good evening. thank you for joining us for this special edition of cbs 5 eyewitness news. aim ann notarangelo. in developing news out of san francisco tonight, hazmat crews have evacuated a block in the north beach area of san francisco tonight on powell street between green and vallejo streets. police responded to a call of an apparent suicide about three hours ago. emergency responders smelled chemicals when they got to the scene. 15 people inside the building have been evacuated. firefighters are now inside the building, trying to disburse the chemical to make it safe for people to return. stargazers awed by this week's meteor sightings will get another chance. in the hours before dawn,

tomorrow will be the best time to see the orionid meteor shower. the cosmic phenomena occurs as the earth moves through debris left by halley's comet. >> it's not related. it's as if you were having a big dinner party, and this strange, non-family member showed up just before things got underway. >> the best time to see it will be after midnight and before dawn. just a reminder to all drivers. the san mateo bridge is closed this weekend for repairs and earthquake retrofitting. you're looking at a live picture of the bridge where work began last night. it's going on around the clock. 12 30-foot sections of the san mateo bridge will be replaced. the work stems from a crack found on the bridge during a routine inspection two years ago. the bridge is expected to reopen 5 a.m. on monday morning. drivers may want to take either

the bay bridge or dunbar bridge as alternate routes. head to our website, cbssf.com, and click on current traffic conditions on the front page for more information. governor jerry brown was in san francisco today, campaigning for his tax initiative, proposition 30, one of two competing tax measures on the california ballot. if passed it would bring in an estimated $6 billion a year by temporarily raising the income tax on the state's highest earners. it would also raise the sales tax by a quarter percent. >> it's about kids. it's about teachers. it's also about the credit rating in california. it's about social harmony. >> it's a big scam. they could go fix it. they could start by auditing every department. they're avoiding doing what's really necessary, which is a total overhaul of the budgeting process.

>> if prop 30 doesn't pass, it would trigger $6 billion in automatic cuts, most of it to schools. one competing factor, prop 38, it's also a tax measure on the ballot. and with just two days before the third and final showdown, both presidential candidates have now headed to their debate preparation corners. tonight, president obama is huddling with senior advisories in a hideaway in maryland. republican challenger mitt romney is in florida all weekend, also teaming with advisories. they're heavily targeting florida, the most crucial of all swing states. the final debate will be held at lynn university in boca raton, florida. you can watch the final presidential debate live, right here on cbs 5 on monday starting at 6 p.m. the topic will be foreign policy. six bank towers broke out in -- bank employees broke out

in hives after a customer dropped off money wrapped in a paper towel at the chase bank. the employees immediately had trouble breathing and felt itchy. they are expected to be okay. meanwhile, the stack of money has been taken to a crime lab for testing. police are now questioning the customer but no arrests have been made. fire crews are gaining ground in their fight against a wildfire. evacuation orders were lifted today. fire officials say the blaze is now 90% contained. and full containment is expected sometime tomorrow. the fire started thursday afternoon outside the community of lower lake near highway 29. it scorched about 300 acres and destroyed one home. several outbuildings and vehicles were also destroyed. today is the day when people in most of santa clara county have to change the way they dial phone numbers. the new 669 area code has been

introduced to the 408 area. people who currently have the traditional 408 numbers will keep that area code. but everyone in the region will have to dial one plus the area code before the seven-digit number, even on local calls. if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. that's what a joining number of brick and mortar stores are doing this holiday season. >> reporter: price-conscious shoppers do it all the time. >> have you ever show-roomed? >> reporter: few of them actually know what it is. >> do you know what show- rooming is? >> no, i do not. >> reporter: showrooming is when you go into a place like target or best buy and you look at the items, then you look online and you find a better price and find it there. >> okay. all the time. >> reporter: whether or not you know what it's called, consumers often use brick-and- mortar stores as a showroom for

online purchasers. consumer psychologist kate says stores have been trying to fight it for years. but if last year's holiday retail numbers are any indicator, they're fighting a losing battle. >> i think several retailers, including target, are saying i give up. let me give you the best price right here in the store. >> reporter: target has now joined best buy in what seems to be a growing price-matching trend. best buy's program is already underway, excluding thanksgiving weekend and cybermonday. they're price-matching most online competitors. target has narrowed it down to just five. but will this really put on end

>> reporter: three women met today. >> but look at that. that's such a smile. >> reporter: to remember a friend they loved and loss. >> she was the healthiest person i knew. >> she chose to live well. she just had that love inside her and that inner strength. >> reporter: her name? andrea fisher. at page 25, a few months before she got married, andrea noticed a sore in her mouth that wouldn't go away. the diagnosis? oral cancer. >> she just was always there to give you a smile, a support and a hug. >> reporter: andrea underwent treatment, had three children, but the cancer kept coming back. >> a lot of surgeries. and i think that part is just so tough, for a mom who is just so strong and athletic. >> reporter: at 42, andrea died. heavy drinkers and smokers are

at high risk for oral cancer, but she did neither. doctors believe her cancer was linked to hpv. >> these are starting to show up in patients in their 30's and 40's and they've lived healthy life styles. they exercise. they don't use anything that are considered toxic to their bodies. >> reporter: dr. john is the head and neck surgeon at stanford. he believes in the next several years, doctors will see more hpv-linked oral cancer than cervical cancer. andrea's family believes in addition to screening, prevention is key, and points to the hpv vaccine. >> too late to prevent it for our generation, but not for the next. and good evening, everybody. we certainly do have rain in the forecast. we'll pinpoint when you should

the building deepening marine layer. meanwhile, we're looking at nothing going on pretty much in and around the bay area. we do have the clouds off shore. clear skies on shore. 46 overnight tonight. 54 mountview. upper 40's from vacaville through fairfield. that is a cold front that will be bringing significant rainfall for the first time this season as high pressure is beginning to relax and give way. so we're trying to get track of how much rain you can anticipate. looks like by the tail end of the morning commute, boy, over 3/10 of an inch of rain in san francisco. that's a lot of rain for this first system. expect slick roadways for the morning commute on monday and longer commute times as well. only 4/100 of an inch in san jose. by the evening hours, we'll start to see more rain move back in. the heaviest rain in the morning hours on monday. a bit of a break during the day

with only scattered showers and then we're talking about a second wave moving in at about 10 on monday night. the heaviest will be north by the golden gate bridge. as far as affecting anything tomorrow, just increasing cloud cover, partly sunny to mostly cloudy conditions as the day wears on for the raiders. not bad football weather, 70 degrees. looks like we have a winter storm watch that does go into effect on monday. we could see as much as six inches of snowfall. falling temperatures tomorrow, in and around the bay area. 60's at the coast. upper 60's peninsula to morgan hill. warmest conditions east of the bay, well inland. central bay talking about 60's. and about 11 degrees cooler in santa rosa. here's your extended forecast. rain on monday. a lingering shower tuesday. another shower possible on wednesday.

>> next thing i knew i was down. >> reporter: oakland photographer caught the shot. he caught the officials huddling at midfield. 20 second later... >> looks like a streak person had gotten on the field. he's the first person who signals touchdown is good. then it's just insanity. >> it became just pandemonium which was great. >> it was brutal. >> reporter: fans mobbed the field. cal got the trophy, known as the ax. to this day, the play remains controversial, if not hotly disputed among ardent stanford fans. >> the bear would not die. >> reporter: as for moen and tyrrell, after viewing our footage, they offer each other a few words of advice. >> if you're out on the field, strap it on. >> i would say to kevin, you gotta hit me harder if you wanna keep me down. >> reporter: yes, indeed. the rivalry continues. dennis o'donnell, cbs 5. >>
