seen before. >> a monster storm system bearing down on the east coast. a live report on where people expect flooding and power outages. it's 7:00. saturday morning, october 27th. thanks for joining us today. former san francisco neighbors of two young children killed in new york are in mourning today. police say the six-year-old girl and her two-year-old brother were murdered by their nanny, marina krim found her children stabbed to death yesterday in the family's apartment. police say their nanny, 50-year- old joslin ortega had slit her own neck. the mother had taken the middle child to swim lessons. former neighbors say they're devastated. >> not even the baby-sitter. it's your nanny, someone that you have a relationship with. it's very scary. >> police say they have no motive for the killings. they're looking into w4r the nanny had gotten psychiatric help. she is in a medically induced

coma. today police have around the bay area will take part in an emergency response training exercise, it's called urban shield, involving multiple drills by 32 different law enforcement agencies. officer will rappel down the side of a 12 story building, and also practice a scenario in which they'd have to rescue a dignitary. starting in a week and a half, c.h.p. officers will help boost patrols in high crime areas of:00 land, as part of what's called operation impact. they're still working out the details like who will pay for the extra patrols. similar deployment is planned for stockton. new this morning, people living on treasure island are still without water service. a water main broke at around 5:00 last night, causing this water disruption. the san fortunes co public utilities commission say they are working on the problem. now once water is flowing again, people are being told to boil it before drinking. yerba buena island wasn't affected. in today's campaign 2012 coverage, a wealthy republican

from palo alto has donated another $13 million to a business advocacy group. charles munger, jr. is giving money to the small business action community that is running a campaign in favor of proposition 32. that prop would curb union political dues, and is trying to defeat prop 30. governor brown's tax hike measure. this is on top of a mysterious $11 million donation from arizona last week. the governor is rallying to find out who is behind the money. political reporter grace lee shows us how he is taking his fight from the capitol to the courtroom. >> these shadowy figures, they say they're from arizona, but from all i know, they might be from hillsboro, or the grand kaman i can't think. i don't know where these people are from, because they're hiding. they're wearing masks. remember the people like to run around in hoods because they don't want people to see who the hell they are. well the state of california is going to court to unmask these people. >> strong words from governor

brown today at the n.a.a.c.p. convention. he later clarified that he didn't necessarily mean to refer to the ku klux klan. >> no. what it is when people do things, sometimes they don't want to be exposed for what they're doing. and this arizona organization says they're in business for transparency. and here they're not willing to come clean in the court of california. so i think they ought to unmask themselves, yes. >> reporter: the governor is campaigning nonstop for prop 30 which would raise sales tax a quarter cent and state income taxes on the rich and he is supportive of a new lawsuit to reveal the people behind that arizona group. it's now in the hands of the court. the fair political practices commission filed a lawsuit demanding an audit of the arizona donor group, americans for responsible leadership. it says in part, quote, respondent's conduct will cause

great and irreparable harm to the voters of california by potentially denying them vital information regarding the true source of large sums of money. in answer to that lawsuit, the arizona nonprofit says, quote, this motion is the result of intense political pressure to have the f.p.p.c. do something and keep the campaign issue alive. and with political ads from both sides clogging the airwaves, it's just a reminder that there is not much time left. >> what would that accomplish, if we were to find out their names prior to the election? >> i think there may be something funny going on here. people don't -- look. there's a lot of people who have given money. mr. munger has given money and put his name on it. other people put their name on it. why didn't these? there's some other angle here that we don't know about. >> reporter: grace lee, cbs 5. >> so there is a court hearing scheduled for tuesday, and there is a possibility we could find out who is really behind that $11 million before election day. tomorrow here on eyewitness

news this morning, we'll have a conversation with the governor and more on california's budget situation. that broadcast starts at 7:30. this morning, hurricane sandy moving closer to the east coast. it was upgraded back to a hurricane from a tropical storm about 90 minutes ago. the continuing threat is prompting an unusual move from a few airlines. jetblue u.s. a ways and spirit will offering waivers to customers who want to change their flights. that means you wouldn't have to pay a fee. the national weather service is warning of widespread impacts from that storm and susan mcginnis is live from the coast of delaware. good morning, susan. how is it out 24r? >> reporter: ann, good morning. well, 64 million people, that's 1 in 5 americans lie in the path of this storm. folks on the shore of delaware are among those folks. this area is one of the targets where the storm could make that left turn before joining thousand wintery weather systems and turn into a mega storm. from the carolinas.

>> we've brought everything in that the wind can move. >> reporter: to new england. the entire eastern seaboard is keeping an eye on the news for the latest on sandy. >> we watch it by the hour. >> reporter: sandy is a big storm, with winds greater than 58 miles an hour expected throughout much of the east coast. >> because the sheer size of this storm, it's been pushing an enormous amount of water along. >> reporter: and experts are warning folks to tacet seriously and start prepare -- take it seriously and start preparing. >> probably 40% of the population of the united states could be affected. >> reporter: some towns are taking extra precautions to fight the flooding. in virginia beach they've build six foot tall sand berms on the beach. >> storm surge risk is extreme. the risk of flooding may be some of the greatest flooding people have seen in their lifetimes. >> reporter: folks here in delaware and up and down the east coast are preparing for sandy to make landfall and for the storm surge that comes with it. the bigger fear is that further inland, sandy will combine with

a winter storm system and bring heavy rains, wind, and snow. >> calling it the mega storm that we may may have never seen before. >> we'll see trees and branches come down. >> reporter: nervous residents are hitting hardware stores, stocking up on generators and flashlights. >> they're run low in there. >> reporter: residents have been told to prepare for power outages that could last several days. >> and the storm is causing the cancellation of lots of halloween festivities. it's cutting short lots of vacations in rehoboth beach, delaware and impacting the presidential campaign and affecting early voting. three states, battle ground states lie in the path of this storm. >> now, we heard in your story that utilities are standing by in case there's any trouble, any outages. what are they doing to prepare so there might be fewer of those? >> reporter: well, the utilities up and down the mid atlantic, including here are asking for help nationwide. they are contacting other

utilities asking them to come and help out with 10s of millions of people expected to be without power. not just for a short time but this is expected to be a prolonged power outages, water outages and natural gas outages. >> susan mcginnis, thank you. >> and now let's turn to brian hackney. he has been keeping an eye on this system. they have been calling it the frankenstorm, because this convergence. what do you think? >> oh, it's the storm of the century for this year, anyway. as we look at the latest on sandy, it's spinning 335 miles east of charleston, south carolina. winding up off the shore of florida. air force reconnaissance flew into it and out of it and said there are hurricane force winds. it was downgraded overnight and then upgraded again to a hurricane. here is the projected path. it will take landfall sometime early tuesday, 70 mile an hour winds, and it's -- in its path, and we'll have the latest on all of that. but stay tuned. it looks like a pretty big

storm. well, the giants are in detroit right now getting ready for game 3 of the world series. the team's charter planes, two of them took off from s.f.o. yesterday. right now the giants lead the series 2 games to none. they are two wins away from a world championship. tonight, ryan vogelsong takes the mound for the giants against anibal sanchez of the tigers. kim coyle will have more coming up in sports in a few minutes. but next, hold the milk. we ever the connection between cream and the health benefits of tea. >> now cancer patients are preserving their fertility for free. i'm no new york, and i'll have that story coming up.

surprised. >> actually, we've been on notice for a long long time not to put milk and sugarer into your tea. >> next to water, tea is the most consumed beverage in the world. it can help boost your immune system, reduce cell damage and help your heart. some doctors recommend egg freezing for young women battling cancer because treatment can lead to infertility. a lot of insurance companies don't cover the cost. now we hear why that may change and how a program is helping cancer patients for free. >> reporter: when daniela found out she had breast cancer four months ago, if 27-year-old worried if treatment would affect her chances of becoming a mom. >> it was a real possibility that i could become infirst. >> reporter: freezing her eggs before chemotherapy would cost thousands of dollars, and as a young social worker, she couldn't afford the massive price tag. >> i had basically given up at that point. i was really crushed, and you know, it felt really unfair to me, because you know, the

diagnosis in and of itself was hard enough. >> reporter: for decades, egg freezing has been considered experimental, and insurance does not cover the cost. doctors hope that's about to change. this week, the american society for reproductive medicine announced that the experimental label should be lifted off egg freezing. >> this is something which is doable, and i think probably the real impediment is not the technology anymore. i think it's the actual unfortunate lack of insurance coverage for many people who want to get this done but can't get it done. >> reporter: fortunately, daniela finally did get it done, thanks to a program through the the share institute which freezes eggs at no cost to the cancer patients. >> we've helped somewhere between 70 to 80 women so far. >> reporter: she now has 22 eggs to use when she is ready to start a family. >> it's really peace of mind that i might be able to have my own children some day. >> reporter: she's halfway through her chemo treatment and hopes more cancer patients have

the same opportunity she did. cbs news, new york. 14 minutes after 7:00 now, it looks like it's going to be a pretty nice weekend around the bay area. we have a warm up going on, brian. >> it looks like it's going to be beautiful in the bay area. maybe not so beautiful in detroit. we shall see. the giants, nevertheless, they can bundle up, right? >> they will have to. i hope they can man up in these colder temperatures. >> i have no doubt. they're professionals. >> ok. >> first a look again at what's happening out there in the eastern seaboard. just to give you an idea where the path of this hurricane is headed. puts it on landfall near delaware sometime early tuesday morning. minimal hurricane. it was downgraded while you slept last night and then upgraded again. so it's a hurricane with winds up to about 74 miles an hour, and by early monday morning, it will still be a hurricane just before it touches land. it's the fact that it will be colliding with any of the warm moist air off of the atlantic, colliding with very cool air

which is just like a snow plow going through the atmosphere. it lifts up all of that moisture leyden air off the atlantic, and the result is going to be a lot of rain. in fact, they expect up to a foot of rain in the path of the storm. 6 to 12 inches, power outages with 40 to 70 mile an hour gusts. beach erosion around lunar high tide. it will be a problem out there. out here, not bad. temperatures in the upper 40s to low 50s. a lot of sun, some low clouds along the shore line. as for game 3, partly cloudy, and the temperature range will be from 43 to 50 degrees. so it will be on the chilly side, but it won't be over the top, but it is after all, detroit. weather headlines back in the bay area. sunny and mild, inland will reach a low of -- inland will reach low idea degrees by tomorrow. rain and wind will spread south in the bay area on wednesday, so sun and warm readings for the next 72 hours, we'll begin to get wed again about mid week. on the radar, high pressure is anchored over the pacific, and as a result, we've got nice

sunny conditions expected for the bay area today. we will have some patchy low clouds along the shore line that will move in again tonight, but for the rest of the time looks a-ok. out the door, partly cloudy skies, and temperatures today will be mostly in the 70s. extended forecast is calling for clouds to thicken up tuesday night. wednesday we'll get rain. that rain will linger right into thursday. but then by this time again next weekend, we will go with sunny skies and keep an eye on that. the eye of the storm, sandy, we'll do that all weekend here for you. >> thank you, we'll keep an eye on that storm that we have coming our way. >> mid week. >> that could be affecting the thursday morning commute. thanks, brian. well the giants as we have been talking about, may need to bundle up a little for game 3 of the world series. what's on tap for the game in detroit, coming up. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

the series. >> good morning, everyone. bruce bochy is leaning towards his switch hitting backup catcher hector sanchez as the designated hitter for game 3 of the world series. they'll need those sweatshirts in detroit, with temperatures expected in the 40s for first pitch, and it's only going to get colder as the night goes on. manager jim leland thinks a little home dugout advantage will help the tigers. >> they have all kind of stuff. we have heaters in the dugout for both teams, obviously. ours is going to be a little warmer than theirs i think tomorrow night but that's all right. we won't tell them that. you can't be worried about how cold it is. i threw a game in chicago last year, where it was 34 degrees and it was raining and sleeting. and i threw the emball pretty well that night. so i don't suspect the cold weather's going to be much of an issue. >> if i'm thinking about how cold it is, it means i'm not thinking about what donald rumsfelding on the mound. >> cold for everybody. cold for the fans, the beer's cold. enjoy it. >> the n.h.l.

east coast, some of the "families former neigh and here is a look at this morning's top stories. after two children are killed on the east coast. some of the family's former neighbors are mourning on the west coast. a six-year-old girl and her two- year-old brother were found dead yesterday in new york city. police say their nanny killed them. the family used to live in noie valley. today bay area police officers will rappel down a building and perform several other drills. they are taking part in what's called urban shield, practicing their response to a variety of emergency situations. >> and a giant storm barreling towards the east coast right now, hurricane sandy was upgraded again from a tropical storm to a hurricane about two hours ago. and that would will combine with two other storm systems and bring very heavy rain and snow. >> obviously a sports ticket in town was the world series last week. tomorrow on eyewitness news this morning, how san francisco hopes to raise its athletic

our schools shouldn't be 47th in anything. ,,,, proposition 38 bypasses sacramento, and makes education a real priority- with the funding, to our local schools and the accountability from our local schools... that we'll need to improve student learning in every classroom. so we can stay 47th... or we can choose proposition 38. i'm voting yes on 38... because it makes our children #1.
