as a gunman goes room to room shooting at innocent people. what may have triggered a deadly rampage >> a hero emerges out of the tragedy. i one students quick thinking saved lives >> a cold front headed our way and we can see some showers a little bit later >> we have an accident walking lanes on southbound 101 through sound or fell. >> it is tuesday april 3rd. >> the time now is 430. the big question today, why did the gunman go on a shooting rampage at a small christian university in oakland? >> 7 people were killed and another three wounded. it started at 1030 yesterday morning when police got a call of a woman bleeding at oikos university not too far from the oakland airport. within three minutes of the call the first officers arrived and set up a perimeter and realize someone had locked all

the doors to the buildings of the use a battering ram to get inside. police inside found the victims. they didn't know if the gunman was still inside or if there were more than one of them. people ran from the building fearing for their lives and once they realize the gunman was not there they launched a massive manhunt. 45 minutes after the shots were fired a man at a safeway in alameda asked to speak with police saying he had just shot some people. officers arrived there and determined he was the suspected shooter and arrested him. police are working on a motive for the killings >> they're also trying to find the murder weapon. he is in oakland where the police chief says the target may have been a school administrator. >> we may not know exactly why but there are a couple of steps closer, let's take a look at the video from the scene yesterday.

they have identified a suspect, and police are saying that he could have been upset with the school for expelling him. the details, apparently the suspect took receptionist hostage looking for a particular female administrator. he walked into a class room, lined students up and then shot them execution-style one by one. he left and realize there were more students in other classrooms, fired more shots and then the suspect left in the victim's car. he was found about two hours later 3 mi. away in that shopping complex. we're learning more about the suspect, he had had a brush past year, he lost two family members. as mother died in curry s shortly after leaving oakland and his brother was a u.s. army sergeant who died in an auto wreck in virginia while on special forces training. the only surviving member was his father who was ushered out

of the senior living home. he was here in oakland and even though we are learning these details, oakland police are trying to piece together the puzzle and we know there will be a long road ahead in terms of recovery in this investigation. >> we have called our on scene crime labs of back and take up to 24 hours to process. a very bloody scene with lots of evidence that so we will take our time and collect evidence and process it so we can have a good solid case to present to the d.a.. >> we also know that one go is facing financial problems. according to the chronicle he had a conviction from, any eviction from a former apartment and federal tax liens in 2006 and 2009 adding up to $23,000. these are new details about the

suspect but they are hoping that all of these will lead to a definite motive and to the murder weapon but all these details will not be any solace for the families that lost their own family members or the victims. >> the victims were all brought to highland hospital in oakland. cbs five has obtained some cellphone video from a witness at the scene who was able to capture a woman who was shot in the arm. the witness described the scene inside the school. >> i heard the gunshots, like five or six and then a woman screamed and then my teacher went outside and check and then he said somebody has a gun, run >> students at the school say the shots were fired in just a matter of seconds.

not even one minute, very quickly >> for many students it was the ultimate test of dealing with a crisis under pressure. one person heard gunshots outside the classroom, she locked the door and turned off the lights and told the class to keep quiet. she says the gunman fired shots at the door but she is haunted by the cries of the victim that came from outside the room >> just to hear the noise, she was asking for help again and again, there was nothing we could do about that. >> she and others eventually escaped uninjured. police say that her actions helped save the lives of her instructor and classmates. the oakland mayor is asking everyone in the area to band together. >> this is the kind of situation where we need to pull together and support the caribbean community in particular where most of the victims appear to be from and i

has your name on it and it will slam you and that is exactly what happened >> one of the sailors is being treated for broken ribs while the other has an injured pelvis. suspended sherrif ross mirkarimi is allowed to go back to his home. the judge modified his stay away order yesterday saying that he can live in the san francisco home until the 27th of this month, about the time his wife and their son are expected to return home from their visit to venezuela >> stay away orders were issued last month for one dozen protesters in connection with a protest in november. the daily californian report's alameda county officials lifted the orders against four protesters yesterday. a hearing had been scheduled today on the stay away orders. occupy san francisco is no longer in control of a vacant building owned by a catholic church. police took about 75 protesters

into custody but occupier sprayed graffiti and smashed a light fixtures. the claim they want to change the building into a homeless shelter. taxpayers are paying the price for the protests. the chp says it had to pay an additional $166,000 in overtime for officers to monitor last month's rally at the state capitol in sacramento. that demonstration was a protest against cuts to higher education. >> i guess this drawing of nice weather is over >> we have already seen the clouds outside right now but it will take some time to get in here so we probably won't need to worry about raindrops' until the afternoon. mostly cloudy skies with temperatures fairly mild in the 40's and '50's. the system is slowly working its way towards the bay area. most of the energy will head to

the north but eventually some of it will drag into the north bay to bring a chance of showers. temperatures will be running in the '60s towards the coastline and even some low 70's in the interior valleys. >> we are following an accident, southbound 101 by north san pedro road exit. the accident happened before 430 this morning and it sounds like a still have the outer lanes blocked off. the middle lane is able to get by. a fire crew is on the scene, on the way as well. we're really not seeing many delays because it is so early. speeds are averaging about 66 mi. per hour. roadwork could slow you down this morning including the upper deck of the bay bridge. that is traffic, back to you.

sputtered and plunged into the building. customers didn't really know what happened until they went outside. jet blue pilot clayton osmond is being held without bail until he goes to court. police have arrested a mug shot of the pilot after his crew mate made an emergency landing. they had locked him out of the cockpit after unusual behavior during that flight >> 1 truckdriver is in the hospital while another was able to jump out safely before this happened. so scary, a tow truck carrying a big rig crashed down a mountainside in norway. the big rig drivers suffered me it major injuries after falling nearly 200 ft.. the driver of the tow truck was able to jump out just seconds before the accident. >> so the guy was still in the

truck >> yes, but the other driver was able to get out safely. that is scary video. >> how about the weather, times are changing? >> yesterday afternoon was a very nice day but today we have some changes and maybe some raindrops coldly coming our way. it does not look like a strong one but lots of high clouds out there right now. i think as we head towards the afternoon we will see a chance of some showers starting out in the north bay but temperatures will stay mild. low seventies by the afternoon. it is developing in the gulf of alaska, not much energy, and most of it will head to the north. maybe some breezy conditions behind that system. the computer model picks up on it pretty well. showers still keeping you dry

in the south bay but as we had through the afternoon hours, it will sag further to the south. the commute could be wet on the way home so be careful. that moves by, then still a chance of scattered showers tomorrow morning but not much. enjoy the temperatures in the south bay today, 70 in loss status. 60 degrees in pacific up. almost 70 degrees in brentwood and as you get further north there is more cloud cover and it more chance of showers with temperatures in the '60s. the next few days the weather will stay unsettled. a slight chance of showers north of the golden gate bridge on wednesday. temperatures much cooler through friday but then things warm up nicely into the easter weekend. temperatures may be backed up to the '60s and '70s steelers sunday but today is touch and go.

>> easter egg hunts will not be soggy >> no, but we might have some melted chocolate easter rates. >> it is nice and dry outside, and we don't have too many incidents out there. in the meantime, let's look at some of the bridges. here is a look at the san mateo bridge where so far, things look great in both directions. the camera is just past the toll plaza but it looks pretty good all the way out. the golden gate bridge is moving fine and if you are traveling through marin, this is the accident i was messing mentioning. it was southbound 101 but they did clear it off to the lincoln park and everything is off to the right shoulder and it never really caused a delay because it happened before 430 this morning. looking good across the upper

deck of the bay bridge. there still might be some work at the incline of treasure island. crews were out there overnight doing their usual stuff across the upper deck. not much to slow you down but you will be aware of it if you're heading into san francisco. you can see all in the green, no yellow sensors yet all the way through livermore. that will all change likely later on in the commute. looking pretty good on 101 and 280. no major issues along the peninsula even if you're heading up towards 237 and downtown san francisco. all of the east bay drive times are still green. coming up we will get a look at mass transit. >> higher gas prices mean more

people shopping for fuel- efficient cars. gm said a sales record in march, selling 100,000 cars that get 30 mi. per gallon. chrysler also report strong sales of cars that get 30 mi. per gallon or more >> and delta airlines is testing a new low-fare seating options. the basic seats are 12-$20 cheaper than regular economy seats. the basic seats are non- refundable and no cancellations or changes are allowed after the tickets are purchased. seats are assigned by a computer and passengers can still earn frequent flyer miles. a new version of the apple ipad is the best apple computer on the market. a review praises its high- resolution screen, improved camera and longer battery life and plays down the issue of overheating even though engineers found it can get as hot as 116 degrees while running

games. there is a new national champion in the world of college basketball. >> it actually turned out to be a pretty good game. the wildcats took an early lead and held off a big comeback attempt by kansas. kentucky finish the season with a mighty impressive 38-2 record. after their team won in louisiana, wildcat fans back in kentucky did a little celebrating, maybe too much. it got out of hand at one point, lexington police say they arrested a few dozen people, several couches and at least one car were set on fire. one person was shot but will be ok. i never quite understand, he won the title, have some fun,
