inside a burned-out cob bin near big bear, california, but los angeles police say it's still too hot to go inside to confirm his death. the cabin went up in flames during the stand off with law enforcement. police swarmed the area and cornered dorner who had apparently been hiding out in the mountains. when they arrived the bullets started flying. cbs reporter carter evans was near the scene and recorded the gun battle on his cell phone. >> i hear some screaming. >> two deputies were shot in the exchange one of them died. officers were responding to a report of a man matching dorner's description driving a stolen vehicle in the mountains. >> he crashed the car and then took off into the forest. >> officers had focussed their search for dorner in big bear after they found his burned-out truck last week. the former lapd officer had been on the run since he allegedly shot and killed three people,

including a police officer. authorities plan to entered that burned-out cabin once it has cooled down and also is considered safe. los angeles police officials have been telling us there is a lot of live ammunition inside so those investigators need to proceed cautiously. live here near big bear, theresa garcia. now, back to you. >> now theresa we still don't have confirmation wouns again that dorner was inside that cabin so are police still patrolling the area with equal intensity in the chance the off chance that he could still be on the run. >> sure. well, liz, i mean, all indications are that there is a person inside the cabin. now, it's behind me on highway 38 several miles up the road and ahead they do have that road still closed off so here's the reason why cbs law enforcement source and others are saying they believe the body is inside. it has burned down for the most part but they also had that whole cabin in encircled an

entire perimeter. they knew there was someone inside there because there was gunfire exchanged. they were also trying to communicate but they never once saw someone exit so the sprumgs that they're still inside there. also, the law enforcement sources say there is a body in there. they still need to go inside and confirm that identity that it is christopher dorner and that there was no accomplice involved in this. of course, people are feeling that you know, there's relief this is coming to an ind but not until they finalize that identity liz. >> all right. theresa garcia in big bear. thank you. >> well, because he was right there when it all happened we want to show you more from cbs reporter carter evans tonight . >> i hear some screaming. >> authorityies are told us we need to stay low for our safety. moments ago we were caught in the middle of this gunfire

. a growing scandal involving horse meet mislabeled as beef has led to supermarkets in dozens of european countries to pull meals from their shelves and today two slaughter houses suspected of selling that meet were raided. raided two slaughter houses in northern england and wails seizing all the meet there for inspection. most american horse meet ends up oun tables in europe and china.

california is one of the few states that bans those exports however, some people say that ban just isn't working. tonight at 11:00 in a kpix 5 exclusive, a look at the slaughter house pipeline and what people are doing to save california horses from ending up as food. hun hundreds of fish died after a broken pipe sent chlorinated water into san mateo leak. that leak was discovered this weekend. it took, though, about eight hours to slow the flow because if crews did it too fast, pressure could have broken other parts of that pipeline. >> and we added new tralizing chemicals toth flow to get rid of the chlorine to make it safer for the a kwatic wildlife down at the stream. >> the pipe is still leaking. officials estimate 75 to a hun gallons a minute. one of the big medical mysteries is why so many more kids these days are being diagnosed with autism. >> kpix 5 dr. kim tells us women
