a united airlines flight caught fire before taking off in washington state saturday night. officials say the fire on united flight 776 started in the auxiliary power unit. the passengers all got off safely and were put on another plane bound for washington, d.c. a couple hours later. a man with a knife died in a hail of bullets in new york's times square and it was caught on cell phone video. police fire 12 times killing 51-year-old darius kennedy on saturday. he allegedly threatened officers with a knife. police say they pepper sprayed him six times but then he lucked at them so they opened if you remember. commissioner ray kelly says police acted appropriately. cbs "moneywatch" time. the kindle gets nuts and the dark knight is no longer rising. ashley morrison with those stories and more. >> good morning, terrell. prices at the pump are shooting back up again.

"the new york times" said they took a behavior detection class that they say racial profiles middle easterners and other passengers. our boston station, wbz brie sison reports. >> transportation security administration officers screen roughly 80,000 passengers a day at logan airport. now the tsa is investigating its own practices after 32 officers say managers encouraged them to pick out minorities for extra screening. the officers are part of a behavior detection program where they're

temperatures are expected to rise well into the 90s across parts of texas today. that's not expected to help farmers and ranchers weathering the worst drought to hit the u.s. in decades. as manuel bojorquez reports, businesses that have survived generations are at risk. sulfur springs, texas, has a rhythm. >> hello guys. >> that endured decades. >> come on in, girl. >> rancher don smith, 68 years old, loves his way of life. >> we came across here this morning and the cows were getting up and the calves were nursing. gosh, man, it don't get no better than that. >> but smith also knows the hard times. he comes from a family of texas cattlemen, a family that endured a record setting drought that began in 1947 lasting ten years. it ruined thousands of farmers and ranchers.

for the past two years, smith has been fighting again to save his ranch. the latest drought has cut deep into his savings requiring more money to water and to feed his 235 cows. he is not alone. many others are struggling in this northeast texas farmers' co-op. general manager brad johnson. >> it is a one-two punch for the southwest united states when you hitchhike on what we went through last year, which we'll call the big boy. >> why the big boy? >> the big boy drought last year in the state of texas exceeded anything that we had seen in the past. >> johnson says the 6200 members of his co-op are now also suffering from the catastrophic drought gripping the midwest. it has killed the corn that would have fed these texas cows and sent the price of feed soaring. the july report from the u.s. department of agriculture shows the lowest national cattle herd since 1973.

ranchers hear, say the prolonged drought could make the numbers even lower. >> the only place that we have to turn is to liquidate our animals and then somehow look for another livelihood that, in this economy, doesn't seem to be offering a lot of opportunities to a lot people. >> the estimate is that 25% of the ranchers and dairy farmers in this co-op may be on the brink of losing their way of life. >> the best way to put it at this point is let's just all pray for rain. >> and a lot of it. manuel bojorquez, cbs news, sulfur, texas. coming up, reaction to mitt romney's decision to choose paul ryan. as his running mate. wael hear from david axelrod. and more on the allegations of racial profiling at boston's logan airport. john miller has the inside story. and celebrity chef rick baylis stops by on "cbs this morning." for now that will do it for the
