schedule meeting with u.s. forces and with afghan officials. but he never got to the scheduled joint press conference with afghan president hamid karzai. it was cancelled. the afghan said the americans pulled the plug. the pentagon said there were security concerns. further muddying hagel's visit, karzai accused the united states and the taliban of holding daily talks and having a mutual interest in destabilizing afghanistan. as an example, he cited yesterday's suicide bombings that killed 19 people. he said they're trying to frighten us into thinking that if the foreigners are not in afghanistan we would be facing these sort of incidents. the defense secretary and karzai eventually met behind closed doors. hagel told karzai there are no talks. >> i told the president it was not true. that the united states was unilaterally works with the

taliban in trying to negotiate anything. >> reporter: it has been a trip with little good to be said about u.s. afghan relations as both nations try to unwind america's role here. yesterday the final handover of afghan prisoners held by u.s. forces was cancelled in an argument over karzai's desire to free some of them. as if the day weren't already tense enough later president hamid karzai accused u.s.-lead forces and afghans working with them of abusing university students. jeff? >> charlie today was also karzai's deadline for u.s. special forces to be out of wardack province which is strategically important because it close to kabul this over the alleged abuse of the local population. what is the latest with that? >> well the u.s. military says it is still under discussion. president karzai's office has said that it is still unresolved. tonight we called the afghan ministry of defense to see

if u.s. special forces were complying with that order and they hung up on us twice. >> jeff: charlie d'agata thank you. to the economy now and more evidence the recovery is taking hold. we learned friday that employers added 236,000 jobs in february, that was better than expected. and the unemployment rate fell to 7.7%. for more now we're joined by cbs news analyst mellody hobson. good evening to you. so good jobs news here but still 12 million unemployed. many discouraged. does that get better any time soon? >> yes and it gets better and better and better. a lot of those discouraged workers have said i'm giving up. i can't find a job. but there's good news on the horizon. one, housing is a silver bullet. the most unemployed people are construction related jobs. as housing continues to improve, those numbers are going to get better and better, as well as all of the related industries. and the success breeds success. the more they see people getting jobs, they will want

to go out and find work. last but not least, don't discount the boomers. the boomers were looking at these torpedoed 401(k) plans and now they are saying they have recovered. maybe i won even look any more and that frees up more opportunities for others. >> jeff: we heard all this news or warnings about layoffs surrounding the sequester, right. yet this week on wall street, four record-breaking days. how do we square those two things? >> the market is saying we already know that. it's priced in. everything with the sequester ad nauseum has been so well telegraphed to us, we have heard about the potential possibility of 700,000 government jobs being lost. we heard about the growth rates for the u.s. economy may slow because of this. and yet the market is saying corporate america is in really good shape. and they can ride through whatever might come. so it's walking it off. >> jeff: mellody hobson, good to see you. thank you. >> the zow opens tomorrow at an all-time high up 120%

>> jeff: the second anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami that triggered a nuclear disaster in japan is tomorrow. today thousands marched this tokyo demanding that most of japan's nuclear reactors remain closed. the disaster at fukushima was the worst nuclear incident since chernobyl in 1986. the meltdown in japan forced 170,000 people from their homes. many of them permanently. now a group of u.s. navy veterans are saying exposure to leaking radiation from the plant has made them sick. magalie laguerre spoke with two of them. >> reporter: immediately after the disaster the u.s. navy diverted the aircraft carrier ronald reagan from south korea to japan to provide aid. jamie plym and maurice enis were among the 5,000 sailors on board. >> we had already been there rendering aid and giving supplies and stuff for maybe a couple of days before we even heard something about a nuclear power plant. >> reporter: the tokyo

electric power company tepco, claimed the fukushima plant was under control. but in reality three nuclear reactors were melting down releasing radioactive gases. while towns within 12 miles of the plant were evacuated, the reagan was stationed just 1 to 2 miles from shore. >> i get my-- check nothing wrong, i get my hands check, the geiger meter goes crazy they told everybody to get back, get away from me. that just made me more nervous and scared. >> i developed gynecological issues. and nobody understood it. and they just kept saying stress. i also developed asthma i had cron quite-- cron chiat is six times. >> plym and enis say exposure from radiation from fukushima made them sick. >> i got a lump that popped up between my eyes another lump on my jaw and another lump on my think. >> now a couple they've completed their service and
