yesterday. drew levinson has our report. a fast moving storm sent trees and power lines smashing into homes and cars in free hold, new jersey. >> the wind went through. it was incredible. looked like a tornado going through. will fernandez and his son ben spent sunday cleaning up their yard where a tree barely missed their house. there's no electricity and with temperatures still hovering around 90 in this neighborhood, fernandez says it's tough staying inside. >> how uncomfortable has it been for you? >> very uncomfortable. no power. so it's been sweating profusely. >> jersey central power and light says more than 85,000 customers lost electricity saturday. crews have been working around the clock to restore the power. storms are ushering in relief in the form of cooler weather. but it was still sizzling in washington, d.c. on sunday where it hit triple digits for the fourth day in a row. it was 102 in the nation's capitol. a record high for july 8th.

>> a lot of people are sick of it and want it over. >> as people continue to try to cool down from the heat wave and clean up from the damaging storms, forecasters are promising lower temperatures ahead. drew levinson, cbs news, free hold, new jersey. president obama is expected to announce today that he'll call for a one-year extension of tax cuts for the middle class. "the new york times" reports the president will ask for tax cuts for making less than $250,000 a year. house republicans plan to vote this month to extend permanently all the bush era tax cuts for middle and upper income people. to the supreme court now and president obama's health care law. we're learning more about chief justice john roberts' decision to uphold the affordable care act. conservatives feel betrayed including roberts fellow justices. cbs news chief legal correspondent, jan crawford says conservative justices were infuriated that roberts switched his position late in the game. >> the conservatives refuse to even engage with roberts on

joining his opinion to uphold the law and they sat out writing their own opinion. they wrote it really to look like a majority decision, my sources say, because they hoped that roberts would rejoin them to strike down that mandate. >> crawford says there's a tension and bitterness on the court not seen in nearly 70 years. overseas this morning, the taliban claimed responsibility for a roadside bomb that killed six american soldiers yesterday in eastern afghanistan. roadside bombs and insurgent attacks killed a total of 29 people yesterday in afghanistan. so far this year, more than 225 nato service members have been killed in that country. u.n. special envoy kofi annan is in damascus trying to revive the peace plan he say has failed. he's planning to meet with bashar al assad. assad says annan's plan is good and should not be allowed to fail. according to one human rights group more than 30 people were killed yesterday. in clashes between syrian government and rebel troops. susan mcginnis has more this

morning. susan, good morning to you. >> terrell, good morning. an estimated 14,000 people are now dead in this conflict that's about 16 months old now. kofi annan heads back to damascus to try again. kofi annan's convoy pulled into a secured hotel in damascus. he will meet with bashar al assad today to try to revive the failed peace plan he first brokered. >> the government of syria and all parties on the ground must recommit to the six-point plan in its entirety. >> the annan plan called for a cease-fire and for the government to withdraw its troops from populated areas. but in the three months since the plan was agreed to, the fighting has only worsened. >> a violation of human rights continue to take place. >> assad blames the u.s. >> they give -- they offered umbrella and support to those

gangs to create destabilized. >> the obama administration is coming under sharp criticism from some on capitol hill who say the u.s. isn't doing enough to remove assad from power. >> my question is to the secretary of state and the president of the united states is how many more have to die before we take action to help these people? >> secretary of state hillary clinton says assad will be gone soon enough. >> the future to me should be abundantly clear to those who support the assad regime. the days are numbered. >> but assad said he isn't going anywhere. >> we have a national challenge now in syria. president shouldn't escape the situation. >> he says he'll stay in power until the end. now, the west is said to be reluctant to intervene because of how quickly the crisis in syria could escalate further with all the allegiances that syria has, like iran and the hezbollah. in lebanon. terrell? susan mcginnis in washington. thank you so much.

in egypt, a power struggle is brewing between the newly elected islamic president and a group of powerful generals. in a surprise move yesterday, mohamed morsi called. on the islamist dominated parliament to reconvene. parliament had been dissolved by a mill ir court ruling and the mill ir gave itself powers. the generals who ruled egypt since hosni mubarak was overthrown held an emergency meeting. it's too early returns to liberal powers holding a lead over the islamic rivals. the first nationwide elections in nearly 50 years. early returns suggest liberal parties holding a lead. cbs "moneywatch" time on a monday. internet service pro identifiers get ready for mall ware. -- malware. we talked about that. thousands of customers may not be able to access the web and more signs of a slowdown in china. ashley morrison with more. >> it's not a mall. good morning, terrell.

there are concerns over slowing economic conditions in china. today, inflation fell to the lowest level since 2010. that was coupled with increases in consumer prices and food prices. a disruption in china's economy could have a negative impact on u.s. and european markets. on friday, china released the second quarter gdp. figures and it is expected to be the worst report in three years. that news put a chill on markets in asia. the nikkei dropped 1.5% and the hang seng lost 2%. earnings season begins on wall street this week. friday we'll get the first quarterly report from jpmorgan chase since the bank reported that massive multibillion dollar loss. friday's weak jobs report led to a down day for stocks. the dow lost 124 points while the nasdaq fell 38. after falling steadily since april, gas prices ticked up last week. according to aaa, the average price of a gallon of regular is $3.38.

that's about eight cents higher than a week ago. and thousands of computers may not be able to connect to the internet this morning. at midnight, the fbi shut down temporary servers that were set up to keep computers infected with malware online. the fbi estimates more than 40,000 computers in the u.s. will be affected. if you think your computer is one of them, you're asked to call your internet service provider. i sure hope you don't have mallware. >> that's the virus you have on the weekend that makes you spend. >> right. >> ashley morrison in new york. appreciate it. coming up on the morning news, fins up. a shark sighting off cape cod gives a kayaker a big fright setting off a furious paddle. also a frightening misstep for a tightrope walker in china. this is the morning news. is the morning news. trying to cross a tightrope suspended more than 600 feet in the air. it didn't help that he was blindfolded and walking backwards when he suddenly lost his balance. lucky for him, though, he was near the end and fell into the side of valley. i give him six months. he'll be right back up there. he was not badly hurt. in chicago another death-defying act. only for these guys, it's their job. they were on top of the willis tower. 1700 feet in the air. loosening the bolts on an antenna. a helicopter took the monstrosity away. a new digital antenna will be installed in the next few weeks. break out the theme music to "jaws." do we have that? no. in massachusetts and california, beaches were closed after great white sharks got a little too close for comfort. as karen brown reports, the shark aren't after humans, they're stalking a much tastier prey. >> in cape cod, every kayakers'

worst fear. you see this man looking over his shoulder in panic. ten feet away the dorsal fin of a great white shark. >> surprised it hasn't happened sooner. we know they're out there. >> the same day in santa cruz, california, a great white took a bite out of this kayak. the man inside thrown into the water but survived. >> sharks in the area at all times. people need to be aware of that and just be careful. >> they're the latest in great white encounters. the hot temperatures bringing them earlier but it's not the people they're after. it's the exploding seal populations that have moved closer to shore. >> sharks are going to go where their food is. >> seals are their food. shark expert ralph collier says seals are protected species so the population has exploded with about a quarter million gray seals on the eastern seaboard alone. sharks, collier says, are not interested in hunting people. >> white sharks specifically are

here's a look at the forecast in some cities. around the country. in d.c., stray thunderstorms, 85. afternoon thunderstorms in atlanta, 92. stray thunderstorms in st. louis, 88. thunderstorms as well in denver, 74. mostly sunny skies in seattle, 80 degrees. relief operations under way in russia after flash floods killed more than 170 people in less than 24 hours from friday into saturday. more than a foot of water came crashing down in southern russia. thousands of homes have been destroyed. residents say a 16-foot wall of water roared through their town. most of the dead were reportedly sleeping when the deluge hit. officially over today after

more than two months of rain fell in one day. the devastating floods left hundreds homeless. forecasters say the worst is over but no sunny weather for the next ten days. one of hollywood's most endearing actors died. ernest borgnine's career spanned more than 60 years. he won an oscar playing a lovesick butcher and had a recurring role on spongebob squarepants. borgnine died sunday. he was 95. manuel gallegus looks at his career. >> ernest borgnine owes his fame with baby boomers to his stint in mchale's navy. his career took off when he was cast as another military man, sergeant judson in 1953's "from here to eternity." >> anybody steps in here, i give it to them first. >> performance lid to numerous supporting roles as heavies in a steady string of dramas and westerns. playing against type, won the academy award as best actor for his role in "marty."
