good morning everybody. good to be with you on this busy morning. i'm terrell brown. hurricane isaac pounding the louisiana coast right now. zeroing in on new orleans. isaac is a category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 80 miles an hour. the fierce winds have already knocked out power to more than 300,000 homes and businesses. a tornado reportedly touched down near mobile alabama knocking down trees and power lines and a tornado watch has been issued from louisiana to the florida panhandle. forecasters say the slow-moving storm could dump as much as 20 inches of rain in some areas. david bernard, meteorologist for our miami station, wfor, has the latest. >> isaac continues to move across south louisiana. very intense rain, storm surge and high winds causing lots of power outages across the new orleans area. in fact, the radar overnight indicates that the rain is continuing not only in southeast louisiana, but also in mississippi and alabama. and the winds are going to blow

a lot for the next 48 hours. in fact, the hurricane-force winds are going to be spreading across all of the new orleans area over the next few hours even into southern portions of mississippi and the tropical storm force wind, they are very wide in the yellow area. they extend well to the west and also well to the east of the storm. rainfall potential, that is great. we could be talking locally 15 inches or more in the new orleans area with widespread areas of seeing at least 5 to 10 inches of rain. that's over the next 48 hours as we go into thursday. i'm david bernard for cbs news in miami. and new orleans appears to be ready for hurricane isaac. seven years to the day after katrina devastated that city. but with 80 miles per hour winds, isaac is nowhere near katrina's strength. bigad shaban is in new orleans with more on this. bigad, good morning to you. what's the latest? >> reporter: terrell, right now

really the eye of the storm will move just to the west of us here. the storm is packing winds up to 80 miles per hour and soaking much of coastal louisiana. all of the drainage pumps in the city are on and working. but it's likely that isaac will still flood parts of new orleans. hurricane isaac brought heavy rain and pounding winds to coastal louisiana overnight. but so far, only minor damage. >> our biggest concern is the amount of rain we may be getting. it looks like it could be very, very heavy. >> in the heart of new orleans heeded warnings to stay home allowing police to patrol the streets. about 30 miles south of new orleans in a small town, canals are overflowing and strong winds knocked down trees. it's where commercial fisherman ricky is riding out the storm on his boat. >> got to be in your blood, i guess. i always felt safer on a boat. high waters come and you go up

with the water. >> all along the banks here, sandbags have been set up as well as tube levees filled with water to prevent the highrising bayou from seeping into neighborhoods nearby. the city of new orleans has a much more sophisticated line of defense. against flooding. a $14.5 billion levee system build by the u.s. army corps of engineers. >> i feel pretty good about it. i can't say that i haven't seen a lack of work here in the last couple of years. i'm not worried about it now. >> isaac, which spans nearly 200 miles from the center isn't just hitting louisiana. the storm is stirring up the surf in mississippi and soaking orange beach, alabama. >> if it would have come straight at us and got up to a two, we would have left for sure. >> the slow-moving hurricane could leave behind as much as a foot and a half of rain and a dangerous storm surge. >> isaac is expected to likely bring much-needed rain to arkansas. but terrell, louisiana will have to continue taking the brunt of

the storm. likely through thursday. >> bigad, there's a lot of confidence in that improved levee and pumping system that's out there right now. so much confidence that many residents have decided to stay put. what are they telling you this morning? >> reporter: you know, i think a lot of the residents took the initiative, i think, to leave on their own but many are listening to officials saying listen, this is a different levee system than what failed in this area and so many low-lying communities seven years ago. $14 billion makeover essentially. the city officials are confident it will hold. >> we'll be watching it as well from here. bigad, thank you. tropical storm kirk is gathering strength in the atlantic. has sustained winds of 45 miles per hour and centered 1200 northeast of the northern leeward islands. right now it poses no threat to land. after nearly six years of campaigning and a failed bit at the nomination in 2008. mitt romney will be the republican candidate for

november. he was officially nominated last night. at the gop convention in tampa. getting enough voters to choose him over president obama is key to winning the white house. a new cbs news poll shows that nearly one-third of voters don't have an opinion of him yet. to help wp that, his wife ann took the stage while new jersey governor chris christie dealt out the tough love. susan mcginnis is in tampa with more. good morning to you. >> terrell, good morning. ann romney, governor christie and other here on tuesday did their best to portray mitt romney as competent, experienced and human. mitt romney gave his wife a hug and a kiss after her speech at the republican national convention and the crowd roared. ann romney promised her husband will not fail and she spoke of her personal love story. >> a storybook marriage. nope. not at all. what mitt romney and i have is a real marriage. >> she made a direct appeal to undecided voters.

>> no one will move heaven and earth like mitt romney to make this country a better place to live. >> love was also a theme during new jersey governor chris christie's keynote address. >> love without respect was always fleeting. but that respect could grow into real and lasting love. >> he says politicians are too focused on winning the love of voters and not focused on leading. >> you see, mr. president, leaders don't follow polls, real leaders change polls. today the spotlight turns to vice presidential candidate paul ryan. he will be the featured speaker and will lay out his vision for what a romney-ryan administration would look like. >> ryan arrived in tampa tuesday with his wife and three children. his wife was with him when his husband was officiallily nominated to be the vice presidential candidate >> i move that paul ryan from the state of wisconsin be nominated by acclimation. >> former secretary of state, condoleeza rice and new mexico governor suzanna martinez will

also speak tonight during the televised portion of the convention. now, former candidate rick santorum also spoke last night. he talked a lot about protecting unborn children and he accused the obama administration of gutting the work requirements for welfare. terrell? >> more convention action to come. appreciate it. cbs news political director john dickerson is also at the convention and has more on the speeches from last night. >> it was a night of building up and knocking down at the republican convention. mitt romney's wife, ann romney, built him up talking about the man that she fell in love with so long ago when he picked her up for a date and how he could be trusted. she acted almost as an ambassador to middle class women making a very strong and direct appeal to women saying that she understood what they went through in life. how they kept the household in their head, how they remembered the numbers of the emergency doctors, making an appeal to

women saying that if i trust mitt romney they should too. then, chris christie came out. the governor of new jersey was there to knock them down and he made a very strong indictment against the democratic way of doing things. his argument was republicans have a better way. john dickerson, cbs news, tampa, florida. and cbs news will have continuing coverage of the republican national convention. we'll have live coverage of paul ryan's speech beginning at 10:00 p.m. eastern. president obama is hitting the campaign trail. today he'll be at the university of virginia trying to reenergize students who turned out in record numbers to vote for him in 2008. tuesday he visited iowa state and colorado state universities. of course the gop convention was on his mind. >> it should be a pretty entertaining show. it will be. i'm sure they'll have some wonderful things to say about me. ♪ ♪ trying to jam a little bit. this is at the jet propulsion lab in pasadena, california. they listened to music played back from the mars rover. it's the first music ever broadcast from another planet. the song called reach for the stars was put together by will i am who was on hand for the historic day buy. they're really working that rover, aren't they? cbs "moneywatch" time. the buzz over ben bernanke's speech. massive delays for united airlines. >> ashley morrison with more in new york. >> that's not how we rock out. but that's another story. it was a light trading day for overseas market. the nikkei gained half a% while the hang seng lost a fraction. investors hope to find out what the federal reserve bank plans to do about the sluggish economy when ben bernanke gives a speech on friday. bernanke could announce new measures to boost sluggish growth which may include a third round of bond buying. wall street ended mixed.

the dow jones industrial average lost more than 21 points. while the nasdaq gained almost 4. united airlines is recovering from huge delays and several flight cancellations. passengers faced long lines at several airports monday. at least 200 flights were delayed for more than two hours. the problems stemmed from a computer system at a website that failed. and when it comes to celebrities who make the most money, oprah winfrey is still tops. oprah ranked number one in a forbes magazine survey for the fourth consecutive year with an estimated income of $165 million. transformers director, michael bay, was second with $160 million and filmmaker, steven spielberg ranked third with $130 million. terrell, i kept looking through the list. with both of our incomes combined >> not even close. >> get them oprah. do we want to show them how we rock out? >> you go.

sunny skies. let's check your national forecast. dangerous storm surges from hurricane isaac will continue from louisiana to the florida panhandle. remnants of isaac will bring needed rain from texas to the southeast. tornadoes are possible in the south and northeast will be sunny and dry. look for thunderstorms throughout the west. in sports this morning, two of the american league's best teams found themselves locked in a pitcher's duel last night. the braves visiting the rangers. texas starter looking strong throughout this one. strikes out ten. tampa hitters. in seven innings there. then in the fourth, ranger second baseman kinsler delivers the only offense to speak off. a solo shot to left. texas wins this one 1-0. >> they say baseball is a team game. you better believe it. check this out. astros/giants game. pablo sandoval bobbles a pop fly, then tips it in the air, just before it hits the air, his teammate makes the diving catch for the out. check this out.

mostly sunny skies in denver, 94. mostly cloudy, some showers in seattle, 67 degrees. top stories now on a wednesday. hurricane isaac is pounding the louisiana coast with drenching rain and sustained winds of 80 miles an hour. power has been knocked out to more than 300,000 homes and businesses. it's expected to hammer new orleans today. the seventh anniversary of hurricane katrina. it's official, mitt romney is the republican candidate for president. he was nominated last night at the gop convention in tampa, florida. some of the families of the 12 people killed at a colorado movie theater in july are angry the way a relief fund is being handled. on tuesday, they said more than $5 million was collected but no more than $5,000 had been paid to families facing medical bills and other expenses since the attack. >> nobody is going to get rich by this. in fact, the 12 of us, there's not enough money in the federal

an attempt to restore a 19th century painting in a church gained attention worldwide for all the wrong reasons. the finished result was so badly botched, it's made headlines around the world. the fouled up fresco has fans. elizabeth palmer reports, it's turned a small village into a tourist attraction. >> 400 years of sleepy obscurity ended abruptly at the parish church of boreja, thanks not to a miracle but a botched art restoration that tourists are flocking to see and be seen with. here's the fresco by the 19th century artist elias garcia martinez before and after. the touch-up job by retired parishioner. i wanted to repair the water damage she said and insisted she did have permission from the local priest. >> that's incredibly funny.

it's a creature without a mouth, the hair is all over the place. christ has lost his crown of thorns. in fact, if you looked at it, you wouldn't think of christ at all. you would think of some extraordinary apparition in a zoo. spanish art experts brought in to examine the damage don't know whether to laugh or cry. but online, with a little help from photoshop, the image is a viral joke. it even has its own twitter feed and 20,000 people signed an online petition for the so-called restoration to stay. they may get their way. >> i think it's going to take a long, long time to restore, if indeed it can be restored. i'm quite worried looking at it as to whether they'll ever be able to remove it because by removing it, you may well discover that there's hardly anything left underneath in this little town, gripped by
