5:02 am
for about eight years there. they top the fine arts including music and over the centuries that actually have produced quite a few well-known artists and musicians. greta that's where he got his start he worked for a while on the dome of the cathedral in muni i think it's the fourth largest donor worked side by side doing merrill's when do those kind of murals kind of on your back happen the error that kind of thing. in this case part of it was the the dome is so large the region in the walls as well there. it's covered with murals so it's a real skill to be able to do the large scale murals and that's one thing that he learned.
5:03 am
he won a contest and the contest was that one of the prizes, to travel to mexico to restored churches he went with two other artists went to mexico instead in mexico for about seven years and he was in mexico city and worked on one of the buildings there in mexico city. they brought him north of town in northern mexico and it was there that he met my grandmother. that eventually up in the southern california. he had to flee mexico during the mexican revolution because at the time pancho villa had ordered all foreigners out of northern mexico off so he had to leave with his wife and his
5:04 am
baby daughter who also later became an artist. and he came up to san francisco to work on the pan pacific exploration exploration of and any found a home and send info so they worked at the pan pacific exposition for over a year and its many beautiful paintings for the california building at the exposition. were going to see some of those and a bit after the break but basically this is the stations at the san affiliation that's one of the things that we will see and then talking about some paintings that he did for the pan pacific exposition and then of course st. peter and paul beautiful church. we're going to take a short break and will be back with more and this time bring

5:07 am
going to look at a few of those are it works that his grandfather did and mainly these are works that they did this stations across admission send info. terry give us a setting on that of all the mission is and how he got involved there. joe obviously knows a little more of that journey but we do have the stations of the cross inside the main parish church of san raphael and generous to nation was made to have them restored and conserves after several years by the web family and that's for this comes from during the time of our capital. he did these in 1919 and 1920 when the main parish church after departure chapin burned to the ground in january and looking at the stations, but
5:08 am
these were commissioned for him to be painted and paid for by babcock the one that finance these 14 stations. this one is the taking of jesus down from the cross of this is the and two men. adding that was the last of the stations. what kind of style ditch your grandfather used in particular group of classical style that he had learned in rome in the 1890's he could do a painting of any type and any style that he is proven over the years and what we see on the screen now is station no. 1 which is the condemnation of christ by pontus pilot and that's the setting that one sees that the church of st. raphael. and this one. the stripping of the garments that's also in its setting in
5:09 am
the church of san raphael. the colors of very good and what i also understand about him and said he was especially good with a human figure. absolutely because he was well trained in depicting the body which is very difficult and his specialty was portraits pretty new the human anatomy very well. to do in the portraits of famous people? when a workaholic with firm about 20 years to did portraits of many of the great actors and actresses like bette davis and heavy lombard am sure the temple. this is very early in the 1930 he remembered her as being a very nice young lady.
5:10 am
at a cloud the picture of shirley temple, pierre. that was from high the from the movie at hand comes into the camera. that was 1938 or 39. there she is she had her home here for many years in the bay area. i love to speak with their because looking for paintings that were done of shirley temple. he certainly had a varied career been in hollywood now where you when he was a hollywood i was a gleam in my dad's eyes. you didn't get to see any of the cadets and glamour. off girl in a palace to the stories because my dad grew up in hollywood and worked at some of the studios with my grandfather. i always heard the stories. my father was an opera singer by
5:11 am
profession but my grandfather when he left some of fell he was drawn to the hearst castle and worked for four years on the interior of the hearst castle so if you go there you'll see some of his have never been there but i heard it's amazing. greta has been to the site. what kind of themes did they use in the hearst castle? it was in a spanish study at an entrance way that had a beautiful etruscan mosaic floor and he wanted murals done that would fit with the style and my grandfather also did the designs of many of the ceiling to swell and did quite up to work over four years time there and that was drawn a hollywood to a connection with st. john's the
5:12 am
reporter for hearst and she was the one that connected him with hollywood and that's what allowed him to support his family during the depression. will be back in a minute or so with more tales of this fantastic journey that his grandfather took in the arts world and california.
5:13 am
5:14 am
welcome back. i'm george your host for mosaic and today we have terry and joe here to talk about the artwork hector who had a varied career and a lot of time in california
5:15 am
and in the last segment were talking about this time in hollywood. he seemed to have gone out of hollywood with his catholic faith intact which i think is an amazing thing and not sure if you could do that today but what were his connections there in hollywood and los angeles. and they clear the picture of this. as he was withdrawing solely from the orchestra in hollywood he was doing much to work for the catholic church. now the picture here of with the arch bishop the highest-ranking catholic figure in the west of the time because california did not have a cardinal that's to the left tim manning our family newman used as a parish priest and he became the second cardinal after
5:16 am
mcintyre. the reason this picture is important because the backdrop is the mural that my grandfather did it the archbishop's residence in manning at the time send the picture to my grandfather and with compliments and of course mention what a lovely mural it was in the background and was then in a romanesque style. then from there the work they did with the catholic themes became more of his life work. he did many churches in los angeles mostly in los angeles by one. they needed the church in san francisco this church of st. peter's and paul it but around the they did not have the finances to do the interior decorations and was a wonderful priest who was italian and about
5:17 am
my grandfather up i believe in 1944 to begin the decorations on the church. of the most beautiful churches think one of the most beautiful churches in san francisco and this is right in the middle of what used to be the italian section north beach which is not chinese mainly the a lot of italian minutes. joe dimaggio's parish where he was born and raised some very from. the former mayor of san francisco was buried from this church and this is his work now. he was helped by can't who was also an artist to the tune of them mark on this together for a number of years. that's the most dangerous work is that because your so high up? euna lee that the had his first heart attack what used to the church here.
5:18 am
it's a very beautiful. and what year was this personally the begun in 1944 and a grandfather passed away and 51 it was close to the head man and then finish it after my grandfather passed away. have you seen this recently got into the church recently. i was here very pleased to visit the church with my younger daughter and we had a spectacular time looking at the interior. its a very beautiful church and i know many of our audience today if they haven't seen it should absolutely a gem for san francisco and one of the most beautiful churches in california. that was dna and so was also working and other projects a the same time and what were those? he was working on the
5:19 am
seminary in camera rio california and the altar backdrops to the seminary were done by him and also the archbishop's residence of the seminary grounds was done by him. be kept very busy. and it sounds like you're setting physical problems at that time. yes he was having heart problems that he was pushing himself to any accomplished a lot. during that time when he was working on st. peter and paul some were did you live? he lives read here fairly close there was a hotel called the hotel galileo and actually found a receipt that he was paying $2 a night for the hotel room he really then became a
5:20 am
partner was a part of that culture the italian culture very strong a the time. he did feel quite at home and he and the father got along well because they spoke italian with each other during the project and even corresponded in a tie-in between seven cisco and los angeles. my grandmother was always in los angeles during the time. they have more those marriages that you had trouble for. very little except for the last stage of this life but was always with my aunt his daughter and they always worked together. will talk more about this kind of sort in the next
5:21 am
segment and what we're going to try to do is ask you to focus find some of the art because some of it is missing. we'll be back in a few moments.
5:22 am
5:23 am

5:24 am
them that have gone missing. seven years ago when i was hired as the museum curator at the parish i had noticed in the interior of the church itself in the 14 stations that two of them looked quite different and stations for and 11 are very different and i asked around the parish had anybody seen the other stations as i was curious about it. it was told to me that for and 11 were taken out and that there was significant water damage to the stations that in fact, they were taken to win either restored when thrown out and the replacements are and there i have taken out the replacements and the copies and on the back is a they found for 1996 and a name have a hard time discerning. so if anybody knows greta 1996
5:25 am
estimate to cut the pictures because they needed help in need to be cleaned and restored and then they disappeared. they've been long gone since 95 or 96. quit other signs in the corner by the artist. sending for art audience to get involved with i presume it's wind be somewhere in san rafael. i imagine it is something locally that might the were just not sure who took the pictures. let's start investigating if any of the few could help give us a call would be wonderful. the also of other artwork missing this is from the pan pacific. among grandmother or grandfather worked on the pan pacific mission in 1915 his works run the california building the more than pavilion they did a number of beautiful painting is one of them the baptism of chief iran is actually at send a fellow in the
5:26 am
museum this was the companion painting called the landing of sir francis drake at drake's bay and this was also done in a deadly new form and it was sold off after the pan pacific exposition though we don't know where it is we did have some leads that there was one similar and high-school in mill valley but that was not the one this one has never turned up. if anybody knows anything loves the is missing art works how about if we get a phone number from you that would be the best most logical place to call. 4154548141 and i'm at extension 12 like the apostles. we have a number on the screen so if anybody has any knowledge about these amazing
5:27 am
works that we would like to recapture and preserve for the public will love to hear from you. this been a fascinating discussion about the work of hector who have been a varied career and basically spent a good deal of this time in treasure and his art making art in the bay area poll that st. peter and paul and send a file mission so we've been very pleased to have his grandson nacho with us and terry the curator at the center fell mission. again if you know anything at all about some of these missing paintings give the call to terry savage at the museum at the center for parish that number again is 4548141.
