gate ferry service >> commuters have been warned, the strike that will impact the morning commute this morning >> patchy fog along the coastline with cooler temperatures come in our way. >> we're starting off with an accident on the bay bridge and windy conditions on the san mateo bridge. >> it is tuesday may 1st, >> is 430 and we begin with developing news in the south bay. the fire department is at the scene of a three alarm fire in east san jose. flames were reported before 3:00 a.m.. crews had a handle on the incident 45 later, five or six people were injured and no word on the extent of the injuries >> you are planning to take the ferry this morning from the north bay to san francisco you are out of luck. a strike has prompted a shutdown until the middle of the afternoon. workers plan to picket in about

one hour >> the theory behind me is not going anywhere. there is already a very small handful of workers year but they expect a lot more to show up later on this morning so the best advice for commuters, stay home, work from home if you can. about 6000 people use the ferry service every day so now all of them will need to find other alternates like the golden gate bridge which can really get back up. golden gate transit decided to shut down ferry service after workers decided on a one day strike. they made the announcement yesterday hoping people would hear the news and find other alternates. now we hear there will be a second day of striking tomorrow. they are expected to make the official announcement later on. basically what this means for commuters is no boats.

you can still use golden gate transit buses. at one point there was talk of shutting down the entire golden gate bridge. union leaders say they don't want to see that happen. >> we made an announcement previously asking that no one should down the bridge and we will be concentrating our efforts at the ferry terminals. >> so buses of occupy protesters in addition to workers are expected to show up here and around the bridge later this morning to help support the cause. golden gate officials say they're planning on resuming ferries from larkspur and sausalito after 2:00 today so once again the strikes are planned here at the golden gate ferry for this morning and now for tomorrow morning as well. you can get the very latest on ferry service and alternate routes at cbssf.com. we're live in larkspur this morning.

>> it is mayday, mayday that has become known for protests and strikes. >> kate is in san francisco where vandals broke away from a peaceful demonstration and went on a rampage in the mission district. >> now police are hoping that last night's events are not an indicator of things to come today. we're hoping that the vandals don't come back now. get a look at what they did, they hit the area around 9:15 p.m.. they took two smashing windows, throwing paint on police stations and businesses in the neighborhood. one person said they saw about 50 people taking part in the vandalism. one person was arrested, businesses were not the only things that were targeted. look at the damage done to this aston martin along with other cars.

i'm sure neighbors and police in the area hope this is the last day of scene of this and it started off as a peaceful demonstration, originally protesters set up a series of what they called family friendly events. one occupy processors pope protesters said that event was not part of this. he called it heartbreaking. >> this was the scene shortly before the vandalism spree in the mission district. union workers took over san francisco city hall demanding better salaries and higher taxes on some businesses to pay more for city services. after about two hours they left peacefully >> up to 4500 registered nurses plan to stage a one day strike and that starts this morning as well. at 7:00 a.m. to walk off the job. it will be the third such

the tuesday morning commute. reports of an accident at the bay bridge toll plaza. a person going by says that the vehicle may have hit one of the tollbooths. chp just arrived on the scene so we will get more information as it comes in. it is still very early and the metering lights are off. golden gate ferries, no service today, so we might see some extra busy conditions. we will continue to keep you updated on the golden gate bridge as well >> today crews are beginning the long process of dealing with debris from a demolition project in seven cisco. and will stretch of doyle drive near the golden gate bridge was reduced to rubble over the weekend. caltrans says it will take a couple of months to holloway the concrete and steel >> they actually have a machine to process it

>> much of the material will be reused for other highway projects >> in santa cruz county investigators are looking into what caused the fire that injured 17 people. five of them were critically injured yesterday afternoon at a residential hotel in downtown watsonville. an 85 year-old building had no sprinklers. they're working on long-term mirkarimi and his wife eliana lopez asked the judge to allow lopez to stay up to seven more weeks in her native country and the judge said yes. mirkarimi is suspended without pay so lopez is now trying to earn some money in her native country of venezuela and their son will be kept out of the public eye during an extended stay >> sheriff's department divers in santa clara county are searching more bodies of water this week seeking clues in the

initiative that would raise the city's minimum wage to $10 per hour. it began as a student protest at sam's a state university. last week the court's office confirmed the measure has enough signatures to qualify for and the november ballot. it could potentially pass the measure into law avoiding the expense of a citywide vote. there is a new plan to address complaints about a big pay raise for california state university presidents. the sacramento bee reports trustees will consider freezing the amount of state can a presence on three of their on 23 of their campuses but would allow money raised by foundations to increase president's pay. trustees are expected to decide sometime next week. the muni system is moving towards allowing passengers to board buses to bring off the front and rear doors. the idea is to speed up boarding process. the plan on hiring extra inspectors to make sure everyone pays.

assuring cool air across the bay area. there's even a chance we could see some showers as we head into thursday. patchy fog out there on and off along the coastline but the temperatures will stay down and it will be breezy outside. in the south bay, low 70's. in the east bay, cooler temperatures with '60s and '70s and when you get inside the day you will find plenty of 60s and maybe some low 70's towards santa rosa. by thursday there is a 30 percent chance of a few showers in the bay area and then we dryout. >> we will start off with the bay bridge toll plaza. we just checked in with chp who called it crews out to the scene where apparently a vehicle hit one of the tollbooths. it is a non injury accident. you can see live here that

traffic is actually not that bad. the metering lights are still off at the bay bridge. try to avoid the no. 7 tollbooth but not too bad through the bay bridge. we have a high wind advisory for the san mateo bridge but no major delays. looking good on 880 as well as won a one. golden gate ferry service has been suspended. elisabeth is live at the scene and she will have more details in a few minutes. because of a pending strike there is no service so about 6000 people usually travel on the golden gate ferry for the commute in the morning and we will see extra busy conditions on the bridge, that is probably one of your best alternates. it is still early in very quiet and not a lot of cars headed down the golden gate bridge. we will check the east bay coming up in just a few minutes.
