for a little on mcdonald's dollar menu. officer king harris: highway patrol is a unit in the philadelphia police department. half the guys are assigned to patrol interstate highways. the other half of the unit is what we call the line squad. we work the high-crime areas. yeah, i'd much rather be here, working in an area like this than working somewhere where every call you get is somebody complaining about somebody's dog going to the bathroom on their yard. ten, 15 years ago, what you found out here was what we call saturday night specials. today you have uh... you got a 19, 17-year-old kid running around out here with a uzi with a 20 or 30 round clip in it. officer hank glenn: the guy driving

at a high rate of speed. he's pulling over. there ain't any tags on. you calling somebody to come in? for what? temporary tags..? yeah. ...in the window? turn it off. suspect: huh? turn it off. how come? got two hands? whose car? mine. step on out. hands on the car. got a license or i.d.? yeah, i got i.d. slide back. back. back of the car. right here. what happening, man? hey, what up? harris: that's what's up. you don't have a driver's license. you're not supposed to drive the car. the law says you have to have a valid driver's license. you got a tail light out. suspect: no, i ain't got no... harris: at nighttime, we can't see that temporary registration.

let me see your i.d., boss. how old are you, man? twenty-five. come on out. what's the driver's name? my name is james. what's the driver's name? the driver's name? harris: this is what they gave you for registration? this is a bill of sale. oh. i must have lost the rest of it. harris: what are you guys doing down here, man? huh? what are you..? suspect: we was taking him home. you ain't going to find nothing, though. glenn: we stopped the car. the man on the front seat was moving around a little bit. for our protection, we get all three males out and frisk them and the passenger in front dropped the gun to the floor. i originally thought it was a blank gun. it turned out to be a .22 which will kill you as fast as any

other gun. it gives you a sense of accomplishment when you take a weapon off the street like that because these guys are young guys. they're not just riding around in their car with a weapon for their own protection. what do you need a gun in a car for if you're going to the store or going to visit a friend? somebody say something to them throw water on their car... them guys, they liable to pull their gun out and shoot somebody and it can be a young kid, you know, or, you know... so it's always good when you get a gun off the street like that. dispatcher: 44th district, 30-50. harris: you got the p.a.? you have a white male in white clothing who went into a retail store.

( horn honking ) harris: this will be an all-night thing and you'll end up locking somebody up. it's a family disturbance between sisters and the other girl's cousin. apparently, one of them went to, uh... ( horn beeping ) the city welfare department came out to take her child away from her today. she thinks her cousin is the one that turned her in. right now, what we're doing is trying to get them separated and get them back into their own houses. ( yelling and screaming ) woman: he lying! harris: see, somebody going to get hurt. you're gonna have to end up locking somebody up. in a situation like that at any given time it's not unusual for the whole family to then turn all their anger onto the police because you're there. you're trying to stop it. you push somebody harder than they think you should the next thing you know it's not you breaking up a fight. it's you and your partner being in the middle of a fight.

he had a beard? did anybody from here run after these guys? did any of your employees run after these guys? yeah. my boss. yeah. they're going to bring them back here. okay? let me go to south detectives and we'll make the complaint up. uh, from what i understand the owner of this place was in foot pursuit after them and he caught them himself down there, two blocks away, along with the officers. they should be up here shortly. dispatcher: 19-31-13. they're coming up with somebody now. looks like him, though. want to take a peek? woman: okay. hold on. does that look like him? uh-huh. uh-huh. that's him, huh? looks like they caught him. ma'am, i need yous both to come here.

plants. he dropped two down there by the door. i took the two put them in the store. i said the guy took two and went around the corner. how can two be here? he dropped it and went down the street. you told me he took that way. no. he went this way. he dropped two plants. you told me. well, i didn't do it. i have a store down there. how do you think this makes me feel? how can you have two plants? you got your plants back. aren't you satisfied? so you stole it? how can you have plants? baby, i don't want your plants. aah! i'm... you got your plants back you was paying for. right? you lied to me. smith: have a seat up, sir. watch your head. that's okay. that's okay. you guys don't give a damn. that was the robbery call that usually comes out

and when i got there she said two guys stole her flowers from the cleaners. she said this guy just picked up two flowers and walked away without paying for the flowers. so she seen him down the street putting them down. and she said, "what are you doing with my flowers?" he was acting dumb about it. the other guy with him said, "take your flowers and leave." so he was brought back to the scene and i.d.'d by the complainants. this is typical on south street.

officer jim ryan: i'm born and raised in philadelphia. became a policeman a couple of years out of high school. worked in north philadelphia my whole career. it's changed considerably in the last five years. it used to be real, real heavy narcotics. obvious narcotics sales on the corner. now it deals more in weight, volume.

it's more low-keyed, more kept under the rug. harder to spot. years ago, it was a lot easier to spot everything. there's a lot more shootings now. there's supposed to be a stabbing on the highway at that location. something's going on. we're not far at all. we're only two or three blocks off. normally, when they say stabbing it's normally fatal. 39. one more 200. look at this. they're pulling up. something's going on. you got cops up here on location. what's going on? who stabbed him? who stabbed him? who stabbed him, though? they're on the second floor right there. is somebody stabbed?

nothing like that? no, no. we'll lose your chapstick, man. all right, man. put your stuff in your pocket. put your stuff back in your pocket. everything's cool, all right? you have a seat in the police car. got the complaint? ryan: the complainant was stabbed in the arm-- both arms, several times. the defendant claimed he broke into his apartment and he was defending his property. we arrested the guy for the aggravated assault. davis: it's sad to say, but that's what happens down here. the defendant takes matters in his own hands rather than letting the police take care of it. they take care of the situation their own selves. technically, it's survival of the fittest. that's what happened in this situation. one guy had a knife, the other guy didn't and he lost. now he's over in the hospital getting stitched up and the other guy's arrested.

we're live in san jose where a portion of 280 is closed after a body is found on the freeway. a violent attack on a packed muni bus in san francisco. what we have learned about what happened and the man police are searching for. developing news from virginia. three people are today following an overnight shooting sat a marine base. the new information just released in its investigation. it's all ahead on the ktvu channel 2 morning news. good morning, everybody it is friday, sounds very good to say that. march 22nd i'm brian flores. >> good morning, i'm pam cook. you will not believe who is here for us on the weather this morning. >> yeah i wanted to come in and

fatal accident. >> reporter: that is right i'm in the southbound lanes of highway 280 where there is only one lane open the fast lane because of the california highway patrol is conducting their investigation. 911 calls started coming in about 3:15 this morning after people spotted a body in the roadway. now to get more information exactly about how this all happened we go to chp officer tony tam. can you tell me what appears to have happened here. >> just after 3:15 this morning we received a call of a pedestrian in the roadway. units arrived on scene. there were several vehicles that stopped to protect the body from getting run over again. we had no information at this time. we don't have any suspect vehicle information. if anyone was until the area that saw anything or hear anything please give us a call. >> reporter: do we know if it's a male or female?

what age? >> i don't have age. it appears to be female at this point. we're waiting for the coroner to arrive on scene. >> reporter: you mentioned this will be a challenge. other law enforcement agencies helping you out to try to find where this vehicle might be that is responsible? >> we broadcasted to other agencies in the area to be on the look out for vehicles with fresh is traffic damage. >> reporter: we're told body is in the number three lane. only one lane is open. can you give me an estimate when you think all the rest of the lanes will open? >> coroner should be here approximately 4:45. we're wrapping up our measurements so around 5:15 or as soon as possible. >> reporter: thank you for information. we'll continue to be out here monitoring this situation. again, waiting for the coroner to arrive and only the fast lane opened here on 280. report
