first-degree murder, guilty. >> and the guilty verdict in the jodi arias murder case, the arizona woman accused of killing her ex-boyfriend now says she hopes to receive the death penalty. this is the "cbs morning news" for thursday, may 9th, 2013. captioning funded by cbs good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, ariel castro, the man accused of kidnapping three women in cleveland and holding them captive for a decade is expected to appear in court this morning. no charges will be filed against his two brothers who were arrested with him. prosecutors say there's no evidence they had anything to do with the crime. meantime two of the victims had an emotional homecoming. vinita nair is in cleveland with the latest. good morning, vinita. >> reporter: good morning to you, anne-marie. that's right. the primary suspect, 52-year-old ariel castro is in the city jail this morning expected to make that first public appearance. meanwhile investigators are sharing with us the details of an alleged suicide note in which he explains how he took these three women captive. it's a moment that has been ten

long years in the making. gina dejesus and amanda berry are finally home. >> and i saw my daughter. the only thing i did was grab her and hug her. i didn't want to let go. >> reporter: the third kidnapping victim michelle knight is still in the hospital listed in good condition. >> the man who allegedly kidnap and tied up those women, ariel castro, was convicted and charged wednesday. he is facing four counts of kidnapping and three counts of rape. >> this case will proceed to the cuyahoga county grand jury at which time i excellent result in an indictment on these charges and may result in additional counts. >> reporter: ariel castro will begin his defense later this morning when he appears in court for the very first time, but he may have implicated himself in a note allegedly written in 2004 shortly after the gina dejesus kidnapping.

>> was a suicide note from ariel castro found in his home? >> that is another part of evidence that we recovered that i cannot comment on. >> reporter: cbs affiliate woio has learned the details of the suicide note. they are reporting that castro wrote, i am a sexual predator. i need help. he allegedly went into great detail how he lured the women into his trap. he wrote, they're here against their will because they made the mistake of getting in a car with a total stranger. federal agents are also searching a home nearby. they're not commenting on exactly why, only to tell us they're still looking for more evidence. reporting live in cleveland, vinita nair. anne-marie, back to you. the september attack came under the microscope again on wednesday. three state department officials giving lawmakers their accounts of the attack that killed four americans, including ambassador

chris stevens. susan mcginnis is in washington with more. good morning, susan. >> good morning, anne-marie. wednesday's hearing before the house oversight committee was organized by republicans who say the white house has not been forthcoming about what happened in benghazi, and three witnesses who spoke yesterday called into question the white house response to the attack and its handling of the aftermath. >> do you solemnly swear that the testimony you're about to give -- >> the three state department diplomats were sworn in before answering questions about the terror attack on the u.s. mission in benghazi. greg hicks who was there on september 11th last year, describes the phone call he received from libya's prime minister. >> i think it's the saddest phone call i've ever had in my life. he told me that ambassador stevens had passed away. >> hicks testified he spoke with stevens who said the consulate was under attack. republicans have accused the obama administration of covering up details of what happened in

benghazi. they appointed two interviews given by u.n. ambassador susan rice in the days following the attack in which she said the violence grew spontaneously from an anti-american protest. >> she blamed this attack on a video. in fact, she did it five different times. what was your reaction to that? >> i was stunned. my jaw dropped, and i was embarrassed. >> hicks said he requested support from fighter jets, but they weren't sent. the pentagon has said it would have taken fighter jets up to 20 hours to reach benghazi. >> the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff said they simply could not get there quickly. mr. hicks, do you have any reason to question general dempsey's testimony before the senate? >> again, i was speaking from my perspective. >> i understand. >> on the ground in tripoli, based on what the defense

concluded that state department leadership is at fault for not having enough security at the u.s. consulate in benghazi, but these witnesses say that report is incomplete and did not go high enough up the chain of command at the state department. then secretary of state hillary clinton defended her response to the attack at the congressional hearing back in january. >> susan mcginnis in washington. thank you, susan. well, the widow of boston marathon bomber tamerlan tsarnaev has a criminal attorney who has experience defending terrorist defense cases. katherine russell has not been charged with a crime. investigators are trying to determine whether russell may have had a role in the bombing. zocor tsarnaev, the surviving suspect, told investigators she played no role in the bombings. the fbi is trying to corroborate that. now on the "cbs moneywatch," a medical mystery of varying

hospital costs and caffeinated gum shelved. ashley morrison is here in new york with that and more. good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. the choice of giving employees overtime pay or paid time off passed the republican controlled house. it moves on to the democratic controlled senate where the outcome is slim. democrats, labor unions, and worker advocacy groups says it will put pressure on workers to skip overtime pay. asian stocks were mostly lower on news of rising inflation in china. tokyo's nikkei lost half a percent while hong kong's hang seng dropped a fraction. a quiet day on wall street. the dow kept its head above the 15,000 mark, gaining almost 49 points. the nasdaq grew by 16. president obama heads to austin today to highlight his efforts to create jobs, boost wages, and return jobs to u.s. soil. critics say his focus on slashing the deficit by compromising with republicans has hurt the job market's recovery. the white house is trying to challenge health care costs by

revealing what 3,000 hospitals nationwide charge for the same procedures. the report highlights vast cost disparities from hospital to hospital. for instance, one new york hospital charges about $52,000 to treat a lung blood clot. just one mile away it's just $30,000. and wrigley's is taking its new caffeinated gum off store shelves for now while the fda makes sure it's safe. the company says it won't sell alert energy caffeine gum until the health benefits are under. each stick of gum has the equivalent of a half cup of coffee. wrigley's rolled out the gum a month ago. >> i suppose. i missed that one. coming up on "cbs morning news," governor chris christie getting a shrilling look through photoshop. and jodi arias, why she prefers dealt over her boyfriend's murder.

jurors in arizona convicted jodi arias of first-degree murder in the death of her ex-boyfriend. today the prosecutors will argue arias deserves the death penalty for her crime and she says that's exactly what she wants. in an interview at her conviction she said she would get freedom sooner than later. bigad shaban reports. >> reporter: jurors in the jodi arias trial reach add verdict after deliberations. they convicted arias of first-degree murder in the brutal slaying of her ex-boyfriend travis alexander. the victim's family and friends were in court for the verdict. >> my eyes teared up and i couldn't see. i think i just looked skyward and thanked god for this day. >> reporter: the sorted trial of sex and lies captured the

nation's attention. prosecutors argued arias killed alexander in a jealous rage at a suburban home with a gunshot wound to the head and stab wounds. >> would you agree that you're the person who slit mr. alexander's throat from ear to ear? >> yes. >> reporter: arias spent 18 days on the witness stand, sometimes breaking down in tears as she defended herself. initially she claimed she had nothing to do with alexander's death. she then blamed his murder on a home invasion. eventually she admitted she killed alexander but claimed it was self-defense. >> he was coming after me. he was coming after me. he wasn't stopping. >> reporter: the televised trial was filled with so much drama it became a sensation for tabloid tv watchers. people tried to buy tickets to attend the trial, and there's already a made-for-tv movie in the works.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. new york, thunderstorms, miami, partly sunny. thorms in chicago and dallas as well and clouds in los angeles. and time now for a check of the national forecast. expect an outbreak of severe thunderstorms in much of the midwest. storms also pass through new york, pennsylvania, and rain. we'll see rain from texas to arkansas and utah to new mexico. well, last year about a dozen secret service agents were caught in a prostitution scandal. they allegedly hired prostitutes in colombia before the president's visit. well since then, six of them are

on indefinite suspension without pay and without a hearing. gregory stokes, a supervisor, spoke about the matter exclusively with john miller. >> what can you tell me about what happened down there, why it happened, and if it was right or wrong? >> clearly what happened, the behavior that was exhibited down there in cartegena is not something that meets the expectations of the american people. for that we are truly sorry, but for anybody to think that the secret service as an agency has more or less of a problem with that behavior than any other agency with top secret security clearances, they'd be wrong. >> one of the concerns voiced early on in this story was these could be foreign intelligence operatives, this could compromise presidential security, this could lead to
