ciation. biden is promising urgent action against gun violence in this country and even said the president could go around congress by issuing an executive order. susan mcginnis gets us starts in washington this morning. susan, good morning to you. >> good morning, terrell. he's asking the vermont's commission for policy recommendations by the end of january, but he's sure to run into opposition from gun owners groups who want no change, no tightening of gun law. customers at sharpshooters firing range outside of washington, d.c. say they're keeping a close eye on gun control talks taking place inside the beltway. >> i don't think restricting, you know, people's second amendment rights would be the solution here. >> cbs news has learned the white house is looking at several new laws including reinstating the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004. >> we are not going to get

caught up in the notion unless we can do everything, we're going to do nothing. it's critically important we act. >> today the vice president meets with representatives of gun owners groups including the national rifle association. >> i don't want any part of my freedom taken away, the freedom to own whatever firearm i choose, however many rounds i want to keep, it's my freedom. >> vice president biden says he believes new laws can make it through congress because the massacre in newtown, connecticut, changed the political landscape here in washington. >> it's touched the hearts of the american people so profoundly as we learned of the young children not only getting shot but riddled with bullets. >> still, skeptics like the folks aet sharp shooters say new laws won't prevent criminals from getting their hands on weapons.

>> they can pass laws but it's not going to matter. >> but the vice president says he and president obama are determined to act. a new gun control group led by gabrielle giffords, the former congresswoman who was injured in the former tucson arizona, shooting rampage is trying to raise money that would match what the nra raised in november. >> susan mcginnis in washington. thank you so much. a just released report finds possession of firearms is part of the reason why u.s. suffers far more violent deaths than any other wealthy nation. 6 per 100,000 residents. none of the other 16 countries included even came close to that. finland, for example, has about two violent deaths per 100,000 people. in washington the president's cabinet for a second term is taking shape. today mr. obama is expected to nominate his chief of staff jack lew to be the secretary of treasury. lieu was the director of the office of management and budget during the clinton

administration. back then he helped negotiate a balanced budget deal with congress. if confirmed lew will replace timothy geithner. and labor secretary hilda solis announced she is resigning. she's expected to return to california. she's running for board on the county board of supervisors. three are staying on. eric holder, kathleen sebelius and eric shinseki are staying on. this year's deadly flu outbreak is worsening nationwide. the flu is so bad in boston the city has declared a public health emergency. free vaccinations are now being offered. ines ferre has our report. >> reporter: the flu hasn't been this bad in boston for years, more than 700 cases have been confirmed so far and statewide 18 people have died. city health officials are preparing for it to get worse. >> in the last two weeks alone we've doubled our number.

so if we continue this rate to see new cases, we'll have an explosion of flu in the city of boston. so we really need to get ahead of this at this point in time. >> reporter: but it's not just massachusetts. cbs confirms the 48 states. nationwide the number of people going to the hospital with flu symptoms has doubled in the past month. >> we're seeing in our region patient volumes and acuity levels greater than the peak of the h1n1 flu epidemic we had about three years ago. >> reporter: while this flu season has been a moderate to severe one so far, it's still within what they consider to be a normal rangers but there are still months to go before it's over. this year's flu vaccine is considered to be a good match to this year's flu strains, but it is not 100% effective. christine christine cohen's entire family

got the vaccine, but her 8-year-old son got sick anyway. >> as a mom i was very disappointed that he got the flu because i had to fight him tooth and nail to get the flu shot. >> reporter: still those who get the vaccine and get stick suffer fewer complications. ines ferre for cbs news, new york. >> a pretrial hearing for an alleged theater shooter james holmes is over. a judge is due to rule by tomorrow if there's enough evidence to rule a trial. it's still not clear if prosecutors will seek the death penalty. yesterday prosecutors showed killing pictures holmes took of himself before the massacre. teresa garcia reports. >> reporter: prosecutors showed the judge photos james holmes took on his iphone some just hours before the theater massacre. in one self-portrait, he had orange hair, black contacts, and a wild grin. another showed holmes stick out his tongue. there were photos taken inside and outside the theater, including an exit door like the one police say holmes propped open on the night of the attack. there was also a picture of

guns, body armor, and a gas mask neatly laid out on holmes' bed. prosecutors say holmes' pictures helped to show who he is, how he planned, and what they called his extreme indifference. some of the family members inside the courtroom say he smiled when he saw the pictures. >> he was delighted to see himself on the screen. we were all sitting there trying to hold our emotions and he was very excited to see himself. >> he was smiling. he was having a hard time controlling himself. >> reporter: holmes' attorney presented no evidence. he said this preliminary hearing was not the place to quote, put on a show and present a partial defense. the judge will announce on friday whether there's enough evidence to bring holmes to trial. if the judge decides to arraign holmes, cameras will be allowed in court. that would be the first time the general public sees the suspect since july 23rd. teresa garcia cbs news

engines and propulsion systems. alison harmelin was at the scene. >> reporter: a new york city pier looked like a mobile triage unit after a ferry slammed into a dock. >> it completely rocked me. people were like human projectiles flying into the aisles. >> reporter: emergency crews rushed the injured onto stretchers. officials say more than 70 people were hurt. >> people were in pain people were bleeding from the head people were seriously injured. >> reporter: she was standing up to get off when it crashed. >> i was standing there talking to a gentleman and the next thing i knew, i opened my eyes and i was on the floor six or ten feet away from where i was standing. >> reporter: passengers say the force of the impact knocked dozens of people off their feet and down stairs. >> and there were people all over the place. it was pretty scary. >> reporter: the city's transportation commissioner says the high-speed catamaran ran into the dock at about 12 miles per hour. the ferry was carried more than 300 people from new jersey to

this pier in lower manhattan during the morning rush. investigators are now here to figure out what went wrong. new york police and fire departments are working with the coast guard and ntsb to get answers. >> our purpose for being here right now is to gather the perishable evidence the information that can go away with the passage of time. >> reporter: passengers and crew will be interviewed. police say the five crew members already passed breathalyzer tests. alison harmelin for cbs news in new york. also here in new york another crane collapsed. it came crashing down wednesday afternoon. seven were injured including three underneath the wreckage. the crane was working on the first floor of an apartment building. during superstorm sandy a crane collapsed atop a midtown high-rise building. tock owe's nikkei added half a percent. hong kong's hang seng also added half a percent. the dow was up 61 points while the nasdaq gained 14. the consume erp financial protection bureau is unveiling new rules aimed at protecting mortgage borrowers. the mortgage regulations will ban lenders from offering risky interest-only and no documentation loans and most loan payments will be capped at 43% of the borrower's annual income. the rules will go into effect next year. aig has decided against sugar the federal government. the insurance giant considered joining a suit filed by a former ceo. the suit claims the terms of aig's federally bunded bailout were too severe. aig received $182 billion in taxpayer money during the financial crisis. the company is in the midst of a pr campaign thanking america for its rescue. and we're getting to that -- we're getting close to that

dreaded time of year, tax season, and with the tax code nearly 4 million worth, preparing a return is time-consuming work in this country. a new report finds businesses and individuals will spend more than 6 billion hours on tax filings. nearly 60% of filers will pay someone to do their taxes and 30% will use tax software. one of the monopoly board game pieces will be told do not pass go, do not collect $200. has brie is holding a facebook contest for fans of the game to vote for a new token and to get rid of one of the old ones. the new choices include a diamond ring, guitar, and helicopter. all the old pieces are up for elimination. the new version of the game comes out later this year. terrell? >> erica ferrari here in new york. erica, thank you so much. coming up next we'll have your weather and in golf annika sorenstam couldn't avoid taking a slice not on the course but in the kitchen. we will show you her latest

the mountain areas could see heavy rain and thunderstorms will spread into the mississippi and ohio valleys tonight. up to 4 inches of rain are possible in some areas, and it will be dry in the northeast. in sports this morning big rejection by baseball writers. they're not sending anybody to cooperstown this year, especially players tainted by the steroids scandal. first time that's happened since 1996. on the ballot were barry bonds, roger clemens, and sammy sosa. they've all been linked to steroid use. all-star craig biggio got 68% but needed 75% to get in. biggio was never linked to the steroid scandal. in basketball the lakers come up short again. final minute, manu ginobili. hit the three to put the spurs up by circumstance. the lakers'arily clark answers back. kobe bryant goes for the tie and misses. earl clark hurls a prayer. spurs hand l.a. their fifth straight loss, 108-105.

the thunder took a buzz saw to the t'wolves. a bright spot for minnesota. luke ridnour made back-to-back steals but kevin durant was hot. he scored 26 against the injury-riddled timberwolves. oklahoma city city wins by 106-84. annika sorenstam one of the best female golfers of all time injured herself an then tweeted about it. the 42-year-old is the only woman in lpga history to shoot 59 in a round. on tuesday she was making chicken and accidentally cut her finger and then tweeted it. yeah it's pretty gross. she got five stitches. her husband said she's fine and even went skiing. you don't have to tweet about everybody, by the way. some things you can keep to yourself. okay. when we come back, doggy double take. this especially groomed dog caused a big scare when people

the library of congress just received 10,000 hours of sports interviews featuring some of the america's greatest sports heroes, but as bob yore report this morning their insights go well beyond statistics and championships. >> reporter: for home run king hank aaron, the topic was immigration. as one of baseball's first black superstars, aaron carried the hopes of other aspiring players. >> you know, because there was only a few of us and we knew that if we failed, it was going to fall upon the players that was coming behind us. >> reporter: legendary basketball coach john wooden felt pressure too. the wizard of westwood won ten championships with ucla yet he sought a more far-reaching goal for his teams. >> the main purpose would always be education. no matter how good they are, a small percentage are going to make it to the pros. and a small percentage of those

are going to make it as stars. >> reporter: those are two of the 10,000 interviews spanning 25 years just acquired by the library of congress. the tapes from the national radio program "sports byline usa" are being converted to digital files to be shared with the public. >> i believe the earliest is from 1988. >> reporter: gene jianna the collections courier, says it takes you inside the thoughts of the heroes like mickey mantle. mantle threatened to quit. he said, i'm taking you home. he said you can go back and work in the mines with me. he said, i thought i raised a man. you're nothing but a coward. >> when you read somebody's words, that's fine. but when you hear them speak and you hear mickey's oklahoma twang and his youthful exuberance when he's talking about the game i think it has more impact.
