out of control >> a fire hydrant knockdown by a driver, the trail of destruction and how it came to a smashing and. >> more clouds on the way with a chance of showers and we will talk about a coming up >> both directions of 101 in menlo park are very slow right now. >> good morning everybody. >> protesters in san francisco are occupying a vacant building this morning. >> and joins us with the very latest. >> from what we understand there are about 200 protesters inside this abandoned building behind me. here you can see police standing by, i spoke with them a few minutes ago and they say they've been here since 10:00 last night and they're waiting for further orders from top brass. two people have been arrested

in the area so far and one man was throwing bricks of the roof of the building. one person in the crowd was hit in the face and at the person was charged with felony aggravated assault. another protester started throwing heavy metal pipes at police vehicles. police fired rubber bullets at him and he finally stopped. this was the protest earlier in the evening. most people pledging non- violence and denouncing the people were throwing things. this is the second time in a month that occupied demonstrators have storm this vacant building owned by the archdiocese of san francisco. police evicted them last year and the archdiocese has ask them to do so again. they say they will act when the time is right. these folks plan on having another demonstration here this

morning. >> mayday was dominated by occupy protest and an oakland, thousands of demonstrators took to the streets all day and stayed well into the night. things got pretty heated as some of the protesters and officers went head-to-head. the evening started with more than 5000 people marching to the plaza and when officers tried to make arrests, things got violent. protesters were throwing rocks and bottles and total, 25 people were arrested. demonstrators took their frustrations out on businesses. this wells fargo bank with a broken window, protesters destroyed an atm machine. vandalism was also reported that the bank of america branch at the kaiser center. two people arrested for arson and someone even set a police vehicle on fire. the oakland police chief says

the crowd was very aggressive and even setting off flash bang grenades. >> occupy protesters were more aggressive than ever. it took just moments for the protesters to turn on the press. kristen was inside the live truck when they tried to climb on top of the vehicles >> it only took a few minutes for the protest to turn on us. some of the protesters broke our windshield and after they did that they tried to climb and successfully into the cab and when they couldn't do that one of them rip off a side view mirror. from there they went straight for the tires. >> they were not hurt, we do have photo galleries of the protests on both sides of the day at cbssf.com.

developing news in contra costa county where a suspect fired at officers after they tried to pull him over for a routine traffic stop. the chase ended on bethel island. gunfire hit a police car but missed the officers. police say residents living near piper and sugar bar road should stay inside during the manhunt and lock their doors >> a car drives off the road onto sidewalks getting everything in sight. take a look at some of the damage left behind. the driver was headed down alchemy note in millbrae. county officials say it is possible he could have fallen asleep. the car jumped a curb hitting a fire hydrant, trees, light poles, everything. the driver was not seriously injured but thankfully no one was hurt. >> a good driver would be where

freeway really quickly but northbound 101 is closed. southbound various plans are blocked so it is sluggish in both directions. that is supposed to wrap up in the next 25 minutes and hopefully that will be the case. perkiness bridge traffic looks great. fine down the east shore freeway. >> the golden gate ferry service back on schedule this morning from iran. a partial to day strike suspended operations to mark yesterday. it affected about 3000 commuters who travel from san francisco to the north bay. union organizers said they would organize another strike on may 10th if they don't agree on a contract very soon. the bridge builder says compaction of the single main cable on the bridge bridge is now under way. it is the world's longest shelf

anchored suspension span. later this morning caltrans will let us on the bridge to show you the latest progress on the project. we will find out today whether there may soon be a strike on california state university campuses. and in the california faculty association will announce the results of a strike authorization vote. 22 months of negotiations have failed to produce contracts so 24,000 employes on the 23 campuses have been voting on a possible strike. >> president obama is heading back to washington after a previously unannounced visit to afghanistan. he was there to sign a strategic partnership agreement with the afghan president. the deal outlines the next phase of the u.s. role in afghanistan after combat missions wind down at the end of 2014 >> it defines a new kind of relationship between our countries, a future in which

afghans are responsible for the security of their nation and we build an equal partnership between two sovereign states. if future in which war ends and a new chapter begins. >> the president's trip also included a visit to an airbase. it was his third trip to afghanistan as president. hours after he left caliban insurgents attacked a compound that houses' international contractors. seven people were killed and another 17 were wounded. the taliban says the attack was in response to the president's visit the came one year to the day after osama bin laden was killed by a raid in pakistan >> newt gingrich has a big announcement plant in virginia. he is expected to finally officially dropped out of the presidential race and endorse mitt romney. newt gingrich won primaries and only two states and his

them. investigators say there was no real danger because the explosives were all phony. the alleged plot involved a bridge that carries a four-lane highway through a national park near cleveland. the fbi says the suspects were trying to express their anger at corporate america. a jury has convicted a bosnian immigrant plotting to blow up the city's subway system. he was found guilty of conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction as well as terrorist charges. >> the recall effort against oakland's mayor is faltering. the main group trying to accomplish it is short on cash, volunteers, and signatures. the committee has only about one-third of the necessary signatures and is $26,000 in debt. a recent poll shows little support >> in bart agent fired for

patchy fog at the coastline. more clouds on the way. >> the city of san jose is projecting a budget surplus for the fiscal year. the manager's office announced a $9 million surplus yesterday but cautioned that another deficit is likely for the 20132014 fiscal year. the surplus could allow cities to staff for library branches that had been closed and could also provide more funding for anti gang and crossing guard programs >> the wall street journal says facebook will open its ipo may 18th. the report also says it will begin meeting with potential major investors monday in what is known as a road show. their founder is expected to be at some of those meetings. facebook is looking to raise

about $5 billion. >> police approved security plans may soon be a required at commercial parking lots as a measure designed to make club doors feel little bit safer when they're going back to their car. watts within 1,000 ft. of clubs will read be required to have an attendant on duty until three in the morning. the ordinance could be approved by next week. walnut creek city council passed to of all rules for bars and restaurants. businesses will need to follow nuisance based performance standards that are set up by the city. violators could lose their license to operate. city leaders say 99 percent of the bars and restaurants will not be affected at all by that change. >> there is nothing to the recent claims that secret service agents hired strippers and prostitutes in el salvador last year, the word from janet

napolitano says some agents who were in el salvador have been interviewed in the investigation. an anonymous source made the allegations to a seattle tv station. a former teammate and friend of roger clemens takes the stand again today in clements perjury trial. andy pettit testified yesterday that clements told him he had taken a human growth hormones. clemens is accused of lying to congress when he says he never took the drugs. they were teammates in new york and in houston >> firefighters trying to stop the massive blaze from spreading three resort in west texas. around 250 firefighters all moving through the remote canyons in the region battling the first major texas wild fire of the season. part of the area experienced

tyler perry studios have been damaged by fire in a four alarm fire last night. officers have not revealed the cause of the fire and it was put out in about one hour. the complex included a large studio, five sound stages and a theater >> new video of a deadly crash shows what crewmembers were doing just before a tugboat slammed into a disabled tourist vessel. a warning, this may be disturbing. that is a boat on the delaware river two years ago. attorneys for two crash victims show the video shows crewmembers jumping off the safety instead of helping passengers put on life jackets. the sand or felt teenager accused of stealing a lamborghini will be charged as an adult. police say the 17 year-old stole the car that belonged to a celebrity chef in a movie style heist last year. police say weighed is also

behind a drive-by shooting in mill valley. he faces seven felony counts. >> airport security made quite a discovery in the back of a woman headed to sfo. the tsa in newark new jersey founded the vietnam era mine casings in a checked bag but there were no explosives or detonators. the woman's explanation was that she was attending an explosives demonstration. >> of course. >> she was allowed to book a later flight. air travelers have ranked at laguardia airport as the worst in the u.s.. travelers can plant about the check-in and security process and say it is the worst for staff communications, design, and cleanliness. passengers say the best airport in the country is minneapolis. >> is lovely.

the mount diablo unified school district is trying to wipe out its pg&e bill which is roughly $3.5 million per year. >> the district in contra costa county is installing solar panels that most of its campuses. the plan to get 90 percent of the power from the sun to save money over 30 years. >> it is unprecedented, 51 schools, 12 mw which is equivalent to a small power plant. >> a voters approved a bond is applying it equipment. san jose based sun power will except 40 student interns this summer. >> a full moon last night, it was hard to sleep and we were all talking about it >> i was just thinking about the forecast today so it was hard to sleep. we're seeing some cooling temperatures around the bay area as high pressure backs away from

the coastline. mostly clear skies but cold in certain spots. a couple of patches of fog in the bay. a couple of patches out towards the coast. by the afternoon we will begin to see a few more high cloud spread across. some changes are on the works. high pressure has backed away and this next system is not a real strong one but it will bring some high clouds and by tomorrow, maybe chance of a few showers. not bad this morning and then here come the high clouds throughout the afternoon. by tomorrow it looks like the clouds begin to gather. maybe a chance of a couple of raindrops. with that in mind, enjoy the day today. temperatures about 68 degrees in san jose. east bay temperatures in the 60s and low 70's.

inside the day, '50s and '60s. changes in the works, today will cool off a little bit, tomorrow there is a chance of showers. then we get into friday. high pressure begins to build back again and we could see offshore wind kicking in. temperatures near 80 degrees in the warmer spots over the weekend. >> let's take you outside, first we will take it live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. you can see the traffic right now is nice and light heading towards the pay gates. lower deck traffic into oakland looks pretty good as well. we have photographers all across the bay area. here is one where everything is

now moving ok. earlier overnight we had some road work in menlo park. it was between march and university. we had a full freeway closure in the northbound direction with various lanes blocked southbound. it is still pretty slow in the area. a lot of on rents were blocked overnight so it might take a little while to clear. slow conditions in the meantime. elsewhere here is a live look at the golden gate bridge. it looks like they have been opening some lands in the last few minutes so all that roadwork was scheduled to wrap up about 5:00 this morning. no major issues along 101 and 280 in the south bay. no delayed traffic near oakland and it continues to move well

weekend, it is cinco de milo, it is a super moon >> that means the moon will become full at its closest point to the earth so it will look even bigger. this video is from last year's super moon which was in march. this one is expected saturday at 8:35 p.m. pacific time. >> our blinds were wide open and it was like there was a light on outside with the moon last night. >> it is for 56 right now, the scandal rocking the girl scouts in southern california >> treasure hunters flocking to gold country but this time they're looking for something from our space. >> police are streaming into the area of an occupied building in san francisco,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

>> good morning everyone. >> it is nearly 5:00 now >> san francisco police are moving and remove protesters from a building they occupied overnight >> did just went into that building. >> within the last two minutes, we saw dozens, maybe up to 100 officers running around this area here. several of them went inside of that building which has been occupied by protesters since yesterday evening. police have now blocked off this entire area traffic. they're wearing riot gear as you can see and several of them are inside the building right now. we're not exactly sure what will happen now. clearly the police are trying to evict these protesters from the vacant
