that is going to be the talk of today. good morning everybody. good to be with you on a friday. i'm terrell brown. the balloons have fallen, the lights are out at the republican national convention. now the race is on. after years of trying, mitt romney finally accepted his party's nomination last night. during his speech, he talked about his life, his religion, his business background, then went after president obama. his speech was overshadowed by a surreal performance by dirty harry himself. clint eastwood. susan mcginnis is in tampa with more on this. good morning to you. a lot of folks shaking their heads. >> absolutely at clint eastwood's speech and then there's mitt romney, who talking to folks here, he definitely delivered last night. he promised no new taxes on the middle class and 12 million new jobs. mitt romney got a standing ovation as he entered the convention hall for the biggest speech of his life. >> i am proud to introduce to you the next president of the united states of america, mitt

romney. >> and romney wasted little time making his nomination official. >> i accept your nomination for president of the united states. >> he focused on his life, including an emotional nod to his parents. >> my mom and dad were true partners. a life lesson that shaped me by everyday example. when my mom ran for the senate, my dad was there for her every step of the way. >> and then he went to work, laying out why he believes he should win in november. >> i have a plan to create 12 million new jobs. >> and why he thinks president obama should not win. >> you know there's something wrong with the kind of job he's done as president when the best feeling you had was the day you voted for him. >> mitt romney worked for six years to win his party's nomination and after several days of celebrating that achievement, now the real work begins. >> there's a lot of people out there who are grassroots people, and they are a little disappointed to be honest. they're very, very disappointed and i think mitt romney in these

next coming days, weeks, months up until election day, i think he's going to listen. >> the delegates on the convention floor say they are excited to go to work for mitt romney and paul ryan. >> i'm anxious to go back home and work on the campaign and make this a reality. >> so the speech was very well-received by republicans here. possibly eclipsed somewhat by clint eastwood's speech whisk called by some as very bizarre. more on that later. >> we'll be talking about it this morning. susan mcginnis in tampa. sigh susan, good to see you. have a good weekend. romney also spoke out about his religious beliefs. he's the first mormon nominee. for president on a major party ticket. brian montopoli, senior political reporter for cbs.com has more on romney's speech >> mitt romney made the case in tampa that he would be a better steward of the economy than president obama. romney knows that he's not as likeable as president obama.

he suffers from empathy gap. his message was look, obama is a good guy but he's not gotten the job done. in four years as president. he introduced his family. he talked about his faith and fundamentally made the case that, hey, he might not be your best friend, but he's someone that you can trust to turn this economy around. it was not, i would say, the most thrilling speech that's ever been given to wrap up a convention. i think barack obama and george w. bush were more successful speakers, but it did get the job done. mitt romney got through it. he made his case and he should get a small bump from this convention. i'm brian montopoli from tampa. for cbs news. >> a federal court on thursday rejected a new texas voter i.d. law. the judges say the law, which requires voters to show photo identification at the polls discriminates against low income blacks and hispanics. texas officials say they'll appeal to the u.s. supreme court. earlier this week, another -- >> in colorado, officials trying to cut down on voter fraud found

only 16 people out of 4,000 are ineligible to vote. isaac is getting weaker but continues to produce heavy rains, spin off tornadoes and potentially damaging wind gusts. it's now a tropical depression moving slowly across arkansas and southern missouri. the massive storm is blamed for at least two deaths, flooding hundreds of homes and leaving about 900,000 customers without power. drew levinson has more. >> the brunt of isaac has passed but the damage is far from over. rising waters forced more evacuations from la place and reserve, louisiana, with people and animals hurrying to get out. joshua jones is one of the hundreds rescued. they're headed to shelters in shreveport. >> we had to like climb on top of the houses until the boats got will to get us. >> the evacuees in shreveport were already exhausted and hungry. some of them didn't want to be there. >> they forced us. they dragged me out. >> a bird's eye view shows the damage in hard hit plaquemines parish. homes are flooded to the second story and cows stranded on a

small patch of land. >> the national guard along with the sheriff's department and other rescue workers are using this parking lot as a staging area. the reason they're here is because it's one of the few places that has electricity. >> hundreds of thousands of customers are without power across the state. few gas stations are open. and the ones that are have long lines. some people stocked up filling extra containers. a mandatory evacuation order was issued where it swelled banks. >> it's crazy. we moved here after katrina. we're praying that everything will be fine. >> crews are pumping water out of the lake to take pressure off the dam. >> we've got pumps in place here. they're not moving a large volume of water. we're trying to get as much as out as we can. isaac is expected to move north and bring heavy rain into the midwest by the weekend. it could be a couple of weeks before power is restored to everyone here in louisiana. drew levinson, cbs news, la place, louisiana.

from storms to fire, at least nine large wildfires are burning in montana. a fire near roscoe has burned about 1800 acres. it's about 50% contained. 20 homes were ordered to evacuate. officials say the fire started tuesday. high temperatures and high winds are making it difficult for firefighters to battle the flames. and the pentagon is threatening legal action against a former navy seal who wrote a book on the raid that killed osama bin laden. it's called no easy day and set to be released on tuesday. the pentagon says mark owen violated two nondisclosure agreements. he signed with the navy. in a letter sent to owen's attorney, the department of defense says it's considering all legal remedies, which could include prosecuting owen or taking all the royalties raised by the book. coming up on the morning news thon friday, go ahead, make his day. clint eastwood grabs the spotlight at the republican national convention with his off the cuff speech. but first, surprise revelations about the man charged in the colorado movie theater shooting. in the colorado movie theater shooting.

defense attorneys for james holmes, the accused gunman in the colorado shooting rampage, made a surprise announcement. during a court hearing thursday, they said holmes tried unsuccessfully to call his psychiatrist just nine minutes before the attack. holmes attended that court hearing yesterday. here's john blackstone. >> when the package from holmes to dr. fenton was discovered in the university mail room, investigators sent in the bomb squad, fearing it contained explosives. instead, investigators reportedly found a notebook with crude drawings that seemed to suggest planning for a mass murder. while much about holmes remains a mystery, documents from the university of iowa released today give some insight. in his 2010 application to graduate school at the university, holmes wrote, he had a strong desire to explore the unknown. he wrote about working at a camp where children with schizophrenia were heavily medicated saying this did not solve their problems, only create new ones. in response to holmes

application, one university official advised do not offer admission under any circumstances. this time in court james holmes seemed slightly more engaged, talking briefly a couple of times to his defense attorneys. but he still often had that strange wide-eyed look as he peered around the courtroom. i did not see him look directly at the psychiatrist who once treated him at the university of colorado. john blackstone, cbs news, centennial, colorado. >> cbs "moneywatch" time now on this friday. the buildup for ben bernanke's speech. retail spending rebounds. ines ferre with more. >> good morning terrell. how the stock markets move could depend on what the federal chairman says. bernanke is expected to give his assessment of the struggling u.s. economy during a meeting of bankers in wyoming. investors will be looking for signs about what the fed may do next. to prop it up. more worries about china's growth sent market down. tokyo's nikkei dropped 1.5% to hit a four-week closing low.

hong kong's hang seng lost a quarter of a percent. wall street stocks ended lower as investors wait to hear what bernanke says. thursday, the dow industrial average lost 106 points, the nasdaq was down 32. consumers did some spending this summer. some of the nation's major retailers say august sales were up 6% in august. the best performance since march. and industry trade groups back to school buying drove sales higher. amazon says the kindle fire tablet computer is sold out. the tablet was launched last november. amazon won't say how many were sold but it captured about 22% of u.s. tablet sales making it the second most popular tablet. amazon is expected to announce a new model for the holiday season next week. for the first time mcdonald's is advertising in a new language. a sign in st. paul reads, $1,

would be his last tournament before he retires. roddick was once the number one ranked player in the world. when his only grand slam title at the u.s. open. on the court thursday, roger federer continued his quest for a second straight grand slam title. he knocked off his opponent in straight sets. >> in baseball, the chicago cubs come out on top in a wrigley field slug-fest. the cubs trailed the brewers by six runs but tied it up in the sixth on a bases loaded single by brett jackson. the cubbies will be down two runs in the bottom of the ninth but soriano delivers a walk-off single to center to hand chicago a 12-11 victory. the oakland a's kin continue their push for the post-season. oakland gets four home runs, including josh reddick they top the indians for the sixth win in a row. finally, a bizarre play by both teams. get this. in a college football game. n kent state, punting the ball. watch what happens here. the ball hits a player, it's a

>> how do you handle promises that you've made when you're running for election? i think it may be time. what do you think for maybe a businessman, how about that? >> at one point, even fielding a question from the imaginary president. >> what do you want me to tell romney? i can't tell him to do that. can't do that to himself. >> the convention crowd seemed to enjoy eastwood. but the off the cuff remarks left political commentators scratching their heads wondering if he had taken the spotlight off mitt romney's speech. >> this speech is going to make the front page of the new york times and the washington post but the talk shows, all the morning shows, he's going to be competing for attention with clint eastwood. i just think that's not a very good political strategy. >> i'll start it. you finish it. go ahead.

all: make my day. >> the reaction online to eastwood's appearance was swift. a twitter account called @invisible obama popped up within minutes gaining tens of thousands of followers. the president himself offered a response on the social networking site. his official account tweeting a picture of mr. obama sitting in his official chair with the message, "this seat is taken." >> eastwood is no stranger to politics. he's a registered republican but has supported democrats in the past. in 1986, he was elected mayor of carmel by the city of california. finally a presidential race playing out in nevada. two pigs hoofed it out to the finish line. look at 'em go. in a race to predict the next president, in the end, the pig representing president obama won in a photo finish by a snout. the predictions aren't always accurate. in 2008, the pigs predicted john mccain would win. we know how that played out. after your local news on "cbs this morning," a wrap of the republican national convention. i'm terrell brown. this is the "cbs morning news." in his speech last night, mitt romney said his focus as president will be to create millions of new jobs. that message is expected to resonate with middle class americans who have seen their futures dim during the economic downturn. they're also paying attention to romney's and president obama tax policies. anthony mason compared them. to see how they would affect the middle class. >> in middletown, ohio, deanna and terry shores consider themselves and their two boys a typical middle class family. >> what would be the difference between a report and essay? >> deanna teaches english at miami university. terry teaches middle school. both have masters degrees. >> we're middle class, two professional homes. we thought it would look a certain way and be a certain way. >> do you feel like the middle class actually gets lost in the middle? >> we kind of get looked at as well, they're doing okay and we're not. we're struggling to maintain the notion of america.

>> on the streets of middletown, the signs of that economic struggle are everywhere. back in 1957, look magazine gave middletown it's all america city award. but a lot has changed. 50 years later, forbes magazine ranked it one of america's fastest dying towns. >> as businesses have left, the poverty rate has soared here. and the american dream feels more elusive for families like the shores. >> my grandfather built engines for g.e. he created a very nice life for my mother. >> do you still believe in that dream? >> yes. and i want it. i work really hard every day to have a little piece of it. >> in fact, middle class americans saw their median wealth decline by 28% in the decade ending in 2010. both presidential candidates are promising help. >> i will not raise taxes on middle income americans. >> republican mitt romney is proposing cuts in each of the six tax rates.
