a massive wildfire fueled by high winds closes in on homes in southern california. firefighters work through the night to control the flames, which have already burned more than 12 square miles. and attack plan. authorities say the surviving boston marathon bombing suspect and his brother planned to strike on the fourth of july. captioning funded by cbs jobs on both sides of the border and that's the this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, may 3rd, 2013. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, this morning california firefighters are battling to save thousands of homes from a series of aggressive wildfires. the most dangerous is burning out of control about 50 miles

northwest of los angeles, but there are other fires in the east and in california. the big fire northwest of l.a. erupted in a wall of flames overnight. it stretches from the mountains to the ocean. the pacific coast highway has been closed twice and new evacuations were ordered last night. edward lawrence is in camarillo. edward, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. this fire in ventura county has actually grown overnight to 8,300 acres now. it was an intense and tiring day for fire crews and that has lead to intense fighting overnight. fire crews are trying to use the cooler temperatures to get in front of the flame. a thousand firefighters are working on this, and it's still just 10% contained. the overnight hours brought little relief for firefighters battling the spring's fire near camarillo, california. the blazes have burned thousands of acres and is still growing. >> it's getting very close, the fires. >> we just hope everything will

be okay. >> reporter: strong santa ana winds are pushing the flames which is cresting the ridge and has made its way down the pacific coast highway. firefighters set backfires hoping to control the burn, clear out brush, and save homes. a storage tank of highly toxic pesticides exploded when the fire overtook a farm. they issued an air quality warping and evacuated the area. it took hazmat crews several hours to bring the burning threat under control. they're giving the firefighters here a lot of manpower and resources to put out the fire and save homes, but this isn't the only fire raging in the state right now. >> now we're looking at the living room. >> reporter: at least two homes were destroyed in a blaze near banning, california, in riverside county. the fire has been burning for two days and is 40% contained. >> i think we may be looking at a very significant fire season.

>> reporter: officials say the lack of rain and snow this winter combined with the early appearance of the santa ana winds means it's likely to be a long season for firefighters. and the winds are expected to pick up as the sun rises. the pacific coast highway will remain closed in malibu. anne-marie? >> edward, before you go, i've seen some video where residents have had their mouths and noses covered with scarfs. i'm curious about the air quality where you are. >> reporter: where we are we're okay. we're several miles from the command centesencenter. you can see it behind me. but there are some warnings. there's a red flag warning still in effect because the high winds will increase as the sun comes up. there's a warning for the channel islands because the smoke is blowing out to sea. >> edward lawrence in camarillo, california. thank you, very much. well, the plains in the midwest are getting slammed by a storm that's producing record-breaking amounts of snow. this morning winter weather advisories are posted from michigan to arkansas. freeze warnings extend into the southwest. iowa and kansas are expected to

get some of the heaviest snow totals today. iowa set a record for snowfall totals in may. schools were closed in parts of minnesota and wisconsin yesterday. now to the boston marathon bombings. the suspect dzhokhar tsarnaev told investigators that the marathon was not the original target. meanwhile his brother's body has been retrieved by the family. randall pinkston reports. >> reporter: the body of boston marathon bombing suspect tamerlan tsarnaev was moved to a funeral home thursday. his family claimed the remains almost two weeks after tamerlan died in a gun fight with police in watertown. tamerlan and his younger brother were planning to carry it out july 4th. officials say the brothers moved up their plans to april 15th because they completed building their bombs sooner than expected. meanwhile two college friends of dzhokhar tsarnaev are said to be cooperating with authorities. azamat tazhayakov and dias kadyrbayev are being charged with attempting to to destroy

evidence after the attacks. another friend robel phillipos is charged with lying to police. after seeing pictures of him on tv, the two teenagers from kazakhstan removed a backpack and removed a backpack from the dorm room. the backpack contained fireworks that had been drained of their gun powder. the teens are accused of throwing the evidence in the trash but it was later found in a land field. two and a half weeks after the deadly bombing, police hope the two arrests will help them learn a lot more about tsarnaev's methods and motives. robel phillipos is due in court on monday. the others on the 14th. all three are being held without bail. randall pinkston, cbs news, boston. bangladesh building collapse has now reached more than 500. this morning families continue to look for missing relatives. the eight-story building packed

with workers caved in april 24th. an engineer who warned the building was unsafe has been arrested because he was involved in illegally adding three stories to the building. he is the ninth person arrested in connection with the disaster. and the gunman who opened fire at houston's largest airport left a suicide note. carnell moore fired two shots in a terminal at bush intercontinental airport yesterday before he was confronted by a federal agent. earlier in the day he posted a message on a social media website saying he intended to commit mass murder. tiffany craig of our houston station khou reports. >> reporter: it was terror inside terminal b. >> he open-range started shooting. open-range started shooting. >> reporter: kendra and plenty of passengers saw it or heard it and scattered. >> we took off. customers took off. everybody. we had a line. everything took off. we're right there in the front. and when he was shooting free

will, you know, anybody could have got that shot. anybody could have got that shot. >> reporter: houston police say carnell moore walked in with an ar-15 and then pulled out another gun, a handgun, and then fired it at the ticket ceiling and then turned it on himself just as a special agent came out of a nearby office and shot at him. >> i mean it happened right in the airport. real crazy. >> reporter: it became a crime scene leaving plenty of passengers stranded. >> nothing, no one from united is anywhere in sight interestingly. >> reporter: dale howard was here picking up his sister from a funeral. >> i was standing right there at the bottom of the escalator, and i heard two gunshots, short delay, three more gunshots, and then they locked everything down. >> reporter: and everything stayed locked down for hours and investigators and cleanup crews went to work, and those who usually work here were kept far away.

>> automatically downstairs, outside, and then they told us from what i've about been told, the marshal took him out. >> that was tiffany craig reporting. carnell moore's autopsy is scheduled for today. it's unclear if he killed himself or was killed by the federal agent's gunfire. well, president obama heads to costa rica today after wrapping up a visit to mexico. yesterday in mexico city, mr. obama promoted immigration reform in this country. the president said cooperation on border control was essential and that immigration reform will affect the bottom line in both countries. >> part of what we discussed is the importance of getting it done precisely because we do so much business between our two countries. >> the president also addressed the syrian civil war. he said again all options are being considered. earlier defense secretary chuck hagel says the administration is considering arming the rebels opposing the assad regime.

the final two segments of a 408-foot spire were lifted to the top of the world trade center here in new york on thursday. they will rest on a construction platform for a few weeks before being secured permanently in place. the spire will bring the height of the building to 1,776 feet. the world trade center is scheduled to open next year. on the "cbs moneywatch" now, another city landmark is going

public, and taco bell rolls out a bargain menu. ashley morrison is here in new york with that and more. good morning, ashley. good morning to you, anne-marie. well, a sharper image of the make's economic picture will roll out later today when the jobs report releases its monthly job report. on thursday the labor department said weekly unemployment claims fell to a five-year low. the decline suggests fewer layoffs and perhaps some hiring. the lower jobless claims pushed wall street higher. the dow jones industrial average was up 130 points at close. the nasdaq gained 41 points. asian stocks got a lift. hong kong's hang seng gain add fraction while tokyo's nikkei is closed for a holiday. jpmorgan chase, the nation's biggest baenk is reportedly beig investigated by at least eight federal agncies for alleged improprieties. the new york times says in one case the bank devised a scheme showing money-losing electric power plants to be big profit

centers. the findings were cited in a confidential government document. jpmorgan chase disputes the claims and says its trading was legal. taco bell is joining other major fast food restaurant chains and offering dollar-priced food. it's new $1 cravings menu is being tested in sacramento and kansas city and will be offered in all of its restaurants in the coming months. the restaurant will have 12 items. fast food restaurants have served up dollar business to boost up business which has been mostly flat. soon you will be able to own a piece of one of the most recognizable buildings in new york. a judge here in new york has approved of a settlement to let the public buy shares of the empire state building. it's expected to raise money to form a new real estate company. shares are about $300,000 apiece. and text messaging is so yesterday. a wireless industry group says

the warriors advance with a 92-88 win. in the eastern conference the brooklyn nets keep their season alive. deron williams scores 17 points and dishes out 11 assists as the nets hold on to win game six over chicago, 95-92. brooklyn trailed three games to one. they will get a shot to win the series at home, though, saturday night in game seven. in the nhl playoffs anaheim and detroit played a wild one. the red wings in control with a 4-1 lead in the third period. anaheim scores three straight goals, tying it up with less than three minutes to play. but in overtime gustav nyquist wins it for detroit. the red wings tie up the series at one game apiece with the 5-4 win. and things getting nasty in game one of the ottawa/montreal series. p.k. subban delivers a bone-rattling hit on montreal's chris and later eller is hit by

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. mostly sunny in washington. atlanta, occasional showers but heavy rain in st. louis. denver and seattle, mostly sunny, a high of 73 in seattle. google glass, the tech giant's experiment in wearable technology, is not available to the public yet, but it's already creating privacy concerns. a new app allows users to take a photo by merely winking.
