls just came down and kind of clipped the dog right in the rear end. took off. made kind of a screeching sound. >> park rangers asked that dogs be kept on a leash in the area. the owl is nested in the same eucalyptus tree that a family of owls called home a few years ago. leave it to ken to find the owl. >> i have to tell you, there are scary. in new hampshire we had one

with a wingspan before 6 feet that used to have faceoffs with our cat scoop. >> they are very aggressive. >> they are. also, the weather very aggressive today. >> i guess so. >> the winter that never was is finally upon us. >> you know, usually it's that blackbirds around here that are always dive bombing you but owls, that's unusual. hey, folks, we have a slow- moving cold front making its way into the bay area that's going to take its time moving in. we are seeing light showers ahead of it now on the peninsula and parts of the east bay. hi-def doppler picking up on that but the main cold front still stuck in the north bay. it's going to be really slow. it's going to take the better part of the day for this to move down so we are expecting to see the heaviest amounts of rainfall with this one in the north bay to begin with. right now just north of santa rosa look at this line some very heavy rainfall being reported now just north of the santa rosa area and again this is just slowly sliding southward throughout the day today. it will take the better part of the day to work down through the rest of the bay area. light rain and wind to begin with, gusts over 40 miles an

hour. staying wet today, gusty winds continuing, more rainy days ahead as it looks like once this front moves by there is more in the pacific. beautiful looking cold front though. this more reminiscent of a february storm system as it moves by. bringing with it that strong gusty winds out ahead of the system. it's going to stall it looks like possibly over the central part of the bay and that's why it's going to pump in a lot of rainfall and moisture so a series of storms lining up in the gulf of alaska moving onshore toward the bay area throughout the next few days. here's the cold front. slow mover toward the afternoon. it takes until about 5:00, 6:00 before we start to see it over the central bay. then watch what happens. it's going to sit here overnight. that's going to pump in a tremendous amount of moisture here throughout the night tonight and into tomorrow morning. and then tomorrow it looks like it's slowly sagging through the rest of the bay area. rain totals impressive up to three isp of rainfall in the -- up to three inches of rainfall in the north bay, maybe up to 5" of rain.

deciding whether to let as pursue a ballpark in downtown san jose. well, the "san francisco chronicle" says that the two potential buyers would intend to keep the team in oakland. the 49ers have a new receiver. six-time pro bowler randy moss. he caught passes yesterday and then signed a one-year contract. he is 35, last played in the nfl in 2010. there he is highlighted. and team management hopes moss can help the offense stretch the field. the 9ers rank 29th in passing yards per game. that's exciting. >> he comes with a lot of baggage but he is a great talent and if he can just settle in, it would be a great pick. >> we'll be watching. and will the fourth time be the charm? let's hope so. after three trips to the final four the stanford women are poised to make another run. >> the number one seed in the fresno region, no surprise, it is the stanford cardinal and
