ood morning, anne-marie. this could end up being quite a rumble here on capitol hill today. you have wayne lapierre head of the nra, gabby gifford's husband strong gun control advocate and then this 18-member panel, some of the strongest senators we've got, all talking about one of the most divisive issues we face. emotions could run high today when the husband of former congresswoman gabrielle giffords will join wayne lapierre to testify on gun control. pa trach lay hee called the hearing in response to the newton shooting where 20 children and six adults were killed. but lapierre says he doesn't believe the shooting should lead to new gun control laws. he plans to tell the committee law-abiding gun owners will not accept the blame of criminals.

we could see fire here on capitol hill when senator dianne feinstein gets her turn to question lapierre at today's hearing. feinstein has been an outspoken critic of the nra. tuesday she told reporters they have fought virtually every kind of regulation. the time has come to change course and the time has come to make people safe. lapierre says congress shouldn't pass any new laws until the government starts enforcing the laws already on the book. it's still unclear whether former congresswoman gabrielle giffords will attend but we understand from blumenthal that a surprise guest will appear. he's not identifying who that is. >> that should be interesting. susan mcginnis in washington, thanks. >> another high-profile issue for congress and the administration is immigration reform. president obama speaking in nevada yad said now's the time to fix the immigration system.

warned if congress doesn't act he will. danielle nottingham reports. >> reporter: president obama told students at the predominantly hispanic high school in las vegas he's keeping his campaign promise to reform immigration. >> we need congress to act on a comprehensive approach that finally deals with the 11 million undocumented immigrants who are in the country right now. >> reporter: the president supports the plan that the so-called gang of eight unveiled monday. it would allow illegal immigrants to gain temporary legal status if they passed a criminal background check, paid a fine and back taxes and learned english. they can apply to become a citizen behind people who started the process legally. >> for the first time in many years, republicans and democrats seem ready to tackle this problem together. >> reporter: some gop house members have already said they don't support the senate proposal, but some of the biggest opposition to immigration reform could come from outside the halls of congress.

republican senator marco rubio went on conservative radio to drum up support from a skeptical rush limbaugh. >> if 70% of the hispanic vote went republican do you think the democrats would be for any part of this legislation. >> reporter: bob dane's group is also opposed to the bill. >> it is clearly a trojan horse, which really reforms nothing. >> reporter: the group of eight senators sponsoring the legislation say once the language is agreed upon, the bill could come up for a vote as early as this summer. danielle nottingham, cbs news, washington. well, also on capitol hill, the senate overwhelmingly confirmed senator john kerry to be the next secretary of state. yesterday's vote was 94-3. kerry plans to resign from the senate on friday. earlier he was unanimously approved by the senate foreign relations committee which he chard for the past four years. so what's the future of the woman kerry replaces?

secretary of state hillary clinton said at a town hall meeting yesterday said yesterday, quote, she has absolutely no plans to run for president in 2016 but is looking forward to the next chapter. some are getting a leg up. they formed a super pac. it's called "ready for hillary." well, some severe weather including dangerous thunderstorms and the potential for tornados swept through the south and central u.s. overnight. torrential rain in chicago lasted through the night into the early morning. more is expected today as well. there were downed trees and power outages in arkansas and severe weather is expected in tennessee and mississippi. meteorologist david bernard of our miami station wfor is tracking this powerful weather front. >> the big story today is going to be the continued threat for heavy rain and severe weather from the southeast extending into the northeastern corner of the united states. now here's our map for this afternoon, and, again, this front is going to bring a severe weather potential anywhere from

the florida panhandle right through the atlanta area. that could mean some travel delays for the big airport there. if we follow the front to north, we're looking at flood watches for a good part of the northeast, strong to severe thunderstorms possible this evening and tonight as that front approaches the coastline. on the opposite side of that, we're looking at cold air spilling into the midwest. the rain we saw yesterday in chicago is going to end as a little bit of light snow with temperatures in the upper 30s. very cold in the plains with highs in the teens and 20s. out west it looks pretty quiet especially in southern california. not bad, l.a. 65. look for rain in the northwest. seattle and portland kind of dreary and temperatures in the 40s. i'm david bernard for cbs news, miami. overseas now, a police inspector says penny pinching may have caused that deadly nightclub fire in brazil. at least 234 people, mostly students, died in sunday morning's file. the inspector says the band used cheap outdoor flares for their

pyrotechnic display instead of the much more expensive indoor flares. it's estimated up to 1,300 were in the club at the time of the fire nearly double the capacity for a room that size. and the federal judge as approve add deal to allow bp to plead guilty to man slaughter charges in the 2010 gulf oil spill. the agreement ends the criminal investigation of the deepwater horizon disaster. bp pleaded guilty in the deaths of 11 oil rig workers and agreed to pay a record $4 billion in penalties, but the deal does not resolve the civil claims against bp. bp has already paid out $24 billion in expenses related to the oil spill. most of the victims' families have settled with bp in a separate process. now, coming up on the "morning news," a sinkhole that nearly swallowed an entire city forcing hundreds of people to evacuate. this is the "cbs morning news." to evacuate. this is the "cbs morning news."

that is not a building being torn down. it's actually collapsing into a giant sinkhole. this happened monday in south china. a second sinkhole later on in the day caused another three-story building to collapse. about 300 residents were evacuated and roads closed but no one was injured. on the "cbs moneywatch" now, battery issues for the dreamliner and blackberry unveils a new smartphone. ashley morrison is here in new york with more on that. good morning, ashley. >> and good morning to you, anne-marie. well, boeing apparently knew about the problems with the batteries on their dreamliners. nippon airways said it replaced ten lithium ion batterers months before it made an emergency landing and told boeing about it but not federal investigators. the ntsc said tuesday it's now conducting a microscopic investigation of the battery. stocks in asia rallied on promising growth data in china.

tokyo's nikkei gained 2% while hong kongs he hang seng added half a percent. housing prices host add biggest jump in six years. it added 72 points tuesday to close at 13,954. that's only 210 points away from its all-time high set in october of 2007. the nasdaq fell slightly. amazon.com posted its fourth quarter earnings yesterday. the holiday season helped them jump 22% but profits fell 5% short of analysts' expectations. however, investors didn't seem to care. in after-hours trading stocks went up more than 9%. and the blackberry is hoping for a big comeback today. research in motion will unveil the blackberry 10 this morning, their first new smartphone in a year and a half. the phone has a touchscreen and a new operating system and says if the blackberry does not sell well, it could be the end of the

an iraq veteran who lost all four limbs in an attack is speaking out about a remarkable surgery that gave him two new arms. bigad shaban has that story. >> reporter: brendan morocco wheeled himself into his own news conference. six weeks after his arms transplant he seemed comfortable with his new limbs. >> you know, i never really accepted the fact that i didn't have arms, so now that i have them again, it's almost like it never happened. it's like i went back four years, and i'm me again. >> reporter: four years ago more rockco lost his arms and both legs to a roadside bomb. a year later he told cbs news which loss was greater. >> without legs you can still be independent, you know. without arms there's so much more that you can't do. >> reporter: it took 16 doctors at johns hopkins hospital to13 hours to attach the arms of an anonymous donor who had died and

the artistic director of russia's bolshoi ballet is expected to retain some of his vision after his face was badly finally tonight, you might think a ballet as among the finest of fine arts. but who knew it could be so

violent? in russia, it's a bloodsport. from moscow, here is charlie d'agata. reporter: it's a tale of star-crossed lovers, murderous vengeance and betrayal. that's just on stage. behind the scenes, a real-life drama unfolded, of poisonous rivalries and cutthroat competition among russia's top dancers. last week, it spilled out into the open when a masked man threw a jar of acid in the face of sergei filin, the bolshoi's artistic director. suspicion immediately fell on dancers in the company. in this ballet-mad city, where people are as devoted as die- hard sports fans, the attack cut like a dagger. >> this is an outrage, this is corruption and this is criminal. >> reporter: anastasia volochkova was a prima ballerina with the bolshoi in 2003 before she was fired for being overweight. she told us about the jealousies among the dancers. >> cut the ribbons half, it

they are forecasting rain in the area and the wind is really starting to pick up. kind of feels like the bay area, lawrence. >> i have to tell you, you have an impressive cold front headed your way. get prepared, during the show we'll see heavy rain and lightning, aren't you lucky? so you can see the cold front sliding in across the big easy and well it looks like that rain is going to be picking up as we head throughout the morning hours. in fact, while michelle is out there she is going to have to take cover. look at the line of thunderstorms rolling in that direction. that will push onshore toward her in the next couple of hours so that wind is going to be picking up and the rain is going to be coming down. temperatures around the bay area in the 30s and the 40s in most spots. 50 in pacifica right now. looks like throughout the day high pressure is in control. going to flex its muscle, temperatures warming up. let's plan on 50s and mid-60s toward the afternoon. how long will this nice weather last? we'll talk about that coming up. right no
