bay area. the question is, why? >> uhm....... because they were holding a sale on the television. and -- >> everybody wants a tv. some retail chains are actually opening tonight even before everyone's turkey settles and, of course, kmart is opening in about an hour and a half from now. here's a look at some of the stores. sears, toys 'r us and walmart plan to open at 8 p.m. target will open up at 9:00. locally two malls will open at midnight thanksgiving night for the first time ever. they are the valley fair in san jose and santa clara, and stoneridge shopping center down in pleasanton. we have you covered on the best money saving tips for this black friday. you can check out cbssf.com/black friday. there is a holiday backlash from employees at walmart. [ chanting ] >> dozens of pro union protestors rallied at this

oakland walmart yesterday. similar rallies are planned for tonight and tomorrow. walmart is nonunion. these protestors say the company thrives bidenning their workers a living -- by denying their workers a living inning what. walmart has asked the national labor relations board to stop the rally but a decision probably won't come in time. a man accused in a deadly crime spree that included shooting a police officer now says he is sorry. jonathan wilbanks walked into court yesterday. police are still looking for his accomplice in last friday's rampage. officers say they are behind an armed robbery spree that left one man dead. a police officer was wounded in that shootout. wilbanks' attorney says his client is extremely remorseful. but that may not help his case. >> the murder of rory parkpettiford that potentially is a life without the possibility of parole or a death penalty charge. so there is not much more you can do to somebody after that. but the attempted murder of a police officer is a life

offense in itself. >> despite a $20,000 reward and an all-out manhunt, the second suspect is still on the run. well, oakland pd have another murder to solve. officers got the call to an east oakland address around 9:30 last night. they went to hilton street near seminary avenue where they found a male victim who had been shot at least once. he was pronounced dead at the scene. there are no suspects. a shooting shut down westbound lanes of 580 last night. two cars were found with bullets near seminary exit. there was no one in either car and police have not found anyone wounded in the gunfire. between the two cars, the freeway was completely closed for two hours as the police were investigating. after 8 days of deadly attacks in the middle east, a cease-fire is now in effect for israel and hamas in gaza. but as susan mcginnis reports, more work needs to be done if

the truce is going to last. reporter: shops are re- opening and clean-up is under way in gaza. the city suffered massive damage during a bloody eight- day rocket war between israel and hamas. under the cease-fire agreement, hamas promises to stop firing rockets. israel says it will end air strikes and will ease border restrictions that have stifled gaza's economy for years. israeli troops that had been poised for a possible ground war pulled back this morning. in tel aviv, most israelis were also happy to hear the news. >> i would like to believe that not fighting will always do more good than fighting. but i'm very happy to hear that. >> reporter: egypt's new islamist government was the driving force behind the negotiations to end the conflict with diplomatic help from secretary of state hillary clinton. clinton spent two days shuttling between jerusalem, the west bank and cairo. >> people of this region deserve the chance to live free

from fear and violence and today's agreement is a step in the right direction. >> reporter: clinton expects egypt to play a key role in maintaining peace. susan mcginnis, cbs news, washington. the woman of who has taken a lot of heat in the aftermath of the benghazi attack is now defending herself. yeah. for weeks, u.n. ambassador susan rice has been attacked by senator john mccain for participating in what he described as a cover-up. >> this president and this administration have either been guilty of colossal incompetence or engaged in a cover-up. >> mccain says rice made misleading comments in the days immediately following the benghazi attack in libya. rice is being considered for secretary of state. some republican senators have vowed to block her nomination. she spoke publicly about the controversy finally yesterday. >> when discussing the attacks

against our facilities in benghazi, i relied solely and squarely on the information provided to me by the intelligence community. i made clear that the information was preliminary and that our investigations would give us the definitive answers. everyone, particularly the intelligence community, has worked in good faith to provide the best assessment based on the information available. let me just end by saying, i knew chris stevens. i worked closely with him and had the privilege of doing so as we tried together as a government to free the libyan people from the tyranny of qaddafi. he was a valued colleague and his loss and that of his three colleagues is a massive tragedy for all of us who serve in the u.s. government and for all the american people. let me be very clear, i have great respect for senator mccain and his service to our country. i always have and i always will. i do think that some of the

[ laughter ] >> reporter: we have hundreds of cars here. folks, you know what? this is amazing. literally every kind of car you can think of the latest and the greatest all the new technology, all the new really slick fancy cars. we are going to be showing you those throughout the morning. so you're going to want to stick with us. in the meantime the weather, what a change from yesterday. of course, it was very wet yesterday early on. but now we started to clear out the skies. we have some patchy fog showing up in the valleys, some 30s and 40s around much of the bay area. 50s into san francisco. but i think overall, it looks

like we are going to see some pretty decent weather outside. i think we're expecting some fairly nice conditions throughout the day today. and it looks like pretty good day to get around the bay area. so as we head to the afternoon, we're expecting lots of sunshine. those temperatures into the 60s outside in many spots again. so some beautiful weather around the bay area toward the latter part of the day and it will stay dry and it looks like it is going to stay nice and dry for some tim to come. we'll have more on the car show in a few minutes. let's check the roads with gianna. >> not a lot of people are on the roads so if you are going to visit family for this thanksgiving you're in light traffic, very quiet. here's the bay bridge and you can see just a few cars crews there is towards the pay gates but overall an easy drive into san francisco. no delays as you work your way out of san francisco into oakland. we have a couple of minor fender-benders out there. earlier one near the golden gate bridge cleared up quickly. also eastbound highway 4 headed into antioch is over to the

thousands of people will start coming through the car show today. in fact, you're looking at people coming in starting at 10:00 this morning and this runs until 10:00 tonight and right through the weekend. so if you want to come out and go for a little walk before you worry about the turkey dinner you're going to have to inhale a little bit later on today, this is a good place to do it. not a bad place to also go for a walk in san francisco. plenty of places to park on a day like today and you have a great car show you can check out all this really neat technology. as we're expecting to see changes for the weather today, it's much cooler to start. no rain and we have a couple of patches of valley fog so watch out for that. we are going to see lots of weather in the afternoon. high pressure building in bringing many of those temperatures up well into the 60s. high pressure taking over it will continue to bring more sunshine not only today but for

the 680. to the san mateo bridge, also very light, not a lot of cars on the road. look at that. not a lot going on there so good news all around. back to you guys. thank you, gianna. 4:48 now. people in the oakland hills neighborhood are taking high- tech crime-fighting to the next level. there are the typical warning signs for criminals and security cameras visible on porches of homes but what's not visible is a coop organized in the neighborhood. the man who created neighborhood guard says thousands of others have expressed interest in joining. >> i think this is not going to solve all our problems. i do think this will make us more safe. >> the cameras have already helped. for example, they record images of a hit-and-run and a man prowling the neighborhood at 2 a.m. about the time that someone broke into nearby cars. the images and information are turned over to police.

a woman is engaged in a manhunt of sorts in the east bay. she is trying to find the mystery man who helped her when she crashed her car on highway 4. the scary accident. teresa's car flipped twice over a guardrail and right into oncoming traffic. she says that that's when a good samaritan rushed to her rescue. she remembers he was wearing military fatigues and knew what to do in an emergency. >> he turned to the front of me and talked to me and did a quick physical exam to make sure i could feel, make sure my hips weren't broken, made sure my spine was intact. and he just talked to me and kept me calm when i felt like i was going to pass out when i was hyper vent lating and really just not sure what was going on. >> he stayed with her until they put her in an ambulance, then he was gone. brill is hoping the police report will include the man's name so she can thank him. 4:50 now. hundreds of thousands of californians could see a jump in their medical insurance payments and there's not much they or state officials can really do about it.

cbs 5 reporter grace lee tells us about one couple who is already feeling the punch. >> there in the mail was an anthem envelope with information about the plan. >> reporter: inside it was bad news for jan a local pediatrician. her individual anthem blue cross insurance premium is about to go up nearly 25%. that's an extra $296 per month just for her. her husband's rates will also hike up about 24% meaning together they will pay an extra $528 a month starting in february on top of what they're already paying. >> a 25% increase, i felt like i had been kicked in the stomach. i could hardly eat. i couldn't sleep. >> reporter: we asked blue cross why the sudden change. the spokesman said a rate adjustment is necessary to cover increasing medical costs and ensure the viability of our individual business. >> i found myself at midnight

last night asking the question, why isn't the insurance commissioner protecting us? why aren't we getting help with this? >> reporter: the state insurance commission dave jones says he wants the power to stop unreasonable rate increases but right now, he does not have the authority over insurance companies. >> consumers who buy their policies in the individual market have seen double-digit rate increases year after year. >> reporter: commissioner jones says he has tried to get the veto power to prevent excessive rate increases. he has tried in the state legislature for six years and it has failed every time. it's one of the reasons why he has qualified a ballot initiative but that won't go to the voters until 2014. in the newsroom, grace lee, cbs 5. parachutes there. christmas in the park is a free event put on by a none of profit. the event suffered major budget cuts last year so replacing the penguins will be costly. >> i think it's horrible! and they shouldn't be allowed here. stealing it from kids, this is the spirit of the holidays. i can't believe somebody would do that. >> one of the penguins was found ditched behind a nearby building. replacements have been ordered. christmas in the park opens tomorrow at the plaza de cesar chavez. a community still recovering from superstorm sandy is helping neighbors in need. a school principal in new york came up with the idea to raise money to provide this feast to students and their families. they say they won't be eating turkey today, instead they will be cleaning up from the storm. so many of them they enjoyed their thanksgiving meal early. >> i'm very thankful right now. i'm just thankful that we have
