his remarks last spring that 47% of americans are dependent on the government, believe they are victims and not his problem to worry about. romney's 47% comment forced his campaign into days of damage control but a "usa today" gallup poll found 53% of independent voters found romney's comments will make no difference. 29% are less likely and 15% are more likely. susan mcginnis is following it from washington. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we did not hear before this hispanic audience romney mention that 47% number. on wednesday it was all about romney saying his campaign is about 100% of america. mitt romney tried to court the hispanic vote wednesday at a rally in miami. >> this party is the natural home for hispanic-americans because this is the party of opportunity and hope. ours is the party that will bring a brighter future.

our party is the party of greatness. this is why hispanic-americans will join this campaign. we'll win because we'll get the support of you and your friends. >> reporter: he answered questions about immigration on univision. a spanish language tv network. >> i'm not in favor of a deportation, massive deportation rounding up 12 million people and taking them out of the country. >> reporter: the toughest question of the day was the comment that 47% of americans believe they are victims entitled to government handouts. >> translator: some people think you are dividing the united states and underestimating 47% of the population. >> my campaign is about the 100% in america and i'm concerned about it. this is a campaign about helping people who need help and right now the people who are poor in this country need help getting out of poverty. >> reporter: romney's 47% comment could hurt him come election day. gallup has released a new poll that shows many americans are

turned off by what he said. a third of voters surveyed said they are less likely to vote for romney because of what he said. 20% said his words make them more likely to vote for him. 43% said it won't make a difference. romney says he was talking about how the president's economic policies have led more americans to seek government help. >> the president cares about the people of america. i care about the people of america. he doesn't know what it takes to help the people of america but i do. i'll get them working again. >> reporter: president obama gets his turn today at the univision candidate forum. romney didn't give any details about his immigration plan. when president obama faces this group today he'll likely get some tough questions about what many perceive as his failure to overhaul the immigration system. >> susan mcginnis in washington this morning. tharng you so much. on that note in arizona police have begun enforcing the provision of the state's tough immigration law the so-called

show me your papers provision. a campaign to have illegal immigrants remain silent if they are pulled by police has begun across the state. a hotline to answer immigration questions is up and running. john blackstone has more. >> reporter: daniella cruz was brought to america from mexico. she is an undocumented immigrant and drives without a license. arizona's new law means she can face more than a ticket if stopped by police. police here are required to determine the immigration status of a person stopped or arrested if there's a quote reasonable suspicion they are in the u.s. illegally. but phoenix police chief says no one will be stopped without cause. >> before you have reasonable suspicion that someone is here illegally you have to have reasonable suspicion as a police officer that a crime has occurred before you have reasonable suspicion on the documentation or not. >> is a crime not stopping fully at a stop sign? >> yes. >> reporter: suspects will be held while officers check with federal officials at i.c.e.

immigration and customs enforcement. >> the question is how long will we detain them? it should be no longer than any other traffic stop. ten minutes at the most. if i have answers then we have an answer. if they don't answer then we have an obligation to let that citizen go. >> reporter: but civil rights advocates will be watching for signs of racial profiling. >> they say they can enforce the law without racial profiling. >> law enforcement is saying trust us. we know better. we're not going to engaging racial profiling. the reality is that they are ignoring a very real problem of racial profiling that we have had in this state for a very long time. >> federal authorities say they will answer calls from arizona to check immigration status but take illegal immigrants in to custody only if they are violent criminals or caught repeatedly crossing the border. john blackstone, cbs news,

phoenix. secretary of state hillary clinton briefed lawmakers on capitol hill today about the deadly attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya. yesterday a senior official said that christopher stevens and three others died in a terrorist attack. fbi investigators arrived in libya and should reach benghazi in a few days. an actress that appears in the anti-islam film that triggered riots across the middle east is suing the filmmaker. she said she was unaware of the anti-islam content. glenn dougherty was buried yesterday. he was working as a private security guard at the consulate. he had been in libya two weeks when he was killed. glenn dougherty was 42 years old. cbs money watch. hundreds of flight cancellations for american airlines and american eagle and who is the biggest loser on forbes richest american list? that doesn't even sound right. >> reporter: you can be much of

a loser there. good morning. labor strike is forcing american airlines and its regional carrier american eagle to cancel 300 flights this week. pilots have been calling in sick after rejecting the company's last contract offer. there's been an increase in the number of maintenance reports filed by flight cruise. american airlines is going through bankruptcy restructuring. asian stocks dipped after news that china's output hit a new low. there are new signs that the nation's battered housing market continues to make a slow but steady recovery. home resales increased 7.8% last month, and the commerce department says new construction was up more than 2% last month from july. the encouraging housing news gave the stocks a lift. the dow jones industrial gained 13 points while the nasdaq gained four points. chick-fil-a apparently is backing away from the

controversy over gay rights and marriage. the restaurant chain issue ad statement wednesday saying it had stopped funding organizations opposed to same sex marriage. the company's president sparked a controversy during the summer when he said he opposed same sex marriage. the number of americans facing a penalty for not buying health insurance is much higher than previous estimates. the nonpartisan congressional budget office says the penalty will hit almost 6 million americans, most would be middle class. the figure is 50% higher than the cbo's previous estimate. the average penalty will cost about $1,200. microsoft co-founder bill gates topped "forbes" magazine annual list as the richest man in america as he has in previous years. but mark zuckerberg was the biggest loser on the 400 wealthiest americans. he tumbled to 36 on the list from number 14. facebook's lackluster stock price cost him more than $1

billion in net worth. no worry. "forbes" magazine says his net worth is estimated still at almost $9.5 billion. >> had to look down to make sure that was right number. >> not too much of a loser. >> i'm sure he's sweating over that $8 billion. coming up. left hanging. nearly two dozen amusement park riders get stuck hundreds of feet in the air and it's not the first time that this ride has had problems. this is the morning news.

it was supposed to be a three minute ride at a california amusement park. instead the wind seeker stalled leaving fun seekers dangling 20 feet in the air for almost four hours. workers were able to lower the ride to the ground to get the people down. the ride had also stalled about two weeks ago. that's the kind of thing they don't tell you when you get on it.

it remains closed this morning. a house committee is expected to hear testimony today in the controversial fast and furious gun trafficking operation. the only witness is the inspector general. on wednesday he issued his report which cleared attorney general eric holder. >> reporter: two senior justice department officials are leaving their job after reports from the inspector general faulted the agency's gun trafficking probe fast and furious. jason weinstein and kenneth melson said they disagreed with finding. it found no one at the justice department or atf considered the consequences of allowing thousands of guns to end up in the hands of mexican drug cartels. two of them ended up in 2010 at the murder scene of brian terry. the report didn't criticize eric holder but said his deputies

should have briefed him about the investigation much earlier. >> allowing guns to walk whether in this administration or the prior one is wholly unacceptable. i've been consistent on this. i've said this from day one. >> reporter: holder became the center of an investigation on capitol hill. >> when we ask a legitimate question about brian terry's murder, about fast and furious, we were lied to. >> resolution is agreed to. >> reporter: the republican led house voted in june to hold him in contempt for failure to turn over documents in the investigation. holder cited executive privilege. the inspector general is set to testify about his report before the house oversight committee on thursday. up next, your thursday morning weather and in sports, cabrera pushes his team towards the playoff while making major league history.
