the final face off, president obama and mitt romney go head-to-head in one last debate before election day. salon shooting a gunman targets a popular day spa shooting seven women during a terrifying rampage. >> ten people came running out of the back of salon with their hands up running, screaming out the door. decision day. cycling's governing body rules on whether lance armstrong lifetime ban from the sport and erase seven tour de france victories. this is the "cbs morning news" for monday, october 22, 2012. good morning. thanks for joining us this morning. i'm annemarie green. president obama and mitt romney will meet for their third and final debate tonight, the topic is foreign affairs and the attack on the u.s. consulate in libya and iran's nuclear program are expected to be on the agenda.

most polls indicate a very tight race and with just over two weeks to go, tonight's meeting could prove pivotal. susan mcginnis is in washington. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the two candidates spent largely out of the public eye intensively preparing for tonight, the president up at camp david, mitt romney in florida. no one would have predicted this final debate that isn't even focused on the economy could be this critical to the outcome. the stage is set for the third presidential debate. >> this debate matters more than ever before. >> reporter: tonight's focus, foreign policy and there's no shortage of issues. >> after a decade of war, both in afghanistan and iraq, the most important thing we have to do now is bring american troops home. >> imposing sanctions on the iranians. >> we'll do nothing without coordinating with israel. >> reporter: on sunday, marco

rubio said president obama tried to keep the focus on the death of bin laden. >> they told us the incident in libya was an uprising. and not a terrorist attack because it ran counter to their campaign narrative. >> reporter: campaign officials say it's not their candidates who is playing politics with libya. >> while the flames were burning in benghazi, mitt romney was sending out press releases. >> reporter: president obama holds a lead in the polls going into the debate but mitt romney's performance has lifted the numbers to where now there's a dead heat in the polls. >> the president created this false image in the mind of some voters which was knocked down. >> reporter: the obama campaign says this is exactly how they envisioned the race playing out. >> this is going to be a very close race. we've said that consistently. we feel good about where we are. we feel we are even ahead. >> reporter: there are 15 days left until election day. now this final debate comes with

41 out of 50 states essentially already decided. this is why the candidates are concentrating on nine jalt battleground states, including florida. >> cbs news coverage of tonight's debate begins at 9:00 p.m. eastern time. police in wisconsin say yesterday's deadly shooting at a popular spa was the result of a domestic dispute. the gunman opened fire at a spa west of milwaukee yesterday morning. three women were killed and four others wounded. the apparent target was the gunman's wife. drew levinson has the report. >> reporter: police say a man looking for his wife opened fire inside this brookfield wisconsin day spa. >> ten people came running out of the back of the salon with their hands up running, screaming out the door. >> reporter: all the victims were women. three dead, four injured. with help from local, state and federal agencies police searched the 9,000 square foot spa for

hours, looking for the suspect, 45-year-old radcliff franklin haughton. they finally found him dead inside. he had shot himself. haughton's wife worked at the spa. police confirmed she had recently taken out a restraining order against her husband after a confrontation earlier this month at the spa. >> in that incident, witnesses stated that the suspect fired at his wife's vehicle. >> haughton's father doesn't understand why this happened. >> i love my son. i don't approve of what he did. and it's been a shock to all the family. >> reporter: this is the second mass shooting in less than three months in the milwaukee area. in august a man opened fire killing six people in a sikh temple in oak creek. >> when it hits close to home it

gets your attention. >> reporter: both president obama and vice presidential candidate paul ryan who is from wisconsin expressed their sympathy and said their thoughts are with the victims' families. >> police have not identified the victims and did not say whether haughton's wife was one of those killed. overseas now. authorities say in jordan they foiled an al qaeda linked plot to attack shopping mall, foreigners and western domestic missions. 11 suspects are under arrest. all are jordanian nationals with ties to an ultraorthodox brand of islam. there's more violence overnight in lebanon. six people were wounded. trouble started in friday when lebanon's security team an opponent of syrian government was killed by a car bomb. his supporters blame the syrian and lebanese government which say is too close to the damascus regime. fidel castro says he's alive and well despite reports to the contrary.

castro now 86 years old published photos of himself in which he's seen reading friday's newspaper. he wrote an article in the state-run newspaper disputing rumors he was on his death bed. there has been speculation for more than a week that he was gravely ill. funeral services will be held friday for former south dakota senator george mcgovern. he was 90 years old when he died sunday. he was and unabashed liberal and a war hero but he will always be remembered for his landslide loss in 1972 to presidential candidate richard nixon. bob orr reports. >> reporter: three-time democratic presidential candidate george mcgovern won his party's nomination in 1972. >> i accept your nomination with a full and grateful heart. >> reporter: gary hart who went on to run for president twice himself was mcgovern's campaign manager and a young future president bill clinton ran the operations in texas.

mcgovern an unabashed liberal called for an immediate end to the vietnam war but lost to president nixon after winning one state, massachusetts. >> we're not trying to shed any tears tonight about the great joy that this campaign has brought to us. >> reporter: one of the great ironies of that race, president nixon ordered the break in of democratic headquarters in the watergate hotel because he feared being bested by whoever his democratic opponent might be. that break in led to nixon's resignation just two years after overwhelming mcgovern in the election. before entering politics, mcgovern flew 32 combat missions as a b-24 bomber during world war 2 and was awarded the distinguished flying cross.

match on sunday someone in the stands threw a bomb on to the field while medics were helping an injured player. the blast sent everybody scrambling. no one was injured. not known if the culprit was caught. a football fan is in critical condition after falling more than 20 feet. police say he tumbled over the side of an escalator. he suffered severe head injuries. it happened in the game between the new york giants and washington redskins. >> decision day for lance armstrong. he finds out if cycling governing body will repeal his lifetime ban and erase his seven tour de france titles. lance armstrong stepped down as head of his charity last week. he spoke at a fundraiser in texas on sunday. >> obviously it's been an interesting and as i said the other night at times very difficult few weeks.

recovery after the yen the fell to a two month low against the dollar helping exporters. tokyo's nikkei rose a fraction. hong kong's hang seng added a half of a percent. wall street hopes to rebound after a sour end to the week. blue chips tumbled on friday. the dow lost 205 points the biggest loss in four months. the nasdaq was down 67. the price at pump continue to go down. the national average cost for a gallon of regular is $3.68. that's 11 cents less then a week ago and 15 cents less than a month ago. you're still paying more than you did last year. gas prices at this time in 2011 was 22 cents less per gallon. nissan is recalling nearly 14,000 vehicles because some of the bolts could become loose and fall out. the recall affects certain

floodwaters roar through a town in france famous for its catholic shrine. rescue teams helped hundreds of pilgrims evacuate. rains inundated hotels and closed roads. french meteorologists say this is the worst flooding in 25 years and they warn the stormy weather will continue through the week. it was a boxing come back that could have been scripted by hollywood. over the weekend danny jacobs got back in the ring after surviving a devastating bout with cancer. the super middleweight boxer proved he still had a lot of fight in him. >> danny jacobs, fortunate enough to be alive. >> reporter: danny jacobs wasn't supposed to be here in a

brooklyn boxing ring. he was supposed to be dead. but neither cancer nor partial paralysis could keep this fighter from the completion of his appointed rounds in 73 seconds in the first round of his first fight in a year and a half, danny jacobs punched his way into the next chapter of his remarkable young life. >> to take control of your destiny is priceless. i did that tonight. they told me i wouldn't box or walk proper. that's what i did. >> reporter: jacobs started to fight in high school. he learned fast and advanced quickly. he lost only two fights. 19 by knock outs losing by one. a middleweight title seemed to jab or two away. in the spring of 2011 he felt numbness in his legs. doctors said it was a pinched nerve. further tests revealed a tumor wrapped around his spinal cord. cancerous. paralyzing. doctors told him he would never box again if he survived. >> here i am a 24-year-old man at the time. world class athlete. you couldn't tell me i wasn't healthy. but for me to have this in my body how i could not know? how could this happen to me? >> reporter: after successful surgery jacobs began
