number 32 car went airborne, off the track, ripping a hole in the catch fence. race fan tyler anderson was in the stands and caught the crash on this video which he posted to youtube. lauren williams snapped this photo of a tire in the stands. she was watching the race from a daytona. the collision sent debris and car parts flying. this car engine ended up in the stands. one fan said the crash sounded like an earthquake. >> nascar said 28 people were injured. half of them were taken to the hospital, at least two with major injuries. no drivers were seriously hurt. danica patrick, who will start the daytona 500 in the pole position tomorrow, had dropped out of the race before the crash occurred. emergency crews are still creeng up the mess well after dark and plan to repair the catch fence throughout the night. nascar says the green flag for the 55th running of the daytona 500 will happen as planned.

adriana diaz. >> axelrod:now to washington and the budget battle.at we're now six days from the deadline for congress and the b white house to reach a deal across the board cuts that would total $85 billion and be divided equally between defense andssiona domestic programs. the congressional budget office estimates the cuts would put 750,000 people out of work. wyatt andrews now with thes now with latest on the democrats and republicans, both dug in and showing little sign of movement. >> repor >> reporter: in one of the most detail detailed warnings on sequestration, the f.a.a., the federal aviation administration, says starting in april, air travelers should get ready for delays. if budget cuts go into effect, 47,000 workers, including air traffic controllers, will be furloughed one day every two weeks, and 100 air traffic a towers would close at small-city airports. the reductions could mean longer

that could be a problematic combination, i would imagine. >> reporter: it sure can.t sure we are looking at these cuts t causing about a half a percent a drag on growth. growth. the economy's only growing bynly gro about 2% a year. a half a percent is a real number. we we're also looking at potential jo job cuts of about 750,000 abou people. so this is a big hit to theg economy, just at the time as the tim we're really starting to be in some somewhat accelerating partng t of the recovery. some i think economists areomists a disappointed that the sequestration is going to take se place at all. a >> axelrod: now, wall street hashas been seeing progress, steadyess upward movement. what is this likely to do asely to people are seeing their 401(k)s th recover? what's the likely fallout here. >> right now, when i talk to big>> right investors-- the guys and gals th managing our 401(k) mutual fund- gals m - they're saying, "look, we built this in. we believe the sequester will occur. sequ we think that growth is going to be reduced, but it's still strong enough so companies canbe make money, so we don't believe

there's anything really bad that will happen to the stock market." that said, they also believe in the economy starts to falter congress will be forced to act and be potentially delay these cuts. >> axelrod: jill schlesinger thank you. >> great to be with you. >> axelrod: now to the vaticanyou. where pope benedict is set to resign this coming thursday. cardinals from around the worldenedi have started to arrive in rome to elect the successor.d the tonight as allen pizzey reports,n there are new hints of scandal clouding the pope's final few days.l >> reporter: in a final address to the vatican bureaucracy today, benedict thanked church officials for helping him bear what he called the weight of the papacy. just how heavy the weight is has been highlighted over the past the week. ju the italian media has been pa riddled with eyebrow-raising stories of alleged scandals,n r including the existence of a gay ey lobby of homosexual priestsst within the church hierarchy. that may be an exaggeration, but a vatican official was fired because of a homosexual liaisonas

in 2007 and another in 2010. the latest stories to offend then vatican are centered on an investigation by three cardinals. into the so-called vati-leaks b scandal that resulted in the conviction of the pope's butler for stealing documents. va today, the vatican issued ahe blast: the main concern seems to be the effect the news could have on con the cardinals when they enter the conclave to choose the next pope.wer scotland's cardinal keith o'brian summed it up this way: >> knowing the person we might choose will be assuming increasingly heavy responsibility, not just for the roman catholic church but for the world itself. >> reporter: benedict remains busy with the responsibility of farewells. today it was the turn of italian president georgeio napolitano. a high-level vatican source said

the pope is expected to issue an edict shortening the 15-day waiting period between the endo of the papacy and the conclave. predictions are they will begin sunday march 10. >> axelrod: allen pizzey at the vatican tonight for us.ill b thank you. 116 cardinals will vote for the new pope. 11 are american, including cardinal roger mahony of rog california. but there are catholics in both los angeles and italy demanding mahony stay away because of his role in shielding sexuallylly abusive priests. magalie laguerre-wilkinson picks up the story. >> reporter: cardinal rogerory. mahony led the los angeles archdiocese, the largest in the united states for 25 years. he retired in 2011. today, mahony was deposed for a lawsuit filed by a 35-year-old man who claimed of claims he was the victim of sexual abuse in the 1980s. the suit alleges that church leaders allowed the accused priest to leave the united

states to avoid prosecution. the priest remains a fugitive in mexico. earlier this month, the los angeles archdiocese released more than 12,000 pages of files documenting a pattern in which mahony and other church officials reassigned many accused priests away from california, shielding them from law enforcement authorities in the 1980s. as america's senior cardinal mahony will lead the u.s. delegation to rome. he's been actively tweeting about his upcoming trip. >> reporter: that tweet has been met by mostly negativeg, responses. >> reporter: so far, mahony has not responded to those criticsso on twitter. magalie laguerre-wilkinson, cbs news, new york. >> axelrod: now to india and a

protest demanding justice after the rape and murder of three young sisters. the streets were packed today in a state in western india. three sisters, age five, nine, and 11, disappeared nearly two weeks ago. their bodies were found in a well. police first insisted it was an accident, then autopsy confirms the girls had been sexually assaulted. a british newspaper is reporting tonight that oscar pistorius wants to reach out to the family of the girlfriend he admits shooting and killing. pistorius is out on bail and staying at his uncle's house. the "guardian" newspaper quotes the uncle, arnold pistorius, describing his nephew. "the family of can reeva steenkamp his mind all the time and his purpose would be to be part of the family in the future." later, two young afghan actors in the oscar spotlight. and art world mystery. a popular mural on a wall in london somehow shows up on the auction block in miami. and home prices on the rebound

it's called "slave labor" another politically inspired mural by the graffiti artist known as bansky. it showed up on a wall in a gritty london neighborhood and people liked it. >> quite nice. bansky is obviously very important artisit. >> reporter: and then one day, it was gone. well, not exactly gone. it showed up here for sale at a miami auction house, and people back in london weren't happy. >> bring back bansky! bring back bansky! >> i think it's a shame, so can we have it back? and quite quickly, please. >> reporter: how a piece of london wall gets to miami and goes on sale has people angryeopl and scratching their heads. was it hacked off and stolen and by who? the auction house owner frederic thut, isn't saying. >> we don't want to be involved in the controversy.eat >> reporter: bansky has made news before. his works are famous and controversial, but he remains a

phantom. his identity has never been revealed. he's upset people from london to israel, but bansky's work has become collectibles even though he said it shouldn't be sold because it belongs to the people. somehow, though, it ends up on the market. so part of the appeal of bansky is the mystery.e ap his work is famous for appearing out of nowhere overnight. when it also mysteriously disappears, the mystery is only enhanced. mark phillips, cbs news, london >> axelrod: the mural was expected to sell between $500 and $700,000. just a few minutes before the00 auction was set to start this afternoon, it was taken off the block. o the auction house offered no explanation why, and the mystery deepens. one final auction note-- this one, an update on this statue which we reported on earlier this week. it's the original statue of the flag raising on iwo jima done seven years before the mucha larger one still standing in

evening, there are five contenders at tomorrow night's academy awards in the categoryction of best live action short film.of but the stars of one of the movies in particular are attracting a lot of the pre- oscar buzz. carter evans has more on twoe young actors a long way from home. >> reporter: in afghanistan, the words "lights" and "action" usually mean... ( explosion ) but this war-torn country is nowal the setting for something completely different.methin an oscar-nominated film, not setent. with the backdrop of war but about the national sport of afghanistan, buzkashi, a more brutal form of polo. good evening, i'm ann notarangelo. we begin with breaking news out of las vegas. police have named a suspect in the shooting on the strip that killed an aspiring rapper from the bay area. investigators are now looking for 26-year-old amar harris. they found the black suv he was believed to have been driving during the shooting located this afternoon at an apartment east of the las vegas strip. kenneth cherry was killed by gunfire while driving his maserati early thursday morning. the maserati then hit a taxicab leading to the fiery wreck that killed the cab driver and passenger. oakland police are looking for a group of teens who got off an a.c. transit bus and then opened fire on it. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec tells us despite the violence, riders say it won't keep them from taking the bus. >> it's a crazy story. >> reporter: it's not what you expect when you board a bus dodging bullets from behind.
