[ laughter ] >> here's a live look at the golden gate bridge. everything is moving fine so far across the deck no hot spots across the bay area. you will find roadwork in marin county. more coming up. >> thank you. chances are if you didn't see it you heard the giant meteor passing over the bay area last night. this is surveillance video footage from the lick observatory. the large car sized space rock passed last night. it was traveling relatively slowly compared to others

indicating its large size. the object broke up gradually as passed through earth's atmosphere sprinkling meteorites in the hills north of martinez. former cbs 5 producing behind spotted the phenomenon while walking his dog. >> saw this bright light and looked up and saw streaking across like fireworks but it was so bright and intense. you could tell it wasn't fireworks. >> some witnesses reported a large boom after it was so loud, they thought it was an earthquake. local stargazers lit up twitter their observations. fireball, long green gold &d trail." oakland is reportedly thinkg of contr ith outside law >> pretty cool. >> we go to bed too early. >> miss everything.

it is 4:31. oakland is thinking of contracting with an outside law enforcement agency to beef up police presence on city streets. cbs 5 reporter anne makovec joins us now -- joins us now from oakland with more. >> reporter: the oakland pd is thinking of asking for help with officers from the alameda county sheriff's office and the chp. this would be a temporary fix until the next group of cadets graduates from the oakland police academy next year. city officials say they need help now because major crime is up 20%, burglaries up 40% and there have been 100 homicides. the police force is now at 629 officers. that is down from 837 just four years ago. discussions are now starting between the city and the sheriff's department which says it would provide deputies if the city and police union can figure out a plan.

that's one of the problems. oakland has no money for extra first right now. their salaries would be almost $160,000 at least one city council member saying that they could end up dipping into reserves. oakland police hope they can solve a murder case from a year ago. charles butler was killed december 22, 2011, after bumping the fender of another car on the city's north side. the video shows two suspects arguing with butler, who is seen in a white hoodie here. investigators say the two men later followed butler and shot him a few blocks away. >> not only are they murderers, they are thieves. they stole my brother's future. he was on the way to doing good things. >> police hope witnesses will come forward. police in pacifica have arrested a man in connection with a murder. officers were called to the home on dell road early

yesterday morning after reports of a disturbance. that's where they found the body of 24-year-old keith cough coffee. mother nature was the star of the major league baseball play-offs yesterday raining out one game and delaying another for hours. that would be the giants game in st. louis. san francisco did get it play against the cardinals but it took a while. starting pitcher matt cain gave up two runs in the 3rd inning. cards led 3-1 in the 7th inning with blinding rain taking over delaying the game nearly 3.5 hours. the game finally resumed. st. louis hung on to that 3-1 lead and grabbed the win. >> you know, you understand that that's the way it's going to be sometimes. make some tough pitches and you have to move on and try to get the job doesn't next time. >> game 4 all set to go tonight in the gateway city with the cardinals leading 2-1 games.

detroit tigers and the yankees never got to start playing thanks to that same rain. game 4 now scheduled for this afternoon. the tigers lead that series 3-0 games and need just one more victory to advance to the series and sweep the yankees right out of the play-offs. time now 4:35. no rain here, but that could change in a few days. >> all thanks to a good-looking high pressure system. >> high pressure system, yes. absolutely. >> according to liz right now. >> it's bringing us offshore winds. it made for a beautiful day outside although the fire danger still high in the north and east bay hills. look at the temperatures. 65 degrees right now in pacifica. 64 in san francisco. 49 in santa rosa. 55 degrees in livermore. throughout the day today, lots of sunshine at the beaches, almost a carbon copy of yesterday, although we may begin to see a little sea breeze developing at the coastline so you may see temperatures soar early on and cool later part of the afternoon. all right. we are going to stay warm,

though, outside today. these temperatures on average usually in the 70s. by this afternoon 14 degrees above the average in livermore 91, 90 concord, about 80 degrees again in san francisco. but there is some rain in the forecast. we'll talk more with that coming up in a few minutes. right now let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> thank you, lawrence. let's take you out towards the south bay. we have a photographer this morning showing you 101 traffic in san jose. this is by the mckee exit obviously traffic very light this morning at 4:36. so so far, so good between san jose or if you are commuting towards santa clara. elsewhere bridges bay bridge toll plaza hardly a car there heading towards the bay gates. obviously no metering lights, no delay into san francisco. and i'm not seeing any overnight roadwork across the span. where you will find roadwork is in marin county into novato westbound 37 that connector ramp to southbound 101 is shut down. caltrans crews are still hard at work until with 5:00. that's when they are telling us they hope to pick up that ramp closure and reopen lanes. in the meantime more roadwork this time on the approach to

the golden gate bridge. you'll notice it slowing down your drive times so you will see it between sir francis drake and the waldo tunnel ongoing paving work in that area. they may be doing lane changes now. that's what those flashing lights are you see on the right side of your screen. else where to the east bay now, 880 in oakland, here's a live look tenements by the oakland at the nimitz by the oakland coliseum. no problems. at the maze quiet looking good towards the dublin interchange. that is traffic. back to you guys. >> today a former santa clara county health administrator charged with 18 drug-related felonies will appear in court. dr. marvin bonham is accused of trading prescription drugs like oxycontin for cash and methamphetamines. prosecutors also say he wrote prescriptions for people with criminal drug histories. until last week, he worked as the medical director in the

valley health plan. investigators have trying to find the suspect who pulled off a brazen midday robbery in palo alto. police say this man entered the star 1 credit union just before 11:00 yesterday morning. he then quickly jumped over the teller counter and grabbed an unknown amount of cash from the drawers. at least one witness said the suspect was carrying a gun. he was last seen running eastbound on ventura avenue. there's a very angry elmo walking the streets of san francisco at least a man dressed like elmo. his name is adam sandler not related to the actor. the colorful character has been arrested for harassing tourists and spewing anti-semitic rants in new york city. sand slower now popping up in fisherman's wharf and -- sandler is now popping up in fisherman's wharf and richmond. passersby are not exactly tickled. >> this is a family area a big tourist area. i don't think this is something that families should be listening to. i don't think this is something right for the area. >> sandler admits he was

deported from cambodia in 1999 for running a porn website. he now makes money on small donations from tourists. other bay area headlines we're following, a livermore man is the first person in alameda county to be treated for west nile virus this year. county officials say he first reported symptoms in late september and is currently recovering. this brings the total number of cases in california to 277. a historic air force radar tower south of san jose will stay standing for now. the government agency that owns the 80-foot-high structure on mount umunum had been trying to figure out how to keep it from being demolished. last night they decided to leave it intact for five years while money is raised to repair it. this morning, bay area students will drop and cover as part of the "great california shake-out." the statewide drill teams the proper techniques to prevent injuries during the next big quake. emergency crews will also me hers their disaster response

plans. 4:39. a man is being held without bail in new york accused of plotting to blow up the federal reserve building. kwauzi nafis a native of bangladesh was arrested yesterday after a sting operation. federal investigators say he parked a van filled with what he believed were explosives outside the building and then tried to detonate it with a cell phone. the bomb was not real because his associates were actually undercover officers. >> this individual came here with the express purpose of committing a terrorist act. he was motivated by al qaeda. so we see this threat as, you know, being with us for a long time to come. >> nafis did not enter a plea during a brief court appearance in brooklyn yesterday afternoon. in the race for the white house, president obama and mitt romney will make another joint appearance this evening at a new york event with a lighthearted tradition. the alfred e. smith memorial foundation dinner raises money

days once again, very similar to yesterday. mid-70s at the coastline. 80s inside the bay. even some low 90s the hottest spots inland. looks like this ridge is going to bring us one more day of this very nice weather then things begin to change as high pressure is going to weaken. you have the trough approaching the coastline. that sea breeze may quick in as early as the afternoon and cool down the temperatures tomorrow. fire danger still high. red flag warnings up in the north and east bay hills until 8 a.m. still could see some gusty winds to about 20 miles per hour. but overall, what a beautiful day it's going to be again. enjoy it. 85 degrees in san jose. 86 mountain view, about 76 degrees in pacifica. east bay temperatures up into the 80s and some low 90s. and inside the bay a beautiful day to get out there and enjoy it if you can. 84 degrees in oakland. about 80 in san francisco. even 75 degrees in daly city. next couple of days, the temperatures start to cool down. fog returns to the bay area tonight into tomorrow. more fog and clouds over the weekend. and speaking of clouds, they really roll in come monday,

tuesday and wednesday. maybe some rain to start out this whole next week. that's a look at the weather. elizabeth. >> 90s to 60s. big drop, thanks, lawrence. let's go outside once again show you some of our live traffic cameras. this is the san mateo bridge. right side of your screen commute direction westbound 92 and as you can see it looks great both directions. about a 13 or 14-minute drive time. so this connector ramp, you may find this a surprise. it was there yesterday. it's closed if you are heading into marin countiful westbound 37 to southbound 101. caltrans crews are busy out there now but they are scheduled to reopen that ramp in 15 minutes. southbound 101 more paving work there all the way down southbound and northbound 101. this time causing delays from sir francis drake to the waldo tunnel. the bridge itself looks good all the way down towards doyle drive into san francisco. through the east bay you can see a lot of our live drive time sensors showing

green which means speeds over 40 miles an hour. you can see one of them right now 62 as you make your way through berkeley. so pretty quiet if you're coming down the eastshore freeway, 18 minutes is that drive time in the westbound lanes from the carquinez bridge to the maze. along the peninsula, they have been doing this ongoing roadwork as well near embarcadero coming into palo alto northbound and southbound 101. you will find various on- and off-ramps closed until 5 a.m. a look at the nimitz, 880 through oakland past the coliseum looking great towards downtown oakland and the macarthur maze. more traffic in a bit. in the meantime back to you guys. the numbers are up again today in the deadly fungal meningitis outbreak. the centers for disease control reports 19 people have died and 245 others have been infected. fda investigators raided the massachusetts company that is behind the deadly outbreak. the center recalled all its drugs and says it's cooperating with authorities. a colorado judge is

allowing prosecutors to examine university records of the man charged in the colorado theater shootings. prosecutors say the records could help establish a motive for the july 20 shoot that is killed 12 and injured 58. lawyers for alleged gunman james holmes called the records irrelevant and accused the prosecution of conducting a fishing expedition. a texas judge will decide today whether a group of high school cheerleaders can continue to display religious banners at football games. cheer squad signs using bible verseses have been banned at kuntz high. opponents say it violates the first amendment. a state judge issued an injunction allowing the banners until today's ruling. the boy scouts of america are set to release confidential documents they kept on men suspected of child abuse. the perversion files will be revealed as part of a court order. the documents were compiled between 1965 and '85. the boy scouts have pledged to

review the files and report offenders who may have previously avoided legal prosecution. a bay area boy scout kicked out of the organization because he is gay is fighting this afternoon to be reinstated. today 18-year-old ryan anderson will deliver a petition with more than 400,000 names on it to the boy scouts council in pleasant hill. the boy scouts denied the moraga teen his eagle scout badge after he told his troop leader he is gay. university of phoenix is phasing out 115 locations nationwide. the company that owns the school says it's all part of a plan to cut $300 million in operating costs by 2014. the changes will affect around 13,000 students and about 800 employees will lose their jobs. no word on how the four bay area campuses will be affected. the growing burden of student loan debt among recent grads has hit a record high. the average 2011 grad walked the graduation stage owing

nearly $27,000 in outstanding loans up 5% from 2010. the institute for college access and success says tuition, fees, the availability of financial aid and a tough job market also factor into the debt students pile up. one year in and we are getting results of a bold ultimatum to get truant kids back in the classrooms. when solano county created its first truant court students got letters warning them about what could happen if they skip class nine or more times. since then 41 parents have been brought in facing legal action because their children are still playing hooky. >> takes a lot of time. i don't really, you know, like to have to go to court. but, you know, if it's going to help my daughter and, you know, scare her into going or whatever it's going to take, i'm there for it. >> so far, the judge hasn't handed out any fines or jail time. the court appearances seem to be doing the trick. >> i think it was just maybe the kids just kind of got a little bit scared coming in front of a judge because they

developing cancer. it's a new study. it followed 15,000 older healthy men for a decade and found 8% fewer cancer cases among daily multivitamin users without a family history of the disease. doctors say you can get trim the benefits simply by eating right, exercising and not smoking. but if you want that extra boost, just don't overdo it. >> certainly the american way is that if a little is good you should take a lot and you will get some kind of multiplicative effect. there is no evidence that take more than one multivitamin a day will have any impact. >> since the study only followed older men, it's unclear whether women or younger people will get the same benefit. restless and choppy sleep may put your at risk for alzheimer's or severe memory impairment according to researchers at massachusetts general hospital and u-penn. preliminary studies indicate a correlation between poor sleep habits and memory problems.
