land and it is going to take off this morning at 11:45. so that is still on schedule despite that announcement that came from the faa just a little earlier this morning. this is the 787's debut from mineta san jose airport and it is set to land in tokyo tomorrow morning. this is the first boeing 787 dreamliner aircraft tofully from the bay area. it's run by all nippon airways. the faa ordered a comprehensive review from critical systems in the 787 model after a fire and fuel leak this week. several flights had to be canceled. you're looking at video from boston' logan airport. the 787 dreamliner relies on electrical systems more than any other and uses rechargeable

spinouts. a man accused of killing a romantic rival is at the center of a manhunt. dante smith is said to have shot and killed the new boyfriend of his ex-girlfriend last month. according to police, smith ambushed the couple while they were driving. he was last seen driving a black nissan sentra with tinted dose. he is armed and dangerous. police are calling a central california teacher a hero after he risked his own life to stop an armed student on campus. a teenager opened fire yesterday in a classroom at a high school in taft in kern county about 100 miles north of los angeles. here's cbs reporter edward lawrence. reporter: police swarmed taft union high school following reports of shots fired inside a classroom. >> he is in shock. >> reporter: police say a 16- year-old student walked in carrying a shotgun and opened fire. >> after he walked in, he pumped the gun. it was a pump action rifle. he pumped it and lifted it

right away and shot. >> reporter: casey says she tried to help one of her classmates who was critically injured in the shooting. >> the guy that got shot, i was holding him and i had blood on my sweatshirt from it. >> reporter: the local sheriff says the suspect told them he planned the shooting the night before. >> our 16-year-old student suspect has felt like he has been bullied for some time by a couple of students. >> reporter: they say the gunman and the victim had a history. >> the student that is in critical condition we believe was the intended target -- one intended target of the suspect. >> reporter: authorities say things could have been much worse if it weren't for the heroic actions of the taft high school teacher. >> if you talk to students, they probably all thoroughly enjoy his class. >> reporter: ryan talked to the shooter and convinced him to put down his gun. >> he said he didn't want to shoot the teacher. ultimately he put down the gun. >> reporter: the teacher says

he is still in shock at what happened. edward lawrence for cbs news. this morning, vice president joe biden will talk to videogame producers about factors that could contribute to violent behavior. today's meeting comes a day after biden hosted the nra at the white house to talk about gun control. nra left that meeting staying will not allowing law-abiding gun owners to be blamed for the acts of criminals in women. a new gun buy-back program is set for tuesday in marin county. authorities will have a no questions asked policy for weapons that are surrendered there. the county will pay $200 for semi-automatic handguns or semi- automatic long guns. authorities selected the date to coincide with the birthday of dr. martin luther king, jr., who was fatally shot in 1968. the colorado movie theater shooting suspect faces arraignment today. a judge ruled there is enough evidence for james holmes to go on trial on all 166 counts against him but his lawyers

aren't ready to enter a plea yet for their client. homes is accused of killing -- holmes is accused of killing 12 and injuring 70 last summer. a southern california woman pled not guilty to poisoning her boyfriend's daughter with chili pout. -- chili powder. she was alleged to have forced the girl to eat the chili powder as punishment. she is held on a million dollars bail. a san francisco man accused of setting his girlfriend on fire pled not guilty. 22-year-old dexter oliver faces 11 felony charges included attempted murder and torture. according to prosecutors he got in a fight with his girlfriend over which laundromat to use. his bail was set at $10 million. a five-year-old indiana boy who went missing 19 years ago has now been found. the accused kidnappers, his own grandparents. richard landers, jr., has been living in minnesota. investigators say landers' paternal grandparents didn't

want the courts to award custody to his mother so they abducted him back in 1994. last september, investigators tracked landers down through his social security number. >> the young man living in the state of minnesota actually was using the social security number but what was really interesting is that doing further checking on his personal logs had the same date of birth as the missing boy. >> the grandparents were charged with a felony in 1999 but that was dropped after the case went cold. now the statute of limitations has expired and charges can't be filed. meanwhile landers is now 24 and married. some breaking news in the north bay we're following. there's a major crime scene in a in redskin neighborhood. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is gathering information right now at the scene and we'll have the latest coming up. 4:37. president obama will discuss the withdrawal of u.s. troops

from afghanistan with president hamid karzai today. karzai has made the rounds in washington this week including dinner with secretary of state hillary clinton. a news conference is set after the discussion on the future of the u.s. role in afghanistan. white house officials say the president will not announce any decisions on troop withdrawals after the war formall in 2014. governor brown released his budget yesterday complete with $851 million surplus. schools are the big winners. k-12 and community colleges will get an extra $3 billion. medical gets an extra $350 billion and a billion goes into the rainy day fund. brown says the key now is to hold the line on spending. >> what i think is compassionate, what is good for

but they are still keeping this freeze advisory or freeze warning and the frost advisory in effect until 8:00 because again if the winds die down in the next couple of hours, between that 6:00 and 7:00 hour as you get closer to sunrise, could see temperatures continue to dip. so we'll keep a close eye on it. in the meantime continue to protect your plants, pets and your pipes. we'll take a look at the seven- day forecast too coming up. in the meantime, let's talk traffic. gianna is following a problem spot in berkeley. >> reporter: we started out with this trouble spot reported just after 3:00 this morning. just as we started the newscast, though, they had opened all lanes and cleared. what you're looking at is video we shot a little while ago. it could be up to four different accidents were reported in this area kind of a trickle effect through there so they had a couple of lanes shut down for quite some time until they cleared this out of the road. the flares are still out there. lanes are open. chp is going to leave them out there until they dissipate. on the maps you can see traffic is in the green so as of right now, it's moving along in both directions and eastbound 80 at ashby is where that accident was.

a serial bike bandit redhanded. 57-year-old is a convicted felon on parole arrested for stealing dozens of bikes around bart stations in the east bay. several expensive bicycle and dozens of parts found at his home. the suspect was caught with the help of one of his victims. >> he had seen his stolen bicycle on craigslist. he gave bart police a call and said this is what's going to be happening. and bart police met him at the station and the rest is history. >> park police have set up a web page with all the stolen recovered bikes. a wild dust storm slammed into a small beach town in australia. a huge red cloud of dust swept across the coast of onslow. dry conditions on the ground and heavy wins were the perfect mix for the dust storm. a category 3 cyclone is forecast to hit the coast of western australia later today. but take a look at that dust

fairfield. some coworkers had to scrape frost off their windshields this morning. if the winds die down temperatures could dip into the upper 20s. so we'll keep an eye on it. in the meantime, freeze warnings for the inland valleys especially in the north bay and in the east bay as well as the santa clara valley including san jose. frost advisory around the bay. this afternoon, we are going to climb up again to the low 50s. that ridge of high pressure is beginning to build. we are not anticipating major rain. we have a big game so right around for the play-off game time 5:00. it looks like still any scattered showers are remaining off the coast. so again, a tight chance for a little sprinkle or two along the coast. but it's not enough to impact anything with the game. elsewhere, highs for today mainly in the upper 40s, very low 50s. again similar to yesterday.

a look at your forecast over the next several days, looks like that ridge of high pressure really begins to build on sunday all the way straight through the end of the week where we got a bunch of sun balls with crystal clear skies. here's gianna with your traffic. >> thank you, elizabeth. we are going live to the bay bridge toll plaza right now. we don't have any accidents here but we have roadwork this morning. on the upper deck of the bay bridge near the cantilever section a couple lanes shut down until 5:00. so the next 15 minutes that should be wrapped up. of course, earlier we had this trouble spot in berkeley. eastbound 80 near ashby. there was a looks like four separate accidents possibly up to six vehicles involved in the accident. the good news is, everything has now been cleared out of the road. we are seeing some okay speeds. there is some light yellow there on the sensors. they still have flares there in the roadways. chp is going to let them dissipate. all lanes are open. traffic should be moving pretty

well there. it's the noncommute side. westbound toward the bay bridge toll plaza no delays. traffic is "friday light." reports of an accident along 280 near highway 1. looks like that's not too much of a problem traffic free-flowing along the peninsula. that is your morning drive. back to you. a san jose man who was supposed to spend the rest of his life in jail is now a free man. 50-year-old martin stagi was one of the first to be sentenced under california's tough "three strikes" law. now he is among the first released after voters in november approved prop 36, which prohibits judges from imposing life sentences on repeat offenders who commit minor crimes. i wasn't a very good person when i was arrested for this case. and, you know, that's all been washed out of my the way if you want to consider it like that. >> he had been in prison for 15 years for possession of meth and marijuana. his previous strikes were

assaults. a 16-year-old reptile found guarding an east bay marijuana stash has died. deputies say the owner now faces animal cruelty charges. officers arrested him wednesday on marijuana possession charges. mr. teeth, the 5-foot-long dwarf caiman that looks like an alligator, arrived at the oakland zoo after this pot bust. he died overnight. deputies found the reptile in a cramped plexiglass tank. experts say he was barely surviving. >> their metabolism is slow enough and that they are durable enough that you can keep an animal in substandard conditions for many, many years. >> he was probably used to scare off potential marijuana thieves. a dozen killer whales trapped under the ice in canada are free. they had been bobbing around a truck-sized hole for air. locals have been planning a rescue operation with chainsaws

and drills. the ice shifted and the whales got out. in healthwatch changes are coming for sleeping pills. turns out they work a little bit too well. the fda is requiring makers of ambien and similar pills to lower dosages. the problem increased risk of injury due to morning drowsiness including car accidents. regulators wanted the recommended dosage in half for women. the flu is spreading fast and now the makers of flu vaccine and tamiflu for kids are running short of both. the flu is widespread in 45 states. so far california is not one of them. lots of people think they have the flu when really they have just a bad cold. that's a lot of overlap in symptoms. but dr. kim says it all comes down to timing. >> i'd say the best way to tell the two apart is that with the flu, symptoms hit you like a mack truck. suddenly out of the blue you might have a high fever over

original estimate of some $8 million. but chp says the bridge is a potential terrorist target so it needs a state-of-the-art security system. >> before we agree to spend that much money, which is so far above the original budget that was brought to us, we just really want to make sure the is are dotted and the ts are crossed. >> chp and the toll committee will make a decision on the cameras by the end of the month. the good news is, they do have the money for it and tollpayors will not have to front the bill. >> that is good news. we are getting a sneak at the new bay bridge light show. it's an art installation called the bay lights. the lights are on but they are not moving dancing or shimmering quite yet like they will eventually. in fact, workers are still stringing up those lights. last night was the first time any of the lights were turned on. i saw them this morning. the project's big unveiling will come in march. so far they are looking good. >> i didn't see a thing. >> i know. >> i got on that bridge and just went straight down. there is a big buzz over

cars at this year's consumer electronics show. toyota and audi unveiled their new driverless technology. a stanford university engineer team is pushing these types of cars to high speeds. an audi tt with a powerful engine and precise gps system without humans inside. the engineers have let it run wild reaching 130 miles an hour on utah's bonneville salt flats. >> so you studied how race car drivers would do this and taught the door do that. >> it's a big part of this project is understanding how the best drivers control the car. >> the engineers monitored the brain activity of the race car driver. the goal is to build his reflexes and instincts into the software that keeps shelley on the road. amazing. >> it is amazing the technology. it's 4:56 right now. we're continuing to follow developing news out of the north bay. coming up a live report with the latest on the murder in marin county. >> and parts of the bay area

i'll tell you where. good morning, everyone. it's friday january 11. i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. it is 5:00 now. we have an update right now on that breaking news in marin. right now sheriff's deputies are looking for a gunman who shot and killed a teenaged boy this morning. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is on coal drive where she just spoke with deputies. cate. >> reporter: good morning, frank and michelle. yes. they don't have a suspect description at this point. but yes, there is somebody they are going to be looking for. but i want to show you right now, there's still quite a bit of activity going on as investigators are still on the scene of this homicide investigation. here's what we know so far. around 12:16 this morning, deputies tell us they received multiple 911 calls at the 300 block of drake avenue. and then deputies arrived within minutes. they found a 17-year-old boy with multiple gunshot wounds. they say he was shot two or three times. that's when they attempted cpr. a short time later they pronounced him dead. right now wh
