this is the "cbs evening news." >> glor: good evening everyone i'm jeff glor. the newly minted team of mitt romney and ryan was on the move today. campaigning in virginia and wisconsin. they were also to address voters nationwide on "60 minutes." the republican convention starts two weeks from tomorrow. we have a team of reporters on the trail tonight. we begin with jan crawford in north carolina. >> reporter: it's day two of the bus tour and day two of the ryan romney ticket. greeted by the largest crowds of the campaign he has a new energy and focus. ryan was boldly confident. >> reporter: the surprise announcement came 10 days after romney decided on ryan. a closely guarded secret only a
6:02 pm
handful of people knew. when they met in boston ryan was in disguise wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap in the airport. to get to virginia for the announcement he snuck out of his house and into the back woods to get to his ride. the campaign has refocused into a serious campaign. we can either stay on the current path we are on, a nation in debt, a nation in despair, a nation with high unemployment. and we are giving our children a diminished future or we can change this thing and get the country on the right track. ( cheers and applause ) >> reporter: the pick also refocused the obama campaign. stephanie cutter blasted ryan's budget plan which could cult cut spending and reform medicare.
6:03 pm
>> it says something about mitt whose picks someone with a budget that would be the end of medicare as we know it. it would increase cost for seniors and into the private market. >> reporter: mitt romney was not backing down from the fight. >> i think it's immoral for us to pass on burdens to the next generation. one of the few that stood up and said i have ideas to get america back on track is this person i chose to be my running-mate. ( cheers and applause ) >> reporter: now tonight after big rally in wisconsin. the two are going to part ways ryan is going to iowa and romney to florida. the obama campaign, jeff, is ready. >> glor: jan crawford, thank you. from north carolina the republican candidates moved on to wisconsin. one of the 11 states cbc news calls a battle ground. obama won wisconsin in 2008. with ryan on the ticket they hope to take wisconsin's electoral votes. chip reid is there this evening.
6:04 pm
>> reporter: paul ryan comes home to waukesha wisconsin for a welcome home rally. the ryan campaign hopes this time they'll do better in november. bill campbell is head usher at the catholic church. >> anyone that knows him or talks to him comments on how nice a guy he is. >> reporter: that is a refrain in janesville where ryan has lived. today they taped over the old ryan for congress sign with something new. >> i think he will be the spark plug for the republican party. >> reporter: campbell went to the same high school as ryan and their fathers were law partners. >> this is the patio that ryan laid when he was 16 years of age. >> reporter: when ryan was 16 his father died of a heart attack. tony, a friend, saw how that
6:05 pm
affected ryan first hand. >> i know deep down it really affected him. it also motivated him. deep down he wants his father to be proud of him. >> reporter: he served on junior council with him. >> ryan had the same charisma then. >> reporter: he became one of the party's self described "young guns." ryan's budget has the wrong priorities for the district carried by obama four years ago. >> his budgets calls for turning medicare into a voucher program eventually killing it. >> he challenges for the house seat this november. >> it's past the deadline for him to drop off the ballot. >> as you run against paul ryan what do you think is his great weakness? >> that he thinks he is a economic genius. ask any economist what they think of his budget and it's
6:06 pm
fiction. >> reporter: tomorrow he heads out for the first time as v.p. running mate. the 1st stop is right next store in iowa. jeff? >> glor: chip, thank you very much. the two running mates sat down with bob schieffer. they asked about the budget plan including the proposals that it would hurt medicare. >> what paul ryan and i have talked about is saving medicare. making sure that it's there for current seniors. no changes for current seniors or those nearing retirement. but looking to young people down the road we are going to give you a bigger choice. >> you will have to do a little explaining. >> our point is we need to preserve their benefits because government made promises that they would organization their retirement around.
6:07 pm
in order to make sure we can do that we must reform it for those that are younger. we think they are good reforms with bipartisan origins, they actually started with the clinton commission in the late 90s. to make those promises for the current seniors we need to reform it for the next generation. >> glor: bob also asked them about tax policy and their own individual tax returns. >> how many years of tax returns did you turn over to the campaign? >> well it was very exhaustive vetting process. it's a confidential vetting process. but i'm going to release the same amount of years that govenor romney has. >> how many was that? >> i'm releasing two, which is what he is releasing. >> what i hear from people in around country they are not asking about the tax returns they are asking where the jobs are? i think these are distraction to take us off the fact that the president has given us failed policies that are not working
6:08 pm
and putting us deeper in debt and costing us jobs. we are going to focus on putting people back to work. >> glor: joining us is john dickerson. the romney campaign has made the point that the president should have business or executive level experience. how do they begin to reconcile that with the paul ryan resume? >> that is the biggest complaint that republicans have had with barack obama. paul ryan has no business experience. that would be a big impediment. he wants the vice president to step into the job if that is required. voters are going to look at paul ryan and if he looks like a leader that is all that is important. >> glor: paul ryan does immediately bring some voters to this ticket. who are they and how much? >> conservatives think paul ryan is one of the best leaders in the party. now conservatives were going to
6:09 pm
vote for mitt romney because they don't like barack obama. now they are voting in big numbers and they are coming out because they are enthusiastic and that is a big jolt for the campaign. because they are enthusiastic and that is a big jolt for the campaign. and ryan is a catholic and they are hoping that will help with that group and they are hoping that a generational appeal. ryan is the age of one of romney's sons and they are hoping that voters will be interested in that. >> glor: how does this change the obama strategy? >> if it's sticks to generality. what the obama campaign wants to talk about is specifics. ryan has a lot of specifics about medicare and the social safety net and the obama administration is going to put them out saying mitt romney and paul ryan will change medicare from what we know today. >> glor: president obama did
