people to the space station by 2018. space-x hopes to do it at least two years earlier.

now, if all goes according to plan, space-x will return to ertd sometime around the end of the month. it will splash down in the pacific much like the old apollo mission and hopefully be picked up by a ship and be used once again. terrell? >> dick, this is an important moment for the u.s. space program. if all goes well, what's next for space-x. >> reporter: you said the words, terrell "if all goes well." they say they would like to get into manned flights. they think they can do it faster than anybody else. the question is will nasa be ready? they had their budget cut in half this past year. space-x is certainly confident about its future, terrell. >> we'll certainly be watching. dick, thank you so much. one year ago a massive and powerful tornado devastated the town of joplin. today the town will break ground as through new schools including

a high school. and the speaker at this year's graduation was the president of the united states. danielle nottingham reports. >> reporter: president obama didn't have to look far for motivation behind commencement address for the class of 2012. >> as i look out at this class and across this city, what's clear is that you're the source of inspiration today. >> reporter: it was may 22nd, 2011 when a massive f-5 tornado struck. 161 people were dead, including quinton anderson's parents. >> i remember like it's still with me. >> reporter: and duerson and his parents were in their home when they were hit right here. he was found across the street with a broken back. when he woke up in the hospital three days later his sister told

him his parents were were killed i even one of those people that doesn't cry when people are around. when they left, i cried. >> reporter: homes that can withstand 255--mile-an-hour winds are going up and the high school that was leveled has been relocated. >> you will not be defined by the difficulties face but by how you respond, with grace and strength and a commitment to others. >> reporter: for quinton and his classmates, some of life's hardest challenges may already be behind them. danielle nottingham, cbs news. the president arrived in joplin following the nato summit in chicago. leaders agree on how to end the war in afghanistan. nato will keep combat troops in afghanistan for two more years. that's when the mission and

training advisory will take place. the president greeted pakistan's president and afghan president hamid karzai. pakistan is not a nato member and continues to block nato supply routes into afghanistan. while mr. obama conducts his duties as president, he's also in campaign mode. we were reminded of that while he was in summit when he was asked about the campaign attack ads. the ads were about mitt romney and he only carried about the bottom line. it has upset supporters. susan mcginnis has more. >> good morning. the president shrugged off the comments and said this is what the election will be about. president obama called into question mitt romney's business experience monday, the president saying romney's work in private equity doesn't translate to the

white house. >> he's saying i'm a business guy and i know how to fix it and this is his business, and when you're president as opposed to the head of a private equity firm, your job is not simply to max mime problems. your job is to figure out how everybody in the country has a fair shot. >> the attack goes directly at romney's central argument that he, not president obama, is better suited to lead the economy. president obama was responding to a question about a recent ad that attacks romney's former firm bain capital. romney's campaign is hitting back, saying the president opposes free enterprise and the republican is using democrats such as newark mayor cory booker to make his point. >> you look at the totality of businesses, grows businesses.

he's only the third person not wearing a safety device that lived after taking the plunge into the falls. rescuers had to go down and pull him to safety. police say it was a suicide attempt. he's in critical condition but he will survive. "cbs moneywatch" now on a tuesday. a huge fight over a file-sharing fine and how much extra would you pay for a window seat? ashley morrison here in new york. good morning. >> good morning to you, terrell. they went on a buying spree. tokyo's nikkei gained 1% while hong kong's hang seng rose more than half a percent. it appears investors don't like facebook's stock. they pledge 11% in their second day of trading and that was after gaining just 23 cents a share on friday. monday's loss sent facebook founder mark zuckerberg's fortune down more than $2 billion. facebook fell despite a positive day on wall street.

the dow was up 135 points while the nasdaq gained 68. it looks like a former college student may have to pay nearly $700,000 in fines for allegedly downloading music. the court is refused to hear an appeal by joe tenenbaum. in 2009 a jury ordered him to pay $675,000 to the recording industry for downloading and distributing 30 songs. a federal judge could reduce that fine. and it is getting harder to sit next to your loved ones on a flight. airlines are reserving more seats for passengers willing to pay extra to sit next to a window or on the aisle. that's making it harder to find groups of seats together. terrell, i do know for experience, though, if you show up for a crying baby, they'll gladly give you that third seat real fast. >> you know what? it's getting to the point they're going to charge you to breathe on an airplane, you know? you have to pay for everyting. >> how much do you want to breathe, the whole flight? >> ashley morrison in new york. thank you so much. we'll take a quick break.

a routine prostate cancer screening because the treatments may do more harm than good. about 28,000 men in america die from prostate cancer each year, and as dr. jon lapook tells us, the new guidelines have already unleashed a heated debate. >> reporter: for 20 years the message has been the same. get a psa test every year or two, detect prostate cancer early, and save your life. dr. michael lefevre helped lead the panel that said the message is wrong. >> the problem is that in contrast to the small benefits, a significant number of men will be harmed by the tests and treatments that follow prostate cancer screening. >> the task force said the psa is unreliable, giving a false result 83% of the time. prostate cancer usually progresses so slowly they usually die of something else. the panel is among the most influential in the country. it cited an 11-year study of over 1,000 men.

the options for men with prostate cancer include radiation, surgery, hormones, or simply observing. side effects of treatments include erectile dysfunction and urinary difficulties. lefevre says the consequences could be even worse. >> ultimately we'll find that two to three men out of those thousand will, in fact, have a serious complication such as a heart attack, strobe, blood closet, or even death. >> the recommendation sparked fury at the annual meeting of the annual urological association. in a statement the group said it was outraged and that the recommendation was inappropriate and irresponsible. >> i do not believe that the medical evidence in any way supports this conclusion. >> dr. herbert lepor is the head of urology at the medical center. >> psa has taken us down the road to increasing prostate cancer deaths. we all recognize we've got a long way to go to perfect treatment, but the last thing we

need to do is turn back. >> we have been taught for years to fear cancer and that the only hope is early detection and treatment, and so for both doctors and patients alike, it's difficult to accept that some cancers don't need to be discovered and don't need to be treated. >> african-americans and men with a family heft of prostate cancer are at an increased risk of the disease. even so they say there's not enough evidence to recommend screening in either of these two groups. >> a teenager thankful to be alive this morning after being rescued from a raging waterfall northeast of seattle. 13-year-old william hickman got swept over a 10-foot waterfall after he tried to go for a quick dip. he managed to pull himself into a narrow rock shell. the boy stayed there for more than eight hours until rescuers used a helicopter to get him to safety. coming up after your local news on "cbs this morning,"

♪ relations between u.s. and afghan soldiers is at an all-time low. nato began a study of afghan attacks on u.s. forces after six american soldiers were killed during a joint patrol in 2010. the report was finished last year but was quickly classified. allen pizzey has some details of what's in that report. >> reporter: the murder of u.s. troops by afghan soldiers they train and fight alongside is a growing systemic threat, according to a coalition report issued last may. since then the number of attacks has increased. at least 55 american troops have been killed since 2007. more than 75% of the incidents happened in the last two years. the killings were mainly sparked by the strain the war places on individual soldiers.

>> the vast majority of the cases are coming from battle fatigue, that is, people who are under strong emotional influences. >> you should want to be the best. >> reporter: but the report concluded it was triggered by cultural misunderstandings and insults. they reported a deep-seated contempt on both sides. americans claim afghan soldiers were undisciplined. among the comments, they're stoned all the time, some even while on patrol with us, and they're pretty much gutless in combat. we do most of the fighting. afghans interviewed for the report were equally scathing describing american troops as bullying and disrespectful. the most frequent complaint was u.s. soldiers don't listen. they're too arrogant and they get upset due to their casualties so, they take it out on civilians during searches. the worst point of friction, night raids on homes has been fixed.

they're only conducted by afghan forces. nonetheless, american troops in joint bases with afghans sleep with what they call a guardian angel. one man awake and armed. even at training centers, no one relaxes their guard, according to army first lieutenant cory scanlon. >> you can't be too critical or else they'll get upset because there's a lot of honor at stake. so sometimes you have to be careful how you address people. >> reporter: the serious finance of that is the proverb life over wealth, honor over life. it may be why it's offensive in one culture and mortal in afghanistan. allen pizzey, cbs news. we'll hear from new york's cardinal timothy dolan. also the controversial decision regarding the psa for prostate cancer, should you drop it.
