bridges this morning. what direction, will it slow you do? we'll let you know. a full traffic coming up in minutes. demonstrators have returned to the site of last year's "occupy oakland" protest. 200 people marched through downtown. protestors occasionally blocked traffic but the night was largely peaceful. this came one year after police tore down the tent city at frank ogawa plaza. >> it was a homeless shelter and we were feeding each other. all these people are friends and we came together to help the community and the world. >> last night police followed the marchers and gave warnings through a loudspeaker. some 200 officers were there some in riot gear following the protestors at a distance. only two arrests have been reported. the chp plans to patrol the streets of oakland soon to help the stretched police departmentful officers will be deployed next week to boost patrol in high crime areas and

help with traffic enforcement. a similar situation is planned for stockton. a body found last weekend was a missing girl from richmond the the death of 16- year-old kathy chu is now under investigation. she had been missing since late last month. a classmate contacted authorities after the body was found and they confirmed the identity of the victim. police made an arrest in the disof a castro valley woman. she was found inside a burning house october 18. authorities say she had been beaten by someone who may have gotten in through an unlocked door or window. the fire was suspicious. the alameda county will hold a news conference to identify the person in custody. more on that coming up. former u.s. senator george mitchell offered to withdraw as mediator on negotiations on how much the state should fine pg&e for the deadly pipeline disaster in san bruno. consumer advocates and public officials denounced the public utilities commission for its decision to hire mitchell and

its law firm. they say the firm has a conflict of interest because it represents an insurance carrier for pg&e. the oakland zoo is getting into the spirit this weekend with beau at the zoo. lawrence karnow is at the zoo for boo at the zoo. >> reporter: it's a good weekend to bring the kids to the zoo. it's going to be fun. they have all the animals at the oakland zoo but they are going to set up special things. if you come in costume you get a free ticket for some of the rides. i have been here with my daughter many times. it's a great time to come out to oakland. the weather will be fantastic. today starting out a little chilly. we have mostly clear skies outside but temperatures are dropping off into the 40s and 50s so a chilly start to the day. but through the day behind will build in. we are looking good toward the afternoon.

plenty of sunshine and some very nice temperatures up into the 60s coastside. you will see some 70s in the valleys. but this weekend, some of those temperatures likely to be soaring up into the 80s at least in some of the valleys but if you want to come out to oakland looks like a great weekend to do it. it should be dry all weekend long. some beautiful weather here. boo at the zoo. more on that and special guests creepy crawly animals. more coming up. >> thank you. let's take you outside. here's a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. so far, so good on this friday morning. quiet commute so far into san francisco. no big accidents. you will find some roadwork just in your usual spots. actually at this time across the san mateo bridge looks like eastbound of 92 from foster city boulevard all the way towards the toll plaza, it's early no delays westbound or eastbound 92 across the span. live drive time sensors, you can see where it is sluggish is

in the eastbound lanes of the dumbarton bridge. it's actually roadwork this morning on the san mateo bridge and the dumbarton bridge both in the eastbound direction. so just a heads up. caltrans crews will be out there until 5:00 this morning. and so not too much blockage. elsewhere the nimitz live 880 through oakland so far, so good to the downtown oakland exits and continues to move well southbound 880 towards oakland airport and hayward. coming up, we'll check mass transit. back to you guys. >> thank you. the east coast is bracing for what some forecasters are calling a franken storm. a combination of arctic air, winter storm and hurricane sandy. the hurricane is blamed for more than 20 deaths in cuba, haiti and jamaica and it's already having an effect on south florida. effects of the storm will be felt from coastal carolina up to maine and as far inland as ohio. even in coastal maryland, folks

are scrambling right now to get their boats to safety. >> better to be safe than sorry. we prefer to have it on land and not take chances with the weather. >> much of the united states, the u.s. east coast, rather, will likely experience gale- force winds, heavy rain, flooding and perhaps even snow between sunday and wednesday. on to the presidential race now, republican challenger mitt romney will campaign today in the swing state of iowa while president obama has media interviews at the white house. yesterday the president ended a 40 hour tour of battleground states including a stop in his hometown of chicago where he cast his ballot for the upcoming election. he is hoping to boost voter turnout by emphasizing that early voting is a simple efficient process. governor romney spent yesterday in ohio a state rich in electoral votes. polls show he trails the president in the buckeye state but is within striking range. >> on november 6 i'm counting on ohio to vote for big change. >> no republican has ever won

the white house without winning ohio. both candidates are staging aggressive campaigns there. the giants are heading off to detroit big winners last night. cbs 5 reporter anne makovec is over at at&t park where the giants won a pitcher's duel in game 2. it took a while to score but they finally did. >> reporter: that's right. it is the morning after another very exciting night here at at&t park. two down, two to go. things are going so well for the giants right now they may just sweep this thing in detroit. here's a look at one of the biggest plays of the night last night. prince fielder on first delmon young hits one by a diving panda at third. the ball then bounces off the wall and third base coach gene lamont decides to send fielder to the plate. but the relay from marco scutaro, fielder is out. the game stays scoreless until

the 7th with the bases loaded until brandon crawford grounds into a double play hunter pence scoring to give the giants i 1- 0 lead. they added another run in the 8th and win 2-0 to take the series lead. bumgarner strikes out 8 without allowing a run. the giants now headed to detroit feeling solid. >> did feel different for you out there last night compared to the last two? >> yeah. i went into the 7th inning instead of getting taken out in the 3rd. [ laughter ] >> were you surprised they sent prince on the second? what was your view? >> it hit off the wall. i thought he would score to be honest the way he caromed off the wall. it took a perfect relay to get it done. >> reporter: the giants and a lot of fans stayed long into the night savoring that win. fans were packing bars and sidewalks. it really wants a giants celebration. game 3 is going to be played on saturday night in detroit. at this point, the tigers

cannot win the series at home. so we'll see if the world series ends up back here at at&t park next week. right now live in san francisco, anne makovec, cbs 5. >> thank you. a number of special guests at last night's game but one in particular surprised a lot of giants fans. bryan stow attended the game as a guest of the time. the santa cruz paramedics you may recall was beaten up outside dodger stadium on opening day of last season. he suffered a serious brain injury but is making progress. some drama for the fan who ended with up pablo sandoval's third home run ball wednesday night. don price says in the scrum to get the ball, she fell over the fence in the bleacher section. dawn ended up in a walkway with the ball. she hid it in her pants and tried to get back to her seat but she couldn't because security stopped her. >> i reached down and picked up the ball, you know, and i go, the crowd is going crazy. >> all the balls hit into that area are recovered by the giants staff. and that's who has the ball

official opens today in fact, squaw valley openee run yesterday... just for ay skiing before halloween, resorts in tahoe don't think that's scary. boreal opens today. squaw valley opened one run for one day as a fundraiser. squaw officially opens for the season on november 21 along with kirkwood and mount rose. >> it's just unbelievable. it's october! >> that's great. the sierra resorts got more than 3 feet of snow. that's the most in october in five years. >> i'm getting phone calls from the east coast. you guys already have snow out there. can't believe it. >> i love skiing. the oakland zoo is getting into the halloween spirit this weekend. >> yeah. and lawrence is getting into the spirit. you're out there with some furry friends maybe? >> not quite furry but maybe hungry friends right now. we are by the alligator exhibit here and i don't know if you can see it, but if you look closely just behind the glass window here we have an alligator that's just sitting there just enjoying himself, sleeping like most normal creatures do at this time of the day.

but if you are up early and enjoying the show, hey, folks, we have some great stuff coming up. we have some live animals we'll look at maybe creepy crawlers too. if you want to get out to the zoo this weekend a very special event. it's boo at the zoo. it's a great time to bring the kids out of the they have costumes. you wear a costume to the zoo and you get in free to some of the shows. they will have treats for the animals at the zoo and learn about conservation all kinds of fun things to do at the zoo this weekend and the weather should be great if you want to get out here. this is going to be one of those perfect weekends to do it. the temperature will be warming up nicely. in fact it's starting out a little chilly around the bay area this morning. the temperatures are running in the 40s and 50s as we head throughout the day though we are going to enjoy plenty of sunshine all day long. no threat of any rainfall and those temperatures beginning to warm up. in fact, a lot of 60s and some

70s by the afternoon. the latest, the stormy weather moved eastward and that's where it's going to stay. we are going to be nice and dry throughout the weekend as high pressure builds in overhead so the temperatures will start to warm up very nicely outside. let's plan on a lot of those numbers in many of the valleys to warm up very nicely. around the state we're looking good. you will see high pressure dominating our weather great time to travel to tahoe if you want to enjoy some of the new snow. in the meantime, temperatures warming up a lot of 60s around the bay some 70s in the valleys. i think in the east bay you will see warmer temperatures moving well into the 70s. and then really this warming trend will likely continue right into the weekend and maybe the first part of the next week. as you get inside the bay those temperatures a little bit cooler but not bad. mostly sunny skies all day long. then gorgeous weather towards the weekend. high pressure will build in overhead like will go going to see some of those temperatures moving up into the low 80s in

the warmest spots in the interior valleys but here's one spooky thing coming our way. there's a chance that we could see some showers, wouldn't you know it, for halloween. i hope that doesn't happen. but that could very well happen. but you don't want to worry about that, come to boo at the zoo and have the kids come out with a costume and it should be a great time. we'll see if we can wake up some of these guys. back to you. >> i know, that alligator has the right idea. that's where we should be this morning. all right. thanks. let's go out live to the dublin interchange. this is what it looks like, quiet commute. i notice these mornings after these big giants wins it takes a while for things to get going. so traffic is lighter than typical. so far, so good only about a 1 or 15-minute drive time coming through the altamont pass. to the next map all green so far in our sensors. maybe a little bit of slowing in the eastbound lanes through livermore not much. it looks good all the way towards the dublin interchange. elsewhere a live look at the nimitz.

no major roadwork things quiet from downtown oakland past the oakland coliseum. and it continues that way into hayward so yeah, that stretch of the nimitz is pretty quiet this morning. across some of our bridges we still have this overnight roadwork in effect including across the dumbarton bridge. we see a few brake lights in the eastbound lanes of 84 where caltrans crews are blocking lanes. also some roadwork on the eastbound lanes of 92 as you cross the san mateo bridge from foster city boulevard towards the toll plaza. if you are a silicon valley commuter, this is a live look at 880/237. looks great on westbound 237 leaving milpitas heading towards san jose. traffic pretty much moving at the limit almost everywhere you go. and mass transit is off to a very nice start systemwide no delay for bart, ace, muni, caltrain and ferries. they are all right on time. that's a check of your traffic and weather together every 10 minutes. back to you guys. >> thank you. 4:47 now. a horrific murder on the upper west side of manhattan in new

york city. police say a nanny killed a 2- year-old boy and 6-year-old daughter that were in her care before stabbing herself. the 50-year-old nanny is now in critical condition. the children's mother discovered the carnage in her bathroom after coming home with her third child. more names of the johns will be made public today in a prostitution case in maine. police say a zumba dance instructor used her studio as a front for prosecution. the instructor and her business partner pleaded not guilty. 21 names of alleged customers were released two weeks ago. a 6-year-old boy is safe and back with his mother after he disappeared from his hayward school. crystal says her son who is autistic was takenning an after- school program yesterday and when she arrived to pick him inat the elementary school he want there. >> the police was not called until they realized they saw the look on my face that he was missing and not on campus. >> several police officers and

many volunteers frantically searched the area but a half rush hour later she got a call from a chuck e. cheese restaurant more than a mile away. the manager spotted the number on the boy's medical id bracelet. the school district officials are investigating how the boy got away. more money is pouring into the fight over a proposed soda tax in richmond. the campaign against measure n has spent nearly $2.5 million so far. the american beverage association is behind that effort. those supporting the tax plan have spent $42,000. state officials now say that two dozen sites on treasure island are safe. officials surveyed youth centers, ballfields and residential backyards in response to fears about the area's nuclear past. health department technicians found small levels of radiation that pose no health threats. cooler weather can mean the housing market cooling off along with it but not in the bay area. as the days get shorter so are

the number of days a house is on the market. every bay area county except solano showed shorter stays on the market. alameda county saw the number drop by 48%. san mateo it was 55%. 18% here in san francisco. apple profits rose 24% in the 4th quarter but that fell short of expectations. the cupertino-based company also indicated that strong demand and limited supply of iphone and ipad products will continue through the end of the year. despite hefty sales apple says products are expensive to make and that cuts into profits. apple stocks closed 1% lower yesterday. and amazon.com reported a 3rd quarter loss of $274 million as it continued to spend more money on expansion. amazon said results were way down by a stake in the online deal service living social. the kindle fire hd tablet is still amazon's best selling product but the company is not
