number 32 car went airborne, off the track, ripping a hole in the catch fence. race fan tyler anderson was in the stands and caught the crash on this video which he posted to youtube. lauren williams snapped this photo of a tire in the stands. she was watching the race from a daytona. the collision sent debris and car parts flying. this car engine ended up in the stands. one fan said the crash sounded like an earthquake. >> nascar said 28 people were injured. half of them were taken to the hospital, at least two with major injuries. no drivers were seriously hurt. danica patrick, who will start the daytona 500 in the pole position tomorrow, had dropped out of the race before the crash occurred. emergency crews are still creeng up the mess well after dark and plan to repair the catch fence throughout the night. nascar says the green flag for the 55th running of the daytona 500 will happen as planned.

the pope is expected to issue an edict shortening the 15-day waiting period between the endo of the papacy and the conclave. predictions are they will begin sunday march 10. >> axelrod: allen pizzey at the vatican tonight for us.ill b thank you. 116 cardinals will vote for the new pope. 11 are american, including cardinal roger mahony of rog california. but there are catholics in both los angeles and italy demanding mahony stay away because of his role in shielding sexuallylly abusive priests. magalie laguerre-wilkinson picks up the story. >> reporter: cardinal rogerory. mahony led the los angeles archdiocese, the largest in the united states for 25 years. he retired in 2011. today, mahony was deposed for a lawsuit filed by a 35-year-old man who claimed of claims he was the victim of sexual abuse in the 1980s. the suit alleges that church leaders allowed the accused priest to leave the united

states to avoid prosecution. the priest remains a fugitive in mexico. earlier this month, the los angeles archdiocese released more than 12,000 pages of files documenting a pattern in which mahony and other church officials reassigned many accused priests away from california, shielding them from law enforcement authorities in the 1980s. as america's senior cardinal mahony will lead the u.s. delegation to rome. he's been actively tweeting about his upcoming trip. >> reporter: that tweet has been met by mostly negativeg, responses. >> reporter: so far, mahony has not responded to those criticsso on twitter. magalie laguerre-wilkinson, cbs news, new york. >> axelrod: now to india and a

protest demanding justice after the rape and murder of three young sisters. the streets were packed today in a state in western india. three sisters, age five, nine, and 11, disappeared nearly two weeks ago. their bodies were found in a well. police first insisted it was an accident, then autopsy confirms the girls had been sexually assaulted. a british newspaper is reporting tonight that oscar pistorius wants to reach out to the family of the girlfriend he admits shooting and killing. pistorius is out on bail and staying at his uncle's house. the "guardian" newspaper quotes the uncle, arnold pistorius, describing his nephew. "the family of can reeva steenkamp his mind all the time and his purpose would be to be part of the family in the future." later, two young afghan actors in the oscar spotlight. and art world mystery. a popular mural on a wall in london somehow shows up on the auction block in miami. and home prices on the rebound

good evening, i'm ann notarangelo. we begin with breaking news out of las vegas. police have named a suspect in the shooting on the strip that killed an aspiring rapper from the bay area. investigators are now looking for 26-year-old amar harris. they found the black suv he was believed to have been driving during the shooting located this afternoon at an apartment east of the las vegas strip. kenneth cherry was killed by gunfire while driving his maserati early thursday morning. the maserati then hit a taxicab leading to the fiery wreck that killed the cab driver and passenger. oakland police are looking for a group of teens who got off an a.c. transit bus and then opened fire on it. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec tells us despite the violence, riders say it won't keep them from taking the bus. >> it's a crazy story. >> reporter: it's not what you expect when you board a bus dodging bullets from behind.
