good evening, i'm ann notarangelo. today, friends and family said good-bye to a former football star who police say was murdered by two men on a crime spree in san jose last week. also today, we learned police have arrested the second person wanted in connection with that rampage. but we can tell you his name or show you his face, as cbs 5 reporter anne makovec reports the second suspect is just 15 years old. >> you would never want to see someone that young lose his life at a young age. by those means. >> reporter: 22-year-old rory

park-pettiford a former football player and aspiring hip hop artist was remembered as a memorial service in campbell. >> rory was a great kid. always jovial and happy. you know practical joker. >> reporter: but many friends couldn't speak of him without breaking down because they can't help but remember how he was killed. during a robbery attempt one week and one day ago. this is a surveillance photo of two robbers who police say tried to carjack park-pettiford in his car outside a store and shot him when he tried to drive away. that's after a violent crime spree that started with four armed robberies within an hour on friday, november 16th. this is how it ended for one suspect 26-year-old jonathan wilbanks. captured after running into a family's home later that night. the second and final suspect a teenager was caught last night after a week on the run. >> we're just happy that he's in custody now and again, the community can rest at ease knowing that he's behind bars. >> reporter: this is the sketch

police used to help track him down. they're not releasing his name because he's only 15. he had been hiding in a home in concord. >> i hope he gets tried as an adult. because what he did was an adult crime. >> reporter: in addition to murdering park-pettiford police say the man opened fire on an officer while he sat in this patrol car. the stick marks path of the bullets. and you can see on the officer's belt how a bullet punctured the pepper spray cannister causing it to explodes. the two are facing charges including murder, assault on a peace officer and robbery. wilbanks was arraigned last week. >> i'm glad the guy gets to rot for the rest of his life. so when he takes -- he didn't deserve it. >> reporter: from san jose, anne makovec, cbs 5. >> two san jose police officers were injured trying to break up a brawl at a house party last night. police responded to reports of shots fired in the 3,000 block of pat avenue shortly before 11:00. officers say when they arrived

people started throwing bottles at them and hit one of the officers. a man tried to drag the officer into the backyard but he managed to get away. >> officers continued to get bottles thrown and objects and second officer was injured trying to take suspects into custody. >> it took several hours and about 60 officers to break up the brawl. 42 people were arrested on charges ranging from assault with a deadly weapon to misdemeanors. the chp is now confirming a second sister has died in a crash with a patrol vehicle in palo alto. father was driving his wife and four daughters in their suv when he ran into the back of the cruiser which was pulled over on the right hand side of highway 101. two sisters who died were thrown from the suv. the family had just spent the night doing black friday shopping at the gilroy outlets. the items purchased were for one of the sister's wedding in india. well, it took a while but rescue teams were able to save a man who was trapped in a

drainage pipe. at about 9:00 last night, he got stuck inside a 16-inch shaft behind the best buy store on fitzgerald drive in pin knoll and he was really in there. about seven feet below the surface of a hillside. crews couldn't see him at first. >> we made verbal contact with the victim. and he was agitated. but said he wasn't injured but stuck completely horizontally. belly down, feet down. in the corrugated pipe that was angled at about 60% grade. >> crews had to excavate the drainpipes in order to get the man out. the whole operation took about three hours. and this is a photograph of the rescue effort. the victim said he had used the area called a catch basin to stay warm in the past. he also told authorities that he was homeless. paramedics treated him for abrasions, hypothermia and

dehydration and then took him to a hospital. well, black friday wasn't as black this year. not because less people are shopping, but because several big retailers opened on thanksgiving night. retail tech company found consumer spent $11.2 billion at stores across the u.s. yesterday. and that's down nearly 2% from last year. however, retail foot traffic increased 3.5%. and that indicates some shoppers did more browsing than shopping. that brings us to saturday. why your neighborhood small businesses probably need a lot more love than just one day a year. >> and if you suddenly feel like you had way too much to eat over the past couple of days, good news. you may be on one of the hottest new diet trends. yes, i just said diet. >> and it's shaping up to be just a lovely till holiday weekend across -- thanksgiving holiday weekend across the bay

small businesses. especially we got to champion small business, small businesses, small businesses. >> governor romney talks about small businesses, small businesses. >> we hear a lot of talk about small businesses. especially during presidential campaigns. and today president obama did his part by hitting an independent bookstore in virginia. the truth is though, small businesses need a lot more attention than just one day a year. but on this day, the mom and pop stores will get all the attention they can get. cbs 5 reporter don knapp has more on the big small saturday, don? >> reporter: yeah, you know in the big stores offer the spectacular discounts or allegedly spectacular discounts, small businesses feel like they're just outcompeted. they say they have to offer their customers something else. for them, it isn't all about the discount. between black friday, which the year got a head start with thanksgiving thursday sales and before cyber monday comes still another campaign to get customers into stores. small business saturday.

why? >> it means a lot because these days we get lost in the shuffle to some degree especially with the online presence and so on. >> reporter: generally small businesses can't compete with big discounts. peter says there are other good reasons to shop at a small business. >> the people will come into a small store usually operated by the owner or people very close to the business. we'll handle each customer as if it's our only customer. >> reporter: last year about 100 million shoppers turned out for small business saturday. shopper sonja says just being small makes it a better exfinal for her to shop. >> i went to sun valley mall. real crazy. super long lines and lots of stressed out people. and merchandise all over. so it's much nicer and relaxed today. >> reporter: mayor quan encourages oaklanders saying $100 spent in oakland leaves $68 in the community. while $100 at a national chain recirculates only about $43

locally. it may leave nothing in the community to buy online. he says the economy has been tough on small businesses. >> so anything we can do to help us out bring attention to our cause, if you will, is that much better. >> reporter: now, horrible small businesses do enjoy -- of course small businesses do enjoy the black friday overflow but a third of them say their biggest day of the year is small business saturday. reporting live in walnut creek, don knapp, cbs 5. still no word on what caused last night's gas explosion in massachusetts. the blast leveled two buildings including a strip club. more than 40 other buildings housing residential units were damaged and three of the buildings are now condemned. 18 people were injured and mostly emergency workers. authorities say no one was killed because the area had already been evacuated after reports of a gas leak. three maintenance workers were seriously hurt at a fire at the state department head quarters in washington, d.c.. it break out this morning in the duct work on the seventh

by the middle of this week, or this coming week. check out the holiday lights right now over downtown san francisco. so it's a gorgeous holiday weekend. all across the bay area. temperature-wise, but temperature have not been too bad and we have a similar story for tomorrow. so out the door right now grab a jacket definitely but you'll notice 58 in livermore. pretty seasonal. 57 degrees out in santa row sea. like i said it's not going to be a bad night. a few clouds and some fog roll in especially after midnight around the coast bay and inland. temperatures are mainly going to be in the 40s to very low 50s. and then by tomorrow, we're going to warm things up. we are going to see sunshine once again. and stay dry. we're going to see a lot of 60s around the coast bay, and in the inland spots plenty of sunshine and we're going get close to those low 70-degree readings. satellite and radar shows the story. we have a ridge of high pressure. it's staying over the bay area for the next several days. and we'll show you what's going on in futurecast. so sunday, monday, tuesday, stay dry and then by late

tuesday evening, that's when an area of low pressure moves in. we have some clouds rolling in and by wednesday morning talking rain and possibly a lot another it by the last -- of it by the last half of the workweek. lot of hos and a few low 50s -- 40s and a few low 50s across the bay. 68 in oakland and 67 concord and 68 degrees out in napa and mid 60s in the fairfield area. any traveling over the holiday weekend? sfo tomorrow partly cloudy. a high of about 63-degrees. and a lot of airports around the country are going to be dry as well. even going to be warm in houston reaching high of 79 degrees. the forecast around northern california. going to see some fog in fresno and sacramento. otherwise sunshine in monterey. closer to home here's a look at the forecast. over the next several days, sunday, monday, tuesday, stay dry. there's a look at that rain coming in on wednesday. and it looks like it's going to stay wet. thursday could be a dry day and friday and saturday and even more significant storm system is expected to hit the bay

against the beavers. the ducks win 48-24. if ump a little chippy in columbus for 19th ranked michigan and the ohio state university. buckeyes up three just before the half until robinson hits the hole. two buckeye defenders bounce off him and robinson's gone. a 67-yard touchdown. the wolverines take a lead but ohio state would regain the lead and seal their perfect season when c. j. barnett picked him off. the buckeyes win 26-21 finishing the year 12-0 but remember ohio state is on probation and therefore not bowl-eligible. they still have an outside shot to finish number one in the a. p. rankings. still craving thanksgiving leftovers? we've got you covered with the top five turkeys of 2012. featherweight boxer adrian broner ran his record to 24-0 on a fifth round tko this summer. the win sparked a little romance or so it seemed.
