child. y >> this is the "cbs morning news" for wednesday, may 1st, . >> this is the "cbs morning news" for wednesday, may 1st, 2013. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. president obama says counterterrorism officials did what they were supposed to be doing before the boston marathon bombings, but the government's handling of intelligence is being questioned. a 90-day federal review of events leading up to the bombing this week. they will claim his body once the wife has agreed. once they do, his cause of death will be released. meanwhile the man who tamerlan and his brother allegedly carjacked spoke to cbs news correspondent john miller in his first tv interview. >> reporter: this 26-year-old chinese entrepreneur who calls himself danny had just pulled over in his new mercedes on this

boston street to send a text message when a man jumped in. >> i thought it was a robbery. he took out his gun, pointed it at me, he said don't be stupid. >> reporter: but then he quickly realized this was more than just a robbery. >> he asked me a question like do you love -- i said, yes. i said, he said, i did that, and gist killed a policeman in cambridge. >> reporter: he and his younger brother dzhokhar loaded their things into danny's car. the two spoke in russia. >> do you understand the words in their conversation. >> i only heard one word. it's manhattan. >> reporter: manhattan. >> yeah. >> reporter: did it seem like they were going there? >> yeah. it seemed like they were going

to new york because they asked me a lot of questions. >> reporter: en route to a gas station, danny's phone rang. it was his roommate who wondered why he wasn't home. tamerlan pulled a gun out. >> i said if you don't want me to pick the phone up, i won't. he said you have to answer your phone, but if you say any word in chinese, i will kill you. >> reporter: so when your roommate hears you speaking in english, did he hear you in english? >> he answered in chinese. he said why are you speaking in english, is everything okay. i told him i'm going to sleep over a friend's. >> reporter: what happens then? >> so after i hung up the phone, tamerlan was real happy. he said, good job, good boy. >> reporter: so at some point you start thinking i need an exit strategy here. >> yeah. i need to figure out a way, you know, to save myself. i had the normal sense of what to do.

i had to unlock the door, unfasten myself, pull the handle on the door. >> at the gas station tamerlan left to pay. tamerlan was fiddling with the gps. danny knew this might be his last chance. how do you do that in your head? do you say, 1-2-3? i was counting. i said, 1-2-3-4. i just do it. i did it. as i reached for the door, tamerlan was trying to grab me. >> reporter: so you're going. he was reaching out. >> yeah. >> reporter: and now you're running. >> i was running. i was running just as fast as i can, and i never looked back. >> reporter: he ran across the street to this station and pleaded with the clerk to call 911. >> carjacking occurring at richie's shell, 301 cambridge scene. the victim pled the car at t-mobile on memorial drive. >> reporter: if you hadn't escaped, called 911, and put police on the trail of these bombers, bad things would have happened.

i mean you are a hero in this story. >> i don't think i'm a hero, you know, but i was trying to do is save myself. of course, what i was doing was just trying to save myself. i did something -- probably did something good. the police, they are the heroes. they exchanged the gunfire with those bad guys. they are the heroes. >> when the police arrived at the second gas station, danny told the police officers the men who carjacked him and had stolen his car were the marathon bombers who had also just killed officer collier. they were also able to use the built-in gps system built into his mercedes to catch the suspects. one was killed at the scene. the other was captured the next day hiding in a boat. john miller, cbs news, new york. >> and you can see more of john miller's interview today on "cbs morning news." now, seven americans were killed when a cargo plane crashed after taking off from an

air force base in afghanistan. we want to warn you this video you're about to see may be disturbing to some. this video appears to show the 747 going down after it took off from bagram air base on monday. the jet was operated by national air cargo and headed to dubai. the seven americans were all crew members. brad hassler was a pilot in command, and his brother says he had just gotten married. >> my brother's been a pilot since he was 19. i used to fly in cessnas with him all the time. he loved flying but what he loved more than flying is his wife of two weeks. i love my brother more than anything, and if i could trade places with him so he could be with his family, i would in a heartbeat. >> nato says there was no sign of enemy activity in the area at the time of the crash. the ntsb is investigating.

>> president obama said he would consider military action against syria if there is, quote, hard effective evidence. the assad regime used chemical weapons. a just released cbs/new york times poll says americans are reluctant to see u.s. get involved in the syrian civil war. 62% of those asked says the u.s. does not have a responsibility to intervene. susan mcginnis is in washington this morning. susan? >> and . >> anne-marie, despite those poll numbers, the white house is considering greater involvement in syria. they say the international community must be fully confident. president obama is said to be considering a plan to ship weapons to rebel groups fighting the syrian army. the president has ordered his national security team to identify what the u.s. can do to help topple syrian dictator bashir al assad.

>> we've got do everything we can to protect the syrian people. >> the president said he likely used chemical weapons against his own people, but he said more evidence is needed. >> i've got to be sure i have got the facts. that's what americans expect. >> the president said he likely used chemical weapons against hiss own people, but more evidence is needed. he called the use of chemical weapon games-changer. >> that means there are some options we might not otherwise exercise that we would -- that we would strongly consider. >> but president obama stopped short of repeating that syria's use of chemical weapons is a redline that it cannot cross. many here on capitol hill are becoming frustrated with the lack of action. >> the president has laid down the line. you know, it can't be a dotted line. it can't be anything other than a redline. >> cbs news has obtained a letter from the head of the free syrian army to president obama asking for u.s. training and equipment to help fight the government forces. he says, mr. president, now that assad has crossed your redline as he had crossed many before, we are calling upon you to help

us rid syria and the world of this cruel dictator and his chemical weapons. now while the u.s. considers expanding its help to the syrian rebels, the head of hezbollah, which the u.s. is considering a terrorist organization, is hinting its fighters may join syrian forces fighting the forces. anne-marie? >> susan mcginnis in washington, thank you, susan. during his news conference yesterday, the president also said he would try again to close the prison for terror suspects at guantanamo bay, cuba. mr. obama says the prison is expensive, inefficient, not necessary, and not sustainable. >> the idea that we would still maintain forever a group of individuals who have not been tried, that is contrary to who we are, it is contrary to our interests, and it needs to stop. >> about 100 of the 166 prisoners at guantanamo bay are on a hunger strike. the prisoners are being force fed.

the active ingredient in the active ingredient in ambien and other insomnia drugs is blamed for nearly 20,000 e.r. visits in 2010 alone. a report out today by the substance abuse and mental health services administration found that's more than three times the number from just five years earlier. adverse reactions include daytime drowsiness, hallucinations, and sleep walking. the fda has considered cutting the dosage. and girls as young as 15 can buy the so-called morning after pill without a prescription. the fda on tuesday reduced the age to 17 and no longer requires the pill to be kept behind pharmacy counters.

some critics say the change doesn't go far enough. they're worried that young women without i.d. will be denied access to the drug. on the "cbs moneywatch." home prices gain momentum and apple's record-size bond deal. ashley morrison is here in new york with that and more. good morning, ashley. >> good morning to you, anne-marie. the americans are feeling more confident about the economy. the conference board's monthly survey found that people are optimistic people will increase hiring and salaries. the housing market also saw a rebound. prices in february rose by more than 9%. that is the biggest jump in nearly seven years. phoenix saw the biggest rise in home values at 23%. the good news listed stocks on wall street. the dow and nasdaq each gained 21 points. apple sold a record amount of bonds on tuesday, $17 billion worth. the tech company is raising money for increased dividends and stock buyback, but apple doesn't need to borrow the cash.

a little girl now has chance at a normal life. she is the youngest to ever undergo an experimental procedure that recently allowed her to breathe and eat on her own for the first time. randall pinkston reports. >> reporter: 2 1/2-year-old hannah warren was born without a windpipe. doctors in korea told her there was no hope of her survival, but now to groundbreaking surge are in illinois, she has a new trachea grown in her own stem cell. >> the tube in her mouth disappear and she was reborn. >> reporter: doctors extracted cells from hannah's bone marrow and grew them around a plastic frame in a lab. within a week the cells formed to grow a new windpipe. the surgeons implanted a new trachea during a nine-hour procedure to increase her life.

fist fights broke out in venezuela yesterday. opposition parties say they were attacked while protecting a measure to prevent them from speaking about the disputed presidential election. the opposition refuses to recognize president nicolas maduro's slim victory last month. several lawmakers were injured in the fight. well, an apparent robbery in new orleans did not go as planned. a man walking on the street earl saturday is approached by a gunman who demands money, but the victim grabs the gun away and gives chase. what you don't see, police say, moments later, the victim was approached by two men in a sedan. the driver wanted his gun back in exchange for the cell phone the victim dropped. the victim then struck the rear
