and will be running round robbins in hopes of clearing everything so it's safe to travel through there. elizabeth? >> thank you. weather-wise, it's here. it's cold outside and we have several freeze warnings in effect. we have a freeze warning for the north bay, temperatures there well below freezing and then we have frost advisories in the east and south bay valleys along the bay. temperatures in the 20s to mid- 30s and temperatures dropping in parts of the east bay. out the door 20s in santa rosa and napa. fairfield 27. but even concord, livermore, below freezing there. it's a little warmer in oakland. 43 degrees, and 42 in san francisco. so by this afternoon, we are going to warm things up a little bit but again those freeze and frost advisories set to wrap up by about 8:00 this morning. in the meantime, we got this high pressure system sitting here across the bay area. it's going to bring us sunshine

and then rain returns tomorrow evening. so coming up, we'll get a check of your seven-day forecast. in the meantime it's going to be all about these cold temperatures today. kate is live in san anselmo. >> reporter: is it cold out there? >> yes. i can see my breath. you can see these cars have frost all over them. we are about a week away from the official start to winter but the weather is kick- starting things early. according to the national weather service, there is a cold front moving through the bay area. some of last night's overnight temperatures were the coldest we have had since january. temperatures in the north bay are expected to reach the freezing point or below and last night, people were bundled up in the east bay where it reached 39 degrees in pleasanton. >> we have layers on most of the kids i think three layers

on both of them. we're good to . >> reporter: soon you will need a rain jacket. the rain is coming back. that makes state water managers happy. since july 132 more rain than normal has fallen than normal in san francisco. oakland has more than 9" of rain since summer, 7" more than last year. take a look at the frost here back here in san anselmo. temperatures freezing temperatures will last until 8 a.m. so be prepared. grab that extra hat, jacket, layers. or in my case gloves. i kind of failed on that part because i only brought one glove. not great. reporting live in san anselmo, cate caugiran, cbs 5. it was a tense evening at san jose city college. s.w.a.t. teams swarmed the campus yesterday after a caller reported seeing a gunman. heavily armed police officers searched the campus room by room during a three-hour lockdown. the 911 call came in around 4:30 yesterday afternoon.

the caller reported seeing a black male possibly armed with a gun at the tech center building. students and faculty were released from classrooms as officers searched the five- story building. for many on campus it was disturbing. >> we definitely barricaded down. we definitely sat there. we hushed our voices, got away from the windows, made sure we weren't near where anybody could look in. and we were worried. we were afraid. >> in the end, police were unable to find any indication that a gunman was on campus but officers say in the wake of the connecticut shooting, they were not taking any chances. as more funerals are eld had for victims of the shooting in connecticut more details are emerging about adam lanza. workers at a newtown hair salon where lanza and his mother were customers said they never heard him speak. they say his mother nancy lanza would give her son directions about what to do and where to go. meanwhile, investigators still not clear about what motivated adam lanza to open fire at that

elementary school last friday. cbs news' marlie hall has more from newtown. >> reporter: hundreds gathered for memorial service to remember sandy hook elementary principal dawn hochsprung. she died trying to stop the shooter after he broke into the school. >> you don't have to know her. you just have to know what she did is an act of selflessness. >> reporter: hochsprung's funeral is one of five today. tuesday saw two more children laid to remember, 6-year-old james mattioli loved sports and math. his family called him a numbers guy. and jessica rekos loved horses. she wanted a cowgirl hat for christmas. yesterday was a day of mixed emotions for many parents and students as school reopened in newtown for everyone except the kids who attend sandy hook. >> it was surreal. >> reporter: some stayed away. >> my neighbor up the street,

she, uhm.... -- her kid didn't come back. >> reporter: but there were also smiles from children who appeared to be happy to be going back tole school. the tragedy has reopened a debate on what kind of guns should be allowed in society with many now taking a new look at the issue. there is a groundswell of support in washington, d.c. to look at new laws that would ban magazines that hold dozens of bullets at a time even from pro gun legislators. >> i go hunting. i never put more than three shells in my clip. it holds five. >> reporter: marlie hall, cbs 5. >> the nra will hold a news conference on friday and the white house says president obama will actively support a bill to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004. people in the bay area continue to pay tribute to victims of the connecticut

shooting. yesterday evening, families and educators in the pleasanton unified school district held a candlelight vigil. photos of the 26 victims were displayed on a tree at amaral park. pleasanton school officials say it's a sad reminder of the importance of their jobs. >> always look at procedures and practices and what else we can do to improve. >> letters, pictures and donations from pleasanton will be sent to newtown later this week. the san jose sikh temple has a vigil planned for 6:30 tonight. they are on morillo avenue south of quimby road in the east foothills. california is no longer invested in assault rifles. it's pulled nearly $9 million of state pension money out of the gunmaker freedom group, which manufacturers the bushmaster. >> illegal to either have or sell that weapon in the state of california. so obviously the state

shouldn't be a participant in that kind of activity. >> california's teacher pension fund also has a stake in freedom group and it's now reviewing that investment. two bay area gun buy-backs last weekend were so successful, one city needs more money to pay for it. people turned in nearly 600 firearms in oakland and san francisco expecting $200 cash for each one. they gave out ious. >> i was ready to walk out and tell the crowd that's all we got. maybe another day. but the chief said, chief suhr said no, we have all these guns. we have to get them. >> they ended up giving out 157 notes promising money. $31,000 due in four days but the chief of police says he found the money and he is expected to announce who it's coming from later this morning. belmont police are looking

for a suspect in a bank robbery. surveillance cameras captured someone robbing banks on ralston avenue yesterday. the man between 25 and 35 years old approached a teller demanding cash. the employee complied the suspect left. witnesses saw a silver sedan speeding near the bank but officers haven't determined if the car belongs to the suspect. registered nurses plan to picket 21 kaiser permanente hospitals in northern california today. they are trying to draw attention to what they call inadequate staffing. kaiser officials deny that's the case. the picket lines are scheduled from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. today. and people in san jose will finally get fluoride in their drinking water. yesterday, the santa clara valley water district approved a plan to fund the project aimed at improving dental health. san jose's currently the largest city in the country without flouridated water. it will take two years to get it up and running.

out. more weather coming up throughout the show. we're talking traffic. here's gianna. >> a couple of things going on. first i want to show you our bay area bridges where this is a bright spot. at the toll plaza metering lights are off. it's dry so traffic should be fine. we are gearing up for the rain that elizabeth was talking about. on the golden gate bridge so far, so good. a couple of hot spots out of marin county due to construction but at the golden gate bridge no troubles. a trouble spot in the santa cruz mountains. completely shut down both directions, this is due to a tree that's down. may have taken down wires, as well. so highway 9 is completely shut down at glen arbor. as a result use alternate. s. no time when it will be reopened. give yourself some extra time. and again use an alternate if you can through there. southbound 101 as you head through san francisco, you might see some construction in and around that area. but no major lanes blocked

mostly affecting the on- and off-ramps. also full freeway closure this morning through antioch near somersville looks like they should wrap up within the next half hour to 45 minutes. alternates are in place. south bay no delays so far. westbound 237, 880 to 101, so far, so good. 880 itself through oakland not showing any trouble spots as so far, so good heading northbound through the maze and unfortunately i didn't have a chance to put text information there but wanted to let you know that i-5 in the northern parts of california completely shut down still due this massive 60 car pile-up. back to you guys. >> thank you. reaction is expected on capitol hill this morning on a just-released report on the deadly attack on the u.s. consulate in libya. the report says grossly inadequate security due to management failure is to blame. ambassador chris stevens of the bay area along with three other americans were killed in the

attack. the report says there was no protest before the ambush. it's all part of the unclassified portion of the findings. the rest of the information is only for those with high level clearance. >> it's going up to senate and house assigned reading rooms like we always do with classified information. >> the report did acknowledge the siege was unanticipated and found no cause for disciplinary action. on capitol hill, house speaker john boehner wants a house vote on his plan b. that's to prevent the country from going off the dreaded "fiscal cliff." it would raise taxes on everybody making more than a million dollars a year while cutting spending to benefit programs like medicare. democratic leaders have already rejected that particular idea. >> we do not have a balanced plan when the president's calling for $1.3 trillion in revenue and only willing to put $850 billion worth of cuts over 10 years. >> president obama had been

>> northbound 5 remains closed at this hour after a massive 60- car pile-up. the series of crashes started around 6:30 last night. the pile-up stretched for a mile along the northbound side of the freeway between yreka and the state border. this shows you how serious lit vehicles were damaged. at least 6 people suffered minor to moderate injuries and they were taken to area hospitals. black ice is blamed for the accident. >> it is cold enough for ice on the roads. it's bitterly cold by our standards. michelle isn't buying this being from denver but for, it's cold. >> i was talking to a friend from chicago. she says the same thing. you don't know cold, you don't know what winter is all about! it's definitely cold in the bay area. it's cold, a chill in the air. we have a freeze warning posted for the north bay and frost advisories for the east and
